Jake Gyllenhaal in Eden

While Jake was staying at that most beautiful and exclusve of hotels, the Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc in Antibes, he was photographed by Denis Rouvre for Télérama magazine as one of the faces of the Cannes Film Festival 2007. I know not everyone likes these photographs, but I hope I am not alone in finding them strange and beautiful.

Jake is almost always photographed in urban landscapes (by paparazzi) or indoors (for photoshoots). Here Jake almost seems out of place, maybe a little uneasy and self-conscious, as if he feels out of context. This feeling gives these photographs a certain edge in my eyes and makes me look at Jake in a slightly different way - surely the goal of a good photographer.

We've heard so much about the Hotel du Cap during the whole Cannes adventure that I thought I'd introduce you to its website - which, for me, rather disconcertingly for a hotel beside the sea, played the theme tune for Titanic.

Photographs from IHJ.

Until now I haven't had the time to really study and appreciate these unusual photographs. Yes, my first instcinct when I briefly glanced at them was not liking the setting. Jake does, as you say WDW, look a bit uneasy and out of place. He's definitely out of his normal surroundings. Perhaps that was the goal of this photographer. To show people with pictures that Jake is an actor who can't be compartmentalized. The audience should never get used to seeing him one way because the very next chance he gets he is going to step outside of the box!

Hey Dani!

I think it's no bad thing for Jake to be photographed as we don't expect him. I loved the GQ photoshoot but it didn't challenge and it was all about a familiar, albeit more mature, image. These photos are different and,a s you say, we shouldn't get used to seeing Jake in the same way. We should allow him to surprise us!

Thanks for commenting, Dani!

I like these pics too; they're different and when you first see them, it does take some getting used to. They're not what you'd expect, someone dressed in suit in waist-high vegetation, it's a dramatic contrast. It's like he's on a primitive island - civilized man out of his element, but where he belongs, or something. The natural, green setting is beautiful and restful, and his surfing photos in Hawaii were too. We're used to seeing him in Hollywood-type photos. I guess more pics of Jake in natural settings are needed! :) I love what he's wearing in these and the other Cannes photos, the grey polo and suit. Classy!

Hi Marina!

Love this: They're not what you'd expect, someone dressed in suit in waist-high vegetation, it's a dramatic contrast. It's like he's on a primitive island - civilized man out of his element, but where he belongs, or something.

Such a vivid image - Jake as a civilised man on a primitive island. A classical and Shakespearean idea.

I love the surfing photos too and I like the idea of seeing Jake in more un-Hollywood settings.

For some reason, I'm reminded of Jake filming Brokeback Mountain out there in that incredible vast landscape.

Oh yes, Jake's definitely classy!

Thanks for commenting, marina!

I agree with Marina. I think it's the suit, the classy man-about-town style, that looks incongruous against the lush vegetation. Have to say though, I wouldn't mind finding something like this amongst the shrubbery in my garden. ;)

I like to see pics of Jake in different settings. I'm not sure these quite work for me though.

Hi Ruby!

To find Jake at the bottom of your garden.... If only I had a shrub, let alone an entire garden :D

This reminds me of that horrible interview from yesterday, in which Jake described the 'bad' side of gardens - worms and disgusting insects. Sounds like I'm not the only one who's not much of a gardener ;D

Oh My! Such a YouTube video clip (#4) . . . I think I groaned audibly! Sorry, can I say that? ;)

Hi Anon, yep you can say that :D

Wouldn't mind knowing what YouTube clip you've been watching! ;)

It's the last one, #3, not #4 as I said above. See what he does to me? :)

Mmmm, I can smell whatever the vegetation is called :)

WDW, I felt the same about the Titanic theme. No company with even a tenuous connection to travel should ever use the Titanic theme.

I've been on vacation and out of touch recently and I didn't realize how much I missed this place until I came back. WDW -- you are simply fantastic! Love your summary of those interviews. (That one interviewer should be fired, at the very least!)

I love these photos of Jake -- except that we can't see those marvelous long legs of his! :-( To me, he "fits in" anywhere AND is always surprising. How one human being can be so beautiful as well as bright and interesting is beyond me -- especially one so young.

Thanks again WDW!!!

Beckela - welcome back!

You sure know how to make a girl blush ;) I'm glad you've enjoyed catching up here.

I like how you say that Jake fits everywhere but is also always surprising. So true. It's just like sometimes you feel like you get a glimpse into his character and then he reveals himself to be as big a mystery as ever, if not more so.

Hey Anouska! Are you sure that's the vegetation you're sniffing?
