While we wait for Jake Gyllenhaal to unpack his bags from his recent trip to North Idaho, San Francisco, New York or southern England, and while we ruminate on whether it was for business or pleasure and resign ourselves to never knowing, I thought I'd take a look to see where Maggie is these days. Filming on The Dark Knight is continuing in Chicago, although it has now moved to a garage location for the Bat Cave. This means that not only can the traffic drive around Chicago in relative ease for a few days, but that, apparently, Maggie can take a break. She was spotted on Saturday in New York City wearing Ramona in a very fashionable black moby which, I have to admit, I had never heard of before today.
What's more unexpected is that filming in the Bat Cave doesn't seem to even require Batman or the Joker either. Both - in other words Christian Bale and Heath Ledger - were in NYC as well and, not only that, they had a meal out together, mainly consisting of greens. You can take down the Reserved sign now, Heath.

What a great picture of Maggie and Ramona - Ramona just gets more adorable all the time! And Heath - he's gorgeous, Christian too. :)
Hi Marina - I couldn't resist this picture. Ramona has such great genes :D Always good to see Heath.
Thanks for the great pics of Maggie with baby Ramona and the update on BATMAN. I think Christian Bale is a great Batman in a different way than my original favorite Michael Keaton! I guess I will always feel protective of the Boys from Brokeback and I want Heath to have continued success just like we all want for our guy Jake!
Hey Dani - Thanks for that - I love to post pictures of Maggie. I have the same feelings as you about Heath and I hope this role works out for him.
Maggie/Ramona/Peter photos are such a treat, so thanks WDW for this cute one. I so love Ramona's hat! Based on the few pics I have seen of her, Ramona seems to resemble both her lovely parents.
And even though I always love seeing Heath, this picture with Christian made me a little sad.... it reminded me that we haven't seen Heath and Jake together in over a year. It's increasingly hard for me to believe that they really are good friends. (And I do not mean in a slashy way....)
Hi Birdie. I know what you mean about feeling sad at seeing Heath with Christian. I had the same reaction when I first saw the picture. Even though I believe Jake and Heath are still friends and will forever be linked throughout Hollywood history. It may be just because of that that we do not see or hear of them spending much time together. It doesn't change their personal friendship, but career wise they are determined to go forward - separately!
You are so fast with posting during the last days. I just wanted to post some thoughts on “Jarhead” and now I see two new entries.
Ramona is such a cute baby. I saw some new pictures from yesterday together with Peter - they look and behave normal, nothing glamorous or fake around them.
The expectations for “The Joker” are high and I am sure Heath will do an excellent job. From what I heard Maggies role is a smaller one, but it is a chance for her going a bit more “mainstream” in a way that more people will be able to enjoy her acting. Maggie is unique – like her brother…
I got to know Jake (and Heath) because of BBM – a film that meant so much more then only “two hours entertainment” for the most of us. And many fans want to believe that Jake and Heath feel the same bond that we have with Jack and Ennis. Personally I don´t believe that they are very close friends but I am sure that they really respect each other. They had an exciting time after BBM was released – and obviously none of the people involved in the film had expected this - but they have both moved on – in their private lifes and careerwise.
Jake had probably a hard time during shoooting BBM – Kirsten and he ended their relationship and I can imagine it was not easy for him and a short time after BBM shootings have ended he had to go to New Mexico for “Jarhead”. He struggled with many emotions during that time – we all know the “tooth-story” with B. Geraghty, mentioned in the Jarhead thread- and Peter also commented on Jakes behaviour during an interview - he and Jake didn´t talk to each other for some weeks –looks like Jake was a bit of a pain in the a** during those months.
It is fascinating to watch Jakes interviews before and after that experinece – he had not lost his boyish charme and his “goofyness” but he had become grown up man.
Carla, I think you make some good points. I think that by the time all the commotion surrounding BBM started, one and a half years after the movie had been finished, Jake and Heath had moved away from their characters in that movie. Jake had done Jarhead and had actually started filming Zodiac a couple of days after BBM had been shown at the Venice Film Festival.
