Jake: 'Do you want to smell it?' and Rendition makes waves

I thought that when I saw Jake Gyllenhaal's mimicry of the Drunken Woman exclaiming 'I swear to God you look like Jake Gooberballs!', I couldn't laugh longer and harder. But that was not reckoning with the power that is Comic Jake. I have just seen Conan O'Brien's show and Jake's 'Oh my God! Oh my God!' while swirling his arms round like some insane windmill, in imitation of his friend trying to catch a ball heading kind of roughly towards him but not really in the Monster Seats, made me roar with laughter. So much so I had to play it down the phone to a friend (sorry about that).

And then there was the Japanese moment, not to mention Jake asking Conan 'Do you want to smell it?'. At which Conan did indeed get a sniff of the famous 'Jake Gyllenhaal Beard Effect'. Jake needs a comedy - Japan's not the only nation to have seen the light. And then there's the Gnarls Crazy moment! A comic musical, then.

Thanks again to IHJ for downloading Conan for us all to enjoy. And now we know, Jake IS a Red Sox fan - the Yankees cap was a bluff.

There is more to come - a preview clip from Ellen shows that we can expect to see Jake in the kitchen rustling up something so good for Ellen that she asks him to marry her. For me, the pinny would have been enough, the food is an optional extra. Tonight of course (in the US, and tomorrow in the UK) is the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Jake may no longer be in the UK but he's left some good stuff behind - Jake is interviwed on ITV's This Morning tomorrow morning and again on the ITV breakfast sow GMTV on Friday.

The interest in Jake's single status or otherwise isn't confined to talk show hosts; in this video, Jake gets a bit of a quizzing outside the studio. His response is to pull one of those Gyllenfaces...

Rendition rings true

Hot on the heels of Jonathan Ross' superb review of Rendition, as well as Amnesty International's endorsement of Rendition as a film that tells a tale that requires telling, is an article in which a Guantanamo lawyer discusses how Rendition rings true for him. The British lawyer describes how terrible and very real extraordinary rendition really is for the victim: "He'll spend the rest of his life in therapy, and he'll have nightmares every night for the rest of his life."

Rendition voted 'best narrative feature'

Meanwhile, Calfornia's Mill Valley Film Festival just ended, having 'tallied 89 sold-out shows during its 11-day run, with attendance rising 12% this year to approximately 40,000.' The audience voted Rendition as best narrative feature. One of the visitors to the festival was Ang Lee, for whom the festival has become a favourite since he presented his 1991 debut feature there. This time, Ang came with Lust, Caution.

Peter and Maggie

Peter Sarsgaard was quoted in the NY Magazine today as saying of the Rendition script: "When I first read it, I was like, oh my God, every scene is going to be like what I always call the 'dead-baby' scene. It's going to be, the baby's dead, the baby's dead, the baby's dead. I need the 'I'd like cream in my coffee scene,' the 'No, that's my parking spot scene.'"

Meanwhile, Maggie was featured in the New York Daily News today for her appearance at NYC's Acorn toy store on Atlantic Avenue, as part of a project to raise money for school libraries while encouraging children to read.

Thanks as ever WDW (and Stephanie) :) Loved the Conan interview, especially the OMG!!! bit:D I think that's exactly what I would be like if I saw Jake coming towards me! And I liked how he and Conan joked about putting it on YouTube, like JR with the swimming:D Jake's certainly been on top form this week hasn't he? I can't think of any comedian that's made me laugh so much as Jake has over the last few days! And then he can just switch to talking so articulately about the film. there's so many sides we're seeing to him atm and I love every single one. I did spot what looked like a lighter patch on the beard but it's hard to tell watching on the computer.I suppose I'll have to trawl through all the stills now;)

I can't wait to see Jon Stewart tomorrow and Ellen too. Btw, I have to say I would happily marry Jake even if he couldn't cook worth a damn;)

What a Jake Week it's been so far and we're not finished yet by a long way!

Hi Twisted Logic - go on get the Interview eyes back for your avatar - gorgeous ...

