Jake Gyllenhaal - Le Grand Yummy

I have come to the conclusion that there may not be any cameras in New York City. I have to admit that this irrefutable and indisputable deduction did come as something of a surprise to me, but I can see no alternative. Jake Gyllenhaal continues his quest to eat at every restaurant, milkbar and cafe in the entire city and still no photographs. Not a sausage. This is despite numerous sightings. On Friday for instance, no doubt inspired by my own experiences at the Foodie Festival in Oxford the other week, Jake was seen at Le Grand Fooding event - 'Le Grand Yummy'.

The tweets continue a worrying trend and theme, which I think you'll pick up on: 'Sittin next to jake gyllenhaal right now. He looks like a lumberjack.'

'Uhh Jake Gyllenhaal (sp?) is here. He has grown a beard and looks manly.'

And the pièce de résistance: 'Jake gyllenhall at the foodie show at PS1. Big red beard!'

On Saturday Jake was seen at an Italian restaurant: 'Jake Gyllenhaal at Robertas in Bushwick tonight. No body guards or shades just a full beard. Was friendly.'

Someone else also saw Jake in Bushwick: 'just saw jake brokeback mountain gyllenhall!!! full beard but yet so handsome!! bushwick brooklyn.'

So.... to sum up, Big Applers should be looking out for a very hungry Jake Gyllenhaal with a big red beard looking like a friendly, manly lumberjack. How can you miss him?

Judging by the poll, the vast majority of Gyllenhaalics - or at least the ones who have noticed that Jake has a beard - want the face pet removed and ritually buried.

Princess of Persia

Gemma Arterton is continuing her takeover of the movie world but she pops up in this positive review of the 'delicious' Blu-ray: 'Arterton, while preferring her arthouse movies, had a great time playing a Middle Eastern princess in 500 A.D., with Jake Gyllenhaal appearing as the prince of the title. "I still enjoy the spectacle -- and that film in particular," Arterton says in an interview. "I was sort of sad that it didn't do well at the box office because I thought it was actually kind of original and it was beautifully shot and it was a different world and it deserved to do better than it did. Who knows why it didn't do as well as it should have?"'

Who knows indeed, but the dollars continue to roll in from the DVD/Blu-ray and, speaking for myself, I have come to love this film so much, when I watch it now, with it still looking glorious on my own TV set, I can almost feel the sun and sand on my face. And I take umbrage at certain people who say that they don't see Jake as 'leading man material'. Watching Jake Gyllenhaal on the big screen, you need to use more than your eyes.

I've watched PoP 2 times in the theaters and the movie definitely should have done better. The critics were too harsh as well. But it's all water under the brigde now.

I'm crossing my fingers for LAOD to perform well at the b.o. and hopefully it'll be well received by critics, even if it doesn't get awards attention.

Thanks for the updates WDW. :)

Thanks JF! My pleasure :) I'm really impressed by how good PoP looks on the TV. It's still such an immersive experience watching it. I'm a little embarrassed to admit how many times I saw it in the theatres - more than once, anyway :D

Hello WDW and everyone

Yes Gemma was right about POP. It was beautifully lit and filmed. And the parkour sequences in it were original.

People like POP - 6.8 out of 10 for 40,000 users on IMDB.

The critics seemed to get into a bitchy frame of mind and went from there.

Cheers

Tui

RED beard? Ok, NOW I m worried :D
And by the way - I was watching TV yesterday and there was "Killing in the small town" on - movie directed by Jake s dad. It was decent and also intense, I might add..It was nice to see some of his work :)

Hi Tui! Oh yes, I love the colour and light :D And yep, I agree about the critics - maybe PoP was just too delightful for them.

Hi there Lucia! It's got to be very bush by now... That sounds good!

