'We believe that when we all stand up together, we can make cancer history' - this is the message of Jake Gyllenhaal's PSA for Stand Up To Cancer, which aired last night during the MLB All-Star Game. There are two versions of the announcement - below, is the shorter.
In the longer PSA Jake and director Scott Coper talk about the impact of cancer on their own lives, including the loss of Jake's uncle. It does indeed affect us all, I know this too well like many of you, I am sure. Therefore if you'd like to donate to SU2C, please go to their site now.
Nailed Saga Chapter 426
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that David O Russell has left Nailed and now considers the film not his own. Nailed will now be finished with a new director.
A pause while the implications of this sink in.... This is sad news indeed - Russell put two years into that film, not just in (almost) making it, in the face of repeated shutdowns, but also fighting behind the scenes for the last year to keep it alive. There are a couple of key scenes still to shoot. The positive to draw from the news is that the financers are still maintaining that Nailed will be finished. Here is Russell's statement.
"This has been a painful process for me," Russell told THR on Tuesday. "The multiple production delays and stoppages, which were caused by David Bergstein and preceded Ron Tutor's direct involvement with me, have now spanned two years, and the circumstances under which the film would now be completed are much different on several fundamental levels than when we embarked several years ago. I, unfortunately, am no longer involved in the project and cannot call it 'my' film. I wish Ron Tutor well."
'Tutor also expressed his disappointment in an interview last week with THR: "(David O.) Russell conducted himself like a perfect gentleman. I understood his position. It really didn't have anything to do with him but with others, and we just reached a point where I couldn't do what he wanted. But it was a decent negotiation between the two of us. No lawyers. No idle threats, just two people trying to clean something up, and we couldn't get there. It was surprising and disappointing, but I understood." Added Tutor, "So we're going to go ahead probably with 'Nailed' and try to hire another director and finish it."'
This does give some hope: 'To do the reshoots, stars Biel and Tracy Morgan will be required to participate. Bergstein has said that there are contracts with these actors requiring them to do the reshoots without additional compensation.' Also that there is already an edited version of the film. And so the Nailed saga continues...

Morning!
That's really not good news for Nailed, isn't it. We're used to Jake's films being delayed but I'm not even sure this one will ever be finished. Why would another director want to finish it? It wouldn't really be his movie, there are only a couple of scenes to shoot and there were so many problems already. It doesn't seem like a very interesting proposition.
Loved the PSA, especially the long version. Jake always looks so good in blue! :)
Olympia
Hi Olympia! Y'know, strangely I actually feel more confident now that Nailed will come out. It sounds like the financer is very keen to get a return on his investment and now that negotiations with Russell are through he can focus on hiring someone to do the reshoots - and Jessica and Tracy are on a ontract to finish. So I think this is the end of one big long stretch of a stage and now we're on to another. I think there are directors who would be interested (and they might be cheaper). Interesting! I feel for David though.
I love it too - Jake is gorgeous in blue :)
I don't think I ever saw a movie go through this kind of difficulty before. At least not that I can remember. It was either going to be shown on the big screen (or these days go straight to DVD) or be scraped.
Does this mean Jake will be doing more scenes for it?
I loved the PSA
sweetpea
Hi Sweetpea :) The only scenes left to shoot are with Jessica Biel and Tracy Morgan - that's why they're still under contract.
Hi WDW,
This is very odd re: Nailed isn't it? As I recall another film with two different directors was 'Tombstone' - that film did rather well in the end. Most films with more than one director end up a disaster though don't they? Also, I understand David Russell has a very particular style so...??
Is Ron Tutor the mythical 'silent partner' of the other guy who made such a mess of it?
So strange, I do hope David O hasn't removed his name entirely - Jake would have made the film because of him, not whatever new guy.

PS I can see my blogger word for the first time in months!
Hi TD! Funny you can see the word now and couldn't before - are you commenting from an iPhone/Touch? Sometimes I get trouble from that - and the Blackberry.
It is odd, but most of this film is in the can so hopefully the spirit of Russell will survive through the film. This financer saved the film effectively by buying it at additional cost when he bought out the assets. But I don't know much about him. Jake definitely made the film because of David. Maybe he feels like us though that let's just get this thing out!
A calm, articulate, heartwarming appeal from our handsome Jake :) Cancer is worthy cause to support... nearly everyone around me, including myself, have been affected by it.
Thanks for the fast delivery of the video, WDW :)
About Nailed... all I can say is, if this film ever sees the light of day and turns out to be a good film - then all these will become a great story to tell. It could happen, you never know. Shame about David O. Russell departing though, think he's the reason why Jake took the film. :(
Hi there Winterbird! Good to see you :) Love how you describe Jake's appearance here - and yes that's just how he seems.
It could happen, and I hope we get the full story as a DVD extra. Extraordinary. I really want to see this film. Hopefully, one of these days, I will :)
Kind hearted Jake does another gig for charity. And he will have got a lot of exposure appearing in a spot in a baseball game.
And at least with Nailed there is some action taking place, instead of the nothing that has happened for the last two years. Here's hoping we will see the finished movie. It sounds like a movie that is light and funny, I would love to see Jake in another light film, as PoP was.
Cheers
Tui
The PSAs are wonderful! The Jake and American sports tie ins continue...first the PoP/NBA promos that ran throughout the Eastern Conference Finals and now the Stand Up 2 Cancer/MLB tie in. Being such a sports nut he must really love being connected to these sports leagues!
"And so the Nailed saga continues..." is right!! What a strange ride this movie has been from day one. But, you are right WDW, there is actually more hope now with the financier seemingly dedicated to getting this movie done and out. With so little left to film it sounds like this movie really is 95% David's film still and will be perceived that way. But, hey, if the filmmakers and the financiers can't come to an agreement to finish together I'd rather a finished Nailed that's 95% David and 5% another director then no Nailed at all! My heart skipped a beat reading that there was a version put together to review with David...oh to get our hands on that piece of video, huh?!
Yep...the saga continues indeed! Can't wait to hear more.
How many weeks has it been since we've seen a current day picture anyway? *fighting withdrawals*
Until next time... :-)
Morning all!
Hi Tui! I do agree it's good to hear something after the last two years of not very much. I love the script of Nailed - so funny. I'd love to see Jake in a role like this.
Morning BBMISwear :-) Yeah, jake seems to be doing a good job of combining movies and sports - he must love that. He should come over and watch the cricket. I totally agree about Nailed and how I'd love to see that video!
And yes, missing Jake surely the holiday will be over soon and he can get back to work at the Medical Center :D
Have a good day everyone!
