[Updated] Jake Gyllenhaal in the Telegraph and Jake pulls out of the Ping Pong Tournament amid fears he's unbeatable

[Update] Jake Gyllenhaal interview in the Telegraph. This interview may have taken place a while ago (the NYC Brothers press day) but its good to see the publicity stepping up a pace - or even beginning - in the UK in adavnce of the opening of Brothers on 22 January. But what I most enjoyed was the little anticipation for Prince of Persia: '"Working on a movie like Prince of Persia was awesome," he beams. "It was great fun to be an action hero and to jump around, running off walls and fighting and having great quippy lines. And wearing only half of your clothes, of course!"'

As for the rest: 'The idea of competition, particularly in a creative atmosphere, is always there," says the younger Gyllenhaal with a wry smile. "And, if you don't acknowledge that, you are doing yourself and the process a disservice. That's what brothers and sisters and family are like. For instance, my sister had a couple of years before I turned up, but I have been with her since the beginning of my life, so there is always going to be a great bond, and always a little competition.'

'In the past, Gyllenhaal has often proved something of a reluctant interviewee, so when we sit down together a short while later, I ask if he is more at ease with himself nowadays. "I do feel that," he says. "I really do feel that way. I think that my director on Brothers, Jim Sheridan, started it off. He ignited something, which was like, 'You can be whatever you want or, if not, whatever you are is enough... He walked up to me in the beginning of this movie, and he said [adopts Irish accent], 'Jake, I just want you to know, you're playing my little brother in the movie, so I'm going to have to hate you most of the time.' Honestly, he was like, 'I f------ hate you!' But clearly the process worked."'

'"Because I made Jarhead and Rendition, people might think that I've now done a few war movies, but that's not how I see this movie," says Gyllenhaal. "I think that this movie is a journey, the journey that Tobey's character makes to get back home. It is intertwined with a lot of other family complications – this is a Jim Sheridan movie after all – but mostly it is about what this man does to get back to the people that he loves, and to his life."' On with the post!

Jake Gyllenhaal yesterday pulled out of the Ping Pong tournament. Reasons for this dramatic turn of events abound. Maybe Mario Batali protested at competing against the Unbeatable Jake Gyllenhaal, maybe Jake protested at it being called Ping Pong and not Table Tennis, or maybe it was because Duncan Jones headed to LA today from Montreal to begin preparation for Source Code and Jake is an essential part of this. I'll go with the latter.

The official site for the charity event made an announcement today: 'Yesterday, Jake Gyllenhaal pulled out of our ping pong tournament. We wish it weren't so, but unfortunately, a last-minute scheduling conflict has gotten in the way.' However, unnamed sources close to WDW revealed today that emails had been sent to aspiring ping pong contenders with the news that '"Yes, it's true- Jake Gyllenhaal has rescinded his offer to participate in our charity fundraiser" and "Jake had to pull out of the tournament yesterday. We're doing everything we can to get him back in, but it's not looking great, which is why we've taken his name off of the site".

When all is said and done I'm sorry because I was looking forward to seeing Jake wield a bat.

His busy schedule may have prevented Jake from becoming the Celebrity Ping Pong Champion of the World but he may take consolation in being hailed as one of the Sexiest Men Living. Obviously there was a typo because a mistake lists Jake only at No 6 when clearly he has even less competition in the sexy stakes than he does in the ping pong. An even graver error lists the pale and uninteresting Robert P as No 2.

There is speculation today that some event called the Super Bowl will include advertisements for Disney movies. It seems reasonable to think that there will be an explosion of people taking a break from judging tupperware to take an appreciative look at the Prince of Persia.

The BAFTA short long list was published today and the complete absence of Brothers from any category is a puzzle, unless it simply wasn't eligible due to its late release here. Neverthless, Crazy Heart was included and Maggie Gyllenhaal gets a possible nomination for Best Actress and may compete against Carey Mulligan. Peter Sarsgaard is also on the Best Actor list for An Education. It's likely that whatever happens, we will have some interest in these awards. It's also great to see Duncan Jones' Moon get some recognition.

And finally, a WDW interlude. I made it into Oxford today and came upon a rather imaginative use for those Avatar 3D glasses.

You're doing this on purpose just to stirr up some trouble aren't you? It's not a bat!!!! It's a paddle!!! Ask Jake, you believe him don't you? :DDD That's too bad about the ping-pong tournament, I was hoping for pictures.

