We have a project! Jake and Tobey to be Brothers

It seems that Jake Gyllenhaal has had enough of some of us endlessly ruminating about how he is going to fill his winter months. Variety has indicated that Jake is shortly to begin filming Brothers with Tobey Maguire. No doubt this will further confound those who continue to muddle up Jake and Tobey, for reasons I've never understood, but this is good news indeed. And it must be true - it's in the Guardian.

Variety: 'Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal are in negotiations to star in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" for Relativity Media. The film, a remake of Susanne Bier's Danish-language war drama, centers on a man (Maguire) who is sent to fight in Afghanistan while his black-sheep brother (Gyllenhaal) cares for his wife and child. Bier's film, which was released in 2004, stars Connie Nielsen, Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas.In the remake, which David Benioff is writing, Gyllenhaal would play the younger brother and Maguire the older one.
"Brothers" is scheduled to begin shooting in early November. Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh is producing alongside Michael De Luca and Joni Sighvatsson. Relativity most recently produced the Russell Crowe-Christian Bale starrer "3:10 to Yuma," which recently opened at No. 1.'

The Guardian: 'Brothers is a remake of a Danish movie of the same name describing how the relationship between two brothers, Michael and Jannik, is forever changed when one of them comes back traumatised from the war in Afghanistan. Before he left for war, Michael had his life "in order", with a successful military career, a wife and two daughters. When he leaves for Asia, his black sheep brother, Jannik, starts caring for his sister-in-law and nieces, becoming increasingly close to his brother's family. This balance is overthrown when Michael returns home with post-traumatic stress disorder. In the remake, Maguire is in line to portray the soldier-brother while Gyllenhaal could be cast as his caring younger sibling. Filming on Brothers is to begin in November.'

So what in this doesn't sound good? Just about nothing. Jake as a caring black-sheep brother? Perfect. Jim Sheridan is a fine director - just ask Daniel Day-Lewis and take a look at My Left Foot and In The Name of the Father. This project also echoes Rendition last year, which similarly seemed to appear out of the blue and was soon underway. I'm off to celebrate.

I like the sound of this project - a 'black sheep' but caring with it! :D

I actually do see the similarity in younger Jake and Toby, but they are very different now that they have both matured. I can see them playing brothers, that would work for me. :)

Feel better soon WDW.

Hi Clare - welcome and thanks for commenting! I've never seen the similarity myself, but it amuses me when Jake recounts that people have confused him with Spider-Man and congratulated him on the role. But I can see Jake and Tobey playing brothers, definitely, it would work for me too. I just like the sound of Jake and Tobey working together too (I wonder who'd get top billing....).

I already feel a bit better due to this news - thanks!

Now that I don't get. They aren't that alike!! It's more a similarity of subtle smile at some times, for me! ;D

Although the thought of Jake-as-Spiderman did get me through the over-long No.3 movie by imagining Jake in the role (not that I ever wanted him to play Spiderman but you know what I mean, thoughts of J and of BBM have got me through a few boring movies).

I saw 3.10 to Yuma on Sunday btw. For a blokey western it was pretty absorbing. But then I like Christian Bale. :)

hmmm the billing would be interesting to see. Depends who has the most aggressive agent!! :D

I'm afraid to say that I fell asleep during Spider-Man 3 and woke up during the closing credits. That's weird as I never fall asleep at the movies, the only other time was in Spider-Man 2 - that's true! I should go and see these films during the afternoon, clearly. I like Christian Bale too but I've not seen that film yet.

Battle of the agents, hmmm :) Thanks for coming back, Clare :D

Gahhhh! I hope this is true and they finalize. Sheridan would be a good director for Jake to work with. And I remember seeing the Danish film a while ago. Anyone who is interested could probably rent it, I think. I have fingers and toes crossed. Eyes, too!LOL!
(BTW: Never got why people would get the two mixed up! Toby has a soft voice similar to Jake, but there is no remeblance otherwise. Nada. They could pass for relatives, I guess, but then so could Jake and Jared Leto...who's about six feet shorter.)

Hey Bobbyanna - I have this image of you siting there cross-eyed, all for Jake! This rumour has to have some credence to it, especially as the project seems to have a schedule and it's in relatively reputable sources (still not forgiven Variety for its Rendition review ;) ) This was how we found out about Rendition too, just before filming began.

Ooh this sounds good!! Thanks WDW :) (Hope you're feeling better btw. I'm feeling like crap today too but this has cheered me up :) Jake as a black sheep cosying up to his brother's missus...I like the sound of that!
Not to put a dampener on things though, but even the Guardian doesn't actually say it's definite so maybe we shouldn't get too carried away just yet. It's hard not to though - Bad Boy Jake!! *drool*

What can I say? I'd be very very happy if this could be true...

I loved 'In the name of the father' and Daniel Day Lewis in it!

Please, Jake, let it be true, would you, Jake? :)

Twisted Logic - sorry, you're no good either :( Feel better soon.

As far as confirmation goes I think this is as good as it gets. I love the whole premise of it too. And it's set in the present day too, all to the good (thinking hair/clothes here, serious stuff like that).

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Xenia - let us hope! I do love Daniel Day-Lewis incidentally.

Thanks for the reassurance WDW :) So, if they start filming in Nov we're probably in for a year or so of waiting which isn't too bad I suppose...We'll have Rendition to keep us busy in the meantime :)

I have to confess to a soft spot for Daniel Day Lewis too - actually with the lack of news about Jake lately I was worried he too had decided to take some time out and go and be a shoemaker in Italy or something! I can't tell you how happy I am that's not the case :)

I was a bit worried too Twisted Logic - but I did keep telling myself that Rendition appeared so quickly on the horizon. That was out in a little under a year. one would have thought this one may be aiming for the same time of year.

