Jake: 'If you put me in mud, you'd see how much fun I could have' [Updated]

If I gave you three guesses who was on the cover of October's edition of Interview Magazine, I think one would do. Yes, Jake Gyllenhaal is the star attraction and, not only is he featured on the cover, but he is interviewed inside the magazine by none other than David Fincher. If any more proof were needed that the 'strange cinematic love affair' (Jake's words, not mine) between these two survived the exhausting process of Zodiac, then this is it.

I have not yet got a copy - being on the wrong side of the Atlantic Ocean - but I have been sent some extracts by a good friend on the right side of the pond who received one at her office yesterday - thank you BKay! So hot off the presses, here are some extracts from the interview:

'You should do this in drag' - 'Fantastic!'

Jake: we're being recorded.
David Fincher: Exactly, so be very careful. By the way, I finally saw your SNL which I thought was awesome- balls-out one of the funniest moments I've seen on that show in a long time.
Jake: Thanks. I figured, if you're going to do it, then really do it.
David: Well, you did it, and now no one ever has to do it again. (Both laugh) Somebody sent it to me on DVD because I missed it and everyone was talking about it. ..
Jake:...They played the song, we practised it a couple times, and Lorne came up to me and said "You should do this in drag. What do you think?" And I was like 'Fantastic!" And that was it.

Rendition: 'This isn't some liberal movie or some conservative movie'

Jake: There's not just one side to the story, this isn't some liberal movie or some conservative movie - it shows both sides pretty clearly. At first my character doesn't really know what's going on one way or the other, but after a while he discovers what's what. At first, even with all this stuff happening, he supports what they're doing because he's in the CIA. But after a while he realizes it just doesn't work. It's not even a question of whether the guy did what he's been accused of or not - you're just not going to get accurate information from somebody when you're torturing them to the point where they'll tell you whatever you want to hear.

'I really want to work though... Let's buckle down and get to it'

Jake: I think there are a lot of people who don't learn how to grow up, so I'm in a place now where I feel like the decisions I make will be really good...
David: So now you're like "I feel confident that I'm in a place in my life where I probably, in all seriousness, would have never met you, David." (laughs).."I'm feeling so good about myself that I would have instantly turned down that last script you sent me."
Jake: Shut up...
David (laughs)..No, I know what you mean...
Jake: I really want to work though. I'm so excited to be in a place where I'm like, "Let's buckle down and get to it"... That's where I find myself, and being antsy to commit 100 percent is a great place to be as an artist. That's where you always want to be...

'Running is a really good antidote for a mind that tends to spin round a lot'

Jake: Well, we were shooting that in the middle of a desert outside of Marrakesh, and I'd go running a lot. I imagine that as a director, when you're filming, every possible second of your time is filled. But as an actor you have so much free time your mind wanders. Running is a really good antidote for a mind that tends to spin around a lot.
David: Yes, and you do tend to obsess a lot, too. This is the idea for me: I don't want to obsess at work. I want to take it home or out into the desert so that while I run I can do, Idiot, why did you say that? (laughs) People try to get me to meditate, and all I do is sit there thinking. You should have started this so much earlier. You have so much meditating to do that you'll never catch up now.
Jake: That's exactly how I think, too. Maybe that's why you and I have this strange cinematic love affair. Did you get my message that I think we should do a Civil War movie together?
David: Yeah. I like that. I know nothing about the Civil War, but every time I see a movie about it, I'm like, Wow, that really happened?
Jake: I thought you'd really be into it.
David: You thought I would appreciate having a group of miserable, blood-covered actors standing knee-deep in mud.
Jake: See, if you put me in mud, you'd see how much fun I could have. But seriously, they did crazy stuff in that way - really dark stuff like engaging in hand-to-hand combat and tearing each other's throats out.
David: But I'm over that kind of stuff. (sarcastically) I want to make stories about love and communication...

So, what do we have?