I didn't know the Bafta's had 3 rounds of vote to determin the nominees. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for Peter and Maggie.

Nice snowmen, I was hoping for a pic of the one in a dress. :)

Hey Olympia! Stirring? Moi? I think we have to ask Jake this serious question ASAP and yes I will believe him, but obviously he'll agree with me :DD It is too bad though. It would have been fun to see.

I didn't know that about the Baftas either - it's quite a process. But yes, good luck to Peter and Maggie.

I couldn't take a pic of the dressy snowman as it was too dark! I'll see if I can find him tomorrow :D

Updated the post with a new interview with Jake in the Telegraph. At last (I hope...) British coverage for Brothers begins!

It would be interesting to see him in the tournament of ping-pong, but I think it was a very important cause.

I am enjoying reading the post by Duncan Jones on twitter. He seems to be a person in love, fun, nice, ...

I loved the picture with the snowmen. Very creative!

Hi Monica! I'm glad you liked the snowmen - they were getting quite a bit of attention. I'm enjoying Duncan's tweets too. Thanks for the link :)

It's supposed to be minus 19 degrees C here tonight - flip!

Yes, saw that interview earlier too - it was a good one. Jake's experiences with directors seem to be the driving force in his acting career. I was watching RDJ (Love him) talk about directors and he said, if you're doing a scene and after about 6,7,8 takes the director still says it's wrong then the director sucks (I guess after casting and pre-production there should be a good idea of performance capability). With each film and director experience his life has been greatly changed. Lifelong learning I guess.

Went to watch Avatar - what a huge disappointment :o( I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. Anyhow, my disappointment evaporated when in the lobby was a larger than life sized Prince of Persia stan. Needless to say my little was completely embarrassed and tried to drag me away from the stand. then, when I went outside, there was the Brothers poster - it was awesome. Now we just need to see lots of tv spots (not seen any as yet).

Its good that he's about to work though would have loved to see his competitive spirit in action. I'm sure if he can find a way to be a part of it he will.

My word is 'nuzzl'.... mmmm.. would I love to just..

Hi Sheba - Sorry you didn't enjoy Avatar but good that the stand and poster made up for it :)

Love the snowmen:)

Yipee Brothers publicity starting here at last!!

What a shame, WDW, that Jake won't be at the tournament. :(

But I heard Jake was in Montreal so I guess he must be doing something for Source Code. I wonder if there is some kind of prep work that is required.

I heard that some part of the movie is supposed to take place in NY's Penn Station (but I doubt any filming will take place there unless it's exterior shots (Of course I have no idea for sure)

I hope Maggie and Peter win some Baftas (do you know if they have won awards in the past?)

Don't really have anything to say, except THANKS, WDW, for having this blog, for keeping it updated and always interesting. This is the only Jake-site I still read, and you never disappoint me!

xoxoxo :*

Morning all! Brrrr :/

Hi Carol! It's great, isn't it!

Morning Sweetpea :D I don't think Jake is in Montreal yet, actually. Duncan Jones was there (although he's now flown to LA) and there was one tweet that said he was in Montreal with Jake but that was when we had the pics of Jake in LA and the tweet sounded like an assumption rather than knowledge. I bet there is some prep going on in LA over the next week or two with Duncan and Jake.

Duncan has said that the filming will take place for several months in Montreal and post will take place in LA so I think it's unlikely they'll be filming in the US unfortunately.

Good luck to Peter and Maggie! They've had no Bafta luck to date.

Hi there Anna! Thank you so, so much - what a nice thing to say *) It's good to know you're out there.

For all the Brits, my dad just phoned me to say he's reading a full-page aricle on Jake in today's Telegraph (no doubt this in the post is the online version)!

Are you still attending the ping-pong event Kate?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I do find it peculiar and rather unfriendly of anonymous people to use my name and not tell me theirs.

It'd be a little inconvenient to go to the ping pong because, as you probably already know, I live about 4000 miles away!

By the way, it's not ping pong, it's table tennis :D

winterbird said...

I need to check out the Telegraph!

Jake is unbeatable in Ping Pong? Heh... he obviously hasn't played ME yet! lol.

I want to hear Jake's imitating Jim Sheridan Irish accent! :)

Someone was discussing you going and wondering what you were going to do with your ticket now that he pulled out on wft2.