I hope everyone's having/had a lovely Sunday :D

Maybe it was just the timing of POP. It might of done better a couple years ago. Or people just thinking it was from a video game and had no interest in seeing that.
I still think it was successful in the fact that tho it wasn't a big blockbuster, it was far from a flop. Naturally wanting to do 3 then it wasn't what they wanted. But I think just 1 worked just fine.
As said earlier at one point everyone was excited about the Oscar buzz about LAOD and now its the feeling it won't do well at all at Oscar time. Would think if we're going to give up on it we should wait until at least December...agreed..ha.
Speaking of Oscar you never know there might be technical nominations for POP. Or, certainly, costumes. Would think Disney would present those for consideration. (To refresh their memories).
The latest George Clooney movie tho not the type of movie to be a blockbuster. It wasn't going to have that wide an audience. But its first week it made 13 Million (and less each week) but they called it the new Clooney hit.

Hi KC! Noone's giving up on LAOD - instead it's an affirmation that it's not the awards that count it's the fact that Jake's made another bloody good movie :D Oh, the PoP costumes were just gorgeous...

And yes when it comes to box office takings, it's most definitely relative :D

Sure there are cameras in NY. And if some of these sightings took place at events with other famous people attending, paps must have been there too. BUT my guess is that Jake doesn't want to be seen by us. Not yet. Not until promotion for LAOD starts. His will overrules all the cameras in the world.

We will probably get new photos next week, with the New York Fest interview. Hoping on that (and kind of anxiously waiting too).

It seems to me that people need to be fans of a movie like Prince of Persia in order to drag themselves to the theaters. And of course, you can't be a fan (that will want to go and watch every new sequel) if you don't give yourself the chance to see the original. Those who are watching it in their homes now are mostly loving it and watching it more than once. But I think the comfort of sitting in your own room to watch a film is what will prevail. For all films. It's a pity, really. But cinemas don't help much to change that. Not here at least. I'll still go to the cinema, tho. Still involves a sort of ritual for me. And I don't care that much for comfort at home, to be honest. :-)

Prince of Persia is a beautiful movie and I'm grateful it was made. We'll have that forever.

Less than a week to endure silence now. We can do this. Come on! ;-)

Hi Alejandra! Yes, jusy a week to go :D I know just what you mean about going to the cinema - I absolutely love the whole ritual of it. It's good that people are enjoying PoP at home but they would have loved it on the big screen :) I go to the cinema an awful lot and these days I don't tend to watch too many DVDs, Jake's films being a big exception. Although ironically I'm watching Robin Hood this evening as I missed that one :D I'm usually so easily distracted watching a film at home. But how great that we have PoP forever!!

You are so busy:P
But you are so thoughtful and kind to answer every post:)
Hope we don't have to see a homeless Jakey next week:)

"I wouldn`t say he`s an A list actor."

This was from the earlier post discussion, I just wanted to clear this up, Jakey G is known as an A list actor here in America.

Although I personally hate the high school figure of speech.

But I do believe the HW wants actors who bring in the box office unless its independent films which Jake seems to want to graduate from now that he's getting older. Let's not forget he starting filming POP when he was what 27 or 28. That age is like grade school for actors in HW.

About the beard, I think its one of two reasons why Jake hasn't shave. Laziness or a big F%@*U to all who think he is only a pretty face.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

My pleasure, Hui! Thanks for taking the time to comment :)

Hi Jake Fan :D I do agree about the beard - I think it's also a bit like wearing a hat for Jake. Maybe he feels like it protects him a little and he's certainly living his life doing his own thing at the moment and I really like that however much I miss him :D But yes, I'm sure there's some laziness in there too :D

First a huge thank you to Lisa for her recap of LAOD!!!! Thanks WDW for posting it for us!!! I can't wait to see this movie!

I have to say I love all the NY sightings! The reason we aren't seeing pics is that the paps rarely go to the boroughs so if Jake is in Long Island City for the Le Grand Yummy then the paps would not be looking for it. Brooklyn does get paps on occasion but the reason celebs like Maggie and Peter moved there is that they wouldn't be hounded. I would love a pic although as much as I like Jake with scruff this beard seems a bit much, lol.