These little glimpses, from an interview I can't wait to read, reveals a man who can laugh at himself, who has a great deal of affection for his past director (and receives it in return), who runs because he thinks about things too much, and who knows he wants to work and is dedicated to it, 100%. There's also something strangely appealing about Jake acting in a Civil War uniform... Who knows what we'll find in the rest.

I hear that the interview is accompanied by three pages or so of pictures of Jake - in action - including photographs of Jake chopping wood and, I believe, fishing, holding a bicycle and rowing a boat. Unfortunately, I have yet to see these and have only seen a poor version of the cover. Hopefully, they will be online soon. In the meantime, this feature will have to include other gorgeous shots of Jake - a hardship, I know.

If anyone out there can scan the article for me and email it to me, I would be more grateful than I can say. Thanks to BKay again!

Update No 1: Stephanie at I Heart Jake found a better photograph of the issue than I'd seen so, thanks to her, and here it is til we get a better one. Note how Jake's called 'The hottest bachelor in America'!

Update number 2: I have just been told how the article begins:
He's been called everything from brave to focused to just plain obsessive, but for Moviedom's athletically inclined, politically minded man of action, it's 100 percent or nothing. Director David Fincher catches up with the actor whose moment is right now.

Later on...
At 6 feet tall Jake Gyllenhaal is that rare breed of movie star; an actor who's actually bigger in life than he appears onscreen. One reason might be that when Gyllenhaal fills the frame, so much of one's attention is focused on his eyes; another might be that until recently Gyllenhaal's roles called for him to portray boyish figures on the cusp of manhood. In this month's Rendition, however, that youthful, wide-eyed innocence comes face to face with some ugly realities... it may prove the final leap from Indie Heartthrob to leading man, a process he began with 2005's Jarhead and Brokeback Mountain, the latter of which earned him his first Oscar nomination.

Aaaarggh this is agony,WDW!

I'm supposed to be doing some light hoovering etc, while my husband's out DIY'ing for my Auntie. Despite the pangs of guilt I think a quick visit to WDW is "de rigeur" while I've got the chance and what do I find?!... This fabulous new post which I have read once but want to read several times and then comment on immediately, but I can't stay!

Once a few chores are done I've got to get myself ready for an evening at the theatre (nothing challenging, just a critically acclaimed farce, and we all need as much laughter as we can get, don't we!)

So I'll have to wait, perhaps until tomorrow,to read what you've all had to say about this jewel of a post and chip in myself. Must say before I go though,I feel even more empathy with Jake now having read this article. Am I ever guilty of thinking too much and am relieved to be in such exalted company!! Over-analysing is the fastest way to tie yourself in knots,so maybe I should take up running too if Jake finds it so therapeutic...well,I'll do some more brisk walking first and take it from there, feeling like I'm taking every step with Jake towards calming the mental maelstrom!

Isn't it great that he feels so motivated and wants to really get stuck into work, that he has such zest for life in general too?!

But enough...really,I've gotta go! :-( Have a great chinwag folks, see you later...God I hate housework!!!

I just love this post, WDW. I'm glad to see that reports of difficulties between Jake and David Fincher were greatly exaggerated! ;) It was fun to read.

Oh what a great post, WDW!! Fanastic to read Jake interviewed by David Fincher! I love that David complimented Jake on SNL. Can't wait to read the full article and see the pics. Thanks again for sharing this with us. :D

Hi Nadine - I know! Isn't it great! It's hardly surprising you empathise with Jake more, I just can't wait to see the rest of it andthe pictures. The cover shows Jake with the short Toronto hair but before the beard. I hear that in one of the photos inside at least he's in the white t-shirt and jeans.... I'm hoping to get a copy next week.

That's exactly why I run. And it's interesting that David says Jake has an obsessive mind, when I think David's been accused of the same thing ;) But running is a great therapy for it - more than meditation imo.

I was thrilled to see Jake's so committed to work - makes me feel like we (well, me) don't have to worry about there being a whole succession of films over the coming years to enjoy.

Enjoy the farce *)

Hi Marina - thanks :D

Hey Get Real - we were posting at the same time - I know, can't wait to see it. Just hope someone will send me a scan as it'll be a while before I can get one flown over. Great idea though to have David interview Jake - love that.

