After the thrill last night of seeing the glorious Prince of Persia and Jake Gyllenhaal cover on the April collectors' edition of Total Film, how wonderful to wake up this morning to six sensational pages with some fantastic images! Jake Gyllenhaal, Jerry Bruckheimer and Mike Newell not only tell us how much they loved Avatar, we also hear about how the parts of PoP came together, its vision, its epic action, the reaso for its delay, the chance it gave Jake to take on hero Indiana Jones.
Also, that Jake repeated his Jarhead badass experience by accidentally punching someone in the face, that he put on 6 kilos of muscle through 'smoking and drinking' and how he got the part from Jerry: 'I broke into his office and threatened him'. Mike Newell tells us that Jake is not 'a big block of wood. He's an action hero made in heaven.' But, most importantly of all, Jake insists there are no sandals in the Prince of Persia! None! (not even with socks.)
With much gratitude to the Home of Pam's Obsessions and to Stephanie for the heads up.

Morning! I feel faint... love that picture of Jake spread between the two walls... (I can do that, ahem :D)
Have a great day!
"Can you believe some people don't like Avatar"
"Really, well there's something wrong if everyone likes something"
Hah, yeah, I know I'm in the minority.
Cannot wait to get my edition of Total Film. And so the publicity train ride downhill begins. Three months and counting.
I may faint too, WDW - I've only read the first page. :)
This is the first year I don't have a favorite movie at Oscar time - I've loved all that I have seen for different reasons. I still have to see a few more. :)
Bertie
Hi Sheba! You are the exception that proves the rule :D Love Avatar! These three months are gonna be great :)
Hey Bertie! It's such a great article. And it's good to hear more from Mike Newell too. I'm not sure about best film either, but I won't be disappointed if Avatar or An Eucation win, that's for sure.
Off to see Percy Jackson, having just watched the Winter Games opening ceremony - it's an Olympian day :D
Front cover, yaay :D I love the bit at the end where Jake whispers it's "very, very good"
I have a subscription to now EMPIRE and cancelled my TF one about 6 months ago!! Of course i'll still buy it though. I hope he gets a feature on EMPIRE too :)
I just finished reading - what a great article! I love Jake's humor in it and Mike Newell's thoughts. And all the "sand" movies. The pics are great. Won't be long now till we can see it! :)
Bertie
Oh my think i need to be fanned down, goodness knows how ill cope when i see the film stretched out i think....
Cant wait to get my copy of TF now
x
What a cool interview in Total Film!! :D
So glad to hear Jake, Mike and Jerry be so excited about the movie. nn of course Jake is so funny. Great stuff!
Thank you so much, WDW, for this treat! I've read the article twice already and I can't get enough. The images are stunning, I bet the look wonderful on printed page. Thanks for the high-quality scans.
I've always liked Mike Newell, he's smart and has a sense of humour, plus I loved this quote:
"Jake - you can always see into him. He has a very soft and gentle side to him. He's an action hero made in heaven."
Thank God he's not a "massive block of wood"; I'd stopped being a Gyllenhaalic a long ago if Jake remotely looked like John Wayne, God forbid!!
I know this movie has all the credentials for becoming a box office hit, but a part of me is still anxious about the fact that so much rests on Jake's shoulders as a first-time blockbuster action hero, and his career would suffer if the movie is not successful... Even Jake said he's "freaking out" in that interview...!
:)
Hello everyone! Just got back from Percy Jackman :D
Hi 13:43! I have a supscription to Empire too so I hope they do something special with PoP.
Hey Bertie :D I love these ictures, I've been having a good look at them, and the details on Jake's costume, just stunning.
I think we could all have a mass fainting fit, 14:42! Two hours of Jake as Dastan... it's all too much...
Jake's so funny, Get Real! I love hearing him joke, and great to get some interaction with Mike and Jerry too :D We've heard so little from Mike. It's nice to hear he was Jake's champion.
Hi Paola! OMG Imagine if Jake were like John Wayne... Yep, we wouldn't be around :D I love the interview and the pictures. I can't wait to see it in print. It is a big undertaking and it seems Jake is well aware of that - I also think this is hhis dream and I'm sure it'll be a huge success :D
Oh yes, at the pictures this afternoon, saw a huge poster for PoP! First time I've ever seen a poster of Jake in my own big cinema, since a very small one of Zodiac all that time ago! Loved it. And it was next to a Nanny McPhee one - the Gyllenhaals are coming...
I really cannot wait for Prince of Persia - I love the pic where it looks like he's hiding, supported between two buildings disguised as a clothesline. :)
I love that, 17:34! I will now think of that pic as the Clothesline Jake pic!!
Wow. Just Wow. I haven't even read the article yet and am wowing all over the place already! Thanks for this wonderful Saturday treat WDW! I'm saving the article to read a little later when certain people surrounding me head out for some winter activities leaving me with a quiet house :-) I need to concentrate on this!! But, in the meantime, it sure has been fun staring at the pictures!!
I'm wondering about the 'Exclusive Subscriber's Edition' notation on the cover. If the version that's sold on news stands is different will the PoP article and photos be different? Hmmmm.
I have lots of on line catching up to do and it's great to have a day that I don't have to go anywhere. Back later...
:-)
Hey BBMISwear, you're gonna love the article :-) I think the collectors thing means the cover will be a bit different but the article should be the same. Have a lovely relaxing weekend!
