It was a lean summer for sightings of Jake Gyllenhaal in restaurants - possibly, while in MV, Jake prefers to cook himself, taking advantage of the fresh food, the fish markets and his mother's herb garden, not to mention the time that a holiday brings. That all came to an end with TIFF, and Jake began to be seen in restaurants in Toronto, in New York and in LA. Having just disposed of a pizza and still supping a glass of red wine, this seems like the perfect opportunity to refresh my guide to eating with the Gyllenhaals. These first pictures are of Jake visiting a restaurant at TIFF in 2005 - before the SUV craze.
Toronto
Dining out in Toronto during TIFF poses all kinds of problems. If you're not famous, the crowds are so large it is possible that you will not find anywhere with a table within a half-mile radius of a George Clooney sighting and, when that sighting is on a Saturday night, your trouble is doubled. One solution is to weave your way into the busy bar of one of the main hotels and have a liquid dinner instead. If you are a celebrity, on the other hand, you'll definitely get a table but it may feel like you're in a goldfish bowl and you have to run the red carpet dash every time.
Jake visited Sotto Sotto in Toronto and ended up having to make his getaway through the kitchens, much to the delight of the staff and a reporter who just happened to be outside chatting to the staff. At the time, the legend went that Jake was picked up outside the restaurant in the wee hours of Friday morning by Reese Witherspoon. It has since generally been agreed that Reese has better things to do with her time than act as a chauffeur and that the blonde driver was the same lady who accompanied Jake to the press conference, also causing no end of trouble for the paparazzi (while they were distracted it seems Reese was driven round the back). Jake did not disappoint: 'Deeply V-necked, pleasantly broad-shouldered, and with that paralyzing dopey smile', Jake made sure to congratulate Mama, the cook, on her lasagne. We shall be returning to lasagne later on.
The Sotto Sotto website is a delight, and not just for hungry bellies. You will be serenaded with the sounds of Italy. The menu itself is extremely appetising and, compared to British prices, incredibly reasonable. I could just eat the mousse-cioccolato right now.
Also on Avenue Road, but part of the Park Hyatt Hotel, is Morton's Steakhouse. Admittedly, Jake probably didn't eat here this time, but Peter Sarsgaard did - along with some other people called Brad and Angelina (but not with Peter). Not being a meateater, I may have given this one a miss. The picture below is competely un-Toronto related but it does include food.
New York City
In between nipping to Boston for baseball and Flushing Meadows for the tennis, Jake made sure he left plenty of time to eat and he was seen dining out on two occasions. On Saturday 15 September, Jake visited Bar Pitti on Sixth Avenue with director Noah Baumach. 'Waiting for a table can be a chore, but all is forgiven once you take a seat, thanks to authentic, affordably priced cuisine and some of the friendliest waiters in town. Despite the packed seating, Bar Pitti wins you over with Italian charm - it's the kind of place where the waiter brings over the list of daily specials on a well-worn blackboard, and if you want more cheese, a block of Parmesan and a grater suddenly appear.' I definitely get the sense that Jake favours Italian cuisine - a man after my own heart.
On Sunday 16 September, Jake and a mystery lady went for brunch at August: 'Located in the heart of New York's Greenwich Village, August is a local, critically acclaimed bistro offering Regional European fare for dinner, lunch, and brunch. August features a diverse menu rich in the finest traditions of Europe's food cultures, ranging from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe using local and seasonal ingredients.' For brunch, one can have oven baked eggs, smoked salmon, burgers, all washed down with a champagne cocktail. This place can do no wrong in my eyes because it serves mushy peas.
Los Angeles
It's not been easy keeping up with Jake over the last few days, the way he's notching up airmiles, and while one lot of hearsay has it that Jake flew down on Sunday afternoon to see the band Wilco play at ACL in Austin, Texas, another has it that he instead flew to Los Angeles for a business dinner at Il Sole on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood. What got my attention in all this confusion is that, if Jake did eat at Il Sole on Sunday night, he ate a seven layer lasagne. Hats off to Jake for that one. I have to wonder how it compared with the Toronto Sotto Sotto lasagne. As for Il Sole: 'Il Sole is a cozy, boutique Italian restaurant specializing in authentic contemporary cuisine. The restaurant features an extensive regional Italian wine list'. Apparently, it accepts walk ins and also does take out. It also still looks cheaper than many of the restaurants near me. I do like the sound of a business dinner so close in time to the Brothers news.