And thanks so much to my friend for sending over the extracts - I know it wasn't easy.

Can't wait to get to Barnes and Noble and get a copy! Sounds to me like David's gone a little giddy over Jake, or is it just me?
Or is it just Jake? '

Hey WDW this site is really Scoop City! Love ya!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Positively Pia! I think Jake has that affect on people! Needs a heath warning tag.

If you see a copy, I don't suppose you'd get me one?

Anonymous said...

Just call'd Barnes and Noble and they dont expect Interview on their newsstands until end of next week. Mail subscriptions arrive more quickly, I believe. I was biting my nails about the GQ issue when it magically appeared on the table in my dentists office.

I see the subject of "obsession" came up in this interview. :) :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good job Pia - yes, the subscription ones will get their first - the one I was quoting from was an office copy. I'm hoping I'll get my copy next week but I bet I won't :(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Obsession.. don't know what you mean ;) I'm just glad Jake knows all about the meaning of passion!

Anonymous said...

Stephanie at IHJ just posted a picture of the Interview cover! It's somewhat covered by the plastic packaging but Jake looks amazing none the less!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real - that is so spooky! - I just saw that and I've added it to the post here :) It's better than the version I saw and can tied us over. TALK ABOUT HOT!!! Gushing moment... forgive me...

I've now heard that in one of the pics Jake is grasping a bike from behind - one kind of bike I don't know. But it's interesting that all of the shots as far as I've heard seem to focus on Jake's physical strength. Such a contrast to Zodiac and I totally approve.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

^^^ that should be 'what kind of bike' - brain cell death from hotness of pic...

Anonymous said...

LOL, we are of one mind, WDW. ;D Yes, Jake looks fantastic and I am all for him in sporty!Jake picture mode!

Anonymous said...

Note how Jake's called 'The hottest bachelor in America'!

He isn't?? ;-)

Does anybody else even come close?

Anonymous said...

O gosh Im gonna faint. Im so effing pathetic! your updates have got me all giddy again. "This happen a other people? What the hell they do?"

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Get Real - sounds good to me too. And I've just heard, thanks to BKay again, that another picture shows Jake rowing a boat!

Hi Felicia - I wouldn't even narrow it to America... ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pleasantly pertubed Pia - can I direct your attention to my newfound knowledge that Jake is seen rowing a boat!! I don't know why that makes me go particularly squueeeey (homage to Anouska) but it does.

Also he doesn't smile in the photos - it's broody sexiness all the way... :P I know we should focus on the words but maybe when my heartbeat has calmed down a bit :D

Anonymous said...

I think he is the most beautiful, hottest, sexiest, most gloriously delicious man ever born. But what do I know! I can't wait to get my hands on this Interview. My GQ is looking a bit tattered! LOL! As far as movies go, Jake has such a contemporary look to him, I just can't imagine him in anything earlier than 1890's. I guess he could do a Civil War era movie as well as anyone, but I'd love to see him in some contemporary stuff where he dresses modern when he's dressed (!) and has lots of great sex. I guess they had sex during the Civil War, too, but it wasn't highlighted. (LOL!)

Anonymous said...

I think he is the most beautiful, hottest, sexiest, most gloriously delicious man ever born. But what do I know!

Hee. Seems to me you know quite a bit. Well all the important stuff anyway.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Bobbyanna - oh you made me laugh. You're such a great movie expert and now it boils down to wearing contemporary costume and having lots of great sex!!!

Actually, I think that would do me for a Jake role too...;) I'm sure they had sex at some point in the Civil War - it seemed to go on in Gone With the Wind, just not very successfully.

So Brothers could take smouldering sexy Rendition Jake that little bit further - certainly will have te contemporary dress at least ;)

Anonymous said...

Dont want to be a SPOILSPORT (Question: is discussing Danish film spoilery, spilling the beans, etcetc.) but although there would be lots of opportunity for Jake to be sexy and smouldering and playful in Brothers we would also have to witness yet another scene of atrocity. hey bro, can't we do a romantic comedy? has Jake yet "gotten the girl" (or boy, for that matter.) sigh!