I truly laughed outloud at this one - Jake was hysterical. I hope anyone who should is taking note of this. Yep, even if all he could cook were beans.

Oh be still my beating heart - I don't know if I have ever seen a sexier Jake - biceps in a t-shirt and apron, cooking. Oh man. I am not going to miss Ellen. I love in the clip when she says "Marry me." lol Don't they have the best rapport - I love when he's on her show. I wonder if he made risotto? I thought he was great on Conan too - and don't forget the Jon Stewart show tonight! I finally got a chance to watch Regis & Kelly and he was great on that too. ;)

Hi Marina - it's very possible that Jake in a pinny will finish me off :\ Ellen and Jake are always so good together and I can't wait. I'm also looking forward to Jon Stewart - I really did njoy their Zodiac interview but it was way too brief - hopefully this one will be longer.

Great stuff as always, WDW! ;) Jake was very cute on Conan and has done great interviews this whole week. It really has been like a kid in a candy store with all these interviews, etc. Thanks for the Peter and Maggie info. Always appreciate hearing about them. Btw, do you have a link to the Peter quote?

I have to say I find the person, who seems like a pap, yelling at Jake about Reese and who he is dating in that video really annoying and intrusive. ;/

On to Jon Stewart, who I adore, tonight!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Get Real - sorry about the missing link - I was sure I'd added it. It's in now. I agre about the idiot in the video - Jake knows how to handle it though and comes out of it looking dignified, unlike the moron who called out. Like when I was in Toronto and heard people call out to Jake 'Where's Heath?'.

Enjoy Jon Stewart :D I can't wait to see that in the morning, IHJ willing!

WDW,
Thanks for this wonderful, marvelous, exciting, makes me smile all night Jake coverage:)
I can't wait to see Jake cooking tomorrow morning on Ellen. The clip I saw of him holding the pan on Ellen is SO totally hot. I all ways did love a man who cooks. Good lord, what else can this emerging Renaissance man do? ;)
We were sisters in laughter watching Jake on Conan. I can't believe how much he can make me LMAO. He is a damned funny dude.

Thanks for a great news-packed post,WDW.

Jake and Conan really seem to spark each other off, don't they? Such a funny interview,Jake was on top form. I howled at him camping it up,taking the piss out of his mate's fanatical antics at the Redsox game, and the little Japanese Gyllen-giggles were just too cute!

I love how Jake conveys just as much with his fascinating and amusing array of facial expressions and extravagant hand gestures as he does with what he has to say.

Just hopping back a post,on the greying beard subject,I'm sure Jake himself pointed out in one of the interviews this week that there is a little grey in his beard,I'm just not sure in which show it was. Oh deary me,maybe that means I'll have to watch them all over again to find out. Such hardship ;-)

I've been deprived of the Ellen clip thus far because for the second night running it's crashed my pooter. It's all part of her wicked plan to keep Jake all to herself. I mean she's already got the beautiful Portia, what more does she want?! Someone mentioned Jake having a pinny,T-shirt and biceps combo going on. Ye gods,I've come over all faint...

It's so good that "Rendition" is getting the seal of approval from people who really know the score as to the human and political realities of the phenomenon. Jake may well have chosen to take this part,as with so many of his other roles, because there is a compelling human story at its core, but I'm sure he must also be proud of the stir it's causing and the debate it's provoking even before it's out on general release!

((((Ang Lee)))) !!

I couldn't agree more about how loathsome and ludicrous that numbskull is who was yelling out questions about Reese and relationships as Jake was trying to talk to genuine fans. I wonder if these twonks are naturally obnoxious or do they have to get up early to practice?!

Thanks for the link, WDW! Btw, I meant my last emoticon to be :/, not the winking one, lol.

Twistedlogic, your new avatar is so sensuous. Jake's back...mmmm. Loved your other one though too. :D

Nadine, I agree that it is wonderful that Ang Lee was one of the people that awarded Rendition. Gotta love Ang. Also, Lust, Caution is a beautiful movie. I highly recommend it.

