Jake's ladies - Ellen, Catherine and Chloe

The other day we were looking at Jake Gyllenhaal's leading ladies - and chap - in the movies, but there were one or two that weren't mentioned, and chief among these is Ellen Pompeo. Moonlight Mile is one of my absolute favourite films of all time and is so completely independently of my Jakebug, which I caught a little later. And one of the reasons why I love this film so much is Ellen Pompeo.

Ellen's portrayal of grief-stricken, struggling Bertie, staying strong and engaged with life despite all it had thrown in her path, was wonderful and at the end, a rarity for some Jake films, there were tears of joy. Now when I watch this film, with or without the illuminating commentary by Jake, Dustin and director Brad Silberling, I give Jake the full appreciation he deserves - getting past those shades of brown and yet another bad haircut. As Jake says in the commentary, in his films, it's the hair that has to suffer.

The chemistry between Jake and Ellen is perfect and real. I wasn't surprised when I learned quite a while ago that Jake had come up to her in a car park and told her she was the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen. Jake hadn't known he was about to act with her in just a few weeks. Later on, Ellen came to see this moment as fate, but she herself dismissed this encounter as 'an awkward sort of flirtatious moment', in which they both flirted with the other, leading to real chemistry on the set of Moonlight Mile. Ellen agreed that he had the 'It' factor: 'I said it 500 times before and I'll say it again, it can't be articulated. Watch the movie and you see it. Watch anything he does and you'll see it.' Ellen also tells us how Jake loves to cook and had rustled up for her 'Pasta, salad, chocolate chip cookies, anything. He's a great guy. He likes to have fun and he loves to live life.' Jake AND chocolate chip cookies baked by Jake - does it get any better than that? Judging by the picture here of Jake and other co-star Susan Sarandon, the chemistry wasn't confined to Ellen! The picture of Jake and Maggie was taken at the Hollywood premiere of Moonlight Mile.

I'll be back to Ellen another time, but I want to have a brief look at two of Jake's less familiar leading ladies, Catherine Keener in Lovely and Amazing, and Chloe Sevigny who had the fortune to be cast as Jake's wife in Zodiac but suffered all the disadvantages of a match less than perfect and so she didn't even get a kiss.

I'll admit to something here: Lovely and Amazing is the only film by Jake I've not seen. To me it's an example of a film in which Jake has been picked to play the stereotypical young, handsome lover of a woman going through a midlife crisis. I realise I may be doing the film an injustice and I make no judgement on the quality of the acting as I've not seen it. Undoubtedly, it's a great cast. One thing I can uderstand is that Jake would clearly have been a top choice for any director because he is so clearly the type of young man any woman of any age would fall for. Director Nicole Holofcener said of his choice of Jake: 'Jake -- when he walked in the room our knees just went weak! I needed a guy who was young enough for it to be appalling, but sexy and manly enough to be understandable... Well, he's got the Bubble Boy hair in it and the Bubble Boy eyebrows. That was not planned, but that's what I got and he looks great.' No argument there - not certain about the appalling bit though.

Jake himself looked back on Lovely and Amazing as a film he enjoyed. In the runup to The Day After Tomorrow, Jake was asked which of his performances in his 'independent' films he looked back on with fondness and he picked Lovely and Amazing: 'I probably would say there are pieces of every performance that I like, not one performance that is great. But I do like the movie "Lovely and Amazing".' This was because there was 'A comfort, a real sense of camaraderie on the set which made me feel comfortable. I was a young actor not having the experience that so many other actors have who have been in the business for a long time. Building up a defense and figuring out ways of bringing things up even when you're not supported, is something I don't have. Whenever I feel like I falter, it's because I don't feel like I'm completely supported. In that movie, I walked into rehearsals with Catherine Keener and she immediately made me feel sexy and I remember Nicole Holofcenter, the director was like, 'Do you want some coffee?' and I'm 'Yeah, I'll have some coffee.' She's like [Catherine] 'I'll have anything he has.' And I was like, 'Okay, cool!' You don't get that from other actors. Usually you walk on and you're like, 'Can I have a coffee?' And they're like 'oh, you want coffee.' And I'm like, 'what? What's wrong with coffee?' So I like that film because I just felt relaxed and myself, and honest, and happy.' Here's a picture of Jake at the premiere.

