Jake Gyllenhaal: Actor, Movie Star, Heart Throb - WDW Guide Part 3

Without much more ado, here is Part 3 of the WDW GyllenGuide. Actually, there is a bit of an ado thanks to the wonderful new old pictures of Jake Gyllenhaal with Peter Sarsgaard in New York back in February 2009 from IHJ. As you'll recall, Jake was in town to support Maggie and Peter for their play Seagull and it also gave him an opportunity to push Ramona on the swings. Which might explain the tutu...

And so on with the post - Remember that this is an opinionated guide, and different points of view are welcomed!

Title: Zodiac
Date: 2007
Role: Robert Graysmith

Hotness: 8/10
Mascara-proof? Yes (but you may lose your finger nails from hanging on to your seat)
Chemistry: 5/10 (Chloe Sevigny) 9/10 (Robert Downey Jr) 8/10 (Mark Ruffalo)
Sex scenes: No (although there is an attempt at a romantic dinner and he does bang on Mark Ruffalo's window at night)
Hair: 9/10
Bonus features: cartoons, Donovan, pong, squirrels in the fridge, Golden Gate Bridge

What can I say about Zodiac except to say that if you haven't seen it what are you waiting for? All right, it's a little scary in places, but much is suggested rather than shown, although the scene with the basement is the most terrifying example of Jake in Peril to date in my opinion - never mind those wolves and ostriches. Much has been said about Jake's relationship with David '65 Takes' Fincher but Jake has often said that he picks his roles for their directors and undoubtedly he learned a great deal in this procedural drama from such a meticulous director who put the story above the actors. Jake has said that he felt like an extra for much of the film. But just look at the result - from the opening frame, here is a film that grips and draws one in with the detail and the obsession.

Jake may be one of an ensemble but here the group is so skilled, the direction so clear that we are treated to some of Jake's finest acting. Robert Graysmith is a role of which Jake should be rightly proud. And I am thrilled that Jake took the chance to work with the master David Fincher - just look at the extras on the DVD and you get a real glimpse of that relationship. And Robert Downey Jr too! This film brought RDJ back into the mainstream and opened up doors. This film is the film of Jake's I admire the most, it has the soundtrack I love the most and the atmosphere that chills me the most, the recreation of the past that is most exact. While I may enjoy Hot Jake more in other films (mentioning no names,... Dastan), Zodiac as a whole is without parallel for me. I know it's tinged by my so vivid memories of LA and Cannes, but even so... And the RDJ and Jake commentary is a huge bonus.

WDW Rating: 10/10

Title: Rendition
Date: 2007
Role: Douglas Freeman

Hotness: 10/10
Mascara-proof? Yes (but tense, very tense)
Chemistry: NA (Not hugely applicable although the potential for sex scenes was great)
Sex scenes: Almost
Hair: 9/10
Bonus features: Morocco, gum, scrapbooks, Meryl

Rendition is not an easy film to write about. It had a lot going for it - that's obvious from the very first shot of Jake in a Moroccan bed with chest and a whiskey glass by his side. Take that one scene further and we have Jake sitting on a bath embracing his girl. But, from then on in, things became serious, very serious indeed. The interviews that Jake gave at the time demonstrate that torture was the theme and the goal was to raise awareness of western involvment in the unmentionable practices of torture in unnamed countries. The message was topical and director Gavin Hood's Oscar-winning history gave this film a gravitas, supported by Meryl Streep, Peter Sarsgaard and Alan Arkin. Arab and Israeli actors also shone in this film and, arguably, they - especially Omar Metwally and Igal Naor - were the stars of Rendition. However, Reese Witherspoon was clearly squeezed in as an Oscar winner but she was given nothing to work with.

I find Rendition awkward. Again the soundtrack was great, the imagery of the film was great and most of the acting was fine indeed. For me, this was a hot role for Jake - opinion is greatly divided on the Rendition hair but having seen it in person at the BAFTAs I loved this look on Jake. But looks aren't everything and there are flaws in this film. For one thing, Jake isn't in it nearly enough. I found the ending with the twist in the tail marvellous though. I saw this film twice with Jake in the cinema and no doubt this coloured my opinion of it, but three years on I can now look back on Rendition afresh and not feel so wrapped up in it. The cinematography of Rendition is particularly good - more of those Morocco colours - and now I can give it another go.