Both commented in interviews at the time that it had taken them months to get away from the sadness making this movie had left them with. And to quote Jake from an interview in Cannes, when asked to comment on the Brokeback Mountain phenomenon, he said: "Now that time has passed, I try to look back on that period. 'Joy' is the word to describe it. But after a while you have to let go of the past and focus on something new. However, a big success like Brokeback Mountain can also be very confining. It's like it has become a part of you and you can't let it go."
BBM fans need to let go of Jack and Ennis, but looking at the popularity of BBM fanfiction I guess for some that is very hard to do.
Jake and Heath are not Jack and Ennis; they are Jake and Heath. Two actors and two individuals.
Hi Birdie and Dani
Heath and Jake will be forever linked for Ennis and Jack, that's for sure. I'm sure they grew incredibly close during the filming and then again through all the madnes that followed it. I'm sure they're still friends (I would have thought Maggie has been passing messages during the Batman filming!) but I tend to think they've both moved on. Like everyone else, I'd love to see a picture of Jake and Heath together. Actually, that's quite an understatement!
Hi Carla
Thanks for that interesting comment - much to think about there.
I saw the new pictures of Maggie and Peter. I always love to see Maggie but she clearly doesn't look very happy with the photogapher in this instance. I totally agree with you about how they look like a 'normal' family - whatever one of those is.
I also completely agree with your assessment of Jake and Heath's relationship. I think the same. It's inevitable that the whole Brokeback experience would have brought them so close, for mutual support if nothing else. But both have clearly moved on, although I'm sure that when and if they bump into each other there's one of those famous Gyllenhugs on offer.
Brokeback, and Jarhead, were clearly an important part of Jake's growing process, as an actor and as a man. The self-analysis that he would have entered into for both roles has to have changed Jake's life and his view of the world and the people in it.
Hi Penny Lane
Thanks for commenting. It's very interesting to me that you say that BBM fans should let Jack and Ennis go. I know that's hard for me as I only have to see a clip of the film to be immersed not only in the film but also in the feelings I experienced at the time. However, I know I have moved on to some extent - hence my obsession with Zodiac and I'm sure I'll feel the same way about Rendition.
I thought at the time I had fallen for Jack and now I realise that it was Jake and his force on screen, and so to some extent that is probably moving on, or at least realising that there is more to Jake than Jack. I completely understand why Jake would wish to move on from that time.
I didn't realise that filming of Zodiac began so soon after Venice. That must have been quoite a jolt to the system to say the least.
Not that I have time to write because I am suppose to be on my way to work, but I have to say a few more things. First, I appreciate what everyone has to say because it can always make me look at something in a different way. I was never one of those people who thought Jake and Heath would and should remain , if they ever were, best friends forever. I see a mutual respect for one another but understand the desire to separate themselves from such an overwhelming experience as the whole Brokeback phenomena.
I can still honestly say no movie will probably ever affect me again on an emotional level as BBM. That doesn't mean that I have not appreciated other good movies. I love that Jake is not a one note actor and there are many other gifts from his talent. I look forward to seeing everything that he will do. Yes, he is more than Jack Twist. And, yes, it is JAKE that I am fascinated with because he can move from character to character without carrying a trace of the last role into the next. I know I will never let go of BBM as my favorite but I am eagerly awaiting something else from him that will sweep me off my feet and leave me feeling good and not depressed forever like BBM. And I have to stick up for fanfiction. For some it may look like hanging on and refusing to move forward, but I think it serves it's purpose in relieving the pain. And we have to remember that everyone is not affected in the same way about a movie!
Loving the discussion here. This site is really the best and thiank you, WDW for keeping the topics so interesting and relevant to Jake and us. :)
Btw, just a correction, Jake started filming for "Zodiac" in either late September/early October. BBM was first at Venice and then they all went to Toronto the first two weeks of September. Then Jake was in NYC with Maggie and Peter and then started filming. I just remember all of this because that is when I became obsessed and enthralled with Jake and BBM. I started going to IHJ and I remember all the pap and set pics at that time.