As for Chloe Sevigny's Melinda, she had to deal with being there simply to make Jake Gyllenhaal seem less physically attractive, those are her words and I think that's rather unfair to herself. As the only woman on set and a relatively minor major character, she had to watch her co-stars become consumed by their own obsessions. Melanie, by contrast, wanted no part in the Zodiac world, seeing how it was directly affecting their family. So she was an outsider, in the story and on set. And her clothes... 'The wardrobe really affects me, and the hair and make-up, and all of that. I felt like they were trying to make me look frumpy to make Jake look less attractive. [Laughs] He has this unattractive girlfriend, therefore you can believe he’s less attractive. I don’t know. That’s my own insecurities. But I did like that she wasn’t glamorous obviously in any regard. She was a working mother, and she was very practical. I got to be kind of cute in the beginning. I liked that she was this practical, sassy, no nonsense lady.' I had no idea that Melinda had also worked at the Chronicle.

When Chloe is asked what it was like working with Jake, she paints a rather adorable picture of a clever, funny and rather frustrated individual bouncing all over the place: 'We had some rehearsals where we went through all of our scenes and talked through the scenes and the dialogue, and he was very active in rewriting or adjusting his dialogue. I’m not a writer. I’m happy with the lines you give me to a certain extent. But he was very active in that and he would come with new ideas for me, for my lines. [Laughs] He was very boyish and very funny. He kept the whole crew in stitches. They were all very charmed by him. He’s very creative. He has so much energy. He’s always bouncing off the walls. After 80 takes, of course, I think he would get bored a little bit, especially when it was my coverage, so he’d be switching up the lines and stuff. His mind is always very active.'

Can't believe I've got to log off now with such an intriguing post just gone up! I have an intense shift at work tomorrow, with a new computer system. AAAgh, so I'll need some serious Jaking when I get home and this will do nicely! See you tomorrow,WDW and fellow Jake-junkies Nxxx

WDW, you've outdone yourself again. I love hearing about Jake's leading ladies, and Ellen and Susan are two of my favorites. How nice was her first meeting was with Jake! I had no idea how much I would love Moonlight Mile; it's one of my favorite movies now too. Thanks for the pics of some of my favorite scenes.

I haven't seen Lovey & Amazing either; you make it sound intriguing, so now I'll have to see it. ;) I loved Chloe in Zodiac, especially the scene where she met Jake, er Robert, at the restaurant. He was adorable, spilling his waterglass and asking for change for the payphone. I could just picture Melanie thinking, "oh just shutup and kiss me already." I'm one of those recycled teenagers too, and I love it! One person put a picture of him on my monitor when I came in to work one day, and I said "I'd like to have one of those every morning if it's not too much trouble. Dang, they never did it again. lol :)

Hi, WDW. I made some comments about Ellen Pompeo in your other post about the lucky ladies that have "been" with Jake, so I won't say anything more other than I still like Ellen and she does have a very unique beauty....Oh, and Chloe definitely got a bad deal - not even getting a kiss!

I have seen Lovely and Amazing but not before I saw Catherine Keener plastering herself all over Jake at the SAG AWARDS in 2006! At the time she had her own hunky husband and I didn't apppreciate her staking a claim on Jake. When I realized that she had acted with him in a movie, I understood how she could be a bit possessive. So many people want a piece of Jake and only a few very fortunate ones have been rewarded. I don't blame anyone for being so affected by him that they feel they have a right to him forever.

Why did his hair always have to suffer? I realize how shallow this is now, but the reason why I never warmed up to Jake in the past despite his more than competent acting was because of his hair! And since I didn't follow him in the gossip magazines, I didn't know that he didn't look like that in his real life. Otherwise I would have cut him some slack. It was only in 2005 when he had so many movies coming out that I started paying more attention to him and wondered where he had been hiding. It was like he grew up over night and to say I suddenly sat up and took notice is an understatement.... Then along came Brokeback and my fate was sealed!