Btw, Momofuku Milk Bar is one of the best places for foodies! They have the best deserts like crack pie and compost cookies.

And I agree with Gemma, I am disappointed at how PoP did at the box office. I am glad the DVD/Blue Ray sales are very good.

And I do hope Jake shaves a bit for the Q&A event next weekend, lol. Of all things I will be out of the city for the weekend. :/ I will keep an eye out this week for Jake around the city!

HA! See? Poll or no poll, the beard lives on.

You go, Jake!

'Le Grand Yummy' oh that's fab! If you'd ever want this blog to have a different chapeau, it should be that. *big grin*

While we're at the topic of Twitter this post (thanks for that), may I point out that it really sucks that people don't know how to spell Jake's last name? With all this scouting the internet for Beard glimpses, there are so many spelling varieties to take into account. Darn it, Pitt and Depp fans have it so much easier... It once again shows our determination for loving this untrackable and apparently unspellable man. We don't just go for eyes or muscles or smile or hair, we are drawn to the mystery... and we'll persevere.

*end of rant/speech*

C'mon Jake! Just run into a bloody photographer, will ya!!

At least we know Sometime the beard will go.
I doubt if Jake has given up on Independent films. Wasn't "Nailed" a kind of Independent film.
Bet if something comes along he really likes he'll do it.
BBM was a "small film" and when it was being filmed they thought it wouldn't be seen by many people.
But they gave it 100%.

Great to see you Get Real! Jake obviously knows NYC extremely well and so he knows just how to blend in while retaining optimum hotness :D

Compost cookies? I'm not certain they'd go down so well over here!

That's a shame you're out of the city then but it's great you're keeping your eyes peeled the rest of the time :D

Heehee BR! Have no fear - the Time of the Beard will End - mwahaha!!!

Hey there Lady Ekster! It was a title born to be :D I'll have to try and drop it into posts... Couldn't agree more about the name and Twitter - Brad Pitt fans can have no idea!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi KC - posting at the same time :D I do think that Jake will always do a movie that appeals to him whatever its size, but after Nailed he may think twice about some projects. It doesn't matter how good a film is if noone sees it. But I can definitely see Jake making small movies he believes in, possibly being involved in them in other ways. I think the fact that he wanted to work with Duncan Jones is very telling.

Get Real said...

LOL, WDW compost cookies are amazingly delicious and I think you would love them across the pond! And I should have said desserts, not deserts, lol.

where are all the camera phones out there? Or is everyone concerned that they won't be able to get Jake and the beard in a picture together? (eyeroll)

come on people, just one pic of lumberjack Jake :D

I have to hope that the he'll be saying a fond farewell to that beard before he goes to that interview.

I wonder, do DVD sales count when a studio decides if a movie will have a sequel? or is POP going to be a one shot deal?

Blimey Get Real! They look extraordinary :D Thanks for the link - very nice.

Hi Sweetpea - maybe the beard is so big it's difficult to fit it in a photo :D

LOL. It's really getting close to royalty status, isn't it? A couple of days ago it was 'Death to the Beard!' somewhere in the comments, we're having a Beardgate with a poll, and now face fuzz even has its own era. Wow. Beard better not read this, it might get a life of its own and force Jake to take it with him wherever he goes, pretty much like the PoP hair. ;-)

Sweet dreams! (or, of course: Good morning! :-))

People in New York might be assuming that if Jake is wearing a beard, then he doesn't want to be photographed. (It's like walking into a business office wearing Bermuda shorts and a T-shirt, singalling that you don't happen to be working at the moment). Or, there may be people who don't think he's worth photographing if he isn't clean-shaven. Or a combination. Jake has not weighed in with his take.

You may be right about PoP's profitability, WDW. I don't remember how much the production and advertizing costs were, nor how much of each ticket sold goes to the studio. The DVD sales should be quite good, because this is a crowd-pleasing movie with a number of well-known actors that appeal to different audiences. Also, if Gemma Arterton and Molinaro go on to become superstars, their new fans are going to go *back* to films like this to see their whole bodies of work. That will also happen if sequels are made.

