[Update] Maggie describes her amazing morning - Many congratulations to Maggie Gyllenhaal!

[Update] Maggie's reaction to the news: '"Because I didn't get any other nominations, I was so surprised," she says. "I was completely shocked and so excited. I love the movie and I feel so proud of it. I'm excited about celebrating it and getting dressed up. I haven't done work I'm more proud of." One of the first calls this morning came from her on-screen love and best actor favorite, Jeff Bridges. "Jeff called me this morning. He was barely even making words. He was kind of singing and moaning. He was so excited. I feel thrilled," says Gyllenhaal.'

'Her day, thus far, has been all about family. There's a sense of excitement at home, because her husband Peter Sarsgaard's film, An Education, is also up for best picture. "We woke up at 5:30," says Gyllenhaal. "I've been up forever already. I just got up really early and had coffee with my brother (Jake Gyllenhaal) and my daughter woke up. I haven't had a second to breathe." She might have a mimosa to celebrate, but her night is wide open. "I don't know what I'm going to do," says the actress. Source.

It's so good to hear that Jake is very much a part of Maggie's day as they celebrate.

On with the post...

In the wee hours of a Los Angeles morning, Maggie matched brother Jake Gyllenhaal with her Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Crazy Heart. Jeff Bridges has had enormous success for his role as Bad and so it is good to see that Maggie too has received recognition. No doubt there'll be some celebrating tonight among the Gyllenhaal-Sarsgaards. I'm happy to get a round in.

Not a dickie bird for Brothers unfortunately, but that's probably not a surprise. More glory, though, comes the way of An Education. It gets a nomination for Best Picture and Carey Mulligan receives a nomination for Best Actress. It also received a nod for best Adapted Screenplay. But with the good comes the surprises and it was a shame to see no mention of Peter Sarsgaard or for Duncan Jones's Moon. Congratulations though must go to Colin Firth! Doctor Parnassus has received nominations for Best Art Direction and Costume Design.

No doubt this post will be updated! A full list can be seen here. Includes picture from IHJ.

Yay for Colin Firth :)

Is it the first time nomination for Maggie? She didn't get one for Sherry Baby, right? Good luck to her.

Jake should attend and give emotional support!

Yay for Colin!

Hi Winterbir :D And yay for Carey too. But Blind Side??

This is Maggie's first nom. And yes Jake should go there and get hugged when she wins :D I wonder what this will do for their competitive streak :)

Wow, congratulations Magge!

I just loved her in Crazy Heart, she's beautiful in every way, and she had such a tenderness. Hooray! :) And Jeff!

Hi Bertie! I can't wait to see it. I'm pleased for Jeff but I'm glad that this time the honours are shared.

I was disappointed to see absolutely nothing for Brothers.

Yes, very true about Brothers. He was wonderful as Tommy. Maybe in the future we'll see another character like that - hope so!

Jake has a long career ahead of him, and I know he'll get lots of nominations and win. He's got a BAFTA now, for one so young. :*

You're so right, Bertie :D Jake has such a career ahead of him. And, as we know, Oscars arent the be all and end all - but they are a nice bit of froth - and won't hurt the pay packets either.

The BAFTA win was such a great thing for Jake :D

Congratulations to Maggie! This is great! I bet Jake is thrilled for her. He should definitely go. I need new pictures to add to my "Jake wearing a tuxedo and looking smoking hot" collection. :D

I am very happy for Maggie Gyllenhaal. She's a great actress and deserved it long ago.
Jake, Peter, Naomi, Stephan, everyone should be living this moment of happiness with Maggie.
I think they will be at the Oscars to support Maggie.

Quote from Jeffrey Wells about Maggie:
Gyllenhaal also has the most beautiful eyes I've been close to in a long time. There's something extra-vivid about them live. The last time I saw eyes this radiant and intense was when I got close to Elizabeth Taylor at a Manhattan party in the early '80s.

Not a lot of surprise in the nominee list.

The Blind Side is getting a lot of awards, at least for Sandra Bullock. Not a rom-com, it's a sport drama... but I guess because it's NFL, it didn't make it here... if Jake ever made that Joe Namath biopic, I hope it make it here!

YAY, congrats to Maggie!!

She was wonderful in CH and now both she and Jake have Oscar noms to their names. :D

I so hope he goes, with the fam, to the Oscars. I don't know if he would walk the red carpet but I hope to see him there beaming!

I didn't expect Maggie to get this nomination, but the Academy is very inscrutable. It denied her recognition before, so maybe it is atoning for it now. She *did* do a great job in "Crazy Heart." Peter might feel left out now, as his wife got an Oscar nomination, and his costar got one. I think WDW deserves an Oscar for interviewing Peter during the filming of "An Education."

Maggie has beautiful eyes, and she uses them beautifully in her acting.

Hi Olympia! Agreed :D It's been quite a while since we've seen Tux Jake...

