Making it real - Jake Gyllenhaal on how the cast gave Brothers its special reality

In an interview with Inside Reel, Jake Gyllenhaal talks about his research for playing the part of Tommy Cahill in Brothers and how having known Natalie Portman Tobey Maguire for years prior to the filming helped to base Brothers in a reality.

In addition to talking about how he visited young people in jails and juvenile halls and how he put on weight to 'give a realistic sense of what this person would go through', Jake tells us more about his friendships with Natalie and Tobey: 'In the case of Natalie and I, we knew each other for ten years before we started making this movie. So we have a relationship that spans enought time that you can't really getaway with anything fake. Tobey and I knew each other for a few years before that too. So it's just inevitable that when you're working with people that you know already there's a realism to it, and I think the type of actors that we all are, we want to bring the reality of our lives to the work that we do. And I think that makes for a different kind of subtlety and the characters exist based in a reality as well as in the world that they're being shown in in the movie. So that kind of balance of all that stuff makes it, I think, more real than you would expect.'

And finally, from Variety and thanks to IHJ, this is Jake's response to being asked the inevitable merkin question.

Finally an interview adult. I like to see Jake seriously.

You saw Brothers twice? That's great.

I think I'll do the same thing I did with Batman TDK: I watched three times in a week!

Luckily Jake can do both - funny and adorable on the one side like on Jimmy Kimmel and other talkshow appearances of the past and hopefully future (I would miss it a lot if that side of him were gone) and serious and thoughtful...

This may have been mentioned, but Brothers is 3rd in the box office at the moment :D the weekend gross being $9.7 million and its current IMDb rating is 7.8, only with 884 votes however, so get voting! Rotten tomato is at 56%.

Just some statistics for you :) I like statistics.

Hello everyone! Just got in from a lovely day - and it got hot and sunny - hooray :D I did get rather tired of walking past people all saying 'Ooh it's hot and sunny'.

Hi Monica! I like to see Jake being serious and I love to see him being funny - I don't think there should be one without the other. This is a very good one and I think it goes well with the funny ones.

I definitely think Brothers deserves multiple viewings :D I've come a long way to see it so I'm trying to cram the viewings in! I think you'll love it :D

Hey Uli! I totally agree, if there were no Funny Jake anymore, the Jake we've enjoyed for years, I'd curl up and mope.

Hi Silver! I mentioned thatin the last post but it's good to get all this extra info. I like statistics too :D That's not good about Rotten Tomatos - it's well better than that. Hmmm. We must give reviews!

I love both sides of Jake but I have a soft spot for the goofy one. I wouldn't find it very fun if Jake's interview were all as serious at the one you posted. A mix is good.

Awww, hot and sunny. I'm so jealous, we got our first real snow here yesterday and we have a storm alert for Wednesday. Can't wait to shovel all that snow! (insert the most sarcastic icon you can find here).

I'm glad you had a nice day. :)

I'm an optimist. I think the goofy side of Jake is going to get stronger, especially when "Nailed" and "Love and other Drugs" come out. Jake was born to star in romantic comedies. I have no doubt that he will knock people's socks off when they come out (BritPopBaby watch out! ;-))

I promised I would be back once I saw the movie but I got diverted by my other passion this afternoon shoes:)

We are heading to see the movie after dinner so I am on the countdown now. I would skip the dinner and head straight to the movie but my friend wouldn't be too impressed with that.

Hope you're having a good time WDW.

Will be back with my thoughts on the movie later.

Hi there! Had a lovely day - after a rainy start it suddenly and unexpectedly got very warm and sunny. I'm going to cultivate my lobster look...

Hey Olympia! Oh dear, I'll think of you that snow shovel. You could have a go at making a hot snowman like Jake's in Brothers!

Paul, I so agree with you :) After seeing Brothers I'm so desperate to see Jake in a comedy - he's a complete natural!

Carol! That's great! You could be just about to see it now - I can't wait to hear what you think. And shoes are good... :D

Oh yes! Jake in a a comedy will be lovely. Finally a movie of his that I`ll be able to watch completely without closing my eyes! That`ll be a nice change after Zodiac, Rendition and Brothers. :D

Fortunately, you should be ok with PoP and LAOD, Olympia! Although you may want to cover your eyes during the romping scenes ;)

urgh. my router at home broke, so i am without internet last night. have to catch up on some "serious" Jake interview. *g* I do enjoy him being silly though, just adorable :)

I think most of the critics on rottentomatoes are comparing the film with the original and it's never easy. Those who didn't do that seem to like the film fine. One consensus is the great acting assemble, so I still think there's chance they might get some acting nominations come awards season.

Still enjoying Disneyland and multiple Brothers? :)

I like this funny side of him, but he is exaggerating. The story of merkin, the tattoo ... what was that?
He should have shown a little more maturity.
He should have shown a little more respect with Brothers when he was talking about the movie.

Good morning everyone! Be very happy you can't see me, I'm wearing shorts.

Me too, Olympia! We'll have to pay very close attention...

Morning Winterbird! Blimey, I hope that internet problem got fixed. I agree about the comparisons - it's a no-win situation. But I think a lot of critics have been won over by Jake's oerformance in particular.

Hi Monica! I don't agree but that's ok :D I think a late night chat show is not really the forum for a serious discussion so Jake has other places for that.

Have a great day everyone. I'm off to the Magic Kingdom in search of anything PoPpy :D

now THAT's the kind of interview with Jake I like. Smart, informative and cuteness exuding from every pore. Thanks WDW