I think it's too soon to write off the possibility of sequels for PoP. It's too soon to write off the possibility of Oscar nominations for PoP and/or LAOD. We haven't even *seen* LAOD yet.

Hi WDW and y'all,

Ah, Jake at a foodie fest. Delectable! I just wish he'd open up his own resto already...
October is always "Food month" in Sydney. And this Friday the Sydney International Food Festival will kick off. Hope to catch some of the many activities. It's always a such a treat. Here's the link: http://www.siff.com.au/

Reflecting on PoP - Not to point any blame for PoP not doing as well at the box office as expected (water under the bridge, right). Just some of my personal impressions and criticisms: wrong focus at initial PR (another game adaptation), unfortunate timing of release, questionable poster designs ("MAY 28" anyone?), underwhelming trailers and... an itsy bitsy touch of over-directing by Newell. Sorry... It just didn't quite "flow" for me. I found the pace at times too fast and then too slow. Too many unnatural micro-pauses and breathy voices... But definitely lots of stunning visuals, with incredible attention to detail in sets and costumes. Obviously not my favourite JG movie to date. Les goûts et les couleurs... ;-) (Nonetheless, prepares herself for a good ol' spankin'.)

And, last but not least.
Red beard, hmm? ;-)
Historic, dramatic musical in the works maybe?

Good morning everyone! I have the day off and so I'm being unspeakably lazy :) I also blame it on watching Top Gun far too late into the night...

Morning Lady Ekster! OMG the Beard has an era, its own epoch that we shall talk of in days to come while sitting around a fire, passing mead between us and singing songs of times past :DDD Don't set me off...

Hi Paul! Maybe instead of Jake saying he doesn't want to be photographed because he's eating or with a friend, he now says 'Would you mind not photographing me, I have a beard?'

That's a good point about Gemma. Her star has certainly taken off now andI would have thought she and Jake are a combination studios may want to see more of. I loved their chemistry in PoP :D

Hey Lemniscate - hope you had a good weekend! OMG Jake's going to be in The Tudors: The Musical!!

It's interesting about the PoP campaign as I do agree that the focus of the initial marketing was very videogame biased. I don't see this as much as I love the game. But I particularly agree about the trailers - they were fun for us but something sharper would have been good. And yep for the poster - even Jake didn't like that! But I adore the film and I'm just glad I have it to watch over and over - Jake looking like that :) I'm so shallow...

The Sydney Food Festival sounds incredible - I love that kind of thing so much - and I imagine that with all the diverse cuisines of Australia it'll be a goodie.

Have a good day everyone - even though it's Monday - ugh :(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

PS - loving the results of the poll - The Don't Shave It Off brigade are increasing in numbers!

its own epoch that we shall talk of in days to come while sitting around a fire, passing mead between us and singing songs of times past :DDD
If that is gonna be the distant future then boy are we in for a lot of fun. :-D "Do you remember when we ranted about his mysterious red beard way back in 2010? And how years later that was nothing compared to the face fuzz he had in that neanderthal movie?"
Brrr... ;-)

By the way, fuelling the Box Office discussion some more, I found this old quote from Jake. No idea where it's from but I think it's quite appropriate ;-): "The truth is most of the films that make a lot of money no-one remembers, and I'm not interested in making films that no-one remembers."

Karen said...

Dont shave Jake - save your face for me, me, meeeeeeeeeeeeee! (Sorry don't know what came over me then)

It makes me think that the continuing beard growth must mean he has no lady friend at the moment - beards do get in the way of kissing, but I would put up with it for a kiss from Jake, so perhaps I am wrong there then!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Lady Ekster! Yes, we could look back on these days as the days of the short beard!! *shudders* That's a good quote, I seem to recall it was from the days of DDarko - Here's the relevant post

Hi Karen! Noooo, not a Beardie! I know what you mean about the beards although as Mr WDW has a beard I couldn't possibly comment :DD