Hi, you have a great site here. It seems to be calm, cool, intelligent and thoughtful. I have seen Lovely and Amazing. It was screened straight after Jake won his BAFTA in 2006. I'll leave it a mystery until you have seen it:D Moonlight Mile is my favourite out of all the films Jake has done. It stays with me and very personal and is a real source of strength.

No matter who Jake acts with man or woman, romantic or not, he envokes chemistry. As Ellen said she "cannot articulate what IT is" . I think he pours a lot of himself into each role and I look forward to many more sterling performances by Mr Gyllenhaal.

You are so right, Babs. There really is something special about him. He's a joy to watch in just about everything I've seen him in. Goodnight, Nadine. :)

I think Lovely & Amazing is a wonderful film, and Jake managed to make Jordan endearing and believable with very little screen time. Watch it, WDW. Even if, like many others, you can't warm to the women of the film, you owe it to yourself to experience seductive jailbait!Jake. No jury on earth would have convicted Michelle. :)

Nadine - I'm sorry you have to go - good luck with work tomorrow and we'll see you then *)

Marina - thanks! I love talking about these wonderful ladies. Ellen is wonderful and, of course, Chloe was fabulous at Cannes, pointing us all out to Jake. Also, I really did enjoy choosing the pics and took some time over it.

Having researched this story tonight, I'm now keen to see Lovely & Amazing myself so I feel a visit to Amazon is on the cards. I've seen a few YouTube clips and that's it. I thought Chloe was wonderful in Zodiac when it very definitely wasn't a showcase for her. She did so well with what she was given - I'd have insisted on a kiss though... I have no pictures of Jake at my new job as the computers have a fixed desktop, damn. So far, they just think I'm a movie buff! It's strange for me because everyone else knows the truth :D

Hi Dani - that's funny about Catherine at the SAG awards but, as you say, we can hardly blame her and he obviously left a lasting impression. As Jake said in that interview, she made him feel sexy, he's not going to forget that in a hurry! I love how he is with older women :D I do agree that in MMile, the hair is a problem! I don't think Jake liked it much either...

welcome Babs - thanks for commenting :D I'm so glad you like the site and, my gushing aside, find it intelligent. Tht's my aim and the commentors certainly are intelligent. Moonlight Mile is a very special film for me too and I have almost as big an emotional reaction when I watch it as I do Brokeback. And that's because of the scenes between Jake and Ellen, Jake and Susan and Jake and Dustin - simply wonderful. The jukebox scene has me in a heap every time. And you're so right - Jak finds chemistry with everyone, male or female and it's a phenomenal gift. Thanks for comenting, Babs :D

Hi Cherita - you posted while I was chatting away... I will give it ago although Jailbait Jake has never really been my thing, the older he gets the more gorgeous he becomes to me. TDAT was the first film in which I completely lost myself over Jake - how sexy is Wet Sam?! But, yes I'll give it ago. It's true, though, he does seem to have Bubble Boy hair in this! I just can't wait for Rendition when it'll be perfect.

Lovely, as Ive said before to find a wonderful post to read during my five p.m. evening before dinner wee Scotch!

I really like Jake's "leading ladies" = Jennifer A., Chloe and Ellen. I havent seen L&A. I like them as actors, and people, Ellen is BEAUTIFUL, as Jake noticed. All fine actresses. & they have appreciated Jake as an actor & person and been supportive of him. I loved how Chloe pointed out the lashers shouting for Jake, at Cannes. I think there's been fortuitous relationships, all around.

That being said, I will say that I had a problem with the Moonlight Mile script, involvement of Gyllenhaal family on the set, and obviously an MV connection with Brad S.; Brad S's over-involvement with the story, because of his personal involvement, Dustin's hubris, references to The Graduate, and Jake, as Dustin noticed, Jake didnt get much dialogue! -

Our film study group of Moonlight Mile on DC was fairly mixed, in our reviews.