Finally, just before Jake flew to Toronto, he visited another old favourite LA restaurant, Jar on Beverly Boulevard, this time with a mystery male. (Lucky Jake to be dining with so many people of mystery - it must make lots to talk about.) 'Jar, a modern chophouse in the heart of Los Angeles, dazzles Angelenos with the allure of Chef Suzanne Tracht’s familiar retro dishes from the American culinary repertoire, including her signature Pot Roast, Kansas City Steak, award winning French Fries, market-fresh sides and perfect martinis.' While I love the sound of the martinis, this is another meaty place, but I adore the look of it. I quite fancy one of these to go with my chocolate mousse from earlier: 'Key Lime “PIE” - Absolute Vanilla vodka, pineapple juice, fresh lime and Roses lime juice'.
This picture was taken at Orso's restaurant in LA and is an entirely gratuitous inclusion - on the basis of that shirt.
Includes pictures from IHJ and Just Jared.

WDW I an dissapointed with you, if you checked the video you will see that it was not his assistant that was in the back of the SUV with Jake, she had a light grey top on (in the picture they showed on et
alk), and the blonde in the SUV had a black top on. Also why should she shield her face, the assistant never been shy of the cameras before.
I love your foodie!Jake posts!
Btw, I don't like to upset the love, but I am pretty upset to see this rather nasty Gawker article.
What a tasty and mouth-watering post,WDW - and that's just the photographs!
Apart from being so sporty,Jake must have a very speedy metabolism to keep in such fabulous shape when he obviously really loves his food.
Hats off to his mystery companions who can seemingly retain an appetite when in his company. I'd be too keyed up to eat a thing and too terrified of dropping a big dollop of Mama's special tomato sauce down my front if I tried to force down a mouthful (not that I'm ever likely to be in that enviable position!).
I have to say,Sotto Sotto really gets my vote,as far as one can judge from a website etc. It looks really warm and inviting and the menu looks scrum! I've put on half a stone just reading it!
I also loved the article by the reporter who just happened to be lurking in SS's kitchens chatting up the staff when Jake appeared,a vision of loveliness as usual, conjured up by the journalist's description.
Nothing much took my fancy on the "August" brunch menu and they do mushy peas, you say? Bleeeugh!!! I feel proper queasy...
...now what can I do to take my mind off it. Aaah yes,I'll take another look at that photo of Jake leaving "Orso's" in that fine-knit,semi-diaphanous,pecs-clinging top! Aaaah, now that's better! ;-)
Hi Get Real - I saw that article earlier and found it very odd - I couldn't see any point to it except for jealousy that everybody who reports a sighting goes on about how gorgeous Jake is. As if that's a bad thing. Strange!
I'm glad you liked the post - the foodie ones are among my favourites to do :D
Hey Nadine - I always think that when I hear of Jake in restaurants - I envy his metabolism! I tink I'd lose all appetite if I were sitting in the same restaurant as Jake, let alome the same table. He must also have mastered the art of eating pasta - I have yet to do so.
I think Sotto Sotto is my favourite too, although I like the look if Jar's, just not the menu. Orso was very disappointing - but there are other things going for it - that photo is amazing!
You don't like mushy peas? Tut tut Nadine ;D Although I can't imagine eating them with baked egg.
Anon - sorry my post wasn't to your taste.
What a delish WDW "column"!
I've been a "foodie" since I found out at the age of six that our mideastern neighbors did not have the same boring anglo midwest food habits - but fresh fruit! spices! herbs! sweets galore! and then to grow up walking to school through the Italian neighborhood of fruit and vegetable carts, smell of fresh baked bread, etcetc. . . .
