Jake melts the ice

One of the subjects that always pops up from time to time is the chemistry - or otherwise - between Jake Gyllenhaal and his leading ladies. In last night's post and comments, it was mentioned that Jake and Jennifer Aniston found their love scene awkward in The Good Girl and that Jake had suggested that he was worried how it had looked on the screen. Here's what Jennifer said when she was asked if it was difficult filming the scene: "Yeah for both of us, because we’ve never done it before. Shooting the sex scene was terrifying and we were both nervous, not to mention 400 pieces of material between us [maybe I shouldn’t say that]."

It turns out that shooting The Good Girl was not a particularly pleasurable experience, with the director wanting the atmosphere as miserable on set as possible, to mirror the sadness and lack of hope in the lives of Justine and Holden. It seems Jake became very protective of Jennifer: "We definitely had our breakdown days. It was a challenge for her to play this role. We had our times when she was just like, 'I f***ing suck, I can't do this.' And I'd have my days like, 'I f***ing suck.' But she's a really hard worker and I really like her, honestly. We would get scolded by the director because we'd joke around, and he'd get pissed. He wanted a very serious set. I remember we were in bed one day, and Miguel Arteta screamed, 'Stop joking around.' And I thought, 'This is Jennifer Aniston, m*********er. You don't yell at her.'" Definitely, one of Jake's more exuberant days...

Jake and Jennifer have clearly maintained a close relationship ever since, preserving the precious and extremely photogenic chemistry, as was evident at the GLAAD Awards earlier this year. How I love these pictures.

I'll come back to Jennifer another time, but I want to mention another of Jake's leading ladies who is one of my favourites - Emmy Rossum from The Day After Tomorrow. This is what she said when asked what it was like working with Jake: "Fantastic! He’s a fantastic guy. He’s very intelligent. It was funny because I was kind of like the only girl on the set. There was Mark Gordon, our producer, Roland, Jake, Dennis and me. So, he’s like my big brother, the big brother I never had. So it was really nice. We also work in kind of a similar way. We both put a lot of emphasis on preparation but then we get there and we kind of let it rip and are intuitive in a lot of ways within the bounds of the character and the arc. I think we work really well together..."

Not unexpectedly, we hear that Jake is "quite goofy in reality. I think we were so cold and wet and shivering most of the time that nobody had enough energy to pull pranks after running through that take 500 times in one day with Roland going do it again. But he’s very much positive. He has a lot of positive energy." So did Emmy feel that there was chemistry between herself and Jake? "It had to be. There was no choice for me. It was gonna be there. It also wasn’t difficult. He’s terribly attractive. So it wasn’t like the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my whole life but, at the same time, I think the heat had to be there. Somebody had to melt the ice! [Laughter]."

But, of course, the chemistry isn't always with a leading lady and, to many, that chemistry reached its most potent and intoxicating with Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain. Jake and Heath knew of each other because of their experience of auditioning and competing for the role of Christian in Moulin Rouge: "We knew each other before we filmed this movie. We had both been on an extensive, really intense, audition process for Moulin Rouge with Baz Luhrmann. There was me and Heath and Ewan [McGregor] as the last three for that role. I feel like I was the puppy of all the three of them. I don't know what I was doing in there, but I was just amazed to be in there when we were auditioning. Heath and I started to know each other just by name, because I never saw his face—Baz never let us see each other. We'd be ushered into a room and locked in, and the other would go out and audition with someone and then ushered back in, so I heard him by name for a long time. When we were both not cast we become friends out of jealousy. From there we knew each other on and off, different times we'd see each other." What a strange procedure! Auditioning amid locked rooms and secret faces.

It's interesting to hear Jake talk about how he relates himself to Jack: "There is a strength in nature, holding onto a goal, whatever that might be. To me [it] is something I really relate to. Wanting things to progress, [no matter what] the response, definitely is something that I related to in Jack Twist. I fell into always pushing Ennis to say how he felt, or to communicate something, even if it's imperfect. I never really knew at the time that was [what I was doing]. When I read the script for the first time, I thought, “Oh Ang will probably want me to play the Ennis part,” because I've played much more isolated characters before. That's a very obvious, very actorly way of thinking about it, because actually Heath and I as people are really more the characters that we play." Jake even compared his own childhood to that of Jack: "Yeah, it is complicated, and it is okay to be complicated. So, I had a very interesting childhood in a lot of ways, and I brought that with me, and somehow Jack and I parallel somewhere." [The picture below shows Jake with Brokeback's leading lady Annie Proulx.]

