Jake Gyllenhaal: Actor, Movie Star, Heart throb - WDW Guide Part 2

After yesterday's hors d'oeuvres, tonight we move on to the first course in our delicious, decadent and tasty Jake Gyllenhaal banquet. So, pull your seats up to the table, spread the napkin on your lap and tease those taste buds as you prepare to sample part 2 of the Gyllenfeast.

Title: The Day After Tomorrow
Date: 2004
Role: Sam Hall (aka Wet Sam)

Hotness: 9/10
Mascara-proof? Yes (unless you have a weird sentiment for wolves)
Chemistry: 7/10 (Emmy Rossum - her mind was on future musicals)
Sex scenes: No (it was chilly)
Hair: 8/10
Bonus features: stuffed animals, layered clothing, Manchester United

The Day After Tomorrow marked a significant step in Jake's career. No longer was he the older thinking woman's toy boy, he was now for everyone. He may have been the son in the film and not the lead but there's no doubt that all eyes were on Wet Sam's valiant struggles to save himself and his friends (at the expense of a lot of valuable books). Personally, this was the film that made me a Gyllenhaalic - it was something to do with the curve of the lip. The film may have taught me absolutely nothing about the environment and global warming but it did teach me an awful lot about snowshoes, Russian ships and public telephones. This is the Jake film that I have watched more than other (partly as it's on TV every week) and whenever it's on I always say to Mr WDW 'Ooh, I should watch that, I've heard it's very good'. Question though: Why did they burn the books and not the furniture? Another good sountrack.

WDW rating: 9/10

Title: Brokeback Mountain
Date: 2005
Role: Jack F******g Twist

Hotness: 9/10
Mascara-proof? Absolutely not
Chemistry: 10/10 (Heath Ledger)
Sex scenes: Yes (in a pup tent no less)
Hair: 8/10
Bonus features: bears, beans, August snow, hats, buckles, cool streams

Never mind those PoP ostriches, if you want something to tear your heart out look no further than Brokeback Mountain. How little I knew when I saw this film in January 2006 - Wet Sam transformed into Jack Twist, a cowboy that could melt your soul with one look from those eyes, matched unbelievably by Heath Ledger's Ennis Del Mar and all set against magnificent skies. I chuckle now when I think that I originally went to see this film because of the scenery... For the first time, Jake played the role of boy, man, husband, lover and father, all the time supporting and supported by Heath. And one mustn't forget Anne Hathaway and Michelle Williams. This wasn't 'just' a film, it was a life-changing experience and it's only now, four years on, that I can actually watch it and appreciate Brokeback Mountain as a film and realise how magnificent it is. Soundtrack: superb with etra points for Rufus Wainwright.

WDW rating: 10/10

Title: Proof
Date: 2005
Role: Hal

Hotness: 9/10
Mascara-proof? Yes!
Chemistry: 1/10 (Gwyneth Paltrow)
Sex scenes: Yes (thank heavens)
Hair: 9/10
Bonus features: mathematics, glasses, running, drums, nice coffee?

Proof... what a contrast to Brokeback. The hair was good, the look was great but, for me, this is the least enjoyable of all Jake's films, saved only by his extreme levels of hotness and a great love scene - marred by Gwyneth inexplicably crying through it. Gwyneth was pregnant through this film, not that she let anyone know at the time, and her mood permeates almost every scene. There are saving graces - thinking the drumming, the kiss, the love scene and the running. Lots of great Jake running here. However, only watch this film with a remote control, just so you can enjoy the Jake scenes. They are so easy on the eye. I didn't learn much about mathematics either.

WDW rating: 3/10

Title: Jarhead
Date: 2005
Role: Anthony Swofford (Swoff)

Hotness: 9/10
Mascara-proof? Yes
Chemistry: NA(although the chemistry with us feels pretty hot)
Sex scenes: A flashback (but plenty of other things to compensate)
Hair: NA (if pushed, 3/10)
Bonus features: scorpion racing, footsteps in the sand, Christmas

Never mind Proof, Jake was right back on track with Jarhead, a film that Jake led, despite being outranked by Jamie Foxx. By Jake's side was Troy, Peter Sarsgaard, and the familiarity of their real life friendship united the two in front of the cameras - despite the real and virual fights. The photography here is brilliant, demonstrating for the first time how well Jake suits desert spaces. The raining oil, the horse, the death road - all have an ugly beauty. The moments of intensity and tension are offset by the times of inaction, repetitive exercise and doubt and suspicion about loved ones back at home. Obviously, this film will always be known for Jake's santa hat dance - a fine example of its type - but there is even more to it. And the score by Thomas Newman (also composer of the Brothers soundtrack) is perfect.