Although: Moonlight Mile! A GREAT song, and the opening shots of Jake walking on water (shot on MV)
absolutely beautiful!

I lov'd the "jukebox scene" although I felt it not wholly realized, and wish'd that the deleted scene of Bertie dancing with the bartender (manager?) was kept in and, in fact, elaborated upon!

I'm a real fusspot! I even have "issues" with Zodiac!

Love the comment of Babs - this site "cool, calm, intelligent and thoughtful!" Thanks WDW, you set a good standard!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Positively Pia - thanks for that. I'm the same, as soon as I finish a post, I heave a deep sigh and out comes the wine and scotch! Im glad you like this one :D I can say over and over again how much Chloe won me over with her generosity at Cannes, taking a back seat to Jake and directing him to his fans, and Ellen is absolutely beautiful. Oh and I love Jennifer, she's exactly the same age as me so that helps ;D

I can understand what you're saying about all the stuff that went on behind the scenes - and the MV connection - but there is so much about MMile that I enjoy and wrings out my heart. And it;s hard to blame Brad for that over involvement when this was his story.

You have issues with Zodiac?? Dear, oh dear ;D Time for the single malt...

Hey WDW...thanks for your usual stellar posting...I always know I am going to find something totally awesome when I come to your site..and I am never disappointed. I echo many poster's comments that Jake seems to have chemistry with all his fellow actors. I have one comment on MMile..I love that movie..bad hair notwithstanding...but I have to hedge a bit on Jake's chemistry with Susan Sarandon.. I have watched that movie countless times, and I still do not see a great amount of chemistry between Jake and Susan...to me...he has had the greatest chemistry with Heath and Ellen. Just my .02...and btw...WDW...I too cannot wait for "Rendition Hair"..LOL!! Michele

Anonymous said...

On a previous thread I made a comment about the many actors that pop up in more than one Jake film. Dermot Mulroney is another one. He was in Lovely and Amazing. Happened to have been the husband of Catherine Keener at the time. And was also in Zodiac!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Michele - Good to hear from you :) As for the Jake and Susan chemistry - I feel that this chemistry was something that took place outside the film itself, and during publicity and interviews. On those occasions I find the chemistry very strong. In the film, it couldn't have happened as Susan was the bereaved mother and focused on that role.

How I long for Rendition too :D

Hi Dani - it really is such a small world, as I reflect in several posts. It amazes me how some actors keep popping up, especially John Carrol Lynch, but also I noticesthat in World Trade Center, Maggie's father (in law?) was Jack Twist's father.

Anonymous said...

Well who is NOT bedazzled by Jake? Lance Armstrong musta been positivly embarrassed by the look on his face, when with our boy.

Hi there WDW. Have been lurking here and I love the sensitivity and insights you provide every day about my favorite crush! Thank you so much.

Although I must be the only one out there who doesn't find Ellen P. particularly attractive! And I had trouble identifying with her character on MM so didn't appreciate her so much, although I do think the movie is good and Jake is fabulous.

L&A is an interesting movie, as a middle-aged woman myself I thought Jake was incredibly cute but felt that bedding him was a stretch for Catherine's character because of his age, yowza! Of course I guess that was the point!

And I LOVE Chloe S. I wish her part was bigger in Zodiac. I found her character immensely appealing on many levels. And she puts up with Jake's Graysmith through incredible trials. I think I would too if I had the chance! ;-)

I read a lot about Jake but I hadn't seen these particular comments from his leading ladies. Thank you again!

Jasmine - welcome! Thank you so much for commenting. It's much appreciated :)

Not to worry abot you not liking Ellen particularly. It's good we're all different - for instance, my dislike of Gwyneth in Proof - it just shows how Jake has something to offer us all. I do like Chloe myself, but I would never have let Jake go...

Thanks Jasmine and I hope I see you again soon :D

Re: Ellen Pompeo. I can connect myself to Jake in three degrees through Ellen (Ellen's late mother and my mother were childhood friends).