And it's not a surprise to hear that, as with The Good Girl, the intimacy of the love scenes in Brokeback wasn't easy for Jake. "And I was like, “Wow, am I really going to be able to be the one who brings [Heath] into this, and comforts him somehow?” I'm just as skeptical of it also, so how am I going to emotionally go there? Like their scene in the tent where I'm like, “Come in here.” I know what I'm doing, but I have no idea what I'm doing with this, you know what I mean? I'm the one who initiates these sexual encounters—which to me was totally foreign. It's like, “How do you do this? Does it look right?” And, yeah, I consider it a real movement towards something to go to a place where you're like, “Oh, this is about intimacy between two people.” You're going to have to put [the other stuff] out of your mind..." [This picture shows Jake greeting Brokeback composer Gustavo Santaolalla.]

This interview also made me chuckle on account of the interviewer's concern for any damage that Jake might have caused to the Gyllenjewels during the bullriding scenes, to which Jake replied: "Who are you writing for? Thank you for the empathy. No, I didn't really hurt anything, at least not right now that I know of, maybe there's long term damage."

Off topic and on stage with Rufus

I'm sure you might recall that way back in June, Jake got up on stage and 'sang/shouted/hammed' (delete as appropriate) his way through the closing lines of Rufus Wainwright's Between My Legs in New York City. When I saw Rufus with Ruby we were rather disappointed that this part of the song was completle missing, nobody got on stage, not even a Big Brother evictee. But all this is to be put to rights on the next stage of Rufus' world tour. You can compete to be Jake - well, go on stage and ham your heart out. All you have to do is visit the Rufus Wainwright Tour Auditions on YouTube and post your rendition (I must try and work that word into every post from now on...). Unfortunately, you have to have tickets already.

Well, I certainly would never have known from watching the love scenes in The Good Girl that there were multi-takes and any awkwardness - I thought they were great. Loved the pics with Annie Proulx and Gustavo Santaolalla too. The last picture, from LA premiere, are some of his most handsome I think. Thanks, WDW! And WDW? I want to say as well that you've created such a great atmosphere here, we're not gonna let anyone spoil it! ;)

Hi Marina - good to hear from you! I agree, I saw no sign of awkwardness so it just shows how gifted Jake and Jen were that they didn't convey their discomfort to us. Aren't those absolutely wonderful pictures? And it makes me wonder how Annie felt meeting Jake - did he fulfil her idea of Jack I wonder as he's very different physically in the original story. And thanks for that :D

Well, WDW, you know I am going to zero in straight away to anything that has to do with Brokeback Mountain, but I will first say that I love, love, love Jennifer Aniston. I was a fan of hers from Friends long before I was of Jake. I can't say The Good Girl was one of my favorite films because of the depressing nature, but it certainly was a good one. Jake and Jen acted well together and I am so thrilled when I get to see them together at an awards show. For me, that is when their chemistry is off the charts.

In TDAT I was still sort of thinking of Jake as a boy. Definitely a cute boy. Emmy Rossum is darling and they looked sweet together. You Didn't mention Ellen Pompeo in Moonlight Mile, but I loved her too. I guess I am partial to Jake with older women. And even though Susan Sarandon was the mother of the poor dead girlfriend, Susan looked hot with Jake.

And then there is Heath! They are still IT for me. Where as I look forward to seeing Jake in many more romantic situations, I really don't think anyone will come close to the spontaneous combustion that smoked and then burst into brilliant flames betwen Jake and Heath. Just my opinion.

And to answer the question you posed about whether Jake looked like the Jack from Annie's original story. Not even remotely! I am sure Annie had very good reasons for describing her boys the way she did. But if Ang had looked for actors that resembled them, I wouldn't be still talking about the movie all these months later. It probably still would have been a good film, just not life altering for me. I think Jake and Heath physically represented the beauty that OS Jack and Ennis saw in each other!

Hy Dani - oh, yes, I love Jennifer too and have done for so many years. She looks great with Jake. And as a big fan of TDAT, I adore Emmy. I think she's beautiful. I'm going to treat Moonlight Mile separately as there are things I want to say about that film. You're right, in that Jake shared chemistry with Susan and Ellen.

I think Jake and Heath physically represented the beauty that OS Jack and Ennis saw in each other. I've always thought this myself and I think when Annie met Jake she couldn't help but feel she had Jack before her eyes.