Food plus Jake - heaven on earth! He IS a sensualist! We know that!
Now I guess he's back in LA. Sigh! Im consoling myself with a very good rouquefort cheese with my shiraz.
thanks for today, WDW. is your voice returned yet?
Don't worry,Get Real, all this article goes to prove is that its author is a spiteful, spineless piece of excrement with no talent and,in all likelihood,a face like a bag of spanners. Same goes for some of the commenters. To borrow a smidge of Cockney rhyming slang, complete Merchant Bankers, the lot of 'em!
And I'm disappointed in you,Anonymous, that you should feel the need to be so condescending and critical of the creator of this excellent BLog,simply because she may not agree with your interpretation of a Pap video trying to propagate the Gyllenspoon myth(just my honest opinion). Happily, regular readers are more than grateful for the plethora of up-to-date Jake news and features which WDW takes a lot of time and trouble to provide.
Couldn't agree with you more, WDW and Nadine about that stupid article. I guess I don't find things like that "funny" or "amusing" when they just seem pathetic, mean and nasty. And yes the person who wrote it does seem spiteful and jealous.
Anyway, moving on. I am a total foodie and I love reading about Jake's foodie restaurants. Thanks, WDW for such great, colorful and very flavorful posts. :D Btw, I hope you are feeling much better!
Sorry, went off on one there! Jake (and WDW) brings out my over-protective streak!
I'm tired and crotchety so I think I'll hit the hay and dream of Jake cooking up a storm wearing his chef's apron...nothing else, just the apron!! ;-)
Night night folks xxx
Nadine - I'm blowing you a big kiss *) Thanks!
I'm also trying to imagine what a faceful of spanners looks like :D
Hi Positively pia - I'm a real foodie too and lucky enough to live in a great place for excellent restaurants, pubs and cafes, as well as fresh markets and specialised shops. I will always appreciate it. And Italian is without doubt my favourite - it's so fresh and quickly cooked, followed by those rich deserts, not to mention some beautiful wines. Blissful on a summer's evening to eat sitting outside such a place.
Jake is a sensualist I believe, and I also think it's something many of us have in common.
I'm on the Shiraz too ;)
I'm feeling much, much better this evening, thanks *) Probably best I don't sing though...
Thanks get Real and Nadine - Jake brings out my protective instincts too in a big way.
Oh no, the dream of Jake cooking wearing just an apron - I've had that one before ;)
I've always read that 'Reese picking up Jake out back Sotto Sotto' more as Reese's DRIVER pulled up to the back door while Reese was in the back seat.
Oh well.
Hi Felicia *)
The video showed the lady in the front. I really don't think it matters who it was. This is supposed to be about grub! ;) off for a liedown...
Yummy post WDW, in every way, including the Orso pic - love reading about Jake's food adventures. The "Key Lime Pie" sounds good to me too!
Toronto, New York, Boston, Austin, TX, and LA - our guy gets around! Can't wait to see our man in Morocco in October. ;)
Hi Marina! I don't nknow why it is but Food and Jake just go together - a feast for the senses.
I love the idea of cocktails named after desserts ;) Yes, it won't be long and then we have North African Jake - very exotic. Jake's obviously fine with flying so how aout another transatlantic trip? London, maybe? Just an idea :D
Absolutely delightful, WDW. I had a big grin on my face the entire time I read, which I must say made eating my dinner as I sit here quite difficult. :) I'm not only a vegetarian (ovo-lacto) but on a fairly restricted diet right now as well, so I have a hard time imagining the allure of places that serve pot roast, but Italian is my favorite ethnic food, too.
I also ran across the Gawker post. In my limited experience, everyone that participates there (including the bloggers) seems rather bitter and antagonistic, so I certainly don't see it as a fair sampling of opinion. I agree, some people seem to feel a backlash against Jake just because the majority of the world finds him so damn lovely.
Oh, and I did some rough estimations over at my blog; it's entirely possible that Jake really was in all three places on Sunday. We will probably never know!