Rowing a boat? OMG. biceps. I love his biceps.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Positively pia - ooh not keen on more atrocities in Jake's films after Rendition. I tink I'll focus on the broodiness. Yes I really really want Jake to do a romcom and get the girl or other consensual person :D

Rowing a boat and biceps - sigh :P

Anonymous said...

A musing: Did Fincher take the photos as well as do the interview in Interview???Bcz I was wondering how mant takes he made Jake do for the photoshoot????(!)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Bobbyanna - maybe that's why Jake's not smiling in the pics - he had to row across a lake 68 times! :D

Anonymous said...

bobbyanna and WDW - pretty effing funny, you guys (chanelling Jon Stewart)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia - I feel drunk on Jake this evening - maybe it's time to move onto the red stuff ;)

Anonymous said...

on to the red stuff? well, I have just been accused, on another thread, which remains nameless, of being pissed. honestly!

I "left home" (ref: the Beatles) many years ago to avoid this kind of harrassment -

I am really high though on all of the autumn Jake news - - and from what I have read from snippets WDW the interview sounds like a real hoot. Jake is a live wire, for sure.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

You'll get none of that here pia - this being a virtual reality pub where we can sit and chat about Jake.

I think this interview will show us yet another side of Jake and I just love it :D

Anonymous said...

Jake in mud! I want Jake in mud! When can I have Jake in mud?? huh? Huh? :D

sorry, it's Saturday night, that's as meaningful as I get!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

So I think what you're saying So you're Ruby now is that you want Jake in mud? Well, that would be good as Jake says he'd have a lot of fun in it ;) For the sake of my sanity, I'm desperately trying not to dwell too much on the Jake in mud image - you're not helping...

Hope you're having a good Saturday night!

Anonymous said...

Im sorry but I also WANT JAKE IN MUD. WHY does he say these things that set us off, like this? No wonder Fincher is giddy. Who's not?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I think Jake's well aware of what he does to us when he says these 'throw away' lines. Giddy Fincher - like that :D I think we must do all we can to campaign to get Jake to star in a very muddy film.

Anonymous said...

Hmmmm! "A very muddy film" Im beginning to think DH Lawrence, a remake (oh no! no remaies! no more Jane Austin! etcetc) of women in love, the two guys wrestling. Well then how about Lady Chatterly's Lover, I dont think that's been done. Sons and Lovers, follow up to Brother?

Just thinkin'

Anonymous said...

So I think what you're saying So you're Ruby now is that you want Jake in mud?

I think that was what I was hinting at yes. I like Pia's idea of the wrestling too. remember that Duran Duran, Girls on Film video? :D We need a boy version.

I feel better about my Jake/BBM passion, now that I know Jake is also obsessive!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

It's getting a litle warm in here now Pia and I think that's Ruby.

It is warming to know that Jake understands all about passion and obsession - I loved that bit, that others see it in him and he sees it too.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone -

definitely reeling and upset from the actions of Jake Watch today :( Today has been so good, I'm going to try not to let thei actions spoil it.

Don't let JW get you down -- copying, like imitation, is a form of flattery, right? At least she admits she stole it -- in her own bizarre way. What is that girl on, anyway?

Anonymous said...

Great post, by the way, WDW. All these wonderful things you find make me adore this amazing man more and more each day.

Anonymous said...

Squeeee! I can't wait to get hold of this magazine either. The more I read about Jake, the more fascinating he becomes. I've enjoyed a lot of Jake's younger roles, but I love grown-up Jake, his grown-up roles and more yet to be. Although Brokeback Mountain will always be a favorite of mine.

I saw the Rendition trailer again today at the movies. I had to do the silent squee! so as not to make my husband roll his eyes. :)

I also saw the trailer for Ang Lee's Lust, Caution which looks absolutely magnificent.