WDW Rating: 6/10

Title: Brothers
Date: 2009
Role: Tommy Cahill

Hotness: 9/10
Mascara-proof? Yes (unless you're a big Tobey Maguire fan)
Chemistry: 7/10 (Natalie Portman)
Sex scenes: No (but maybe there should have been)
Hair: 10/10
Bonus features: skating, kitchen decorating tips, batter

When I first heard that Jake was involved in Brothers - when I knew there was already a very good version - I was ambivalent. Jake's roles have always fascinated me, not just for what they depict but for why he chose them. With Brothers, I think it was very much because of Jim Sheridan. Jim is a great director when it comes to portraying families at times of trial and if anything motivates Jake it's family. We had had to endure two years of film delays - Nailed should have been on the way too - and when Brothers came out, I grabbed it and it was like cool rain drops in the summer desert.

However, after the initial euphoria of seeing Jake back on the big screen where he belongs, subsequent viewings disappointed me. The stereotypes in this American Irish family, the flaws in the plot (why was Natalie told that her husband was dead when he was missing?), the holding back, all have now left me with a film I may not watch much again. And this is a shame because Jake was indeed very hot in Brothers - and Jim appears to have heard our pleading at the time by including a gratuitous shower scene! Two of my problems with Brothers will always be that I don't care for Tobey Maguire and I don't think Natalie Portman can act. Speaking entirely personally, I think I was in to a no-winner with Brothers from the day it was announced. However, talk about hot... Love this look on Jake.

WDW Rating: 5/10

Title: Prince of Persia
Date: 2010
Role: Prince Dastan

Hotness: 9/10
Mascara-proof? Yes (but it may not be lipstick proof with the amount of smiling you'll do)
Chemistry: 8/10 (Gemma Arterton)
Sex scenes: No (but a wanting to be kissed scene that lasts for hours)
Hair: 9/10
Bonus features: Austrians, fountains, armour, gold glitter

I think Prince of Persia was a surprise to all of us Gyllenhaalics - I know I could hardly believe my ears when I heard that he had taken this role. But after years of competing for Batman, Spider-Man and Superman roles, here was something just for Jake and no matter what anyone thinks of the film (and I think it's great) Jake's Dastan is a character to adore. Ably matched by Gemma Arterton, here is a great couple from the romantic heroic past for cynical modern audiences to enjoy.

I've never hidden the fact that I love a good blockbuster but I was nervous about PoP. Would the accent work? Would Jake pull off the action set pieces? Yes and yes! Hearing Jake speaking with a believable English accent was superb and this was backed up with incredible action, excitement and gold! Everything in PoP glitters with sand and gold. I'm a Jake fan (Yes! I know I hide it well) and Jake's physical presence at the heart of PoP is all-powerful. From the floating silks to the Hasanssin dens, Prince of Persia is a delight to the senses. Speaking as someone who has played the games for years, I am so glad that Jake brought PoP to life.

WDW rating: 9/10

And finally...

Firstly, do check out this fascinating article on the CGI behind a few scenes in PoP. Most of the film, of course, was CGI free - it was actually made for real.

A WDW interlude - a hot summers evening encouraged a motorbike ride to a country pub in a village of thatched cottages and fields, protected by ruined walls, pheasants and fowl.

Includes pictures from IHJ, links and WDW.

Smashing WDW!

So Rendition wins the hotness rating, eh? Well can't argue with you there, I was about to explode when I saw that bathroom scene, Jakey boy really becomes a sexy man in that movie.

Also,"it may not be lipstick proof with the amount of smiling you'll do"--truer words were never spoken! My friend made fun of me after we left the theatre having seen POP, I was grinning like the Joker and my jaw was numb from the sheer unbridled enthusiasm.

Zodiac is impeccable.

Rendition is not a great movie, but still interesting. The theme is interesting and I remember I liked to read all those interviews of Jake at the time about politics and torture.

I still don't see Brothers!

Prince of Persia is a movie with a lot of mistakes in the script, direction and performance of Gemma Arterton. But that's what I expected from a film produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
Still, it was fun to see Jake having fun in this movie.

I don't understand it here:
But after years of competing for Batman, Spider-Man and Superman roles, here was something just for Jake

Hi :). Amazing Kate! Loved this part, oh what can I say? I love zodiac, specially cause he says my name a lot of times! Hahaha beautifully... Well in fact all those movies are great! Have a sweet night.

It's funny how a movie can have all the right elements, but still not 'come off.' This was the case with Rendition, even though it had such a stellar cast. But I have to agee with Lena, that bathroom scene was reaaly hot!

Haven't seen Brothers yet, missed it at the cinema and it's not yet out on DVD here in New Zealand. But I do like Natalie Portman.

