It was recently commented upon in the comments of WDW whether Jake Gyllenhaal has any French. We've heard him talk about reading the great dead authors, not to mention his completely unfathomable dislike of dinosaur studies, but what about his languages? Upon looking around, it seems that Jake answered this question when the subject of Dennis the Menace raised his head in a Prince of Persia phone interview.
The French interviewer from Phosphore recalls receiving a phone call from Jake at one in the morning (time is relative when it comes to Jake). They compared Dastan to Dennis the Menace and asked if Jake agreed: 'Who?' 'Deunisse ze Menaisse.' 'Sorry, I wish I could speak French with you, but I don't understand.' The interviewer had to spell it out ... "Aaaaaaaah, Dennis the Menace!!'
Here is a Rendition flashback to a little bit of Jake talking a little bit of French:
Jake also recalled that France was the location of one of his childood traumatic moments: ''Um (long pause) I'm a little freaked out by heights. I never thought I was but I am. I remember I went to the Eiffel Tower when I was little with my parents. I thought I would like going up, but when I got to the second level I was crying and I didn't want to go up - I was eight years old or something. My dad was like, "He's coming to the top! That's my boy!" Yeah, and he stayed down on the second level.'
Talking of Dennis the Menace, Jake mentioned him again during the PoP publicity and we should be grateful Dastan wasn't dressed in red and black stripes. In this interview 'A long-haired Gyllenhaal, still in costume, sat down for an interview halfway through the Pinewood shoot, looking appropriately handsome and heroic in knee-high boots, leather trousers, a wide-open linen shirt, and two daggers affixed to his belt.' On whether Dastan has some Indiana Jones in him 'Oh yes, definitely, along with Dennis the Menace and all the rest. I like that Dastan's a mischief-maker, a bit of a curmudgeon, that he nearly always thinks he's right and that he's quite sarcastic and wry and above all very cheeky.' You can read the rest of the interview here.
And finally...
I was very fortunate to spend the day today with my good Jaking friends, Ruby Anouska and Winterbird. We go back a long way and today we gathered to wish bon voyage to Winterbird. Bon chance!

Hi All
What a lovely post to come home to after suffering a 2 hr delay at Tunisa's airport for the trip home. Glad to be home and am now catching up on the posts that I've missed.
Tunisia was hot, hot ,hot but lovely in a French/old colonial way (how appropriate was tonight's post then?)
I see the beard is still firmly attached!!
CS
Welcome black, Claire! Wow! That's an appropriate holiday :D Tunisia sounds lovely - and hot, hot, hot is good. It is indeed still welded on Jake's face! I'm wondering if it'll come off for the Stand Up 2 Cancer Telethon on the 10th... Good to see you!
Glad you had such a good time. :-) This internet chatting is good fun, but in real life with friends and a couple of drinks... fun times.
Whenever I hear someone speaking in French I have to think of The Adam's Family... A weird cognitive connection, but true. "Oh Tish, that's French!"
Personally I would love to hear Jake talk in Spanish - my fave language by a mile. I remember him saying he speaks Spanish in the Jimmy Fallon show, but that may have been utter nonsense, of course. ;-)
Sticking to French, I guess we'll have plenty of French Jake in LAOD, judging by the trailers. *naughty grin*
Hiya Claire, good to see you again! :-)
Ah! You found the only video I ever saw of Jake speaking French. Being a native French speaker, you can only imagine how much I love to watch this clip. :) I remember the first time I saw it I couldn`t believe my ears (and couldn`t stop squeeing and rewinding :D ). I bet he picked up a little French while filming TDAT in Montréal, he was there many months if I remember correctly.
Olympia
Hi Lady Ekster! Indeed it is, although each of my good friends tonight I met through Jake on the net - a very nice thought! He brings us together :D I don't think Jake speaks any Spanish - I vaguely remember him somewhere sometime saying he doesn't. But yes LAOD will be full of French moments :D
Hey Olympia! I love tis clip too - it must be as lovely for you hearing Jake speak French as it is for me when he does his Brit! Jake's spent so much time in Montreal now with SC and TDAT - he must have picked up some French :D
Beard love!
On a non-beardy note, I would give my right arm to sit down and have a chat with him. His brains are a hundred times sexier than his biceps (though you know, he can keep both).
Hi BR,
I couldn't agree more... It's definitely the brain that keeps me interested.
I would love to hear his Italian, actually. Pretty sure he has a bit of Italiano floating around up there.
I wonder if he ever had a go at reading Dante? I think he'd like it.
cheers,
lemniscate
Morning everyone! Monday - ugh.
Hi BR! You are so right but, yes, doens't hurt to have both :D
Morning Lemniscate - I can imagie Jake speaking Italian :)
Have a good day everyone!
Hello WDW and everyone
Yes, Jake's brains are really appealing - and really on display in that French interview about Rendition. Over the years Jake had been really eloquent about his movies, coming out with thought provoking comments particularly to the foreign press.
So glad you got together with your net Jaking friends WDW!
Cheers
Tui
Hello All,
I got really excited, when I heard him say: Malaga and Madrid in Rendition. So I would squee for a full sentence in spanish. It's weird though, living in LA, where spanish (with mexican accent)is also spoken he did not pick up a little.
So French is the closer he got to a latin language. He sounded nice!
Yes LadyEkster! I'd offer myself as his spanish language/accent coach... Or I could have him as exchange student here.
WDW, I envy your Jake gathering. I whish I new some spanish fans I could join. Mean while I'm enjoying it here. ;-D
Talking of Dante. I'd love to see him play Don Juan Tenorio.
Here are some lines Ines says to Don Juan after he told her how he feels about her:
"Oh God! Silence! How can I stand to resist, with my sighing, any longer, without dying, ah, such longing, Don Juan?
Ah, to silence, for pity’s sake, turn, for hearing you seems to me
to bring my mind infirmity, and cause my heart to burn.
Ah! You have doubtless given me an infernal potion, oh some charm that helps you overcome a woman’s purity.
Perhaps, Don Juan, you possess an amulet a thing of mystery that draws me secretly like an irresistible magnet.
Perhaps Satan set in your eyes his fascinating gaze his seductive maze, of words, and the Love he denies to God. Ah, what am I to do, but fall into those two arms, if you continue to shatter my heart in two?
Don Juan, it’s no longer in me to own the power to resist you: no, I turn to you as the river flows that runs down to the sea.
Your presence maddens me, your words hypnotize me, and your eyes fascinate me, and your breath envenoms me.
Don Juan! Don Juan, I implore you in your noble heart, of pity, either tear my heart from me, or love me, because I adore you."
.

