Wining and dining with Jake Gyllenhaal while Maggie takes charge in Chicago

The first pictures, unofficial, have been uncovered of Maggie on the set of The Dark Knight in Chicago. In this new instalment of the Batman series, Maggie plays the role of Rachel Dawes, which was surrendered by Katie Holmes. Other castmembers include Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent, Christian Bale as Batman and, of course, Heath Ledger himself as the Joker.

Maggie is also the cover lady taking charge of the front page of July's Dazed and Confused magazine, from which she dazzles.

We've seen Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi and friends eat out so much recently that I've become not a little interested in their choice of restaurants. Last night, it was the turn of the Bombay Talkie in Chelsea, which, according to a WDW friend, has a rather sublime selection of cocktails. On Thursday lunchtime, Jake and Naomi lunched at the Morandi, which apparently serves 'casual Italian' fare that one feasts upon while squeezed into 'hobbit chairs'. I'm posting another picture from Thursday's lunch in order to satisfy the readers who have expressed such positive feelings about the cardigan.

After hearing about the cocktails of the Bombay Talkie (I wonder if Jake was tempted by the Love Story cocktail that rather imaginatively features cocoa puffs), I've been inspired to investigate that most famous of cocktails - the Aqua Velva of Zodiac fame. This is what I discovered from the Houstonist Bartender: 'The Aqua Velva is named after a brand of aftershave with a similar hue. During WWII, sailors supposedly drank the aftershave for its alcohol content. We promise this cocktail is soap-free, totally masculine, and very delicious.' And this is how you make it:

'+ 3/4 oz. vodka; + 3/4 oz. gin; + 1/4 oz. Sprite; + 1/2 oz blue curaçao; + 1/2 oz. Sprite - Shake vodka, gin, blue curaçao and Sprite with ice. Pour/strain into glass and top off with Sprite. Cocktail umbrella optional.' Rather worryingly, I have each of these ingredients, bar the sprite, to hand.

If there won´t be an announcement for a new film soon, I fear that 2008 will be a Jake-less movie year. So its good to know that one Gyllenhaal will be present. I have been to a Batman message board to read what they are saying, everything has calmed down and they are mostly discussion the plot but some of the comments towards Heath and also Maggie are unbelievable.

"I'm posting another picture from Thursday's lunch in order to satisfy the readers who have expressed such positive feelings about the cardigan" - the famous cardigan, my grandpa owned one similiar to Jakes grey one....:)

His PA seems to be really more a friend then an assistent. But I hope her presence also means business. Lets keep our fingers crossed that we get a confirmation (or denial) whether he is "doing the Broadway" very soon.

WDW, thanks for the Aqua Velva recipe. I really feel the need to try one of these. And soon. ;D

Thanks WDW - that picture of Maggie is stunning. And I love slouchy cardigan'd Jake. Though the cardigan is best slung over that shoulder and leaving the arms for us to gaze upon

WDW, thanks for the update on Maggie and BATMAN. I love it that you are including the circle of people who are important in Jake's life. Maggie looks beautiful on the magazine cover. I wish her all the success in the world. I am glad she will be appearing in a big budget blockbuster just so that more people will know her name. Then she can go back to doing whatever she chooses because, like her brother, her choices are always interesting. I am happy for Heath also. Glad you mentioned him.

And thanks for the education on the Aqua Velva! I never knew the original aftershave was imbibed because of it's alcohol. Good Grief! What people won't do.

Ah, THE gorgeous and oh-so-talented Maggie! I just love her. Such an amazing family, like no other.

I'm hoping Jake decides about the play soon and we hear about it. I want to see this man on stage, if getting a ticket is even possible!

And I'm kinda glad, actually, that Jake takes his time choosing films, etc., these days. Must be that tingly, anticipation thing going on! Perhaps he wore himself out physically and emotionally during 2004 to 2006 or so shooting a kagillion films and enduring all that went with the surprise reception of Brokeback Mountain. Had to be tough -- exhilarating, yes, but tough indeed.

Hi Carla

I know, the thought of 2008 being a year without Jake on the big screen is not a happy one. Let's hope for consolations - such as the play. Like you, I just wish we knew one way or the other. Have to be patient....

I'm hoping that the presence of Jake's good friend and colleague also suggests a work element to Jake's trip.

Mind you, look how quick Rendition has been. All movies don't have to take as long as Zodiac, so here's hoping.

Thanks for commenting :)

Hi Ruby

I'm with you on the Aqua velva - I wonder if the Sprite is optional...

I agree, Incognita that the cardi belongs on a shoulder and not on those gorgeous arms.

Hey Dani - I really love Maggie and I want to cover her as well whenever possible. This film will definitely throw her into the limelight - although I hope people are kinder than they are about Katie Holmes. I think it can be far harder for an actress in the limelight.

I'll always look for an excuse to mention Heath!

Hi Beckela - I'm certainly feeling that tingly, anticipation thing going on! It's as if we all sit on the edge of our chairs and try to be patient as Jake decides on what's best for him. Maybe he realises he has a lot of years ahead of him, he's on the right path and so can afford not to fill every year with a new film.

I'm torn in two!

Thanks for commenting everyone :D

Maggie does look gorgeous, doesn't she? I'm looking forward to seeing The Dark Knight now. And thanks for the Aqua Velva recipe, WDW. I'll have to make one to celebrate when Zodiac comes out on DVD in July. I think it's July? I'm sure Jake has a few surprises in store for us as far as upcoming movie roles, or theater. :)

Hi Marina!

I'm no fan of Batman movies but I'll definitely give this one a go. Yes, I think we should all have our Aqua Velva's ready for the end of July and the DVD release. I've been drinking Zodiac Margaritas (with Blue Caracao)recently but I reckon I might make the switch.