^^A feast for the senses, that's for sure! ;)
Against my better judgement, I read that Gawker article too - totally ridiculous, utter crap and not worth wasting time on. I usually avoid nasty blogs like that - who needs them, I'd rather read about Jake eating sublime food, or his latest project, his thoughts, or just him *sigh*.
Looks like we have ourselves a spy who came in from the cold, just to correct us, and keep us on our toes (not!)
Good night, and hope you get your voice back soon! :)
Thanks so much Cherita - I've not eaten meat since I was a child myself, although now I have introduced fish into my diet (all beause of Mauritius - sigh...) and so a steakhouse or a pot roast does little for me too, but I love all this Italian food, with the luscious puddings and wines.
I agree about Gawker - some pople cannot cope with the fact that Jake is beautiful when encountered - why on earth should that be a surprise?
He could have done all three? I'll have to take a look! But - would one want to do NYC, Texas and LA all in one day?
Thanks for the comment :)
Thanks Marina - I'll be glad when I have the voice for singing in the car again ;) Good night *)
In response to Anon 22:42:
I am convinced that the blonde in the SUV in the vid IS Jake's Assistant, one reason being that the wave in her hair matches exactly the wave in his Assistant's hair in the airport pic taken earlier that day. As for why she covered her face, there could be a couple of speculative reasons for that, but in any case, for sure it was not Reese picking him up at Sotto Sotto, and many many Gyllenhaalics are of this opinion too, Anon 22:42.
Love the foodie post WDW! I now have some additions to my Jake restaurants in NYC. I've only been to Pastis. But there's the Spotted Pig, San Ambroeous, and now Bar Pitti and August. I'm glad Jake opts for good food no matter how ordinary and reasonable the prices are LOL! Sure wish I'd have known about Sotto Sotto in Toronto! I would SO have gone there! It is said the Mediterranean diet is the healthiest diet in the world. Jake sure looks healthy! That Gawker piece was someone's feeble attempt at humor, I think. It fell short.
"Paralyzingly dopey smile" is a perfect description :) even if that z is hard for me to write. WDW, you may recall my insistence last weekend on repeated showings of the "Happy Birthday Cannes" video which showcases the paralysingly dopey smile to perfection. I was so paralysed I couldn't even manage a second Cosmo.
Gah to all these contradictory sightings, let's just choose our favourites instead! :D
Jar mystery male? - Austin :)
SUV driver? - assistant
ACL or LA? - ACL :)
Am I the only person who reads the Gawker thing as a kind of reverse schadenfreude - "we all took the P but just look at him now?" type thing? If you read it straight, it just sounds as though the writer is madly envious, and my take on the writer is that that would not be his intention.
Mind you, since I'm 100% with twistedlogic on the Smiths (previous thread) being life-enhancing, funny and not depressing at all, feel free to disregard my theory.
I'm thrilled Jake was a medievalist, it's a sign of real depth.
*sigh*
Am I the only person who reads the Gawker thing as a kind of reverse schadenfreude - "we all took the P but just look at him now?"
I'm with you A. I thought it was funny. And if you click on words like 'hot', 'sizzling' and 'repulsively sexy' there are some nice pics! They love 'im.
*bigger sigh*
BIGGER *sigh*? Not possible :)
*
thanks Clare and Anouska! I would have biked right by this funny piece without a clue!
*sighs, hyperventilates, swoons and falls off fainting couch*
:D
As far as the Gawker article is concerned, let me just say this: I've loved Morrissey for years, and you, sir, are no Morrissey! ;)
I don't go over to Gawker or similar sites because I was turned off by them long ago, so maybe I prejudge, but if someone wanted to write a complimentary about J, they sure took the long way around. JMHO. I adore the Smiths and Morrissey, find them delightfully mopey, by that I mean they sing about some darker topics, but with dark humor and a smirk at life's irony, and see a little light at the end of the tunnel. Most of all, Morrisey's voice is beautifully resonant, and I love Johnny Marr's guitar. Just kidding, don't know why I felt compelled to write this, but there you have it!