Hi Twisted Logic - go on get the Interview eyes back for your avatar
Your wish is my command;) And before you ask, no I'm sorry, I can't get Jake to pop round and rustle up some beans on toast for you;( I would if I could, though:) After I'd finished with him of course (so you'd be waiting a long time!)

I love how Jake conveys just as much with his fascinating and amusing array of facial expressions and extravagant hand gestures as he does with what he has to say

Nadine, you're so right. I've been cracking up just looking at the stills from the interviews!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Sass - there is something very appealing about Jake in the Kitchen - I cannot wait...

We were sisters in laughter watching Jake on Conan. - I've just been watching it again just a few moments ago and I haven't laughed so much in a long time :D

Hi Nadine - sorry to hear Chef Jake crashes your computer. I'm not surprised though. He must send a bolt of electricity through its circuits.

Watching Conan again I was struck by how relaxed and very animated Jake was - all this 'swear to God' business, directed at the audience and Conan - really engaging with the audience. And just hysterical. I love the Red Sox section and that Japanese Gyllengiggle...

Without doubt , Jake has good reason to be proud of Rendition. When he took it on, Jake must have know that it wasn't for everybody but he believed in it. It's so great to see all of the stars out publicising it, even Meryl. But Jake is doing an incredible job of promoting Rendition simply by being himself - irresistable. What an asset!

Lol, Get Real! we were posting at the same time. I'll have to change my avatar everytime I post;D You can't please all of the people all of the time, I suppose!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real - you can wink at me all you want! ;) Yes, we have to love Ang - it may be my wishful thinking but I'm always going to celebrate the connection between Jake and Heath and Ang.

Twisted Logic - thanks for restoring that absolutely deliciously sexy avie!

I've really been enjoying Jake's voice in these interviews too. Soft, expressive and occasionally extremely high! So funny :D I'll see you in the morning for This Morning! At least I'll get a bit of a liein :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

We're all posting at the same time :) I love that avatar!

huh. lost my post. WDW,I was told you were unavailable. on the phone or in the loo?

try again.

I LOVE how Jake is giving a little bit of everything to everybody, as he says he likes to do. offering to take off his trousers on the Ellen show! and yes gosh a guy in an apron is to die for. for years I lusted after a tall beautiful Japanese who ran a nearby restaraunt. But Jake! - paradise anon! and then - letting people SNIFF him - another "to die for" occasion. this time around he's really layin' it on thick - and all so cool!

He's doing a wonderful job - has there ever been before such a man?

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDw! yes, Jake's voice is like honey, isn't it? Actually I hate honey, but you know what I mean;)

Off to bed now, after a quick Jake fix. I'm torn between JR and a little bit of Brokeback after looking at the SNIT pic. It sometimes takes me longer to decide which Jake treat to watch than it does to actually watch it!

Goodnight everyone! And WDW,I'll speak to you in the morning:)

TwistedLogic, I LOVE the Interview!Face avi, that face so beautiful. Any avi of Jake you use is all good with me. :D

Hey WDW...my first comment in a loooong time...just so busy...and getting ready for a vacation. I marvel at Jake's storytelling talents. He makes so many faces and has so many voices!! It's funny that on Letterman and on Conan that he felt compelled to tell a story with absolutely no prodding from the host. I wonder if he was telling the stories to keep from having to talk about other things...heh heh. Anyway...thanks, as always, for your fabulous postings. Even when I cannot comment, I am a loyal reader. Here's hoping Jake gets a gig for comedy soon...perhaps back on SNL?..one more thing...because I am a sports nut...did you know that the team the Red Sox are playing, the Cleveland Indians play their home games at a field nicknamed.."The Jake"? I am not kidding...I laughed so hard when I found out he is a Sox fan....I do not know if he has attended any games at "The Jake"..but he should... :-)...... MICHELE

Jake Gyllenhaal told that he is unconfortable with being called a sex simbol and hates preachy films.
If he hates all those things why he is doing this kind of films and let the people clean his shoes? It is very easy! There is lot of beautiful and competent actors Hollywood whose don't have this kind of problems. He can go out of this shantytown Hollywood...Live in another country and have contact with people with better level of education. Perhaps he can learn things that he haven't opportunity to learn at home or the bad society of Hollywood. It is the problems of immoral people...They took a dislike to another people because they are selfish...and a group of them is a catastrophe! They try to have advantages and damage everybody.

