This evening, Jake Gyllenhaal will head a public service announcement for Stand Up To Cancer. The spot will air during the Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game (which begins at 8pm Eastern Time) and 'draws parallels between victory in baseball and the triumph of beating cancer through teamwork and collaboration with the message that an end to cancer is now beyond a dream; it is within reach.' The spot is in advance of a TV special for the charity which will be shown across networks in the US in September.
We've recently seen the very physical evidence of Jake's support for Stand Up To Cancer with his hoodie worn last month (perhaps a gift from the commercial shoot?). It is very good indeed to see this addition to the long list of charities that Jake supports - planting trees in Mozambique, encouraging young people to vote, New Eyes for the Needy, gay rights, the Green Schools initiative in LA, ACLU, literacy, Global Green, young readers and writers in prison, Haiti and LiveStrong (and no doubt I've missed a bunch).
On top of this, we've also seen Jake in films with a message, however entertaining that message has been - The Day After Tomorrow, Brokeback Mountain and Rendition, to name just three. There was, no doubt, a message in Donnie Darko, but I don't think I understand it (maybe something to do with smurfs).
Back on MV...
After recent sightings of Jake enjoying his holidays in Martha's Vineyard, there was another posted today - after previously 'yukking', this time he was supping - in the Chilmark Tavern. I can't post a picture of Jake in the Tavern but I can post a picture of the Tavern, which wasn't at all how I expected when I saw it. Much more intimate, friendly and low-key (even has a cashpoint).
Donnie Darko reborn on blu-ray
While we await the release of Prince of Persia in September, you could do far worse that spend some money on the release of Donnie Darko on Blu-ray. Ou on 19 July in the UK, Total Film has awarded this extraordinary film with 5 stars. It is clear that, despite this film being placed squarely in the culture of the 1980s and despite it playing with time, this movie remains a timeless classic. And when one wonders, as TF does here, what is it about this tale that still exerts such a pull. It's almost impossible to put a finger on it - maybe it's because it's almost everything about it.
This edition includes both versions (I can never decide which opening scene I prefer) and Jake's wonderful commentary. There are also some fun accompanying scenes, including Jake entertaining the crew with his infamous Irish jig. I can still only look at that through latticed fingers...
Includes scans from WDW, pictures from IHJ and WDW. Thanks to Stephanie for the logo!

Okay, since we're talking about it again... I'll admit it. The reason why I'm being weird lately is because I've now seen Donnie Darko. For the first time ever, yes. And it blew me away (if you need to ask, the reason why I was being weird before that was obviously because I had not seen DD yet; it was eating me alive). Might sound pretentious to say I got it. But I really think I did. And I was like, "Jake, you cannot be in every great movie I see. It's weird. I'm already a fan of yours, this is not necessary at all". But there you go: Jake Gyllenhaal happens to be in all these films I love. ;-)
Hi Alejandra! And there you have it in a nutshell - so well said! There is so much more to Jake - he is the star of some of my all time favourite films - not one but about 4! And there'll be more and more - all different - all wonderful and all memorable. Lovely comment :)
I am so glad he's doing this Telethon, I hope someone gets the PSA and we can all view it here.
I'm also glad he's enjoying himself on MV. He has earned this well deserved rest.

Aww, thank you for your words, WDW... And here I come again to ruin it. May I?
You know that quote from JD Salinger's "Franny and Zooey"? "I'm sick of just liking people. I wish to God I could meet somebody I could respect...". That would be Jake for me. I'm beyond the ability to criticize him at all. I can just sit back and watch him do. With Prince Of Persia, for instance, I was excited the minute I heard he was going to be in it. Even though I hadn't seen all of his films at that point, it seemed fantastic to me. Guess it's more than safe to rely on him to make the best choice out there.
It's amazing when you think about it: how does he find these scripts? Or is it more like scripts find him? It's like a fateful thing, where both simply had to find each other.
All I can say is that he's far better than even we fans can tell.
Btw, hope you're really enjoying your summer, Jake! Same for all Jake fans up there in the Northern hemisphere. :-D
Well I agree, I still don't understand Donnie Darko, but the soundtrack really rocks. And it's so funny in parts, as well as being frightening. Haven't seen the two alternative openings, must check it out somewhere. I enjoy the scenes with his bike up on the mountain. DD is so original - there's no film quite like it and Jake is so convincing - and young - in it.
Pouts - I want to be in Martha's Vineyard. That is a cute and un-tavern looking tavern.:)
Cheers
Tui
Hi Sweetpea! Great to see Jake doing that - he's not mentioned yet in association with the September event but it's likely. He's definitely earned the rest :)
You're not ruining it at all, Alejandra - not at all! It is amazing how Jake manages to exceed our expectations all the time. I can criticise some aspects of his movies but I've been watching them all for years! It took a long time. But I'm with you on PoP, I was thrilled Jake would be in that from the very beginning and I still am. I amsolutely adore it.
Jake has a great head on his shoulders when it comes to choosing cripts. I think that after his Oscar nomination he felt a little unsure of his direction but I think now it's going to calm down and we are going to have a succession of glorious films to enjoy. In a way the delays in Brothers and PoP may have done him a favour.
If anyone's interested I've just dne a new post on MB about Eclipse - yep, I clenched my teeth and went to see it, but only cos Mr Ruby made me :D That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
Hi Tui! Posting at the same time :D The soundtrack is incredible. The two opening scenes look the same but they have different songs - and I like them both.
MV would be lovely right now :)
Hi All,
I totally agree with everything said so far this eve, so ....nuff said!
Thanks WDW and BBMISwear for enlightening me re West Tisbury. For some strange reason I thought it might be environs de Boston!? :D

Just seen the video on JJ :) It's so good to see Jake after weeks!!! Such a lovely advertisement. Jake looks good :) I like the beard with the longer hair, balances it out.

Hi WDW and other Jake-aphiles
I absolutely loved your comment , Alejandra! It does seem that Jake always finds the most remarkable scripts-even going back as far as October Sky.
I'm sure i don't really understand Donnie Darko, but I get some sense of the meaning. His performance was amazing! I've never heard Jake's commentary,so i'm looking forward to that...
I'm unfamiliar with "Down With Cancer", but since I'm a Survivor myself,I guess I better find out!
Jojo
Hi there everyone! Just put the videos up - once YouTube decided to wake up... It must have had a heavy night.
Hi TD! No problem :D It is a very lovely little place with another of those village stores with deckchairs so you can chill out.
Morning Silver! I wonder how long the beard is now! I love the look here though and how Jake stares right at us. A great spokesman.
Hi there JoJo! I hope you hear the commentary - it's well worth it. I can find endless things to argue about with Donnie darko, it's one of the things I like about. It's also why I prefer the original, because it has less explanation. I'm learning about this charity too :)
New post!
