It seems very fitting that a day after we all got our first good look at Little Jake Gyllenhaal with his big specs and ruffly hair, we can now get to see a glimpse of Jake in one of his earliest roles - that of Leon in Josh and S.A.M. Released in 1993, this film provided the young Jake with his first opportunity to play a baddie. Also making its debut in this film was Jake's floppy hair, as seen in the family photos in The Day After Tomorrow. The glasses are gone which means that a) Jake now had contacts or b) he walked into everything.
There was someone else in Josh and that Strategically Altered Mutant: Martha Plimpton (aka Jake Gyllenhaal's first love). A few years earlier Martha had appeared in Naomi's Running on Empty and Jake told Gala during the PoP promo about his first crush: 'I remember it well: Martha Plimpton. My mother had just started 'Running on Empty' with River Phoenix. She couldn't find a babysitter. So I was at the rehearsals and I was smitten like crazy with Martha. It was the kind of love that probably only an eight year old is capable of.'
Jake also told GQ this year: 'I had such a huge crush on Martha Plimpton. I remember sitting with her. I must have been five or something like that. I mean, she was just strong and beautiful. That is when I remember falling in love with girls.' It would be great to hear from Martha what she thinks about this early adoration from Jake. It's also not known what Jake thought about acting in the same film as Martha a few years on for Josh and S.A.M., although not having seen the whole movie myself, I'm not aware that they had any scenes together.
WonderfulCon
Another couple of videos have turned up from Jake's WonderCon debut back in April. As well as confirming that there was a lot less Parkour in Brokeback Mountain than in Prince of Persia, Jake also has a choice word for those ostriches or, as they were labelled at WonderCon, Austrians.
I have to post this again...

awww he was so cute!
loved the hair,
and also the story of his crush
that's sweet and funny :P
hope you're having a good time :)
by the way thanks for posting that photo again , love it!:D
I was torn between little Jake and WonderCon Jake... and I chose to start with WonderCon Jake. He was looking so... well, wonderful! Very appropriate for the convention. :-)
As soon as I manage to tear myself away from the WonderCon interviews I will definitely check the little Jake vids. It might take me a while but... I shall succeed. Thanks for the fantastic findings again, WDW!
Hi Linda! I love the crush story :D And I was so glad to see some of Jake in Josh and Sam - the first time.
Hey Alejandra - Jake is superhot at WonderCon, absolutely gorgeous - the hair and the beard at the perfect length and I love what he says. Do check out little Jake - instantly recognisable :D
Smashing! What a treat, this post.
I managed to find the other 24 letters of the alphabet again, but seeing young Jake makes them go right out of the window once more. Awwwwww.
Without a doubt his worst haircut EVER for a movie though. *grin* And that Nintendo! Whoa, that brings back memories.
The first Wondercon vid presents such a conflict with that beautiful profile view of Jake. Which feature to focus on? The jaw, the cheekbones, the lips, the lashes? I'll have to watch it again and again... *drools*
I was thinking you might post that elementary school picture again, WDW (and will again and again in future posts - ha ha)!
I have the VHS tape of Josh and SAM (couldn't even find it on DVD!!) and I have to say I remember when I saw it for the first time it bothered me a bit that Jake was playing such a brat - LOL! I don't think he and Martha were in any scenes together but it's been a long time since I've watched...will have to watch this 'oldie but a goody' again soon.
I really liked that WonderCon interview segment - remember we watched so, so, so many of those back during WonderCon week?! Nice to see an old/new one - thanks for that!
What will tomorrow bring for interesting photos and videos I wonder. Never a dull moment around here!
Until next time... :-)
Yes Jake is one gorgeous man, lovely Wondercon footage.
Those Wondercon questions and answers are so interesting, I think they were just starting the publicity for PoP at Wondercon? Noteworthy that Jake felt himself a bit of an outsider on the set of PoP.
Aww about his first crush. I had to look up Martha Plimpton online, hadn't heard of her before.
Cheers
Tui
Wow :D I never thought i would see Jake in Josh and Sam!! That's great :) and OMG..that picture of little bespectacled Jake is just the cutest thing i've ever seen :P
Silver
Once again your site was ahead of everyone with little Jakey's school pic. Today it has taken off on the wide web, its everywhere now. Like Jake, this site is a trendsetter. Jake does look that the American version of Harry Potter in that pic.
he is SO adorable! Thanks WDW
sweetpea
Morning all! Friday and my last day at work for a whole week :D
Hey Lady Ekster - I think A and W fit the job perfectly :D Yep, that haircut is bleedin 'orrible. And what a contrast with those WonderCon videos - absolutely dropdead gorgeous - sigh...
Morning BBMISwear :-) It's most definitely a safebet that it's gonna pop up more than once again - absolutely love it. I don't think the film is even out on DVD - I remember seeing it years ago on TV but that's it. Good to see you!
hi Tui! Yes WonderCon, right at the start of April, was at the start of it all and we even had a friend there to report on it, if you go back through the posts. She did a good job. That was an interesting comment about feeling like an outsider although it sounds like everyone made an effort to make Jake feel at home and British for the shoot!
Morning Silver! I was so pleased to see the clip too - I've been trying to find video of it for years.
Thanks so much Jake Fan! I know, it's absolutely everywhere today. It amuses me sometimes when I see things on news reports etc when we've known about them for some time. Thank you :)
he really is, Sweetpea :D My pleasure!
Have a good day everyone!
Hi WDW,
Gosh I'm missing new photos of Jake! I wonder what he's up to.
I finally got to watch my BluRay of DonnieD and my new-had-to-be-bought-to-make-it-work-at- exorbitant-cost- cyberlink software reported that PoP:SoT was the most commented on/anticipated release. It had it at No. 1 in front of IronMan2. T'was nice to see. DonnieD was excellent of course, v spooky.
Try this link, its been doing the rounds so you've probably seen this before but anyway:

Me too, TD :) Miss him...
Ooh I have to know more about the software as I think I'm going to need it - what's it called? And was that with a blu-ray external drive? Sorry to go OT but I'm getting one of those and so I need any tips :D If you don't want to go into it here, you could email me :)
Very nice to hear PoP is getting such a buzz - they're pushing it on play.com too.
OMG! I hadn't seen that before! And it's definitely going in the post as it tallies well with me going on my holidays! Thanks TD!
omg that yearbook picture killed me.god that's just way too adorable for me to handle.damn.
i've seen Josh&S.A.M. twice actually.first time when i was a kid, don't remember exactly how old i was.i remembered that i've seen it before watching the second time for Jake in library(they had a VHS tape of it and i don't have a player anymore) when i saw the kid with the pad on his forehead.lol.i think i had liked it as a kid but as a 23 year-old...not so much.Jake's character was a little shit along with his onscreen brother.
here some very crappy pics i took from the tv.IHJ didn't have pics from these scenes(maybe it has now idk):1,2
Good to see you Gretchen! Let's hope that one of these days Josh and SAM does come out on DVD but Leon looks like a horrible little boy (with the hair to match). I love your pics - thanks for attaching them. One will make a great addition to this evening's post :D