The Conan interview was the best of the Rendition tour so far...funny and friendly :)

But Jesus Christ Almighty Jake in an apron (or a 'pinny' like you call it), and a tee and those muscles is UMBLELIEVABLY EROTIC!!
Ellen I love you! :)

I've got the feeling that Rendition is gonna be a big deal...the best feeling ever...

OT : Kate I've just sent you an email with my 'plans'...;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone :) A great day - it's bautifully sunny, I'm off work, downloading Jon Stewart, waiting for Jake to be on The Morning (just saw the trailer to it) and I'm seeing Rendition this evening :D

Thanks so much for your comments overnight - sorry I missed you.

Michele - good to see you again! I hope you have a great holiday. A sporting venue called The Jake? They should have called the new Wembley Stadium in London that as well.

Hey Xenia - good morning. I got your email and I've sent you one back :)

Off to watch Jon Stewart! Of course the one problem with Jake being on This Morning is I have to watch the show.

sass said...

Thanks again WDW,
I hope you got my earlier PM. I tried to send you as much of Jon Stewart's show as I could a few hours ago.
What is it about Rendition; some critics rip it to shreds, film festivals give it awards and human rights organizations praise it in news articles? Can I say controversial?

I've got Jon Stewart all downloaded and saved but I'm trying to hold out and watch it on TV tonight instead. Can I wait over 9 hours?! Probably not, I can't stand the wait for This Morning as it is! Only 5 minutes now!

Lol! That was SO funny!!! Jake likes older women!! We are So in there!!! Form an orderly queue;D

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

It's confession time...I love Phil and Fern on this morning, they really make me laugh! And after this morning's show I love Alison Hammond too!

That is one of the funniest interviews with Jake I have EVER seen. She brought out his flirty side and his sense of humour beautifully and it was so sweet to see him slightly wrong-footed by her "full on,in yer face, say what I think" interviewing style.

Quote of the week and understatement of the century from Alison to Jake "You're quite fit in real life, aren't you?!!". Don't think either of them could believe she'd just said that, it was like she was thinking out loud, and she was speaking for all of us I'm sure.

I'm so glad this will get uploaded by our trusty team of WDW and TL so that everyone around the world can see it! It was sufficiently serious to get the theme behind "Rendition" across, with some snippets of footage which I hadn't seen before in among stuff we're all familiar with and paid fitting tribute to "Brokeback" while plugging some of Jake's back catalogue in the "Quick Draw" game.

I am desperate for other people to get to see this,I just hope they find it as plain adorable as I did! Alison, though I'm green with envy, you truly deserved that kiss!

And I'm with you in that queue,TL,elbows at the ready ;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh I'm crying with laughter! What a cheeky mare! And did I see Jake blush when she said that Jake knew where she kept her pens :D So funny. Won't be long and everyone can see it :)

The British interviewers definitely get away with a lot more - and yes Alison definitely deserved that kiss!

Xenia said...

I wanna see this interview, like, NOW!! :)

I can't wait!! And please stop teasing, English ladies!! ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

All right, no more teasing from the English ladies! And I'd better not distract Twisted Logic from her job of uploading!

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Sorry, didn't mean to tease Xenia, I was just loved the interview and laughed at it so much, I wanted to let you all know what a treat awaits you!

No-one will be happier than me when you can all see it for yourselves and join in the fun :-D

Jake was incredible, especially good mood on Stewart. "hot bitch" in reference to Meryl, either he has a really good relationship with her or playing it risky. Love a guy who pushed the envelope.