^^ thank you
Dani - what a comment! You highlight with such eloquence what BBM can mean and why it is more than just a film. I know how much pain it caused me and how it changed my entire life. Like you, I found and I find comfort in BBM fanfiction and I owe some of those authors more than I can say.
Something will come along from Jake, Dani, and it will make you feel good.
Thanks so much for your comment - I hope it didn't make you late for work :D
Hi Get Real
Thanks so much for that - I'm glad you're enjoying the site and the discussions we can have here. 'Jake and us' is what it's all about.
And thanks for all those details about the filming schedule. What a busy time, it seems like such a long time ago now.
Hi all -
This is a great discussion. I will always hold Ennis and Jack in a special place in my heart. It was that kind of a film. While most of me has moved on, they will always be in my heart. Very few films can move you that way. Every now and then, I'll read a great fanfic about them, listen to the soundtrack, or watch the DVD. It reminds me how much love and affection I have for Ennis and Jack, even though they are two fictional characters! It's great I think, that they will go down in history as unforgettable as any fictional characters, and relationship, can be. When we think of all the great ones, we'll think of Ennis and Jack.
But having said that, I'm also happy to see both Heath and Jake in new projects. I'm sure Brokeback meant a lot to them. Just think, Heath made Jake godfather to his daughter, that says a lot to me. There's just so much that we don't see of them, and there's really no way to tell for certain, but I really do believe they are still close friends. Like everyone, career and life may get in the way of their getting together as much as they would like to. :)
Hi Marina
I think it's very true that sometimes something happens that reminds you with a jolt what Jack and Ennis mean. I only have to see the dozey embrace and I'm in tears beccause I now have so many association with it. And, as you say, sometimes a certain piece of fanfic can bring it all back, and there are some stories (that I've read by accident) that have upset me almost as much as the film!
But for me, this has all been part a process sparked off by seeing Brokeback for the first time. It has involved a lot of inner thought about what I want and this has led to changes. It's no wonder then that we find it hard to let these two go, even if the need to see the film over and over again has lessened.
That's very true what you say about Jake and Heath - we really have no idea whether they see each other or now. They may have moved on from their roles and - in my opinion - they need each other less now, but Jake's role as godfather to Matilda is not something Heath would have given lightly - or Michelle for that matter.
Thanks for your comment, Marina.
Hey Everyone - I'm really enjoying this discussion and I hope we can continue it even as the site moves on. I do intend to revisit some of the themes that we discuss at the site because there is so much to take from them.
Thanks so much for these comments which clearly are the result of a lot of reflection. :-) So please, carry on.
Just want to say I've really enjoyed reading all the posts here- thanks to everybody for sharing your thoughts. I love hearing people's Brokeback stories. I'm sending up a little prayer of thanks to whoever invented the internet, cos without it I would've missed out on so many intelligent and insightful conversations about this amazing film. And I'd have nowhere to get my own muddled thoughts off my chest either!
Like a few of you have said, BBM will always have a special place in my heart, but I'm nowhere near as obsessed as I was some 18 months (!) ago. There are still times when it all gets a bit too much and I have to stay away from anything BBM for a while, but then I'll see something like WDW's two excellent BBM posts recently and I can go back there for a while and just focus on the good things to come out of Brokeback rather than the upsetting things.
As for Jake and Heath, it's inevitable that they will always be linked in our minds but just as we all needed to move on from Brokeback eventually,so did Jake and Heath, as Jake says in the quote Penny Lane posted.I would imagine that after such an intense experience they would probably need some space from each, and when you take into account the whole movie star lifestyle thing, it's not surprising really that their paths don't seem to cross often. But as Marina said, Jake is godfather to Heath's daughter, that says it all to me.
I would love to see a pic of them together for old time's sake. Maybe the Batman premiere if Jake goes with Maggie?
