Jake and Reese help keep Rendition budget down

This year Hollywood studios are producing a number of movies that tackle the serious subject of the international world of terrorism. The two that spring most readily to mind are Angelina Jolie's A Mighty Heart and, of course, Jake Gyllenhaal's Rendition. There are also to be several films on the war in Iraq. These recurring themes have given the studios a headache - how to package them to audiences and how to market them and make them distinct. A consensus is don't try to disguise the nature of the content. This is also a convenient excuse to repost my current favourite picture - I hope we soon have more.

There was an article in Variety yesterday, which discusses this subject and includes quotes from Russell Schwartz who is responsible, it seems, for marketing Rendition for New Line. Interestingly, he points out that both Jake and Reese Witherspoon reduced their fees to keep the budget of the film under $30 million. This suggests to me that both actors believed in the film they were making and had faith in its message. Schwartz also 'admits the fusillade of war movies hitting screens is a concern. The studio is still fine-tuning its strategy, but plans a mid-October bow to avoid the competish. "We wanted to get ours out sooner, rather than later," Schwartz says. "I don't envision it a platform, and I don't envision opening it on 3,000" screens.'

The Joker gets the girl

A new photo has been released for The Dark Knight and is one of the few photos we have of Heath Ledger and Maggie together - although, admittedly, neither look quite at their best!

Includes pictures from JJ and Out Now.

Hi everyone! Hope you all have a good weekend. I'm away until tomorrow lunchtime and I've thought it best to switch moderate comments back on til then - it's only temporary, some of you may know WDW had some trouble yesterday.

Happy Jakin!

Wow! A surprise post for me just when I was dozing off on a lazy Saturday afternoon! How did you know I need this?

"A consensus is don't try to disguise the nature of the content"
This is as it should be.

"Interestingly, he points out that both Jake and Reese Witherspoon reduced their fees to keep the budget of the film under $30 million. This suggests to me that both actors believed in the film they were making and had faith in its message."
This is getting me even more excited about the film. When Jake believes strongly in something it has a real motivational effect on people. I just can't wait for the interviews to start.

You have done the wise thing. Forget your troubles for a while and have a great weekend. We'll be looking forward to your return.

Thanks for leaving us with something wonderful and informative before you went on your get-away. I love to hear about actors believing in their films enough to not let money be their only objective. For this film to be made at around 30 million dollars, Reese definitely took a big cut from the super big bucks Oscar winning actors can usully ask for. And it always seems that Jake makes most of his career decisions for the love of the project and a belief that it has something worthwhile to say.

The only other movie I am highly anticipating besides Rendition and whatever Jake's next film will be is Batman. Heath is giving me chills. Can't wait!

I am so sorry to hear about the trouble. What a shame! I will never understand why some people can't just appreciate a great blog without injecting their own ugliness, thereby spoiling the ambiance of a special gathering place for those who DO appreciate a great blog. WDW, I hope this hasn't dampened your enthusiasm for this special spot in cyberspace. You obviously put your heart and soul into your work here, and I, for one, truly appreciate it.

Yet another great post and I WILL check out this music and the artists that are new to me.

Very sorry for your troubles, WDW! Hope everything gets sorted out.
Thanks for keeping us up to date on developments regarding the release of Rendition. If they don't open wide, (3,000 theatres) and I'm not surprised that they wouldn't, and they don't do a "platform" release as they did with BBM, which is a gradual thing, then I'm intrigued as to what they might have in mind. I sincerely hope they plan on opening in at least a minimum of 300 - 600 in the USA! Reese and Meryl combined should insure the film opens with reasonable access and generates good buzz, so they can add more theatres. I expect it to have a limited run, though, probably not more than three weekends. Wouldn't it be something if Jake gets a Best Actor nomination for Z and a Supporting for R! Well, then. I guess I've got it all mapped out! LOL!.

Well said, Beckela. So say we one, so say we all. You work so hard at this that I sometimes think you never sleep, WDW, since you are always there when I wake up and when I go to bed. I hope you know how much you're appreciated and how important it is to us that there are cyber places which are positive, tolerant, and insightful, as well as fun.

I can definitely say that for me, there are days when your posts and the thoughtful comments here help turn things from dark to light.

Hey WDW! Sorry to hear about the trouble you've been having:( I don't know what's been said or who by, but it seems to me some people need to heed the expression "if you don't have anything nice to say, just say nothing at all". Sure people can disagree with each other, but it's possible to do that without being rude or disrespectful and that's one of the things I love about this place and the people who post here. I for one really appreciate the great job you do here and you have my full support. Enjoy your mini-break:)
Thanks for posting that Variety article - and not just cos it's a great excuse to post that pic again, though it's a very welcome sight;) Sounds like this is a labour of love for Jake (although I'm sure he got paid enough to keep him in white t-shirts and sunglasses for a while;) and that just makes me even more keen to see it. I was a bit surprised by what the article said about Jarhead, how it should have offered a "more stinging indictment" of the Iraq war, cos I thought it did do that but hey...

Yet another reason I'm looking forward to Rendition is that according to this link I found on IHJ, Jake has a steamy sex scene in Rendition with an un-named but extremely lucky Moroccan lady
shirtless and sweaty
OMG!!! Who turned the heating on!

Hi friends - I'm back and normal service is resumed - thanks for being so kind and with me over the last 24 hours :D Using the internet with a mobile phone is an experience I don't necessarily recommend ;D

I've missed chatting with you all and now, thanks to Twisted Logic, I'm a little hot under the collar :-)

Hey guys! Welcome back WDW! I am hot all over.

I read about the steamy scene, too!!!
The words: "shirtless," "shower" and "towel" jumped off the page!!! How soon will the DVD be out and will they include this part? LOLOL!!!! I pray this is true. Isn't that awful of me???

*thud* damn it's hard to type when you have slid onto the floor. I so hope this is true. Not awful at all bobbyanna. :)

Hi Incognita! Glad to be back. Only a day, but it seemed a lot longer..

Hey Bobbyanna and Ruby - I hope someone's put you both in the recovery position... But you're not the only ones - it gave me a great excuse to post some pictures of Jake without a shirt. I'm definintely ready for a film with some Smutty Jake!! Oops, did I say that out loud? I hope tat DVD has plenty of extras.

I just realised I forgot to do my fan-girlie 'squeeee' at the TDK pic of Heath and Maggie.

Done now and I feel better for it. ;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

At the risk of having a glass of something thrown over my head, Ruby, is the Joker squeeee-worthy?? He looks a little under the weather to me...

Like the Ruby pic by the way :D

Ruby said...

Squeee-worthy for a fangirl excited by a new movie yes. It wasn't a 'I want him right here right now' squeee, like my Jake ones! :D

Glad you like the pic. Looks just like me, right? Yeah right.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks for the squeeing lesson, Ruby - I know all I know about squeeing from you and Anouska ;D Glad to hear you have a unique Jake-squee.

Actually, I thought the picture was uncanny :D

My squeeeeeeeing ops have been way limited lately, WDW :( :)

Ruby, squeeeing at that pic of Heath is a sign of true love. Or something.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Anouska - we're going to have to do some squeeeee-ing soon (but possibly not at Heath - don't tell Ruby I said that) :D

Ruby said...

(but possibly not at Heath - don't tell Ruby I said that)

err, you know I'm sitting right here, reading every word, right?

I don't care if I am alone in my Heath-as-Joker squeeing. He's gonna be amaaaaazing!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ruby - I hope you get mega squeeing possibilities when Heath and Maggie are on that Batman red carpet together next year. Surely they will, won't they?!
