Jake Gyllenhaal - 'tender and hopeful and just so subtly wounded' ('I want an audience that wants to see the films that I’m in')

Today has a bit of the lull before the storm feel about it (not least because The Day After Tomorrow is on tonight in the UK - 9pm on E4), so this gives me what has become a rare opportunity to take some time out. Time to climb up that mountain, breath in some country air (upwind of the sheep) and admire the view. Think Brokeback Mountain, Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, smelly tents, grumpy horses and big blue skies. (I'm also hoping that doing this post will distract me from a big bag of tangy haribo sweets...)

This interview from the WDW Dusty Archives begins with one of those introductions that wins me over from the very first syllable. If you're going to interview Jake, be prepared to have him knock your socks off: 'Not falling in love with the very concept of Jake Gyllenhaal is a difficult undertaking. There is, first, his appearance, the blue eyes fringed with lush black lashes, tender and hopeful and just so subtly wounded. At nearly 25 — his birthday is Monday — the few underwhelming films he’s made (The Day After Tomorrow, Bubble Boy, Moonlight Mile) hardly suffered because of him. And the many very good ones he’s been part of have only been improved by his presence. Think Donnie Darko, Lovely & Amazing, Proof — and now, Brokeback Mountain.'

I could spend a long, long time trying to recreate that 'tender and hopeful and just so subtly wounded' look. Maybe I'll have a go.

'But despite his triumphs, the actor admits he’s had second thoughts about his line of work. “I think I always wanted to be an actor,” he says when asked if there was a defining moment in his childhood that led him to the craft... “It’s only now when I’m thinking maybe I don’t want to be one,” he laughs. “It’s only now that I’m questioning it.” Likely endearing himself further to legions of fans, he doesn’t hesitate for a second when asked what he’d do if he weren’t an actor. “I would be a chef and I would open up a restaurant with my best friend, who’s brilliant,” Gyllenhaal said firmly.'

'When he signed on for Brokeback Mountain, Gyllenhaal hadn’t yet read the Annie Proulx short story on which it was based, but he quickly remedied that. “Annie will work weeks, if not months, on certain sentences,” he marveled. “You know everything she’s writing has a very particular meaning, just like a poem or something … every word seems to be so important, and the movie, just the images, are kind of like word for word. To me, what I think what the movie’s saying, or what I find most interesting about it, is … it’s like Annie was walking through the forest and found some myth that was never told. It’s redefining a love story. We’ve gotten so bored, or frozen, with a normal love story between a guy and a girl, which is like guy gets girl, guy loses girl, guy gets girl again,” Gyllenhaal said. “This is a sort of a way of redefining that. It’s more about the idea of intimacy and love than it is about two guys having a love story together. That’s what I really related to. I was looking for a story that was about some kind of intimacy, you know? Nowadays, they’re not making those movies, or they’re not writing those movies so much.”'

'“It’s actually become very clear to me that people don’t really totally believe love has no bounds, because there are people who actually have a problem with this film,” Gyllenhaal said. “And it’s about a different type of love than we’re used to seeing … and they don’t feel that it should be that way. So if we say love has no bounds, we don’t really believe it.”'

'“In my opinion, these are two lonely people, and they find each other, and find comfort with each other, and fall in love. They feel alive,” he said. “And isn’t that all we’re asking for in our lifetimes down here, is to feel alive, and to feel like we’re moving and growing somewhere? That’s what these two people feel. They feel that way with each other.”'

These excerpts are from an interview with the SunSentinel back in December 2005. As always a pdf is available on request in return for chocolate.

Today I went to the movies and saw I Love You Phillip Morris and there in the foyer was the huge new UK poster for Prince of Persia, proclaiming once and for all its release date here of 21 May. I very subtly and artfully took a picture. The old poster has now been relegated to outside Screen 13. Excuse the bad picture - this was caused by the light reflecting off Ben and Jerrys.

