Jake Gyllenhaal and Salma Hayek at the LACMA Art and Film Gala and an attachment to Southpaw

Quite a bit of news this week. Firstly, Jake Gyllenhaal attended Saturday's LACMA Art and Film Gala in LA which celebrated the work of two masters - Martin Scorsese and David Hockney. Thanks very much to IHJ for the photo.

The movie news is that Jake has been attached to Southpaw, a boxing drama to be directed by Training Day's Anthony Fuqua. The Wrap tells us:

'If the deal gets signed, Gyllenhaal will play a left-handed prizefighter who wins a title but suffers a tragedy soon after and must put his life back together to earn the respect of his young daughter. While the film is set against the backdrop of the boxing ring, Fuqua previously told the Los Angeles Times that “the heart of the movie is about a man learning to be a father.”... “Southpaw” is expected to start production next year.'

Any thoughts? I enjoy watching boxing movies - including those about ex-boxers having to put their lives back together - almost as much as I enjoy Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve. I'll be interested to see what happens to this.

Morning! Lovely to see Jake and Salma together! Less lovely to think about Jake in a film like Southpaw. So what do you think?

Have a good Bonfire Night!

Has Jake ever been in a movie with Salma Hayek? It was Selma Blair in Highway with Jake and Jared Leto. Am I confused about something?

As for the Southpaw movie, I think I will definitely like it more if the emphasis is not on boxing. Also, if Jake is playing an athletic character, he should look quite different from the gaunt, sickly Lou of Nightcrawler. That's a nice thought. If Jake chooses to do the Southpaw movie, I trust that the story will be great regardless of the setting.

Hi Susan and a mega oops from me! I am ALWAYS muddling those two up. Always! I've amended the post. Thanks so much for pointing it out! *runs off and hangs head in shame*

As for Southpaw I agree with Susan: If Jake chooses to do this movie it will be great. I really don't like boxing but I guess the story won't be focusing on this part mostly (at least I hope so).
Have a nice evening everyone.

Kate, do you know if there's any more news on the release of 'Enemy' yet, please? Really looking forward to that!

I'd like it if Jake would do a sports movie - even if it's boxing!

I'm a little late here but just haven't had much time to be on line lately. I am interested in Southpaw but (like many other comments I've read here and on line) it's more to see him in a role that involves family and him playing a father - I think he will excel at that! The only good part about seeing him in a boxing ring is he will be in silk shorts and NO shirt - I'm sorry to digress but there's no way he is not going to look good wearing what boxers wear - LOL!! I'm so used to having to hide my eyes while watching Jake Gyllenhaal movies that I'm sure I'll just hide my eyes once again during the violent parts. Sigh. I guess we'll wait and see what happens.

In other movie news it was interesting to see that Nailed got a movie rating (are they really still planning to release this thing)?! Of course I'd love to see it but feel like we can't believe a thing we hear about this movie. Another "we'll see" I guess until it actually gets released!

All I've heard about Enemy is a 2014 release but no further details - I am dying to see this movie again and having more people see it so I can hear everyone's thoughts. It's so freaking confusing one really needs to see it at least twice (maybe more) to get it (and still might not get it)! But I can't stress enough how amazing it is to watch Jake play these two parts - so much screen time - such a great job he did!

You wished me luck with my Prisoners video catch-up, Kate, in an older comment and I must say I have been doing just that! I have thoroughly been enjoying so many great interviews from September (a slow process but an enjoyable one). Maybe this is the better way to do it - instead of watching, looking, reading everything rapid fire as it comes in during movie promo time it might be better to do it slowly weeks/months later (although it's hard to wait as we all get so excited when his movies are released)! I so enjoyed the THR roundtable video now that I finally got to see it and can only hope Jake and Jared will find themselves working on the same project again one day.

Well I've rambled enough...nice to catch up here. Happy Friday all!