Have a great day, all! :)
Hi everyone :)
Thanks for commenting Anon :D
Hi Bobbyanna - but in Toronto we had no time to eat! All those restaurants and no time, but I think we found a couple of good ones ourselves though. My list of NYC restaurants is growing. You only have to look at Jake to see what a goo diet he has ;D
Hey Anouska - I've been watching that clip a fair bit myself since the weekend. I just love that giggle! I thought you'd go with ACL. I agree with your 1 and 2 but go with LA for 3.
I do see what you and Clare are saying abut the Gawker post. At least they realise that everyone who sees Jake says he's incredibly beautiful - and we'd go along with that, wouldn't we :)
Clare I'm desperaely trying to think ow to top this - I'm waiting for Anouska
*sighs, hyperventilates, swoons and falls off fainting couch* - I fear you've been reading too much 19th-century literature again.
Hey Positively Pia :)
Hi Marina - yeay - another Smiths and Morrissey fan. I have a claim to fame - I was nearly run over by him once. My second Smiths story is that many years ago, in Communist days (I was very young;) ), I took my Smiths collection (on cassette) to Moscow and had them played in a couple of clubs. A big success! Gotta say I don't find the Smiths depressing at all, some of their songs are just beautiful.
. . . another Smiths and Morrissey fan. I have a claim to fame - I was nearly run over by him once.
WDW, I envy you! ;) You are so right, some of their melodies are just plain beautiful, as is his voice. *sigh*
On second thought, that Gawker article must be satire, as some of you say - nobody seriously in their right mind could think those things! I've said it many times - Jake is beautiful, inside and out. I just have found sites like theirs extremely disrespectful to celebrities, having snarky fun at a celeb's expense, which I don't enjoy, serious or not. Speaking in generalities, ok; singling out an individual, not ok in my book.
Talk to y'all later! :)
Errm ... no sooner said, WDW.
*dies*
I don't think Clare can beat that :)
OT I am really upset about Jose Mourinho leaving Chelsea. Just had to share.
See you later Marina :)
Anouska - just giving you a prod to see how *dead* you are ;) I thought about you when I heard the Chelsea news. We've really got to get Jake over here to see some soccer and cricket...
The mere thought of food is enough to make me feel sick right now, so I can't give this post the attention it deserves right now:( Sorry, WDW :( I'll read it properly when I'm over this bug thing cos I do love to read about Jake's culinary adventures:)
In the meantime, the pics are very welcome ;)
Anouska, I'm in two minds about Jose Mourinho. As an Arsenal fan it's hard not to find the whole thing hilarious but I have to admit I'll miss the arrogant git! His interviews are comedy gold :D And, I feel dirty even thinking this, but he's very sexy in a "I know I shouldn't but I totally would" kind of way;)
And yes, WDW, Jake needs to get down to the Emirates! A pic of Jake in an Arsenal shirt would have me drooling, sighing, swooning, dying...the lot!
That seven layers lasagne got my attention too WDW, and made me laugh to myself because Jake eats more of Italian wonderful cooking than me...;)
But I'm honoured that he visits so many Italian restaurants...come and visit Italy Jake, it's a beatiful sunny September down here...:)
I come back to life when I'm spoken to :)
Yep, WDW, Jake's a medievalist, so where better?
twistedlogic - Jose? Anyone who *wouldn't* needs her head examined :). I see a London football derby looming for Jake, but we'd have to explain wearing the wrong colours = bad idea.
Twisted Logic - I'm so sorry to hear you're still sick and in need of Dr Jake. Do look after yourself.
An Arsenal girl, eh? They seem to be everywhere... Can I put in a word for Spurs? Only kidding ;) I'm a ManU girl. But I prefer the cricket - I like a sport that involves a picnic, a good book and a glass of Pimms - and a deckchair.
Live Anouska I don't think Jake's the only medievalist round here ;)
Hey Xenia - I really did chuckle at the thought of a lasagne with 7 layers. I couldn't manage half of that. Jake clearly likes lasagne so we should all make sure we keep the ingredients to hand, just in case ;)
Excuse me while I scream for having just lost what I was about to post! I'll try to regurgitate it quickly.