But to connect this with Brokeback days, it reminds me of a quote from Jake in the outtakes of Out magazine, about whether he saw his future as an Indie It Boy or as a Hollywood movie star (as if one can't be a little of both and a lot more besides): 'I want an audience that wants to see the films that I’m in. I want to be able to have recognition, and have people go, “Oh, his movie’s coming out this weekend, and I want to see it, because I know every time I go into a movie, into a journey, it’s going to be an interesting thing.” There are actors that I look up to that do that. Like Tom Hanks does that. I’m interested in seeing his movies. Regardless. It’s not only to be entertaining. There’s going to be something cool in it. No matter what. There are people who’ve done that for a long time. Paul Newman… Those types of people that I really look up to as men that I want to be like. And that’s the type of career that I want. I want a lot of people to want to see my films. It doesn’t have to be enormous. But I do want that. I put a lot of thought into the movies that I choose and I do. It’s for a reason.'

Thoughts going out to friends down under in the path of that cyclone...

Lovely WDW, I wonder if Jake will still be associated with BBM or will POP be his main reference.

Jake G star of BBM or Pop or maybe they'll say both.

I will never forget Brokeback, it was a special movie that I hope will be considered a classic.

Can't wait for POP. Brothers is out on DVD this coming tues

Hi Anon :D Jake got his Oscar nomination and his Bafta for BBM - it'll be a label he'll wear with pride. And PoP will be the film whole new audiences see him in and so that'll be another great association. Enjoy the Brothers DVD, I have this rainy weekend :D

Jack Twist - Tender, hopeful yet subtly wounded.

I just love your BBM posts WDW!

Great post. It's always good to read and see pictures of BBM.thanks.

Sometimes I think unfortunate when some people comment that Jake does not want to be more associated with the BBM, because of various nonsense.
He just wants to be known for several works, not just one.

I read that he is great in POP (and he does not break the accent). I hope he's really great to show that he is not just the cowboy in BBM, but a great actor who can play multiple characters.
He proved that to us, but this time he will show to the general public.

I'm watching Seven.

Thank you so much 21:19 :) It is indeed a perfect description of Jack Twist. I love doing BBM posts, it's nice to have some time for one this weekend :)

Monica, thanks so much for that (posting at the same time) - a great comment and you speak for me too - that's exactly it! Jake is a fine actor and he and us may enjoy and celebrate his full range of roles.

That's great news about PoP (and the accent) :D

Ooh watching a Fincher movie! I'm watching the end of Titanic before switching over to the end of TDAT which is on TV tonight. It's a night of drama :D Thanks Monica *)

Thanks for another great BBM post WDW:)

Hope you enjoyed I love you Philip Morris. I went to it the other night and thought it was funny and heartfelt at the same time.

I'm home alone tonight and enjoying TDAT too. No sigh of my Brothers DVD yet:( I'm waiting in hope I'll get it on Monday.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Carol! I'm on my own tonight too so lots of movies :D I enjoyed Phillip Morris - I thought it was very unusual. I'll write a review of it tomorrow for MB.

I'm watching the end of Titanic and tutting over where they place the adverts... before heading over to an icy NYC :D

I hope you get Brothers on Monday. I have Sherlock Holmes on the way too - can't wait for that!

Have never gotten the impression Jake would want to not be known for BBM. He has always said how important it was.
But any actor would want to be known for more than one role and he will be. That doesn't diminish any of the roles he has had that he will be remembered for.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I do agree, 23:02 :)

Just finished watching TDAT for the 15th time. Seriously. Although it's not my favourite, it's my most watched Jake movie! It just always seems to be on TV :)

I love reading these interviews! They're new to me as i wasn't a fan of Jake during this time, so they're very interesting to read. I love the description of his eyes :)

I think this is the review Monica is talking about :)

This one pleases me :) I like that they've mentioned Jake, and the accent! I especially like this part - "it is no doubt in my mind that there will be sequels."

Hi Silver! I'm up late too - and it's all Jake's fault :D TDAT is such a fun film to watch - it's the one I've watched the most too... at least my dad didn't ring me up this time to ask if I was watching it...

I'm glad you liked the interview. This is a nice one and may be new to a few people, which is good :D Do look back through the archives here if you ever get a few moments over a glass of wine or a cup of tea, there are lots of Jake interviews from those glorious BBM days :)

Ooh thanks for the link! Great to read - how can we wait two more months - I feel like I may burst!

I hope everyone's having a good night!