I read the interview you posted, WDW, and I gleaned this much from it: Jake and Gemma Arterton work together very very well. That is what will make "Prince of persia" work. I love her, and I love the way Jake plays to her. She is a princess worth saving and worth loving. If you were a princess, wouldn't you want a valiant young guy like Jake to come to your rescue? Of curse you would! That is what will make the movie work. All the battles that Jake/Dastan will fight are for a point: to save the princess.
Hi Paul! I do think that the chemistry between Jake and Gemma will be very important for PoP and it sounds like we're going to be on to a winner. Not that I doubted as I think Gemma is amazing!
For anyone interested, I did a thing about Percy Jackson on MB - here is something nonspoilery and here is the review with spoilers.
I love Jake's description of Tamina. What a nice post, PaulH! :)
Thanks for the interview, WDW, what an interesting read. "Jake - you can always see into him. He has a very soft and gentle side to him." You know, I love that about Jake but I think this is one of the reasons why people have trouble believing he can be a action hero. For all that action and fighting to be believable, you need some toughness and attitude. That's what Jake needs to pull off in POP. I think he can do it and will surprise a lot of people.
BBMISwear, I finished reading your Jake adventure and I have to say that you and Ted sure know how to tell a story! :D It was so much fun to read. Thank you so much for sharing this with the rest of us. :)
I'm writing this long post on my brand new home computer. Yay! It better let me post it in one shot! *crosses fingers*
Olympia
Woohoo! It worked! I love my new computer! :DD
Olympia
I finally got that quiet time I wanted to focus on the TF article. Loved it! I want to read it again...so much to take in and it really has me more excited than ever for the release of this film. The next few months are going to be so full of PoP stuff...happy days for all of us!!
Hi Olympia! I'm so glad you liked our story about meeting Jake. It was truly a pleasure to share as we knew so many people who felt the same way that we did about Jake and BBM and Heath would 'get it'. Congrats on your new computer that seems to help you with posting...Yay!!
I think I'll go look at those new Dastan pictures one more time. And I'm with you, WDW, that picture of Jake horizontal between the 2 walls? GUH!!
How many days until May 28th?! :-)
I am probably the only one on the planet who has not watched 'Avatar'
I am going to read the article in a bit. thanks so much WDW for posting
sweetpea
What a wonderful, entertaining and informative article. That cover definitely made be gasp out loud. Gorgeous photography! And the guy in the picture is not bad looking. :) Thanks, WDW.
Dani
Thank you so much for posting this wonderful article...i just finished reading it(it's about 1am here-I didn't want to be disturbed)!
Clothesline Jake! I love it!
JoJo
Morning all!
Yeay! Congratulations on your new computer, Olympia :D May it soon be filled with Jake and behave itself... I agree about that with Jake. Jake is gentle and warm but, as RDJ, said there is another side to him and it makes him such a great actor.
Hi BBMISwear :-) Ooh the contrast with Brothers when there was next to nothing. One thing about Jerry, he certainly knows how to promote a movie. I love that pic!
Hi Sweetpea :D It's so worth seeing - it's still playing so I hope you manage to see it.
Morning Dani :D Yeah, he's not bad, is he?!
That sounds like perfect nighttime reading, JoJo :D Jake is so multi-talented - he can even act as a clothes line...
Have a great day everyone. I'm off to see A Single Man if I can get my act together and make the trek.
I love how Mike Newell described Jake - able to see through him. It has so many good connotations for me, like honesty and goodness, courage. I think an action hero needs that - too much toughness and attitude comes off as bravado to me, or like a block of wood, as Mike Newell said. And the way he looks - :) Tough and gentle is the perfect man.
This film is shaping up to be really good IMO - nothing wrong with a good popcorn movie a la Indiana Jones, but this looks like it will have more too. I can't wait for it. I don't think Jake has to worry about a thing. I liked hearing Mike Newell's and Jerry's thoughts too.
Great article.
Avatar is just a good movie. But, it did not have the same impact as Lord of the Rings in me, for example.
I really love the interview with Jake and what he talks about Gemma. I think it was a fun movie to make. And with great challenges.
love that picture of Jake spread between the two walls...
Me too. Currently, it is my favorite picture of POP.
Hey Anon :D Tough and gentle is fine by me too - just what you want for a movie like this. I must definitely agree that there is nothing wrong with an Indiana Jones movie - I grew up on them and loved them. I remember how excited I was as a teenager in America with family when the second one came out :D
Hi Monica! It's such a great article - I'm looking forward to seeing Jake and Gemma together pubicising it. I reckon they had some laughs. I agree that this must have been challenging and fun all at the same time.
Hope everyone's having a good Sunday. Been to see A Single Man and now eating too much pasta while watching a Davis Attenborough programme about animal mothers and their (cute and definitely not very cute) young :D
Blimey - my word is 'dotcom'...
I saw A Single Man today, for anyone interested I wrote what I thought of it on MB :D
Morning all! Have a good day, although it's Monday... sigh...
Back to looking at Clothesline Jake for some cheer :D
Hello WDW, I had a quick glimpse at your review of A Single Man. Very interesting. Thank you.
When I get back to the UK, I'll go and watch the film.
I like Colin Firth, but I've been often disappointed in his choice of film roles so far.
I adore Julianne Moore in everything she does. She's a class act.
Have a nice day,
Paola
Hi there Paola! Thanks for taking a look at it. I'd be interested to know what you think. Julianne Moore is one of my favourite actresses (how I love The Shipping News...).
I hope everyone is having a better day than me!
