Falling for Tommy Cahill, with thanks to Jake Gyllenhaal

Greetings from WDW - and I mean that in more ways than one. Due to bad wind - the Gulf Stream's and not anyone else's - my plane didn't exactly rush across the pond. Nevertheless, at the end of a 24 hour day of being awake, I did get to see Brothers last night. If you were there you might have recognised me - I was the one sobbing into her hanky every time Jake Gyllenhaal was on screen. It was a very large screen, I was in row 4 - Jake loomed. And in a good way.

I realise that many people will be seeing Brothers over the coming days, weeks and even months. Therefore, I'll keep my thoughts on the film very brief here and do a longer review later on 'The Other Site', for anyone who's interested and also wants to chat with spoilers. But I will say that I encountered that perennial problem when seeing a Jake movie for the first time - removing that Gyllenhaalic hat is not easy, maybe it's impossible, and objectivity is elusive. But listening to the laughs, sighs and gasps that came from other members of the audience at almost everything Tommy said and did in Brothers demonstrates to me that you don't need to be wearing this hat to see that Jake has done something very special with this role of Tommy Cahill.

While it is debatable that Jake made Tommy too lovable, it isn't something I would complain about. Jake dominated his scenes, not just with what he said, but with expressions, body language and his sheer physicality. His ways of trying to make things right for Grace and her children rang so true and his love for his brother, perhaps the person Tommy is closest to in the world, is never in doubt.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Tobey Maguire in Brothers and even more so by how much I liked his character of Sam. Some scenes are hard to watch and they looked like they were painful to do. Natalie Portman has most definitely grown up and I don't think the trailers do her justice.

My favourite scenes were those between Jake and the children - I think I could watch Jake skate and snowball fight for hours. I've been trying to think of a word to describe Tommy when he's with the children apart from 'adorable' and 'sweet' - I've not found one yet. Both girls were wonderful and made their characters complex, especially Bailee Madison - and, for me, the little one, Taylor Geare, was simply perfect. I must do a shout out for Carey Mulligan - she is a fine actress and her scene with Natalie was one of the best of the film for me (even though it didn't have Jake in it - see, I can be impartial...).

Brothers was funnier than I thought it would be - mostly because of Tommy (the bar scene is most definitely one to rewatch). All three main characters were much more likeable than I'd expected. Everyone succeeded in making me care deeply for all three. Sam's journey is more believable and more painful to watch than I thought it would be. There was just one thing about Brothers that disappointed me - the use of music. This may be because all of my senses were overwhelmed so, next time I see it, I'll try and redirect my ears on occasion.

Finally, I saw big posters for Brothers and the Prince of Persia - this is a novelty for me. I heard a girl near me say 'Ooh! Prince of Persia! Cool!'. What it actually sounded like was 'Ooh! Jake Gyllenhaal! Hot!'

This post is illustrated with pictures from the Variety Screening Q&A of Brothers at Arclight, LA, on 3 December. The good news is that Variety usually puts up videos of these so stay tuned. Thanks to IHJ and Variety for the lovely pictures.

Hey WDW! So, you liked Jake's Tommy, huh? :D :D :D

Damn, how I wish I could see Brothers right now... I can't remember if I was that impatient to see Remdition back then. I don't think so. I guess it has definitely been too long since there was a new Jake movie... And all those reports about how wonderful Jake is is making it worse... :D :D

How many times are you going to see Brothers while you are in the US?? :D
Whatever else you will do there - enjoy your stay!!

Those new pictures of Jake are just wonderful!!!! I really hope there will be a video of this Q&A!!!

YAY!! You're there!! You saw it!! I'm so happy for you!!

I love your review (the brief non-spoiler one because, obviously, that is what we have to do right now). I have to say I love that you said you were sobbing every time Jake was on the screen because one thing I left out when I talked about it here on Friday was that I wondered if anyone would think I was weird because as soon as he was on the screen I started to cry. I simply cannot help this reaction - it just happens - every freaking time. I am so very glad I am not alone in this. :-)

I have seen a variety of pictures from the Q&A in LA and keep hoping for video soon...it looks too entertaining to not hear what these guys are saying!! *eyes and ears peeled*

I need to go back to Friday and Saturday posts to see if anyone else has talked about their experience with Brothers. I love that this movie is finally here and will be in the UK in just a little over a month. Everyone needs to see this movie!!

BTW - I'm jealous of you getting to see the PoP poster - my theater had the huge Brothers poster displayed but no Prince Dastan unfortunately. I'll keep checking!

Have a great time at Disney and please keep us posted on all the fun WDW!!

Hello!

Hi Uli! I heard soemwhere that Brothers would be out in Germany in March. I hope this is true and you do get to see it on screen. Maybe you should head for France!

I loved Rendition but I think Brothers is a better film, particularly in its construction. And Jake had much much more to work from.

I reckon I could see it a few more times! I definitely need to see it when I'm not so tired. I'm feeling good today so I'll see how I get on. I'm looking forward to getting outside today and stretching my legs after yesterday.

Hey BBMISwear! I hope you had a great birthday :-) Yeah, I did - Jake came on screen and that was it. I couldn't help it. The emotion of seeing Jake on the big screen for the first time in 2 years. And I was so proud of him!

I definitely think we could get video of this Q&A!

I couldn't believe it when I saw the PoP poster!

