It is possible that Jake Gyllenhaal will be making his Broadway debut this fall - am I the only one jumping up and down? According to an article published today in the New York Post, Jake is due to make a decision this week whether he wishes to star in the political play Farragut North, written by Beau Willimon and to be produced by Jeffrey Richards. Richards is the producer of Spring Awakening, which - you will all recall - is the musical Jake referred to during his MTV TRL appearance earlier this year.
Apparently, Jake took part in a private reading last week. The part is that of 'a young, idealistic communications director who works for an inspiring, though unorthodox, presidential candidate. During the campaign, his career is done in by more seasoned politicos who thrive on partisan politics, dirty tricks and back-stabbing.' The play is loosely based on Howard Dean's 2004 presidential campaign.
The New York Post's 'spy' said of the secret reading: [Jake] "was handsome and charming, very compelling in the role". Jeffrey Richards is 'extremely agitated' and won't comment for fear of the whole thing collapsing.
Spring Awakening, of course, won Best Musical at the Tony's at the weekend.

YESSSSS! I, too, am jumping up and down and running in circles screaming my head off! I DO hope this play happens. If it opens this fall for a short run, I will miss it altogether, unfortunately. BUT if it succeeds and Jake signs on for an extended run (like through next spring, please, please!) there is a slim chance for me. Jake belongs on the stage, IMO, and I hope this all works out. Yay, Jake!

This has made me sit up and seriously think of visiting New York in the fall. Now we have to mobilize our team -- WDW, Beckela, Dani all of you get ready. For this fan this is reason enough to travel all the way from India. Beckela you'll find yourself travelling too. Jake you sure have that power!!
Incognita!! Well, seeing Jake onstage AND meeting you in person? As well as WDW, Dani, et al? That is certainly enough incentive for me to stop eating, driving, whatever, to save pennies for a fall trip to NYC!

Hi everyone - it all seems to incredible to be true right now. I feel afraid to talk about it in case something breaks. I can just imagine how Jeffrey Richards must feel! This must be the 'delicate stage'.
Oh my this is great news to hear indeed!! Also, by the sound of this play, it is definately something Jake would be interested in, him being so politically aware and all. It so happens, just late last evening, I noticed a very small blurb on the Towleroad website saying that there were rumors that Jake is looking for a proper theater gig in NYC.....So, I gather we will hear by next week, if this will actually happen or not!
How great it would be that some of you here would get to see Mr. Gyllenhaal's play in NY.

It would be amazing to see Jake “live”, and the material seems to be right up his street…off to hatch a plot to obtain backstage passes!
This play sounds right up his alley. I'm thrilled for Jake, he clearly wants to continue to do theater, and I don't doubt this is good material if he commits to it. He has a pretty impressive track record when it comes to judging scripts, screenplays, etc. I also love that prominent B'way producers are eager to work with him too.... more testament to his immense appeal and talent.
But at the same time, I'll be a little sorry to see him do this play, only because it will delay his next potential movie project. Totally selfish, I know! But since I cannot see him on stage, I'm completely reliant on movies to get my Jake fix. I worry that 2008 could end up being a Jake movie drought year..... he seems to like having a lot of down time between projects. Hope I'm worrying about nothing.....

And you're so right, Birdie - it's great that directors of both stage and screen want to win Jake to their projects. What a lot of choices Jake must face!