Hi WDW!! Love the post...it is always nice to read about Jake and his leading lovers. He seems so natural on big screen in emotional scenes. Like Marina..I never would have guessed that Jake and Jennifer's love scene was so difficult for them..it sure looked great in trhe end....Michele

Hi Dani...I agree with your thoughts in your last paragraph. If Ang had found actors that looked like the characters in Annie Proulx's vision..I am not sure the film would have been successful at all. My husband has joked many times with me..that..if Danny Devito and Arnold Schwarzenegger(sp?) had starred in Brokeback Mountain...that I would not have given the movie a second thought...and he may be right...I cannot say...but I can honestly say that I am glad Ang chose Jake and Heath...Michele

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Michele - I was in the mood for sentiment tonight! I like to think of Jake being protective of his leading ladies :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Danny Devito and Arnie??? Which would be Jack? Oh what a thought Michele!

LOLOL WDW...it was not my thought..it came from the evil mind of my husband...!! I think he might be a little bit jealous of my Jakey obsession...!! BUT..to his credit..he did go see Brokeback with me... Michele

Well good for him for going, but bad for him for that evil suggestion ;D

LOL that was very funny Michelle - ;)

Well I fell in love with the Ennis and Jack of Annie's story, as well as our boys Jake and Heath.

Not sure where Annie commented on Jake and Heath, but she did - I recall she was very satisfied with the casting, thot Heath a fine Ennis and I remember she mentioned that Jake added a "mercurial" (I think not that exact word, maybe someone else remembers)quality to Jack that was not in the story but that she liked.

Anonymous said...

Pia - she said "Quicksilver" - isn't that beautiful? I loved both the Ennis and Jack of the story and of the film as well. :)

Anonymous said...

Right, Marina! Thanks! Of course quicksilver is mercury so I wasnt too far off, but leave it to Annie to choose the wonderful word!

Jake goofing around - the Donnie Darko directors cut features has a photo shooting section with lots of Jake goofing about, for those of you who havent seen it - and ends up with Jake doing Riverdance.

Anonymous said...

^^No, you weren't far off, Pia! I haven't seen some of these extra features and I have the Director's Cut - how could I have ever missed Jake doing Riverdance? I'm going to have to see that. :)

WDW thank you for bringing these words into focus. These words for me capture the quintessance of what the Jack character as brought to life by Jake, is all about. These words tell my own Jack-Ennis story. Jake's Jack touched a string inside my heart and drew music from it. (I'd always thought of it as having snapped long ago but it was intact, just rusty with disuse) He awakened a dormant person who might have been given up as lost forever

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Positively Pia and Marina - you have to see the Riverdance thing, Marina, it's really funny. The sort of thing that makes me want to cover my eyes though!

Quicksilver Jake! What a wonderful thing for Annie to say. It's a great thing that Annie sees something special in Jake's Jack, as we all do.

Hi Incognita - you describe beautifully something hich I think many of us felt. I wonder if that's one of the reasons why Jake appeals so much to those of us who aren't teenagers anymore - because his Jack appealed directly to us. Hmmm.

Thanks for your comments and happy Friday to everyone :D

Chemistry? Laura Dern.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Anouska the Economical - more words are not necessary. Laura Dern is definitely on the list. There's something about Jake and an older woman...

"Wanting things to progress, [no matter what] the response"

I've been thinking about these words and the whole idea of leading... not just Jake's leading ladies and men... but Jake himself and his intuitive leading as an actor, as an activist, and as a person. He's said he trusts his heart more than his head, so maybe that is a part of the instinctive initiative we see with him as Jack, pushing Ennis to communicate, or with him as an activist, pushing us all to grow.

Somehow that intuitive leading never looks like an effort on the screen, as so many of us here have said, even when he says it has cost him. It's as if there's a leader inside him that he himself is learning to trust--that knows better than he does how to do things. I'm not remotely an actor and the thought of the stage terrifies me; but I would think having that leader within would be the most valuable thing an actor could possess.

It seems it's also the key to how Jake leads US. Incognita, you said that "wanting things to progress, [no matter what] the response" is "the quintessence of what the Jack character, as brought to life by Jake, is all about." It's what "touched the string" inside your heart and "drew music from it." That kind of awakening response happened to me too and seems to have happened to so many of us.

So I guess in a lot of ways, Jake is OUR leading man.

Great line, Kim!