I saw today Eastern Promises with Naomi Watts and Viggo Mortensen. Viggo is just incredible in his role, is all I can say. The entire film is engrossing and just mesmerizing. I only wish it had been longer. :)

Anonymous said...

she admitted it no she did not admit it that gin swigging lil slut I adore her, but she did not "admit it", she denied it - albeit with a twist - a lemon, right? - sorry BPB, your "irony" doesnt always play out on the page, as sis Maggie said once to Jake.

Anonymous said...

my point being: I think folks need to call BPB on this one: -

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thank you Beckela - whatever she's on I want no part of it. I was brought up with manners and am upset, BUT this is a great interview and I want to enjoy this sexy, hot Jake :D Thanks!

Marina - you saw the trailer!! I'm so excited for you :D That's wonderful. And it's so good - but not long now. None of these films have arrived in the UK yet, there's nothing on here at all now except for Atonement. I'll see Lust, Caution - although I fear it will involve a trek - and Eastern Promises. I had a drink with some Viggo fans in Toronto and saw some members of the cast but I didn't recognise them. So many good movies to see the year out - especially one.... ;D

Sounds like you had a good day :)

Thanks Positively Pia - I think!

So Brothers could take smouldering sexy Rendition Jake that little bit further...

No sex for Jake in Brothers -unless they change the script.

Hey WDW and all you guys!!! It's a grey and stormy morning this side of the globe. I had read this beautiful post last night and I was dancing around in excitement and hoping to come back and comment in the morning.

The hours that intervened seem to have brought their own horrors. WDW do not let envious people upset you. We will all be there for you and WDW will soar.
Hugs to you

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Incognita - so good to see you! And thanks, things are fine now - I've cooled off and focusing on what matters - Jake in Mud.

I hope your storms scatter likewise *)

I can't stand this site -- it takes forever to read the multitude of overwhelmingly thoughtful responses. And the blog itself is just so damn original and perfectly written that it leads me to believe that I'm having hallucinations and blackouts -- there's no way I'm online, in the worldwideweb, on a site that is so refreshingly honest, upstanding, and gives credit where credit is due.

This latest feature was particularly frustrating.

THANK YOU!!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Wow Gho - what a comment! Thanks so much! You've made my night friend :D

I'm making an exception to my decision to not actively participate in Jake related posting just to chime in with my support for you, WDW. Even though I don't post here any longer, I do still enjoy lurking..... and it's all due to your intelligent, entertaining and substantive posts. I appreciate your dedication.... this is where I get my Jake news!

Anonymous said...

My apologies for my absense these few days WDW. I never get to spend the time and post here as much as I would SO much like, there never seems enough time. You are my #1 Jake fix!

Also, sorry for my late response but WDW, I too want you to know how much I support you and WDW, and how it was unfortunate to hear about the Jake Watch situation. I'm just saying but, I gather if the shoe would have been on the other foot sort of speak, and a blogger would have not credited Jake Watch....they wouldn't have maybe taken it well either. I'm sorry that situation happened.

David Fincher interviewing Jake was absolutely AMAZING! I find it makes it even more interesting when a director or co-star that Jake worked with does the interview (just like the one with Jake and Susan Sarandon). I myself, like Jake, over think things, and over analyze way too much as well.

Jake in mud....yes please, LOL! Perhaps similair to a certain scene a la Viggo in Eastern Promises....that's all I'll say, LOL! No one heard me say that though right?!

Anonymous said...

I just want to say I support you and your splendid blog, WDW. I 'm glad you aren't letting a bump in the road "derail" you! You just keep chugging along with you insightful, newsy blog. What you provide us with is topical and interesting. It gets us to think and discuss things from many different persectives. You've created a very comfy spot to visit!
BTW: Ultra Violet has posted some scans of pthe photo spread in Interview Magazine, on DC Forum. Jake looks....delicious. And honestly, that picture of him "chopping wood?" Looks like his jeans were painted on.

Anonymous said...

Just checked out the photo scans from Interview Magazine and....WOW! It shows on the front cover, that now we know it wasen't David who took the pics of Jake for the interview. Wonder where these outdoor pics were taken?