I hope you like it.
Morning WDW! Jake in France....mmmmm... maybe we should have all gone to Paris and retraced his French steps :)
The bubbly pic is lovely! And thanks for the well wishes :)
Hi Eureka! That is a lovely piece. Takes me back to my college days :)
Hey Winterbird! It was such a lovely day (and the champers wasn't bad either). Yep, a French road trip sounds good!
oooooh! I'm squeeeing for triggering a post! (or almost, perhaps I shouldn't assume - Lol!) and such wonderful comments! Its lovely to hear him speak French and I do love it as French is the closest I come to speaking a language other than English, however it would be wonderful to hear him speak Italian hmmmm, or Spanish - I admit isn't it a bit surprising for an LA native to not speak a bit of spanish? Another sexy language to hear him speak would be Anglo-Saxon/Elvish - now that would be cool! or is that just the historian in me...? ;D
Thank you so much WDW. btw, those champagne glasses look simply debauched...as they should!
TD
I think the only thing French about Jake would if he liked their food and wanted to cook some French dish.
A neighbor of mine, who loves legos, sent me this link to POP Lego vid. I think you already posted this a while back, WDW, but with POP DVD coming out next week I thought I'd post the link again. It is narrated by Jake

sweetpea
Hey TD! You did indeed trigger the post :D It got me thinking. Me too about French. I speak some German but my French is my best. I studied Anglo-Saxon (along with Latin) and that is very possibly my favourite too. jake mentioned how much he enjoyed the recent Beowulf movie (I absolutely loved it) and I would love to hear him narrate an Old English poem. Wow. Yep, the champagne was wonderfully debauched :D
Hi Sweetpea - Jake's been to France quite a bit so I'm sure he's very knowledgeable with their cuisine :) Yep, that's been posted here :D It's a great vid.
Blogger's playing up again - definitely a good idea to save comments before hitting publish! (sigh...)
Hi Laides, I have complete off topic Q - the answer really drives me mad bc I kind find it ...
I hope it's okay WDW????
Anyone know a one word translation to "Frauenversteher", which is negatvily translated with wussy, sissy, wimp, milksop ... but in germany it's this particular word is not bad mouthing but nice. It means a man who understands women and their habbits ... (Like JAke ;) ) ANYONE???
In the old days it could have been: gentleman but the definition of that word seems to have gone more wussy too.
How about suave?
TD
Hi there Sasha! I always like that kind of question - and I think TD has knocked it on the head. 'Suave' is just the word I've been looking for.
It's been a busy day/night and so apologies for a short post. Normal service will be resumed :D
Thx TD and WDW *bighug* - I think it's the closest we can really come to the -english word for- "Frauenversteher" in a good way :D *YAY* Thank you ladies - it really did my head in, do you mind I even dreamt of it...
Why can't I just put things to rest??? DAMMIT!
Hi there Sasha! Glad we could solve that one for you :D