WDW rating: 9/10

And so we continue!

But there was a sex scene in Jarhead!
Although a very very short one.
How come he only ever gets 9/10 hotness rating?? Damn, you're one tough cookie to please :D

Enjoyed your summaries of the films, WDW.

To think I watched TDAT for the first time without really noticing Jake. Sitting on a plane watching Proof, I thought this guy is gorgeous. And Brokeback broke my heart and like you, it changed my life. It turned me into a fan and here I am four years later just as passionate.

And in Jarhead you really get a hint of Jake's high energy levels - and lots of buff half nakedness! Not to mention good acting.

I must be about the only person who likes the movie Proof. I found the script interesting. Gwyneth Paltrow's character is un-charismatic though.

Thanks again, I look forward to Part 3.

Cheers

Tui

Jeez I don't even know what to say to this batch because BBM is included and now I'm a goner. Maybe I'll come back and say more at some point. And you chose such a horrible picture for the BBM segment - I don't like that picture at all! :-)

In the meantime, thanks for these movie guides - great job!

Hello!

Again WDW I disgree. I LOVE Proof. Maybe it's because Jake just takes my breath away in that film. I don't know what it is but I find him more hot in that film than any other. I also love films that deal with mental illness of any kind so that could be another reason why it appeals to me so much.

Congratulations on the reviews! I'm really enjoying them.

In fact, I noticed Jake in BBM. I was switching channels on TV and it was playing. It was starting, didn't know it was BBM, until they came to the tent scene. And I thought, oh,oh, I think this is the movie about gay cowboys. But I was already enjoying it and not biased, as I would be if I had know this was it in advance.

By chance, PoP openened around that date. And It Jake caught again my attention.

Then I bought Zodiac, to see him play in other role. and I liked it.

And went to watch PoP. ;-) in a hurry!

Have to get other movie from him ASAP!

Good morning all! And thanks for a fun night last night, Ruby :D Nothing like a spot of Jaking over a bunch of cocktails (to the sound of vuvuzuelas).

Hi Lena! Ooh you're right - a flashback sex scene :D Yes, I'm tough with the hotness rating because he's being judged against himself! If he were being judged against anyone else he would obviously be a 10/10!

Thanks Linda :D I'm enjoying BBM more again now after not being able to watch it for a couple of years.

Hi there Tui! Jake was definitely gorgeous in proof, I'll grant him that (I'm generous like that). Jarhead and TDAT are just a joy to watch.

Morning BBMISwear :-) Yeah, I can see how much you hate that pic! It was nice to think about BBM for this post - it's been a while because of all the PoP frenzy.

Hi Leslie! That is such a fun thing about these posts - the differing opinions about the films and Proof is one of those that divides opinion. There are others and it's good to be opinionated about them :D

Hi Eureka! That's great you saw Zodiac too - how I love that film. But I mustn't get ahead of myself!

Have a good day everyone! Is it Friday yet...?

You could have just left it at that tasty introduction and then that first pic... It took me minutes to scroll past it. *drool*

Is Proof really your least enjoyable Jake film? Whoa. It was the first one I watched after PoP in an attempt to watch all of Jake's movies, and I loved it instantly (so Tui, you're not the only one ;-)). How funny that we all have our own Jake favorites. :-)

Only now do I realise that Jake had 3 movies released in 2005 - I've watched his films scattered over the last couple of weeks and very much not in chronological order. Was there a reason for that high Jake 'density' in that year?

I'm not a big football supporter. But hey, yesterday we made it to World Cup final.;D
Spain went crazy last night!

I wonder, does Jake like 'soccer'?
Can you see him playing a movie about football?

Oh, now I get, WDW. Jake vs. Jake hotness ratio. Wow, um... don't see a winner here. Jeesh, this made me think what if he had a twin brother?? Wow...