I agree that "The Day After Tomorrow" is a fun film. Being a librarian, I'm interested in the scenes where they debate what is worth keeping, and what can be spared to put on the fire so they don't freeze to death! What makes life worth living? What makes us feel good about what we've done as a species, even as the wolves chase across the landscape? It gives me goosebumps that a library would be the place that people would find a safe refuge in. I hope people will continue to think of libraries as havens as budgets gewt tighter and more people become computer-addicted recluses. :-( Present company excluded, of course!

Thank you WDW for yet another lovely posting.I'm also guilty of watching TDAT countless times, because, there it is again and what could I DO?
One thing that has always bothered me about it is the burning of books... it must be deep and symbolic and I'm too dense. Seems to me that the chairs and tables would be a longer burning choice, and no books would be harmed in the making of this film...
Overthinking it when I should be focusing on Jake's subtly wounded and oh so blue eyes!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there everyone!

Hey Paul :D Yep, a library is a good place to end up in a natural disaster - lots to read to pass the tim (if Jake doens't burn it all).

Thanks so much JoJo! And that is a very good point, you'd have thought with all those chairs around to make snowshoes from, they'd have found some furniture to burn. Much better than sitting there throwing in books, a few at a time... I always think that every single time I see it!

I hope everyone's having a good Sunday. I've been running some errands and now ready to relax :D A beautiful day here :)

I think PoP will be along side TDAT ultimately. Pure fun! I know what Jake meant when he was describing his career hopes. There are a few actors...very few, that I will usually go see regardless of what they're in. I just know it will be quality work, and be intersting. Maybe I won't particularly like the subject matter, but I trust the actor. I think Jake is saying he is chosing his work projects carefully, because he wants to grow as an artist, and he wants to earn our trust as an artist.
And I am SO there! :)

Great BBM post, that interview is new to me too and I love that sentence: "Not falling in love with the very concept of Jake Gyllenhaal is a difficult undertaking." So very well put, I couldn't agree more. I love when interviwewers sound like gyllenhaalics! :D

That scene of the book burning in TDAT always makes me uncomfortable too, I just love books and I wish they had burned the furniture first, too. But if I remember correctly, they chose to burn the income tax law books first and I totally agree with that choice. :DDD

Just to let you know TDAT is on again! Wednesday 9pm E4 :P

I saw your tweet about the morons. It's sad to think there are people out there who basically have no life and no respect for others. I think, however, the story couldn't have been completely made up and the guy most likely said somthing rude about Heath to Jake (it's possible Jake did get angry, which is understandable) and got kicked out of the restaurant. Then went on to make a story out of embarrasment/jealousy. Pathetic really.

Silver

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi 14:20! I agree! And when I think how much pleasure I get out of TDAT - just love it :D

Hey Olympia! I love it when interviewers fall for Jake too! Yeah! If you're gonna burn any books I'd start with those :D Can think of a few others...

Hi Silver! I have to disagree with you on one thing :D There isn't a scrap of credence to anything of this - absolutely nothing. The guy's twitter/blog where it came from has lists of people he wants to see dead, obscenities, racist, hhomophobic crap and much more - all designed to offend. He's a nutcase. So yes, I wouldn't believe a single syllable. Most of it is deleted now, thank heavens. It made my blood boil!

TDAT on again?! Yes!

Anonymous said...

Oh really? :O I didn't even look at the rest of his blog. Hmm, i guess your right, he does sound like a bit of a nutcase! But the fact he seems to be aware that Jake is filming SC (he tweeted V.Farmiga and DJ) means he must be an insane fan, or just one of those people who follow Jake around and post rude comments on JJ etc. I suppose it's not even worth talking about really.

Yeay, he lives in Montreal and so this is a great way for him to try and get a name for himself, by mouthing off against the stars in town, he did the same with Kirsten!

Thinking nice, calming thoughts... :D I have new glasses and they've made my head go swirly!

Anonymous said...

Anyone can look at the entertainment sites and find out who is making a movie and who is in it. Or just look up the person's name on Google.
This person is full of hatred and jealousy about just about everyone it would seem and probably gets fixated on certain people then goes on to someone else when he's tired of that one.
He's mentally ill.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Agreed, Anon :) Sounds like a prat on the loose in Montreal going out after Jake - hmmmm. Not happy. And now he's emailing me! He's a pap... Mutter.... I'm still trying to think calming thoughts... I may break open my Dairy chocolate button easter egg - care to join me?

Anonymous said...