Matter of fact, when the leaves are off the trees, I can look out my window and see the house Ellen grew up in.

It's a small world after all.

Another great one WDW! Oh I just loved Jake in Moonlight Mile. It is one of my favorites for sure. I was just amazed by how much Jake said with his eyes and facial expressions in that movie. To me he spoke volumes even if it was not with words. He really has such a gift the way he can say so much with just his eyes or a look...I am awe oh him.

Oh his hair in that movie I had read somewhere that it was styled that way for the time period of the movie as where the cloths....what was it early 80's I think.

I also loved Ellen in that movie and she was amazing too. I think their chemisty was the best out of all his leading ladies. That movie really hit me right in the heart.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Welcome Lida! Thanks for commenting. It really is a small world. I love your conection to Ellen, through your mothers.

Hi Anon - Moonlight Mile is simply amazing and, although Joe isn't given much to say through much of the film, Jake conveys so much with just a look. But yes, terrible hair from the day, along with the drab colours. I think, judging by the music, that it was set in the 70s. Ellen was perfect for the role, sexy and vulnerable at the same time. Thanks very much for your comment :D

Xenia said...

L&A is an agreeable film, if not exactly unforgettable IMO, and Jake's character isn't "sterotypical" at all, I'd say that he's rather "peculiar"...:)
Watch the movie: Jordan's sweetness and goofiness will win you WDW, you'll love him.

I'm particularly jealous of Ellen Pompeo, I don't know why...maybe because she's my age...and she's beautiful...and she got to flirt with Jake...;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Xenia I'm going to order L&A today as I like the sound of this 'peculiar' Jordan. The idea of having Jake rush up to you in the street saying you're the most beautiful girl he's ever seen, well I think we're all jealous of Ellen for that one! Sigh.

Anonymous said...

does anyone wonder if Jake is going to be at his mom's screenwriring presentation on MV on Aug 29? it's a family that shows up for each other.

Anonymous said...

Moonlight Mile is one of my all time faves, too. I didn't even notice that Jake didn't say much the first time I watched -- he didn't have to. How he conveys so much with his eyes and face are a mystery to me! And he LISTENS! He's never just waiting to say HIS lines -- something I sometimes get from many other young actors. Ellen Pompeo was very good, too, but I find her merely attractive, not "beautiful."

Lovely and Amazing is a strange film, but the characters are all very believable, at least to me. Not everyone in the world is lovable and charming, nor does everyone make smart choices, as demonstrated by these characters. Catherine Keener has been in several of Nicole Holofcener's (a woman, by the way) films. She always seems the same to me in all her films, even Capote for which she was nominated for an Oscar, another mystery to me. And Jake? Cutest kid I'VE ever seen for sure -- in fact, he is downright "beautiful" in L&A!

Anonymous said...

I thought Jake's *sympathetic* chemistry with Susan Sarandon in MM was wonderful. And she was so spiky and real in that film.

Chloe is great, too - I've liked her since Boys Don't Cry.

Anonymous said...

WDW, we'll have to insist on a non-1970s role for Jake, and soon :) He always wins the struggle with the clothes and hair, but I'd love to see him aesthetically enhanced :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anouska! I am so ready to drag Jake out of the 1970s ;D I know there have been exceptions, but there have been a run of films in which Jake has to suffer the misfortunes of bad style and an unkind hairdo (and speaking for myself, I'll include Jarhead in that, although that was counteracted by the wardobe, or lack of it ;) ). Thank heavens for Rendition!

I love your description of Susan as 'spikey' - she really is and I like it.

Hi Positively pia - I've wondered about that myself, and I suspect that Jake knows that we know that he knows that we know....

Hey Beckela :) I'm not familiar with Catherine Keener at all but I will give this one ago - although Jake may be a teeny weeny bit too young for me in this one :D

I agree with eveything you say about Jake being a good listener. He acts this so well I imagine he must also be a good listener in real life, although he did admit to not being good at keeping a secret.

Anonymous said...