Anyway, soccer mania yeah, congrats to Spain Eureka, you're on a roll here, first Rafa winning Wimbledon, now World Cup finals.
And yes Jake loves soccer, I remember reading in an interview that as a kid he said he loved soccer more than his family and wanted to be a pro player. Which is unusual, it ain't that popular in the US..

Thanks so much for the movie ratings, WDW. I love your system. For me Jake will always be known for BBM, it is a film that stands out on it's own and, to me, there is no comparison. Who can forget those soulful eyes of Jack F'n Twist?

Thanks for the movie guide WDW.

I'm off sick today so slowly working my way through them:) Haven't revisited some of these movies in ages.

Hey, everybody!

Thanks you people for understanding me... =D

Ummm... Like some said I loved Proof... And I agree: I think it's one of the movies in which he just couldn't look better... Didn't like Paltrow's perfomance so much... She just looked distant all the time and about to cry... I hate it when they do that...

I'm just writing as things come up to my head as I'm in a hurry, gotta go to work soon...

I love (don't know why...) the part in BBM when he asks Ledger's character "every four f****** years?!"... I don't know... It's the expression with which he says it... *sighs*

There were more things I wanted to comment about while I was reading your post, but now they slipped off my mind... XD

Waiting for the next post! =)

Bye!

Lovely post. You went to see BBM because of the scenery?! LOL! Is that a euphemism for two gorgeous cowboys? Because I really enjoyed that scenery. :DD

That's so funny about Proof. I didn't enjoy it very much but Jake looked so hot in it! I would give that movie a zero for the chemistry, you were generous with that 1. And I would give an 11 for BBM. The chemistry between Jake and Heath was truly off the charts and I think that's one of the things that makes BBM so powerful. It is such a beautiful thing to witness.

BBMISwear, I always think of you now when I see that BBM pic. It's always been my favorite of Jake and Heath (I have it on my fridge as a magnet) and I never thought I'd get to know what they were laughing about. :)

I saw tdat once and for me is the worst film of Jake Gyllenhaal. But it's like he said, "just accepted it because I wanted my agent received a greater number of scripts!
There's so much improbable in this movie, as the scene of the ship invading the streets of NY. All to add a dose of drama to save the character of Emmy Rossum. Speaking of Emmy Rossum, she is an actress too bad.
In fact, everyone in this film, including Jake, has bad performances.

Brokeback, Jarhead, MM, The Good Girl, Zodiac are the best movies of Jake. Zodiac and Brokeback are those movie that every time you watch, you feel something new.

Hello! Today poP left the cinemas here and I had to get out and see it off - an appreciative audience too. I've not seen it for a month and I loved it!

Hi Lady Ekster :) Proof is definitely one of my least favourite. Not because of Jake but because of everything else in it.

The 2005 spurt of movies was coincidental as they were filmed over a period of time but released all at once. Proof didn't even make the cinema round here and Jarhead and BBM were back to back. A bit like the 2001/2002 run of films. A bit like now too!

Congratulations Eureka! There are a lot of Spanish where I live and they were still covered in flags today! I'm looking forward to the final although I'd better not say who I'm supporting! But a good couple of teams.

Jake has said a few times during the PoP frenzy that he loves soccer - although he has been known to hype a number of sports as his favourite over the years!

Twin brothers?! OMG, imagine that... Hi Lena!

Hi Sweetpea :) Brokeback and Jack Twist are forever special and they have a very safe home in my heart.

Ooh, feel better soon, Carol *) It must be getting xlose to the big day now?

Welcome back Copycat! I agree about Gwyneth, crying through the love scene didn't warm me to her and I think she gave Jake a bit of a hard time (he later found out she was pregnant and feeling unwell through the shoot). That scene in BBM is so powerful.

Hi Olympia! I know, I was very kind with that 1/10 :D You have that as a fridge magnet - how wonderful! I think of BBMISwear whenever I see it too and it's made it an extra special picture to me.

I have the Californian Republic flag on my fridge that Ruby got me in SF. It matched Jake's MV shirt!

Hi there Monica! I do like how we like different movies, and we like a lot the same. But I do love TDAT - I think in a disaster movie there has to be a lot that's improbable and the ship did make me laugh. Always cheers me up TDAT but it may have been replaced in my affections now by PoP :)

I hope everyone's having as good an evening as I am!

I'd better get on with the post!