First of all, glad to hear that you are a fellow ManU fan,WDW,although I have to confess it's some time since I supported them fanatically (My favourite era being under Tommy Docherty, with the likes of Martin Buchan,Steve Coppell,Stuart Pearson etc,etc...). I still want them to win everything that's going but hardly ever watch a match now.
My love affair with Association football (can't call it soccer,sorry),i.e. PROPER football (ducks incoming projectiles from Stateside!)has waned since it became driven by money and business interests rather than for the love of the game.
What really put the kibosh on it for me was watching an international match on the telly during the "Jarhead" war (just to be slightly on topic, too ;-) ). When something went belly-up for the England team the commentator called it a "real tragedy". I was just struck forcibly what a ridiculous over-exaggeration that was and that the real tragedy was that men, well boys really, the same age as the players and younger, were busy being blown to buggery in "Operation Desert Storm".(sadly being repeated a hundred-fold again now :-(
I could never take any sport quite as seriously again after that (this coming from someone who idolised Martina Navratilova, cried for hours when Arsenal were jammy enough to nick the FA cup from Man U ;-) etc etc).
Mind you,I agree about the civilised pleasure of watching a game of cricket,WDW, and I have seldom seen a more beautiful sight in all professional sport that Imran Khan (former captain of Pakistan and fast bowler) steaming into the wicket and letting go a lightning delivery. Or Mark Ramprakash wielding the bat,or strutting his stuff on "Strictly Come Dancing"! Delish!
Let's hope the glorious Mr.Beckham gets himself fully fit very soon and hits a purple patch of form, thus convincing Jake and millions of other Americans that football still is "The Beautiful Game".
*dies*
*Ascends to a higher plane of existence and becomes omnipotent*
Even in my exalted state I have no contribution to make to a footie conversation. :)
Tee hee! Nice one Clare! :-D
Hi WDW! Thanks for the get well wishes:) It's weird cos I feel perfectly alright apart from the fact I can't eat.But yeah,a visit from Dr Jake would be most welcome!
Nadine, I know what you mean about football (I refuse to call it soccer too) being just a money making machine nowadays, but at least there's a corner of North London where it is still the beautiful game. Arsenal's 3rd goal last night was poetry in motion:) Thierry who?
Btw (just to bring the subject back to Jake) does anyone else find it as annoying as I do when, in TDAT, the guy is watching ManU vs Celtic and the commentator refers to Celtic as the home side when they're clearly wearing their away kit? The whole film lost all its credibility for me right there;)
Hey Nadine - I loved your comment, thanks :) I was such a big Martina, Borg and McEnroe fan, sigh. As for footie, these days I only watch the internationals. So many sports - I'm amazed Jake has time for so many restaurants.
And the prize goes to.... Clare.... *Ascends to a higher plane of existence and becomes omnipotent*
:D
Twisted Logic - hopefully you'll be ready for a big pile of pasta soon. Jaking consumes larg eamounts of calories do you need to keep your energy levels up.
does anyone else find it as annoying as I do when, in TDAT, the guy is watching ManU vs Celtic and the commentator refers to Celtic as the home side when they're clearly wearing their away kit? The whole film lost all its credibility for me right there;)
D'you know, I just didn't notice :D, but did you not think that film had compensations for such a cime?
*acknowledges defeat to Clare*
BUT
*continues to know about football*
There is SO much wrong with the football bits in TDAT. Still love it, though.
Hey Wdw, Jake has far too many clothes on in TDAT for it to even come close to compensating;) I guess I'm just a sad case for noticing the Celtic thing! Anouska is right though, there's so much wrong with that scene, like the guy going "kick it, kick it!" Seriously, who talks like that when they're watching football?
Sorry, I don't mean to be picky, I'm just not a big TDAT fan.
Hi Anouska and Twisted Logic - a TDAT split I see. It's a special one for me as I remember that day back in May 2005 when I saw it for the first time, realised Donnie Darko had grown up and I just fell for him. As for the too many clothes - I find the wetness compensates ;D