I agree, WDW, that Jake MUST be a good listener in RL as well -- I love those many photos of him "listening" to others. He's so intent and appears to be genuinely interested.

I, too, prefer the more mature Jake, but watching him in his early films is a treat for me. After BBM captured my very soul, I watched (and subsequently bought) all his films in order of their release, some for the second time, from a totally different perspective. It was like seeing him grow up before me -- quite interesting. He has always been unique and delightful.

Speaking of Jake's chemistry with women on screen, particularly older women, he and Laura Dern in October Sky were wonderful together. And talk about a "young" Jake, wasn't he about 17 then?

Anonymous said...

At the risk of getting rotten eggs thrown at me I will say that I liked Moonlight Mile and even saw it several times before I ever started looking at it for Jake. In the beginning I saw it because it was a movie that appealed to me and starred two of my favorite actors - Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon.

Jake did an admirable job but I think I would have still liked the film with any other competent actor. I guess I am extremely shallow and just didn't connect to Jake himself then becasue I was distracted by that Hair! I hate that style on anyone. I was a teenager in the seventies and most styles of hair and clothes were horrendous. The 70s was my least favorite decade. But even a crew cut would have been better for me.

The hair again is precisely why I didn't fall in love with Jake in The Good Girl even though I liked the movie. And it ruins the end of Bubble Boy for me too. I can take the weird Jimmy hair all throughout the film but in the end when it's down in his face it turns me off. In fact the only time I like it down in his face even a little is in Brokeback during the reunion kiss when Ennis has just kissed the heck out of Jack leaving him stunned and dishelveled as he walks up the stairs!

Cherita said...

I just wanted to add that I agree with everything Beckela said above about both movies, except the part about Catherine Keener always being the same, because I hadn't noticed that. I actually like her a lot. WDW, trust me, Jake may still have been young in L&A, but he was, as Holofcener said, definitely manly enough for the scenario to work. You will be aroused.

Hi,

can't read all your comments right now (will do so on the weekend) but I had to jump in and say, that Lovely & Amazing is actually a very nice movie!

I just watched it again on the weekend and was surprised how much I enjoyed it - although it doesn't have nearly enough Jake in it...
It's not only because Jake is absolutely adorable there, but the movie in general is really funny and sweet (not even sure, if those are the right words, but can't think of anything better now)...

Anonymous said...

You've done it again, WDW - given us another helping of Jake to feast upon! What a great article!
I too, think that Jake makes his co-starring women that much better, like perfect equals. I have always admired the on-screen and off-screen relationships he forms when filming. He certainly makes friends for life when working. Gosh, how I would love to "work" with him :)
I am not a huge fan of Lovely and Amazing, but agree that Jake fit the part to a tee. It is a great resume builder for him to work with so many big names.
I have a special place in my heart for MM...it just strikes a chord with me and the sense of loss and disconnect one feels in a helpless situation. I loved that Jake was in almost every scene!! And Ellen was outstanding. I wonder why the film didn't get more publicity when it was out?

Looking forward to many more yummy articles WDW!! keep them coming!

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hello chaps! It's really helped me to wind down to read this great post,WDW, and everyone's comments and different takes on Jake's lucky leading ladies! (Going live with our new computer system went much better than I expected although we're all still a bit boggle-eyed and have burned off so much nervous energy today we could have lit up the National Grid!)

But I digress, back to the matter in hand. With regard to the fortunate females who have starred opposite Jake and, in most cases, have got to play tonsil-tennis with him at the very least, I felt he had definite and distinctive chemistry with them all to varying degrees, although like you, WDW,Gwyneth Paltrow left me somewhat cold and unconvinced, although I enjoyed "Proof" and Jake's performance in it (and he was the fittest Maths graduate I've ever seen!).