Jake cobbling shoes in Italy! OMG Jake on the Via Venetto! Jake in a monastery, like Leonard Cohen, OMG to die for! With webcam 24/7 of course. Sigh!

In the meantime, okay, I'll settle for another flic. :) :) :)

I was late checking my Google Jake-alerts today, but one of the links also broke news of this project. "I wonder if WDW has heard about this?" I asked myself, intending to whip off an e-mail (sorry,WDW,whips and Jake again)if it was news to you.
I should have known that our ever-realiable "Super-Scoop" would have all the gen posted already, and I'm just a "Pooper-scoop" who's slow off the blocks ;-)

However,I am delighted to hear this news! My only reservation is that I could see Jake having more to get his teeth into playing the returning soldier brother, with PSD,confronted by bad-boy brother teetering on the brink of an affair with his wife.

Bad boy is good too, though and I'm sure either would be a fabulous role that he'd pull off magnificently should the project go ahead.

Before I came here,I Googled "Brothers Danish Film" to find out more about the original and a couple of the reviews I found that way suggest that the Danish language version was very emotional,an excellent story brilliantly played,so my appetite for Jake in one of the roles is considerably whetted!

I've occasionally glimpsed a vague and fleeting facial resemblance between Jake and Toby,so the fraternal scenario would be believable. However in the charisma, charm, intrigue, personality and general "phwooaarr get-your-kit-off!" stakes, Jake wins by a million miles.

Talking of "Phwoar factor",Daniel Day-Lewis,a really fine actor, is certainly no slouch either. I wept at "My Left Foot" and laughed, wept and salivated copiously at "My Beautiful Launderette"!

Anyway, thanks for this "pretty close to confirmation" of this project, WDW! Got more errands to run for my folks now, so this Tail-End Charlie will have to catch up with yesterday's post later! You are so fantastic at keeping us up to the minute with Jake news,WDW, and it's great that there's so much of it about lately!

Hasta la vista,lovely people!

Actually, Pia, when you put it like that, I could totally live with Jake taking an Italian sabbatical (complete with webcam, of course!)

I see what you mean Nadine, but I think this could be one of those ambigious, conflicted characters that Jake does so well -not all good, but not all bad either. His heart pulling him in different directions - loyalty to the brother in the face of feelings for the wife and daughters. Sounds interesting.

Oh and this sounds like a short-haired role to me. ;)

The Danish "Brothers" goes to the head of my netflix Q -

Xenia said...

Also I had a thing for Daniel Day Lewis, a great actor and a very classy and charming man (physically different from Jake though).
And Nadine, I remember Stephen Frear's My Beatiful Laundrette very well...Daniel Day Lewis in an almost punk hairdo playing an Asian laundromat owner's lover...here's another actor who likes challenging roles...

And as a proud Italian Gyllenhaalic, I'd LOVE to welcome Jake here in Italy and in my home if he wants, to spend a sabbatical contemplative year so he could eat all the CILANTRO FREE Italian cooking he likes untill he feels sick, and a lot more...;)

Thanks for the wonderful news, WDW!
This new film sounds like a great role for Jake.

Me, too, pia - the original Danish film just went to the top of my Netflix queue. :-)

Roger Ebert said of this original "Brothers": "This is the kind of movie that doesn't solve everything at the end -- that observes some situations are capable not of solution but only of accommodation." .

Hmmm...sounds like an "unresolved cadence" to me. :-)

You're right,Clare, there would be quite some turmoil and hidden depths for Jake to plumb in the "black sheep" role too. Let's hope, whichever role he might be offered, that this project comes to fruition!

And yes,we have great taste in men, don't we??!! ;-)

Hi everyone! What's all this about Jake gallivanting around Italy :D Jake in a monastery? Surely no :( Thanks for the chuckles - they've done the trick today.

Hi Nadine - I don't know if I've ever been called a 'Super-Scoop' before - it has a ring to it, although I'm not quite sure I'm liking the images it's putting in my head ;)

I don't want Jake to play the soldier as I want no more militay haircuts.

I loved My Beautiful Launderette and around that time I saw Daniel in theatre a couple of times too.

Hi Clare - you like short haired Jake too, then. Would that be because you don't care for product ;)

Hey Xenia - I wouldn't mind some of that cooking myself! Yes, I loved that film too - I always liked the fish tank :)

Hi Neely - another film without a final resolution - Jake's going to be an expert in these. I'm looking forward to hearing what you and Pia think about the original film when you've seen it.

Nadine - I think it's fair to say that good taste in men is something we ALL have in common here :D

Yet another great surprise to come home to - Jake in a Red Sox cap. Just imagine turing on your computer, bring up the website and that's the first thing you see! It's fabulous, thank you WDW. Great news about Jake and Tobey's new project Brothers. I used to see a resemblance when Jake and Tobey were younger as well, but not so much now. I love Tobey as an actor. I've always loved Daniel Day-Lewis too, in everything I've seen him in. Glad you're feeling better, WDW. Great news today! :)

Hi WDW...thanks for posting this delicious news. This sounds like a fabulous movie for Jake. I am thrilled he is going to be the younger brother...in hopes that he will be clean shaven..and even more gorgeous...I saw this announced earlier in the day..and just knew you would be on top of it!! AND btw..I am with you..I cannot see how anyone can mix up Tobey and Jake...I never have. Thanks again for the posting....Michele

Hi Marina - it's been such a great day. The first thing I saw online todaw was the news of Brothers and then the new pics - just a great boost. It sounds a marvellous project and I can see why Jake would want to do it. We are very lucky :D I love where Jake's roles lead us.

Hey Michele! I've never seen why people confuse Jake or Tobey either but they do. But how great to have two such good actors playing brothers. The more I think about it, the better the whole project sounds.