Zodiac had dark and scary scenes, but what a build up of tension. An exactingly made film. And RDJ has real charisma in any role.

And I really liked Gemma Arterton's performance in PoP, I have caught her today on TV's Lost in Austen and she is a strong actor. She matched Jake's energy well in PoP. My one reflection on the film is that I wished that the director and editors had slowed the pace a little - at times it seemed too frenetic. All those beautiful sets and stunning scenery beg for the camera to linger over them a little.

How I wish Jake had been Spiderman.

Loved your pub picture - going on a summer's evening on a motorbike to such a place - how idyllic.

Cheers

Tui

I will remember the deeply tragic subplot of "Rendition" for a long time to come. At the very end of the movie, the realization of what happened to the young lovers hits you in the solar plexus, and you can never think about the movie again in the same way. This is an underappreciated masterpiece that happened to have Jake and Reese and Peter and Meryl and Omar (and J K Simmons) in it.

I'm not sure what happened to "Brothers" on the way to the screen. I don't blame Toby and Natalie and Sam Shepard, who have proven they can act in other films. I don't care about shower scenes, but if I did, then Jake had better ones in "Jarhead" and "Moonlight mile." The movie as a whole disappointed me, but I'm going to blame the director for it.

I saw "Despicable me," which almost lacks a link to Jake. Ken Daurio, who does the voice for an Egyptian guard in the first scene, was in "Bubble boy" with Jake.

Hi WDW, definitely more controversial this WDW Guide part 3!

I often thought it would be fun to see PoP on the cinema screen but always assumed it would be too non-pc to film. I used to play 'fantasy-casting' and once I realised Jake was still around (years after Donnie) I would cast him as the Prince. I was very pleased when I heard he had the part and as it was so obvious from interviews that he wanted to be an tiple-A-list movie star (as opposed to just an A) I was unsurprised. I am thoroughly and completely relieved it was something like Dastan and not a spandexed superhero, thank god.

I am surprised you gave Rendition look a 10/10 hotness rating. I know Jake can wear that classic old-style look but its not his hottest iMHo. Rendition was a worthy tale that translated on screen to boring. I feel sorry for Omar.
I reckon Brothers was cut short mostly by Heath's death "Jake had to go on the next movie" says Jim. Uh huh. Though it was obviously let down by other factors too. I like Tobey but he was clearly after his oscar and that kitchen scene fell very far short. I agree with you about the family elements of stories motivating Jake - even in PoP. I love this about him.

There are a number of harsher headers in the news digests at the moment, but the Variety article on B.O Analysis is OK to read. Have you seen it? When I see B.O. analysis I always reach for the deoderant. This may be appropriate however so I don't 'sweat it'. ;D

Morning everyone! Another lovely day :)

Indeed, Anon, each to their own :)

Thanks Lena! Ooh, Rendition Jake - smashing! Very sexy. Although not enough of him. I did indeed grin through PoP!

Hi there Monica! I do agree about Zodiac and Rendition. I think Jake enjyed himself more with the PoP interviews than with Rendition but I did enjoy the Zodiac interviews very much.

That final comment of mine relates to Jake having auditioned for those superhero roles and been unsuccessful. Jake spoke how his peers had these roles. But with Dastan, this is the first time the prince has been on the big screen and it's all about Jake.

Thanks Linda! Ooh that's true!

Hey Tui :D I agree about Rendition - it did have some great elements but I wish it had had more Jake in it.

I loved Lost in Austen! That was the first time I saw Gemma. I must watch that again, I have it on DVD. I hope you get to see Brothers :D

Morning Paul! The ending of Rendition does deliver a powerful kick. I was shocked when I first saw it - and the more I think about it the more I want to see it again!

I totally agree about Brothers - and yes, I think it was down to JJim Sheridan.

Hi there 9:14 - those are old pictures (February last year) but Jake does like to hang on to his old much loved shoes (and clothes) :D

Have a good day everyone!

Hey TD! Posting at the same time :D I knew this was more controversial but I thought I should say what I think. The earlier films I just enjoy but the later ones I feel like I've been following them from the beginning and I care really deeply about them and how Jake is portrayed.

Totally right about PoP. Much rather Dastan than a spandex suerhero (I generally don't like those films at all). That's interesting about Brothers and again I agree with you. I did read that article in Variety - made me think a bit. I think I'm very protective of Jake :D I think it shows!

