Jake Gyllenhaal and Jim Carrey were first linked to the musical Damn Yankees a full year ago and since then there's been Zilch. Nada. All those of us who believe that if there is one actor with a musical in him itching to get out it's Jake Gyllenhaal can sleep a little better tonight because Damn Yankees has a director! He's Todd Graff and not only is he the director, he's also going to be licking the screenplay into shape. It will be a modern version of the original.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who's not heard of Mr Graff and this is a contrast to Jake's previous films where he has been influenced by the choice of director. It has been suggested, for instance, that Jake was insistent on Duncan Jones for Source Code after seeing Duncan's sensational debut, Moon. For an interesting discussion of how Hollywood is having to look elsewhere for big movie directors - including the director for Damn Yankees - look here.
As yet there is no date and a rewrite suggests the film may be some time off. However, after a year of nothing but hope for Damn Yankees, this is good news indeed. Now, to continue the sporty themed weekend, all we need is an update on the Joe Namath Biopic.
Very lovely and sporty pictures from IHJ.

Awesome! Can't wait to hear more! And to hear Jake sing again...it's been too long. Oh yes, info on the Joe Namath project would be perfect!
Thanks for this good news WDW!
:-)
Hey BBMISwear! It's such good news - I wanna hear Jake sing!
I hope everyone's had a good Friday. I'll be heading on home tomorrow :) Gonna put my feet up and do some Jaking :D
I know I've asked this before... but are the actors playing baseball topless in this musical? LOL.
Jake Work/Film news is always good news :)
*gotta go* Thanks for the news and those... ermm... hot pics!
Hi Winterbird! It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jake G must always play baseball shirtless. I have high hopes for Damn Yankees :). Film news is good news!
A musical will be a great challenge for Jake. And that's what I admire in him, always doing different characters.
Todd Graff "was one of the children's voices on the original "Sesame Street" (1969) theme" - LOL
He's only directed two things..Bandslam and Camp..
hmm..hopefully Damn yankees will be better..fingers crossed
Hi Wet Dark and Wild
I've been reading and loving your blog for a couple of years now. It's so wonderful!
I'm loving everyone's suggestion to reread Catcher in the Rye with Jake's voice in my head. This I have to do! I've always been partial to Jake's performance in The Good Girl...
JoJo
I wish he were doing the Joe Namath biopic. He certainly looks very similar to Joe N.
It would be nice for him to star with Jim Carrey in Damn Yankees too. I guess it will be a while before they gear up for filming though
thanks WDW for the updates
sweetpea
Hi everyone! Just got back home and I'm putting my feet up :)
Thanks for the info, Anon! They're taking quite a chance on this guy so I hope he does a good job :D
Hello JoJo! That's so great and thanks very much for telling me. I'm really glad you're commenting now. It'll be very nice getting to know you :) Oh do read Catcher in the Rye if you can. I must admit that when I reread it early last year Jake was never too far from my thoughts.
Hi Sweetpea! I think it'll be a while too but at least it seems a bit more certain now. I hope we get some news on the Namath thing, that's been years now.
Off to catch up!
I do love the baseball photos you picked for the post, WDW, but I have to say when it comes to 'baseball related' pics my favorites are the ones where Jake is wearing his Boston Red Sox cap And there are quite a few! :-)
I know when you are home and settled Jaking (sounds great!!) you will update the post with the GORGEOUS picture of Dastan just posted on IHJ! *THUD*
Happy Saturday! :-)
i guess i'm the only one who doesn't want him in the Joe Namath biopic.i still haven't lost hope that he might drop out.i don't like biopics in general.they tend to be boring.also i haven't heard very nice things about that guy...
Todd Graff - hmm well his diretorial resume is not so great.but he was/is a broadway actor so i'm going to remain optimistic.
i really want Jake to sing.i'm so excited about that. :DD and i don't even like musicals normally.
Hey BBMISwear :-) Ahhh the Green Monster...! Hold your horses, just getting round to it :D
Hey Gretchen! You're not the only one. I have no interest at all in a film based on an American footballer, I'm barely interested in English footballers! But it would be good to get concrete news on it, one way or the other. People keep assuring me that there is more to Joe Namath than football and tights. But I'm not a fan of sport biopics.
I don't like musicals normally either but I'm desperate to see Jake sing!
We've gotta have heart as we wait for the "Damn Yankees" project to move along. It will help if we think about the game and let Lola have whatever Lola wants. ;-)
Hi Paul! And I love the thought that Anne Hathaway has been suggested for Lola. I want to see her work with Jake repeatedly :D
I do hope Joe Hardy goes to baseball practice in his green shorts exactly as portrayed in your photo series on "How Jake Plays Baseball."
What's funny, is,this set of pictures happened around the time some young girls ran into Jake and Kristen Dunst, and they only recognize her, leaving Jake to wait while she signed autographs and he played with the dog. At least that's how I remember it.:)
Me too, Anon! I love that picture - Jake walking by, totally ignored (despie being so hot) while Kirsten signs autographs. It's a very funny picture!