Dairy chocolate button easter egg. Yum!

Always great to see one of your Brokeback Mountain posts, a film that will always be in my heart. :)

Do the people working on SC know about this?
Think they'd be a bit ticked off.

Very old-school Easter egg you have there, WDW. And one of the yummiest. :D

I just had to comment when I saw the word verification is 'muckshed'. Must be where that Tweeting asshole pap lives.

All I have to say about the insane blogger....wtf?!?! Sorry but I call total bs. Even if something did happen that guy seems a total obnoxious, idiotic asshole who wants attention...ugh.

Lovely post WDW. Always love seeing BBM/Jack Twist et al. :)

Thanks 18:19! The bad thing is, I've already eaten three Easter Eggs this year...

They do, 18:22.

Hi Rubes! Definitely the best (after the Flake egg). What an appropriate word...

Hey Get Real :D Very true :( Thanks!

I have to go off topic and just say this is a historic day here. Sadly, we are horribly behind most civilized countries on giving all citizens health care but we are getting closer. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

That is good news, Get Real! I hope that, in the end, there is a health service for everyone in the US.

I've eaten all my chocolate buttons :(

The most we can do is not give credit for that type of person. No matter what you will say, that will make him feel powerful.

I hope everything is ok with you after receiving an email from this crazy.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Monica :) And thanks for the good thoughts - I'm relaxing now *)

I hope everyone's having a good Sunday evening :D

Anonymous said...

Think that's right - this "person" thinks he has some sort of power. People are talking about him and he thinks he's a big deal because of it.
We may be talking but its because we can't understand someone who would be so low and live his life that way.
And very soon he will be just a bad memory and that will fade too.

The Health Care Bill. You can see from some of the Republicans that they have wanted Obama to fail at everything he has asked for. That's even more to them than any bill that might be out there to help people.
They keep forgetting they aren't in power but keep acting like they're running the place.
Some have said if this Bill doesn't get passed then Obama has a failed Presidency and he won't get anything else done during his - as they think - one-time term.
This has got to be making them crazy.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Agreed Anon :) I'm not gonna comment on the Health plan as I saw a bit about it on our news here and my TV received the pleasure of one of my rants at the idea that providing health care for people who can't affort it is meddling with their independence... I'll shut up :D

I've been on the fly the last few days and just now catching up on things. Wonderful BBM post, WDW! It amazes me that even with all the BBM related articles and items I have, once in a while something pops up that I haven't seen before like this one. I thank you so much for sharing with us!!

Well I'm saying hello from snowy Montreal tonight! Ted invited me up for a visit and I couldn't resist! I'm happy to report that I have not run into the psycho blogger and if I do I will take care of him myself...no worries about that. GRRRR. We had fun bopping all over the city yesterday and today...no Jake sightings but we did see Kirsten and Russell Peters. (No not together - LOL)! Kirsten was looking really good I have to say. More bopping around tomorrow...somewhat recovering from our Saturday night out last night!

More tomorrow maybe! :-)

Monday at work with a cold - not good.

Hello to BBMISwear in snowy Montreal! :-) So exciting and I'm so glad you saw Kirsten and Russell. Just keep looking round every corner. Saturday night sounds like quite a night and I'm glad through email at least I was able to feel a part of it (just without the hangover!) Have a great day today and love to Ted!

I know, papoop, poor Atti!

It really is, Anon :)

They're very funny photos Laa deeh dah! I can think of better moments to get papped...

I'll do a post later with pics - just to let you know I can't link to IHJ with these Montreal pictures due to various reasons I've been discussing with Stephanie. So just so you know with the next post :D

Have a great day everyone!

I hope you have a great time in Montréal, BBMISwear and keep your eyes opened, you never know. :)

I can't wait to see the new Montréal pictures, especially if they're of Atti too. Do you think Jake knows how much we love his dog? Atti could have his own fanclub. :D

I've done a post with a picture, the rest are on www.iheartjakemedia.com (registration needed). As mentioned earlier, I can't link to IHJ directly with these - what a pilaver.

Hey Karen! He does want you!! Next time BBMISwear must take us with her :D

Hi there Gyllenhaalic :D I'm wondering what kind of gifts you want! But it'd be so so wonderful if BBMISwear got just a glimpse...

New post with exciting stuff in it!!