It reinforces all our preconceptions of him that all his female co-stars,several of them women of a certain age, are all so unfailingly quite bowled over by his talent, his personality, his humour, his intelligence his cooking and his energy. I know he has to have SOME failings and must surely, at times, behave like a bit of a git, like any man (or woman, for that matter), but so many of his co-stars, female and male, tell tales of him lighting up the set, showing great kindness and consideration and having everybody in fits of laughter, so the weight of evidence would suggest that he really is every bit as lovely as he seems! Makes you wonder why at least one of those beautiful actresses didn't get their sticky little mitts on him and hang on for dear life if he was available at the time! Chloe Sevigny (who I loved in "Zodiac" and seems a very "sorted" lady) really did draw the short straw!

I don't have any kids, but can imagine having a son of Jake's age who might have brought him home as a mate in his teens or twenties - and who wouldn't have had some unclean thoughts about said son's young charming companion?!
That said, for me too,Jake just gets better as he matures as an actor and as a man. Beautiful boy though he always was,he's definitely grown into his face and those extra laughter lines just add to the "phwoar" factor.

"Moonlight Mile" is high up on my list of Jake films, too, it was so well acted that it never descended into schmaltz, dealt with a tricky subject with such sensitivity and humour and had the kind of happy ending that made you want to cheer rather than being cloyingly sentimental. Ellen was perfect as Bertie, a really touching performance from an unconventionally beautiful woman.

As for the faux pas in the hair department to which Jake's roles have subjected him, it's not something which I've ever found a problem. I think that might be because "Brokeback Mountain" was my first Jake experience, it reawakened my interest in cinema and I had never seen Jake (or Heath, for that matter)before the pre-publicity for "BBM". That film, and particularly Jake and Heath's performances in it, had such a seismic affect on me and made me fall hookline and sinker for the man who gave us Jack Twist, such that subsequent forays into his pre-Brokeback catalogue(only Highway left to buy now) were coloured by that. Whatever hair style he was forced to sport, whatever indignities wardrobe may have heaped upon him, the essential Jake is there in all his roles for me and that's all I ask(I could even see past the Grade 1 in the phenomenal "Jarhead", although I must admit I'd rather he didn't ever have to go to that extreme again!)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone - I'm definitely ready for some distraction from the football tonight...

Thanks so much for your comments. I really appreciate them :) Yet again, my mind's been changed by the discussion here and L&A is on order.

Hi Beckela We are so lucky to have been able to watch Jake develop as an actor and as a man in his films. That's quite a gift he's given us. And yes, I ustn'y forget Laura Dern, one of my favourite actresses. Jake has worked with some very talented women, that's for sure, and they ll seem to fall for him! Who can blame them.

Hi Dani - no eggs from me! I agree tht it can be hard when first encountering Jake to get past the hair of Moonlight Mile and Good Girl, although I disagree with Bubble Boy as I thought Jimmy looked so sweet at the end. But now, watching The Good Girl, I don't notice the hair and Ifind him sexy. As for Joe in MMile, I just love him.

Hey Cherita I'll get back to you when I've seen it ;)

Hi Uli good to see you - thanks for popping by when you have no time. Sometimes L&A is on TV here very late at night, I have to look out for it.

Hey Valentine - thanks for your comment! And the pressure... ;) I think on the whole Jake must be great to work with (I know he drove everyone mad on Jarhead but a lot of that was to do with the Swoff character), just look at the friends he makes on set. I remember when MMile came out and there was very little fuss about it. I didn't get to see it until it came out on DVD.

Nadine - another wonderful comment - thank you so much for the time you've spent. Also glad to hear your day wasn't too bad.

I'm with you on Proof, but yes, I don't kno how the other leading ladies could have resisted Jake. Poor Chloe. She deserved more! It was good to see her at Cannes and how friendly she and Jake seemed toards each other. I saw it first hand so I can vouch for it.

We hear a few times about how Jake has cooked for his fellow actors, including for Austin during TDAT, and I love to think of Jake turning up on set with chocolate chip cookies - and I bet he did!

As you say, after BBBM, whatever Jake's wearing in a film, however he looks, the talent just shines through.

Talking of BBM - I saw it all the way through last night, really needing to after all our chats about it, and it hit me hard :( Your comments have really lifted me from the blues, thanks :)