Not sure about the Brothers "cut short". It seemed to me Jake only had another week of filming, if that, when Heath died. And he left for a bit and then was back to finish his scenes left in the movie.
I rem. an article where the paper in the town was contacted by paps. to take pictures of Jake on the set and they refused.

I have to agree that Natalie Portman isn't a good actress. She's seems like a magnificent person, but vie never been impressed with her acting.

He enjoyed the interviews of POP, because it was a movie that's just fun as opposed to a serious movie like Rendition.

I would have loved to see him as Bruce Wayne, but at the same time he is too young for the role of Bruce.
Judging from a recent interview, where he refused to talk about Batman, I think he regrets having lost the role.

I'm glad he did not Spiderman. The films are very bad and he does not need to act with Dunst.

Terrific, detailed, entertaining movie guide with this batch WDW! I enjoyed it all!

Zodiac - oh how I love it, oh how it still scares the s*#t out of me, oh how I adored the bonus features, oh how I loved talking to Jake about the bonus features, oh how this movie (and David Fincher) reminds me so much of you WDW!

Brothers - I'm one of the not so many that love this film. I think I kinda fell in love with Tommy Cahill (hot hot hot)! Understatement of the year: "Sex Scene: No But maybe there should have been".

I just read your comment to my comment yesterday re: getting Jake's attention when we see him and I agree 150%! I have endured "you're being too much of a fangirl" from Ted a couple of times now and I honestly don't care because A) Jake is so cool with it and B) It is so obvious how much he LOVES the attention - he literally giggles like a kid when he gets that type of attention so why not give it to him?!

Beautiful WDW Interlude photo!

On to all the stuff that must get done today (with lots of internet breaks I think). Oh...love the new/old photos from NYC and I noticed that tutu immediately and laughed. Sweet Uncle Jake.

See you later... :-)

I read through the post. But do not have much time to comment or pause. I'm traveling for work to Berlin tomorrow.

I'm not sure if I would be able to scream to call his attention. I'd be probably like walking in a cloud. ;)

But who knows how one reacts in such occasion? And for the pics, videos and your comments I agree BBMISwear, he loves the fans flattering "attention".

Thanks WDW.

PS. On friday I ordered a batch of his movies. I'm going overboard!
Once I watch them I'll be able to comment. (Brothers was not available on DVD yet...)

Hi there - just had a lovely day with Rubes and Anouska and Mr Rubes - thanks to them for fun, booze and nosh on another beautiful hot sunny day :)

Hi 12:51 :) I remember that article too. I recall that Jake had to leave Brothers at the end of the shoot for work reasons. I can't imagine Jake leaving for much else.

Hi there Tiffany and welcome! I feel like that about Natalie too. I loved her in Garden State but otherwise I'm left wanting more from her. But I do admire her as a person, very much so. Thanks for commenting!

Hi Monica :) I think Jake has some regrets too about some films that he wanted but he didn't get - but these things do work out for the best. I can't stand the Spider-Man films and so I'm glad I haven't had to watch him in them. I love Kirsten as you know and so I would never have complained about seeing the pair of them in a movie together :)

Hey there BBMISwear :-) I loved that you talked to Jake about the Zodiac DVD extras, cos I loved them. Love to hear different opinions aboout Brothers - Jake was indeed very hot in it. I liked that 'big' look. I do so agree about how Jake loves the attention - when he's on a red carpet Jake rules and he wants to hear it - and we love to give!

Good travels to you, Eureka :) Enjoy all the Jake movies. It's very difficult to know how you'll react when you see Jake face to face - I've seen Jake a fair few times now and my main emotion is complete happiness :)

I never thought he will be a naughty Prince in PoP and he did it well.
Role as Prince Dastan makes me in love with him.

I never watch Zodiac, is it that good? So curious because I've just realized Jake as someone since his role as Dastan.

Oh no, why there's no other Jake's movie in disc store in my country. I am so curious.

Can anyone bring me Zodiac, please? ^_^

A little late but a just wanted to say something brief:

Completely agree with your Zodiac write up. I found parts of it disturbing but I think it's a great film and I love Jake in it.

Brothers - I enjoyed Brothers more than I thought I would. I'm not a fan of Tobey but he surprised me in this film. Jake is at his hottest (looks wise) for me in Proof but I think Brothers is a close second. Maybe that's why I enjoy this film more than I should ha!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Ayumi and welcome! I do hope you get to see Zodiac as it's just wonderful :)

Hi Leslie! I do agree Jake is extremely sexy in Brothers - he's so big in it! Love that :)
