Brothers Day! And Jake Gyllenhaal is 'Mr Cool', 'this little upstart', king of the snowballers

While we give the North American readers their leave to skip class this evening due to pressing movie-going duties, the rest of us can catch up on a good day. First off we had Jimmy Kimmel Live. I'm gonna repeat these...

My archaeologically trained ears perked up at an interesting and objective discussion of 16th-century social practices and handy devices for disguising insect activity. My culinary senses took a jolt at descriptions of some sandwich that contained meat, chips, coleslaw and salad. No wonder this beast of a bap is best savoured by The Sasquatch, once thought to roam the forests of the American north west and now firmly located in Pittsburgh. My sporting sensibilities were heightened at the idea of football fans carrying some kind of placenta-covered comfort towel to games for over 20 years and then, while being merry, willingly handing them over to a movie star and his Sasquatch chum. My Jake appreciation skills were intensified at the news that Love and Other Drugs is naked heavy.

Then we stepped into the Twilight Zone, where actresses dress their dogs as cheerleaders and take them along to talk shows and manage to stay sentient during a close Jake encounter.

Stephanie at IHJ downloaded for us the TV Guide Brothers Special. Much of this was recorded at the Brothers NYC premiere, at which one brother was notably absent. The Jake bits were therefore taken from pieces we have already seen. Neverthless, not only do we learn that nine tenths of the time was taken up with snowball fights, we also hear the others talk some more about Jake - and this is what they said:

Tobey: 'I was pretty focused and not really doing much of lightening of mood. That was Jake Gyllenhaal's department.' (Snowballing reference.)

Jim: 'Working with Jake is interesting. He kind of works off anything happening in the room. he's so self-confident, it's scary.'

Bailee: 'Jake Gyllenhaal's an awesome Uncle! I love him! He's great. he's so funny, so many jokes.'

Tobey: 'It was great. I've nown Jake and he's a sweetheart and he really likes to play and explore and have fun. It was great working with him.'

Tobey gets deja vu: 'Jake's great. He's such a great talent. He's really playful and explores and has fun doing it.'

Jim: 'Jake is Mr Cool. Nothing is too much for him. He's totally relaxed. Nothing phases him.'

Jim: 'I was the champion snowball thrower, I was, and I could especially beat the children. I would hit them at a great distance and then hide.'

Jim (on Jake being a better snowballer than even Jim the Champion Snowball Thrower): 'The really annoying thing on the set with Jake was that I would usually be the centre of attention and then there would be this little upstart who became the centre of attention and I didn't realise how much that would upset me. [Q: So the snowball fights were actually between you and Jake?] Yeah, but he didn't know that cos I just hit him slightly on the back of his head and hide, ran away, y'know.'

The same site that brought us the little audio clip of Jake talking about Peter Sarsgaard has given us another one today and this time it's about the two little girls, Bailee Madison and Taylor Geare.

'I think that children have given some of the most incredible performances in film - on a par with some of the great adult performances. Children tend to do it actually probably at a higher ratio! They're just present and alive. And Jim working with them was like whatever was happening in the room... if we were sitting at this table with them and they were commenting on your hair and their honesty about what shirt you're wearing, whether they like it or not. They don't care whether it's going to offend you or not. Or that they are going to tell you that they love how beautiful your eyes look and, you know, those types of things Jim just brings out and cuts together. To work with the two of them, they were... it's great. You have these three actors who are probably taking themselves way too seriously and then you have these two little beings who are so present and so much better than you are and it was great.'

'And also really understanding the dramatisation - they weren't these innocents just plucked off the street and then put in a film - they were ready for it. Like when Tobey freaked out and Bailee had her moment with him and she says 'Uncle Tommy'... she was so excited! Like she couldn't wait to tell him, like 'Uncle Tommy was fucking her mom'! It was like her big moment! It really was! And that was great cos it was fun. It wasn't really tense. Jim just makes it fun. And the nature of it being made during the writers' strike and we had a kind of sense, 'whatever'.'

You can listen to and download the clip here.

A very happy birthday this weekend to BBMISwear! See you all from the other side of the pond...

I noticed Jake cut his hair again. It was very short on Jimmy Kimmel

I bet he enjoyed the snow since he doesn't see a lot of it in LA

Jake seems to now be impersonating Tobey deliberately, with the tie and white shirt, and hair etc.

Either that or he's after a new part...I wonder what it would be?

Enjoying Florida on Brothers Day?

Morning! Enjoying the delights of Gatwick - I don't recommend the breakfasts...

Hi Sweetpea :) Jake has indeed cut his hair - I think I like it!

Hey TD! I'd not thought that before but that suit is very Tobey-esque. Jake does look quite a bit thinner.

Have a good Saturday everyone! See you in another timezone :)

Thank you for the Happy Birthday shout out WDW! It certainly has been a great birthday weekend so far with all the wonderful Jake video clips both on line and on my TV screen and seeing Brothers twice so far!!

I saw Brothers for the second time last night and my feelings are the same as I described in my (LONG!) comment in yesterday's original December 4th post so I won't bore you with that again - ha ha!!

I will say that it's always great to see a Jake movie for the second time as some of us do tend to spend the first viewing gasping, holding our breath, wiping tears and in somewhat of a shocked state - just to see that image on the screen and hear that voice out of those surround sound speakers. Wow. Come on...you know who you are...I know I'm not alone with this!!