Bobbyanna, my fav pic is the chopping wood one too.

Hi, I am pondering how much I should embarrass myself in front of my colleague who is in he USA right now... Should I ask him to try to pick up this magazine for me? Hm... Do you think they will have it at Detroit Airport? They should, huh?
I asked him for other stuff already - and unfortunately he is not dumb... If he puts one and one together he might realize that I am obsessed with a, errrr, make that "passionate about a" certain J.G...

The fact that David Fincher did the interview makes me happy!!!

Oh, and speaking of Jake in mud!!! We had that already! Remember BubbleBoy? Okay, no mud on skin there, but still...

And the JW thing? Hm, I don't really know what to think about that... :-/ I don't understand why BPB was heading for confrontation right from the start of her post :-/
I enjoy both your sites - they serve different "purposes" for me. I hope this will not end up in a stupid war kind of thing... That would be very sad.
I am glad to see, that you "cooled off" in the meantime.

Ruby said...

WDW, you know we love you. This is the only Jake blog I comment on or even read regularly. However much they throw out the 'irony' and 'joking' defense, JW could easily have avoided the hurt to you and the resulting unpleasant discussion in their own comments. Instead, they chose to wound.

As for the pictures in that magazine, I'm typing from the floor here, having slid off my chair!!

The thing I can't understand, is why would Jake want to make another movie with David Fincher, when DF drove him batty the first time they worked together?! Wallowing in the mud for endless takes all day and all night for David Fincher? Why???

Thanks for these excerpts WDW, they are very fascinating and informative! :-) I did not know that Jake was obsessive, until now. I had to re-read that bit a couple of times, I thought it was DF who was the obsessive one?

Don't forget WDW, if you need any research info, come to me!

Morning everyone! Late start this morning due to a late night.

Birdie - thanks so much for breaking your rule to post. I've missed you and it's good to hear from you. It's good to know you're still around the site :)

Hey Jantoinette - I think it's a great idea too - we all know how responsive Jake can be when he likes the interviewer. I wonder whose idea it was that it be Fincher? Very interesting and I'd say a good choice. I enjoyed the Susan Sarandon interview too.

Thanks Bobbyanna - I woke up to that link. I haven't yet digested the photos - I find them overwhelming, so different, but I don't think I've ever found Jake (in photographs) sexier. The chopping wood was is exceptionally beautiful.

Hi Uli - go on and embarrass yourself. You know you have to have a copy... I'm not interested in any kind of 'war' with JW, there is room in the fandom for all, so don't worry about that.

Thanks to you and Ruby for the reminder of Muddy Bubble Boy - lovely as he is, it's just not quite what I have in mind ;)

Hi q o n - thanks for commenting :) If these are taken by Vanity Fair photographers then that would explain something - they're stunning. I wonder how it works - who says 'Jake, we want you in a boat' etc.

Thanks Welliwont and I know where to come! I think Jake must have got along with David much better than rumour and tradition would have it, although I think Jake is saying here that it can be boring for an actor whereas the director is always occupied. The two roles have such completely different perspectives and I'm sure they have clashed. But friendship appears to have come out of it. The chemistry at Cannes seemed true enough.

Considering the quality of Zodiac, both in terms of direction and acting, I could definitely cope with another Fincher-Gyllenhaal liaison, if Jake could!

Anonymous said...

"However much they throw out the 'irony' and 'joking' defense, JW could easily have avoided the hurt to you and the resulting unpleasant discussion in their own comments. Instead, they chose to wound."

Unfortunately, Ruby, I have to agree with you. I don't accept that "defense." I don't think it's the first time they've used it either.

So. Moving onward:
On the photo spread, I wonder if the photographer has his own website. Stephanie at IHJ, mentioned they were waiting for the photo spread to turn up somehow. Squeeeee! There are probably additional pictures that didn't get used bcz of space limmits!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Bobbyanna *) I really do hope the photoshoot turns up. I'm sure many were taken and I'd love to see any of them.