Hi Twisted Logic
There's been something rather cathartic about all this today. As you say it's 18 months or thereabouts for any of us and after all this time we're bound to feel differently, while still holding the film and jack and Ennis precious. It's good to just sit ack sometimes and just chat about what they mean to us - Jack and Ennis really are old friends now. And even though we may move on, to whatever extent, we'll always love having them to visit!
And I certainly agree with you about the benefit of the internet. I can't stand the thought of what it would have been like to have seen Brokeback and gone through all that suffering without being able to mull it over. Also, it means you know you're not alone and that others feel exactly the same way. That's always been amazing to me - discovering that other people have been through the same thing.
As for Jake and Heath, wouldn't it be incredible if they were at the Batman premiere together?
Thanks very much for your comment.
wow, I can't believe all this wonderful discussion I missed 'cause I had to spend the day at work!
Since my realtively innocent observation started the Jake & Heath friends discussion, I just want to add that I am not a fan that confuses Jack and Ennis' relationship with the 2 actors who portrayed them. I think the main reason I assumed that they had a strong personal friendship that lasted beyond the professional one was Jake being Matilda's godfather.
But I do agree with Carla..... I think they do like and respect each other, but they have moved on into their own very separate lives.
I can only echo what everyone else has noted..... this is such a wonderful site that we get to share. I truly enjoy reading everyone's thoughts and observations.
Hey Birdie - It is a pain when work gets in the way of a serious BBM discussion!
It is interesting this idea of how confused Jack and Ennis may have become with Jake and Heath. This has obviously a lot to do with the chemistry between the two actors - impossible to ignore. But it makes me think about why Jack and Ennis still mean so much to many of us - would we feel the same if they had not been played by two beautiful and charismatic actors. After all, in the original story, Jack was no oil painting. But maybe Jack and Ennis had to be beautiful on screen because that's what they saw in each other?
What d'you think?
"But maybe Jack and Ennis had to be beautiful on screen because that's what they saw in each other?
What d'you think? "
That's a wonderful notion, but I think it was more a commercial consideration. It was a hard enough 'sell' as a movie anyway. A good-looking Jack and Ennis was probably considered advantageous. And I'm not complaining.
I wouldn't expect to see pictures of J&H together very often, if at all. They are of course both very busy, and live on opposite sides of a rather sizable country. But you don't ask just any former colleague to be Godparent to your first-born. To me that suggest a life-long bond whether they spend a lot of time together or not. And we know how loyal Jake is regarding his friendships.
Yes, I like that thought very much, WDW. I thought that, especially about the character of Jack Twist. Of course, he was physically beautiful but he had a quiet strength and goodness about him that just came shining through to me. Ennis had outer bravado, but inside he felt confusion and fear. But Ennis had an honorable and noble qualities about him. How he felt about his daughters, and his work. They brought their own qualities to the relationship, as in most relationships.
I'd heard how good Heath's performance was before we saw Brokeback, and Heath was great, but not much about Jake's. I'd never seen him at all in anything, except the Jarhead trailer that was out at about the same time. I came away from that film completely stunned by Jake's performance, and couldn't imagine why I hadn't heard more about it.
I've said these things over 100 times probably, so bear with me if I'm being repetitive! :)
Hi Ruby
You're quite right - if you want a film about two sheepherders falling in love in the middle of nowhere to be a commercial success then you have to give it every chance - and Jake and Heath were perfect. But Jack Twist is so breathtaking, and I think Ang must have realised that Jake could bring a whole new dimension to Annie's Jack.
And yes, Jake seems above all else to be a good friend and to value his friendships and relationships.
Hey Marina Thanks for that wonderful tribute to Heath and Ennis: Ennis had outer bravado, but inside he felt confusion and fear. But Ennis had an honorable and noble qualities about him. I know I dwell on the beauty and emotion of some of those Jack Twist stares but the way that Ennis looked at Jack and at the world around him was so powerful and not a little upsetting to watch.
And you're not being repetitive! Some things need to be repeated :D