"Jake is our leading man"

I love these words Kim

Kim - what a great post :) Without doubt Jake is a leader, our leader. Whenever I hear the argument that actors are like the rest of us doing a job, I think of Jake and know it's not true. There's nothing ordinary about him. Not only when he's on film and - hopefully - on stage, but in interviews and at public events, he exhibits an amazingly sexy confidence. He's opened doors for me too in my own life, as he has done for so many. He definitely pushes me - isn't that great?!

Pia and Incognita couldn't agree more. Kim's words are inspiring!

Off out for dinner, see you later - have a wonderful Friday evening :)

Hi WDW, hope you're enjoying your meal out as I type this. Have the blood sausage! ;-)

Ah Jake's leading ladies, a small but priveleged harem. Who can deny a pang of jealousy at the joy they have tasted? ;-) Jake has interacted beautifully with all his female leads (and don't forget Katherine Keener, another older woman with whom Jake sizzled in his all-too-short appearance in "Lovely and Amazing". Have to admit I ended up fast-forwarding to the Jake bit, couldn't get into the film as a whole).

My favourite of his on-screen lovers of the female persuasion has to be Jennifer. She was always my favourite "Friend" with a real talent for comedy, which is why she impressed me so much as the torn and troubled Justine, in a film billed as a black comedy, but which for me was a brilliantly-played tragedy, with Jake and Jen turning in a memorable performance with undeniable chemistry (and no trace of the awkwardness they say they felt, as others found too). The out-takes on the DVD are so cute and funny, where they kept corpsing during the bedroom scene and Jake got a fit of the Gyllengiggles.

I find it really endearing that Jen has referred to herself as Jake's Mrs.Robinson and the GLAD awards showed that the friendship has endured. His protective feelings towards her in the face of criticism from a harsh director confirm that, for all his "goofing" around he's chivalrous too, brought up to be a gentleman and doing his parents proud.

However, when it comes to chemistry, well it has to be with Heath that Jake conjured up the most powerful and passionate performance of his career to date, in a film that, no matter how many other wonderful films either man goes on to star in, will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Despite the obvious differences from the Jack and Ennis she committed to the page, I'm sure Annie Proulx couldn't fail to feel that Jake and Heath had put flesh on their bones, passion in their hearts and portrayed their doomed love affair like no other pairing ever could.

When this subject came up elsewhere this week I said that Jake and Heath were born to play Jack and Ennis and I truly believe that. As for the electricity, the bittersweet magic they wove between them, I wouldn't say it was mere chemistry...for me,pure alchemy is nearer the mark.

That's more than enough from me once again. Here's to a great weekend for all Wet Dark and Wilders!

Lovely post, Nadine!

I recall reading that Jake played a "leadership role" in high school.

Anonymous said...

" It's as if there's a leader inside him that he himself is learning to trust--"
Very insightful. He's said that he tries to be a "mindful person." I get an impression that he consciously tries to have a positive effect on everything and everyone he comes in contact with. His comments on how he approached his character and Heath's character in BBM really impressed me. IMHO,the really great actors are the ones who perform their work with respect and honesty and courage. They are the ultimate storytellers and they illuminate the dark places. Ang said he saw a kind of innocence in both young men that drew him to them. I found that combination of innocence and courage and pure beauty irresistable. Thanks WDW. This was very meditative.

Thank you all, these were very beautiful posts for me to read when I got home today. Yes, I have to say that Jake's performance as Jack had the same effect on me as it did on all of you.

I've loved all of Jake's performances with his leading ladies, but my favorite of Jake's leading ladies is Ellen Pompeo, but WDW said she is going to do a separate thread on MM, so I'll save my comments for then, other than that she's a homegirl. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Nadine - what a fantastic comment - thanks! Jak and his leading ladies - how I love them all and I definitely want to return to them. I agree with you on Lovely and Amazing, definitely one for the fast forward but some precious glimpses ;D

I'm sure Annie Proulx couldn't fail to feel that Jake and Heath had put flesh on their bones, passion in their hearts and portrayed their doomed love affair like no other pairing ever could. - this was a real inpiration for me - the film Jack and Ennis were nothing like Annie's but she fell for them just as we did.

Positively Pia - I remember that too. Jake definitely would have stood out. Just how he likes it, I'm sure.

Bobbyanna IMHO,the really great actors are the ones who perform their work with respect and honesty and courage. They are the ultimate storytellers and they illuminate the dark places. - this is wonderful. Ang was fortunate to get these actors when youth and talent converged bringing a whole load of qualities, inclding these you mention.

Hi Marina! Ellen is a special favourite of mine and yes I want to do something special for her.

Thanks everyone for your comments - you inspired by new post :)