You flew to Miami to see Brothers, so flying to NY for that event would be no problem unless they got it wrong.

Ruby said...

WDW, when did you go to Miami?! :D You didn't send me a postcard! :(

How flattering that your travels are being discussed (inaccurately) by strangers on WFT2 as well as by anons here!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Winterbird! I've scanned the article, but it's worth seeing in the flesh, so to speak :D

Chuckling at the thought of you whooping Jake at the table tennis!

Pong, how nice that I'm being discussed anonymously. Er yes... they got it wrong.

Hey Rubes! Talk about creepy... Yes, you'd have thought I would've remembered going to Miami, wouldn't you?

How about a new subclause of my politeness rule? If anyone uses my name without giving me the courtesy of providing their own, they'll find themselves deleted. It's etiquette.

I'll get back to my Telegraph... :)

Anna said...

It would have been nice to go to Miami, wouldn't it? Especially now that it's so cold here...

(I'm cold today...)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anna! Me too - it's been snowing again. Good to see you!

winterbird said...

I heard that it's 0 degree in Florida too at the moment, all the oranges have frost on them. Maybe Jake pulled out cos frozen Miami is not good for ping poing.

I love that strangers' imagination about your travel schedule runs wilder than the English weather...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I've heard it's cold in Florida too, Winterbird. It's all this global warming...

Awww! Cute snowpeople! I don't know how in the world these lists are copiled, but noone is fit to come between Johnny Depp and Jake! In fact, Johnny is the only person on the list that doesn't piss me off! (Pattinson, pale, yes, but the Talyor Lautner child looks pre-adolescent!) WDW, is the picture of Jake with his "Sturgis" cap on, sitting with the man in the blue outfit recent? Is he Duncan Jones? I couldn't find it on IHJ.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Anon! I know, they're bizarre! They say people vote, but who votes?

I wanted to find a sporty pic of Jake and that one isn't seen very often. The only problem is, I can't remember who it is! It's not Duncan Jones. It's a sportsman from what I remember. I'll try and find out :D

TD said...

I'm gonna buy the Telegraph on the way home! Please please let there still be some left...Then I'm going to save it to read till after I've seen it!

I have to admit I'm a little lost about the whole batty ping pong thing. Whut? Huh? oops missed it!

I saw Avatar - loved it completely. I worship at the altar of Cameron - even tho he is a beardy!

TD said...

I meant till after Id seen The Film, of course. oops.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TD! If it's anything like here where you are, the shops will still have it. It's so quiet.

Jake was going to appear in a charity ping pong tournament on 13 Jan, but pulled out unexpectedly. Someone who's going kindly sent me the cancellation emails as they thought we might be interested. We had a 'discussion' over bats and paddles in the summer - it was very funny!

I loved Avatar too. I can't wait for the sequel.

But you were in Florida, not Miami (my bad) in Dec. at Disney World around the time that Brothers came out, I thought you saw it in the US:

I did go on holiday to Disney World last month, Pong, I hoped it would coincide with Brothers and it did, I was happy. This is simply fascinating.... It's hardly the same thing as going to NYC from Blighty for a day! Some loopy people must think I'm made of airmiles or have a private jet in my drive. Which of course, I do :D

Anna said...

It's you and Reese in the private jets, WDW! Honestly, you need to start thinking of the environment! ;)

I had to take another look at the Prince in the hood pic :D

GIRL it was called Ping Pong when I was playing it in my parent's basement when I was a kid. Don't go all fancy on me now. :P

(too bad Jake isn't in the tournament I would love to have played him)

You're right, Anna, I really must!

Carol said...

I think we may be able to buy the Telegraph here too. I must try for it on the way home.

I'm getting a bit impatient that there hasn't been any Irish publicity yet. Hopefully there will be some in the weekend papers.

Thank god it's Friday at last:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sweetpea! It is a lovely pic :D Well, in this neck of the woods it's Table Tennis and on that I am unanimous. I'd like to have played him too but I fear I would have been worse than useless. Now badminton would be a different matter!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Carol! I hope you can get hold of it. I'll put the scans up later but it's nice to have.

With any other film I'd say I was surprised by the lack of publicity, but with Brothers... it's all been very little very late. Let's hope we get something soon. This newspaper article is a nice beginning, though. I hope your bruises are healing up.