Off out to contend with the Mouse! See you all later - have a lovely Sunday. Do let me know your own Brothers experiences :D

Safe travels, Carol *)

I felt inspired to change my avatar! I hope some people appreciate it... :D :D :D

March? That's a long time to wait, but at least it would be a date!!!

Belgium and Netherlands where it will be released in December acc. to IMDB are too far away for me at the moment, with being so busy with work... France in the beginning of Febuary would be something, provided I find a cinema in Strassbourg or some other closer place that shows it undubbed. French is not my strong point... :D :D :D (and I doubt I could bear hearing Jake speak French anyway... :D)

I just read some posts from earlier this weekend and want to thank those wishing me a happy birthday - you guys are so sweet! And, yes, quite the birthday gift this year: Jake as Tommy Cahill!! *THUD*

I am crossing my fingers for Uli and others who live far away that Brothers hits the big screen closer to home in the months to come. Let's all think positive for them!

Have a good Sunday everyone! Have fun with the mouse WDW!

Good to hear that you loved Brothers.

The interview with Jimmy Kimmel was one of the worst interviews I saw with Jake.
He was behaving like a teenager doing these stupid jokes. I thought he had matured, but that is not what it seems.
He is a man who will turn 29 years and not a clown or fool.

Seems like everyone we know is falling for Tommy :)
and I am sure it's more than the Gyllenhaalic badge *g*

I dont want to read too many reviews before I go see the film myself, but your description is just right and of course, only makes me want to watch it RIGHT NOW!

Have fun! Maybe you can check out if there's PoP merchandise already?

Uli, you look great. :)

LOL, thanks!!! I thought that look is kind of diabolic with the eyebrow and all... And at least it's almost the same haircut as in the Ukulele pic... So I thought I could give that one (and you :D :D :D) a rest for a while...

Wasn't Brothers great? Everyone was great in it - I'm still getting teary thinking about "the scene". Jake was very believeable, very rough and prone to violence, almost losing it at the dinner table his first night home, throwing keys when he learns of Sam's death, but I loved too how he was with the girls, loving and responsible - and I did a good job avoiding spoilers because everything hit me full force.

Hello! Just got back in, earlier than expected because I couldn't resist seeing the Brothers matinee. I need to get a tattoo - 'My heart belongs to Tommy'. I liked the music better thhis time. I also only cried at the appropriate moments rather than every time Jake took a breath.

OMG Uli! You won't believe this but when I saw these pics last night I immediately thought of you and your Ukele Jake! The same grin... It's a HUGE improvement on the other one, and that's an understatement. Please don't see Jake dubbed into French. Maybe instead you'll have to pop across and see us in Blighty :D

Hey BBMISwear :-) That's quite a birthday gift! Mine's coming up soon, so I hope I can have Tommy Jake too. I had fun with the mouse and then I abandoned it for Tommy... Disney World is far too busy on a Sunday. I couldn't get on any rides. This coming week should be quieter (and hotter!).

Hi Monica :D I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the JK interview. Jake has always been playful in interviews and I have to say that I love it. I love the mix of the serious, thoughtful Jake (such as in the radio iinterview) and then the fun and comical Jake, with no end of anecdotes. He gives these shows what they want. He's a born performer and entertainer. I don't think he's a fool, in any sense of the word. Personally, I don't think age has much to do with it, speaking as someone who may never grow up.

But all that is as nothing when you see what Jake has done with Tommy Cahill! Jake has done us and himself proud. I think you'll love it, Monica :)

Hi Winterbird! When I saw Brothers again today, even at a matinee the rest of the audience were making all the right noises. You're gonna love him!

Hi Rubes!

Hey Bertie! You did so well not giving anything away - it's hard isn't it? I'm going to write my spoilery opinions this evening so do come along and say all the rest. The pent up anger was so well controlled by Jake/Tommy.

I hope everyone's had a good Sunday :D

Hi WDW and everyone I've just gotten to my hotel after a long day travelling.

Am tempted to go see the movie tonight but it will probably be tomorrow night before I see it:( Everyone's comments have made me want to see it right now but I can just about endure another 24 hours!!

Hope you are having a good time in Florida WDW.

I will be back once I have seen the movie.

WDW, your review of Brothers without giving anything away was perfect. I saw it Friday and wanted to comment then but I have been having a lot of computer problems. Anyway, I just wanted to say I loved it!

But unlike you and others, instead of crying when I saw Jake, I got this big grin on my face as soon as I saw his name and I couldn't stop. It's so good to see him again!

I was impressed with everyone's performance. You are right, Natalie Portman has definitely grown up. And Tobey knocked it out of the park. He and Jake gave me chills in one particular scene, they were so good.

Jake played a variety of emotions and everyone of them believable for his character. From Tommy's relationship with his father, the little girls, his brother's wife and most importantly with his Brother. The moments between Jake and Tobey really brought tears to my eyes.

I am going to go again on Tuesday....Oh, I saw the wonderful PoP poster and heard a few excited expressions from people as they passed by. Ok, women that passed by. :) I stood looking at it for more than a few minutes, myself.

Hope you are enjoying Disney World!

Hi Sweetpea :D I'm in Disney World in Florida so that's where I saw it - couldn't you tell?! I really enjoyed Brothers and this post gives you just about all my thoughts on it. I hope you get to see it, it's playing in lots of theatres so you shouldn't have too far to go. It's well worth it :)