That's a lovely quote, Monica :) I would argue that there is another actor with even more beautiful eyes, but I'm biased! Thanks for the link :D

I do agree, Winterbird, very few surprises - Maggie's was one of the few that did surprise me. I don't much about The Blind Side so I can't really judge but I'm never going to be a fan of sports biopics (with one very big potential exception) :D

Hi there Get Real! These Gyllenhaals are impressive :D I'm so glad for Maggie that she has this under her belt, like her brother. I wish Peter could have had his nomination too.

Hi Silver! I'm not sure actually. I know Jake had his parents and Chris with him. Fingers crossed Jake does go. I'm hoping he may present this year due to a push on PoP.

I was surprised too, Paul :) But yeah, it would have been great for a double nomination, with one for Peter too and, while we're about it, one for Jake too. But Maggie will be well supported and well hugged I'm sure today by Jake and Peter.

Ooh and thank you! I am thrilled that I feel a part of An Education's progress, it feels really important to me. I'm really looking forward to the DVD.

Congrats to Maggie on her nomination. I was surprised and delighted to see her name appearing among the nominees:) Really looking forward to seeing Crazy Heart.

It's great to see Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan nominated aswell. Disappointed that Brothers didn't get any recognition but I wasn't really expecting it to.

Kind of OT but I'm just curious as to what other people here thought of Up in the Air. I went to see it over the weekend and was expecting to be wowed after all I'd read about it. But it felt like it never got going and I didn't think it was one of George Clooney's best performances ever. I can't really see where all this high praise is coming from.

Looking forward to Oscar night now and fingers crossed we will see Jake there.

Hi! I'm sorry if it was already mentioned but I saw a small text talking about Jake on People.com (it's about the pictures on Sunday)

• Jake Gyllenhaal spent his Grammy Sunday hanging out with sister Maggie Gyllenhaal and her family over brunch at Ammo CafĂ© in Hollywood. "Jake was in a great mood and very playful with his 3-year-old niece, Ramona," a brunch guest says, adding that the actor even shared food with Ramona.

That's the cutest thing ever. Awww!! He seems to really love children! <3

Ohh and I'm so happy for Maggie, she really deserves it, she's a FANTASTIC actress!! (I'm Anon 20:41 lol)

Hi Carol! I can't wait to see Crazy Heart and A Single Man too.

Thanks for your opinion of Up In The Air. I'm hoping to see it next week but I have to say that as much as I love George Clooney, it's always been more the idea of him than his films! But I'll let you know what I think. I've not been to the pictures enough lately, mainly due to the snow and my neck. I must make amends!

Hi there Anon! It is a lovely image :D It's wonderful to think of Jake out having fun with his little niece. Maggie is fantastic :D

For anyone who's interested I've done a post on MovieBrit with my personal take on the Oscar nominations list.

That's wonderful news!!! I haven't seen the movie (yet), but I know Maggie deserves it. She's a great actress.

And other favourites nominated too... This year it might actually be worth it to stay up and watch. (Haven't done that since the BBM year...)

Congratulations Maggie! And I love this: "We woke up at 5:30," says Gyllenhaal. "I've been up forever already. I just got up really early and had coffee with my brother (Jake Gyllenhaal) and my daughter woke up." It paints a nice picture! (As does Jake sharing his food with Ramona)!

I, too, am so hoping Jake makes an appearance at the Oscars...I've also been thinking he may be presenting, WDW. We shall see. I didn't expect anything for Brothers but what a nice surprise it would have been, huh? Oh well. There will be other years.

Hey Silver...thanks for the heads up re: LJ...and please feel free to bug me about it if you don't get a message back in a few days from Ted saying you are friended (you too, Olympia, if you still plan to read the story).

Thanks for all the great updates WDW! Busy days!

:-)

I'm so happy for Maggie - my husband thought she had the most beautiful eyes in Crazy Heart too -but of course she does, just like her brother! ;)

I may go to see Up in the Air this weekend. I saw The Blind Side this past weekend - Sandra was great, but the boy who played Michael was just amazing - all the emotions played across his face and body language. Fantastic. I think I cried through most of it. :)

Hi Anna! It definity sounds like this may be one of those years to stay up. Not that I can see it at home. I'd have to descend on someone! It's a good list.

Hey BBBMISwear! It paints a wonderful picture - all of them round at Jake's and getting up at the crack of dawn - so exciting! I really hope Jake will be there.

Thanks, Anon, for your view of The Blind Side. It's not the type of film that gets much interest over here but I feel more inclined to give it a go now.

What a great day!

It's so good to know, Get Real! I love how Jake was a part of Maggie's special day. It feels like we're all there supporting Maggie :)

I am very happy for Maggie and Peter. And it's great that Jake was right there to celebrate with them.

I bet next year will be VERY different. Between Love and Other Drugs and POP I'm sure Jake will be getting plenty of attention.

Hi Sweetpea! It was so good that they were all together to hear the news. Oh yes, this is going to be such a year for Jake - and Source Code too - that could be quite something. I hope so for Duncan Jones's sake too. It's a shame he got no nominations for the movie Moon.

New post :D
