Jake Gyllenhaal in Tribeca, some goodies from the icecap and a trip down memory lane...

Jake Gyllenhaal is continuing to do his best to be seen by 7 out of every 10 people who inhabit the city of New York City. He is achieving this by drinking an awful lot of coffee, riding around on lots of bicycles and grabbing every train in sight. You may see an example of one of these activities here. One person was lucky enough to see him and described him as 'tall' (further contribution to the height debate), 'a cutie' and 'scruffy'. One can take that as further evidence that the Face Pet is making itself at home. Jake has been seen over the last day or two in Tribeca in particular. [See below for details but this photo is not from Tribeca... or anywhere near it.]

There is a full account here of Jake's appearance at a jewellery show, along with the lead of Vampire Weekend (a band, of course, that likes Jake just as he likes them if their videos are anything to go by). It sounds like Jake may have been exercising his flirting muscles while ogling at very expensive gems. Further examples may have been noted at Sting's bash.

Meanwhile, one other girl spotted Jake last week and had this to say: 'I just remembered that I saw Jake Gyllenhaal today  in Union Square, but then I saw a really awesome dog so forgot all about it.' Thanks to Sasha for spotting that one! Gotta wonder what the dog looked like...

Jake Gyllenhaal's Handy Tips for Catastrophic Climatic Shift Survival - an Earth Day Gift

It might be sunny and warm out there, but looks can be deceptive - one never knows what awaits around the corner or, indeed, the day after tomorrow. It's Earth Day and that means we have to think about the issues facing ourselves and our planet and also how we must act if the weather takes a little turn for the worse. Fortunately, we're in good hands because Jake Gyllenhaal has first hand experience (kind of) of freakish weather conditions and has even taken on an Ice Age (sort of) and lived to tell the tale and walk the red carpet. Jake Gyllenhaal's Handy Tips for Catastrophic Climatic Shift Survival is my contribution to Earth Day 2009. Let's hope we make it to Earth Day 2010 (insert suitably foreboding musical anthem).


1. Sensible footwear. Don't even think about tackling an Ice Age if you've not got the correct clobber on your feet. The upside is that the population of polar bears will increase exponentially with the ice mass, meaning more boots. The downside of this is that we might get eaten. But, as Jake has never said, there's no risk not worth taking for a good pair of boots.


2. Layers. Once your feet are covered, and only then, it's time to think about the rest of you.


A jacket that is sponsored by The Weather Channel has been scientifically tested and found to be the most effective protection against a body-piercing gust of Ice Age wind. Even better if you can pair it up with a Discovery Channel shirt and bicycle.


3. Accessorise, acessorise, accessorise.... Just because it's an Ice Age, that doesn't mean standards should slip. Scarves, mittens, hats, snoods, leg warmers, snow shoes, whether these are home made, shop bought or simply nicked from a library's cloakroom, try and mix functionality with style. If you're going to use the seat of a chair to make snow shoes, don't necessarily pick the cheapest chairs - you're worth more than that.



4. Be prepared for the unexpected. It's entirely possible that you may be expected to sit on a giant ice cube even when it's 80 degrees outside.


5. You can never have enough books. Especially big books with thick pages and extremely slow burning covers.


6. What to do when you come across an Ice Age beast. There are several options open to you - a) avoid Russian ships stranded in the streets of NYC b) run fast c) thump it on the head with a torch d) get someone else to thump it on the head with a torch e) run fast. But an extra tip - check the animal is real first...


7. Conserve body heat. Be warned - although Jake was informed that the best way to conserve his body heat was to take his clothes off and hug, this was actually a cunning plan. And it worked


8. Always carry an umbrella.


9. Head south.

Jake helps raise $400,000 dollars for the LA Conservation Corps (16 April), and Earth Day Goodies

Yesterday lunchtime (16 April), Jake Gyllenhaal was back at the LA Historic State Park for another event by the Los Angeles Conservation Corps. This time, without the crutches, Jake was a presenter at a luncheon, which not only celebrated the Corps' 23rd anniversary but also raised $400,000 to enable the Corps to continue its work of helping the young of the city by inspiring them to protect and enhance their natural environment. For instance, 'The Corps is the main source for trees in the LA area.'


The fact that this is the second Corps event in 13 months that Jake is known to have been associated with - on top of his recent efforts to promote the work of Global Green in February this year - indicates that Jake has a firm commitment to raising the profile of environmental schemes which educate and enlist the young to keep cities green and make them greener. Especially his own home city.



All of which has prompted Glamour Magazine to put a poll up today: 'Does Jake persuade you do to more for the environment?' Interestingly, the results of the poll don't seem to ever change but remain firmly on the fence...


And this is a reminder that 22 April is Earth Day! And if it's Earth Day and you're a celebrity with green credentials (and green fingers in Jake's case), that means you get lots of biodegradable loot.