I'm very interested in what some of my fellow Gyllenhaalics who saw it yesterday and today think. I know you were concerned about some of the material, Olympia, and it sure was difficult to watch sometimes. I had lots of practice at hiding my eyes at the bad parts with Rendition (and told Jake so!!) and this was a lot easier than that - it's not always easy but worth it! Can't wait to hear what you and the others thought.

And...I really can't wait to hear what WDW thinks after seeing it tonight (fresh from a 10 hour flight - UGH)!!

Welcome Back to the East Coast of the USA WDW! Whooowheee!

More birthday festivities and watching Jake video clips planned for me...Happy Birthday indeed!!

Okay, here's my report, finally. I had some trouble with my computer this morning and couldn't post.

I saw Brothers last night. Jake was very good, as were Nathalie and Tobey. Tobey in particular, he was very convincing as a traumatised soldier. In fact, he kind of freaked me out. :D

It was great seeing Jake on a big screen again. I really enjoyed all his scenes with Natalie and the girls and I laughed a lot more than I expected. The two little girls who play Tommy's nieces are very good, especially the one who plays the youngest, Maggie. She is so believable, so natural and so darn cute. :)

I've said before that I didn't think Brothers was my kind of movie and I was right. There are some very violent scenes and I have a really low endurance threshold for those. This movie is intense (here's that word again!), at times violent and in the end it left me feeling a little depressed. I guess that's why I don't usually go see this type of movie, there are enough depressing and violent things in real life, I don't need to see more when I go to the theatre. I wonder how many people will want to see Brothers right now, it's the Holiday season and there's a real war going on.

I'm glad I went because I wouldn't want to miss any of Jake's performances and I truly enjoyed a large part of this movie. But the only way I'd watch it again is on a DVD with a fastforward button. Oh, and a pause button to admire the Jake in a towel scene. :D

Happy birthday BBMIswear, I hope you have a good one. :)

I've made it!! Bloody hell that was a long flight... And no Star Trek but I saw The Traveller's Wife at long last.

Thanks for telling us about the second time, BBMISwear - and Happy Birthday!!

And thanks to you Olympia for what it was like for you. I empathise. It's not the type of film I'd normally see either. But Tommy has won me over.

I have to dash now for a post-flight cocktail and to see Brothers or myself - I feel quite nervous and excited. I'm also bloody knackered...

Hello from the USA!

Glad you arrived safely, WDW! Enjoy Brothers!!!!

And Happy Birthday BBMISwear! You've got nice jakish birthday presents this year, huh?

Thanks for your reports about Brothers BBMISwear and Olympia! I wish I'd at least know when I will have the chance to watch it... :( At least I know I can look forward to it!

Yay, glad you made it to Florida safe and sounds, WDW! Glad to have you in our timezone. :)

Here are my thoughts on seeing Brothers. :D

What to say, the movie was great and Jake was excellent. Jake's talent shines through once again. Some of the scenes had me tearing up and they were mostly Jake scenes. His chemistry with Natalie was brilliant. And I loved him with the girls. I really loved the original but Jake brought something very special to this one. Overall though I think the original was better except for Jake.

Also, there was a very good crowd for my showing, almost completely full and the next showing had a big crowd.

I have to say though that I have been really pissed to see the new Brothers tv ad that mentions the accolades that Tobey and Natalie have gotten but makes no mention of Jake's accolades....grrr!

Hi, WDW. Did you see "Time-Traveller's Wife" during your return flight? I'm curious to know what you thought of it.

I just got back from seeing "Brothers," and I'm happy to say that Tobey, Jake, and Natalie all did their best work to date. Jim Sheridan brought out the best in them. I was crying at the end, as it affected me very intensely.

i don't mean to start problems but i just thought this was interesting about the break up rumors and let me just state that i do think that jake did the right thing in not confirming or denying anything. i do like that he wants to keep somethings to his self.

shoe89, that was the most poorly written fiction I've seen today! LOL! Jake worked in Pittsburgh right up until TG Day! He was seen arriving at EWR on Thanksgiving morning. He had to get right back to Pittsburgh for Sunday. He was seen with his dad on Friday and with his mother out shopping on Saturday.(There'd been speculation he was "on call" for film- related business on Friday and Saturday.)

There's been more than enough nonsense speculated about poor Jake, and really what's most important is his work, right now. In spite of the unfortunate timing, at least the media focus has mostly been about Brothers. As it should be.

Morning all! Got round to seeing Brothers last night at the end of the longest day ever so new post!

Hi Uli! I saw mentioned somewhere just in passing that Brothers was out in Germany in March... I do hope you get to see it :)

Thanks Get Real! It's great to be here! I totally agree with your Brothers comments. I've not seen the original so I can't compare the two but I thought Jake really did something speacial with that role. That TV spot would have made me mad too. How can they miss Jake out?!

Hi Paul! I'm so glad you enjoyed Brothers so much! I definitely agree that we are seeing great things from all three leads here - by far the best I've seen from Natalie. And this was right up there with Graysmith for me with Jake.

I cried through much of it.

I did see Traveller's Wife on the flight yesterday. I don't like Eric Bana but I did like him in this. It moved me, even on a plane. I loved the scenes with the daughter. I thought the last bit was almost too hard to watch.

I'm begging you, PLEASE, please, please move on from this subject. Enough! Brothers is out!! Jake is being acclaimed in it!! Focus on that! I'm on holiday! Have mercy!

New post :D
