Jake in Space! Is Jake going to the moon?

According to Variety, Jake Gyllenhaal is set to: "team with helmer Doug Liman for DreamWorks' "Untitled Moon Project." Action revolves around a private expedition to the moon and the race for lunar colonization. [The] Screenplay was originally penned by Liman and John Hamburg. Author-screenwriter Mark Bowden ("Black Hawk Down") did a complete reconception of the story and will pen the screenplay.

The project marks the return of Alli Shearmur, former Paramount co-president of production, who ankled the studio earlier this year. She will produce alongside Simon Kinberg and Liman.Liman and one-time Universal exec Shearmur developed a strong relationship back when Liman directed "The Bourne Identity" for the studio. Shearmur also worked with Gyllenhaal when she oversaw production on "Zodiac." DreamWorks has targeted the project for the fast track.Gyllenhaal will next shoot the Jim Sheridan-helmed "Brothers" opposite Tobey Maguire. Liman, whose helming credits include "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" and "Swingers," directed the upcoming futuristic "Jumper," which 20th Century Fox will release early next year."

Jake in space! I pray to the heavens this one is true. Variety is as good a source as any so...

Finnally! Star Man Jake got to the moon!! Homer is grown up, he?:)

Seriously. I'm not so keen on space movies(excepted for 2001 Space Odissey maybe)but I'm happy Jake has all these incoming projects...

Wow, great to hear about lots of projects coming up for Jake. I can be patient and continue to wait for Farragut North too. *sigh* :)

Now we know why that blogger was saying Jake would be too busy to do Farragut North. :)

Seriously, I do have reservations, but as usual, I completely trust Jake's judgment.

I don't know why everyone thinks the beard is for Brothers. Since when has it taken more than a few days for Jake to grow a full beard? He's got time. Obviously he just likes it right now. And I'm all for whatever he wants to do with it, personally, as it reminds me of the onus we women feel about shaving our legs. Except legs aren't as sensitive as faces. Grow whatever you want, Jake.

You're probably on top of this already, but just in case: these guys have a much different story about Farragut North. Quote: "My sources tell me contracts are done, and it's now down merely to scheduling an opening night." I hate conflicting information!

Zero-gravity Gyllenhaal? I don't think my heart will stand it!

Hi everyone! First off, just have to say that if this is true - and it being in Variety gives me less reason to doubt it than other other sources - then I will have died and been sent to heaven. Scifi movies are my weakness absolutely and it's a dream for me to even think about Jake in one - a future movie rather than one set in the past for example. Plus, hopefully, a good plot, a good script, some interesting situations, a bit of peril, some romance maybe and some visual wonders (not just Jake) and some philosophy. So you will hear no sense from me for this one and if it does happen, I will be relocating to live in the cinema for its duration.

Deep breathes....

Hey Xenia! Yes! I love this idea of Jake taking Homer's dream that one stage further. I know there are some bad space movies but they can be good - like all films that depends on the script and I have every faith in Jake when it comes to choosing a good script.

Hi Marina - who knows what Jake has planned for the next year or two. He could still be available next Autumn/winter.

Hey Cherita - I trust Jak's judgement too and I like that he wants to explore different genres - what a mix. And I totally agree about the beard. Jake can grow a beard in no time at all and I think he just likes to have a beard in between films when presumably he feels some freedom to look as he wants to look. It will go and, as true as day follows night, it will come back again. I don't mind it myself but I would love to see the clean shaven Jake of the Interview magazine pictures in the talk shows.

Thanks for the link about Farragut - it really is perpelexing and makes me feel that this project is as far off as ever.

Bmg - I couldn't agree more! You and me both :)

I think it's not so much that Jake likes a beard, I think he grows a beard cos he doesn't like to shave. Same results though. :p

Our man on the moon! Yes, I, too, would rather see Jake in the future than in the past.

And how about some physical action - I guess I can HOPE for a naked wrestling scene in Brothers. :) I loved the brief scene in BBMt when Jack and Ennis chase and rassel one another. Jake is wonderful, in motion. (So is Heath Ledger.)

The younger brother in the Danish film has a beard. Just sayin' Im HOPING for it to come off -

Welcome Homer! - great name :) I definitely agree - if you don't need to shave, and you don't like it, then why bother? Mr WDW agrees, the hairy so and so.

Hey Positively Pia - yes! Future Jake, that will allow for something completely new. Naked wrestling action? I feel faint... I get the feeling that they may be playing with the script of the original film and we could get all sorts!

OMG yes! Astronomy has always been one of my passions and only increased more so when I watched Jake in October Sky.

I hope this movie is just as good! Jake + outer space = bliss for a sci-fi geek like myself. Someone pinch me and tell me I'm not dreaming, okay?

I have to say I was quite partial to the shaved look, but the scruff is definitely growing on me.

Lastly...

Jake is wonderful, in motion. (So is Heath Ledger.)
QFT. It is so hard for me to choose between the two of them, but I gotta go with Jake, if only for the fact that his last name is cool.

Naked wrestling action?
Who wouldn't mind that?! Let's take it a step further: gay cowboys in space, lol.

The younger brother in the Danish film was Danish and 40. :)

Why these guys don't know that Nichols and Farragut North were announced to the public in August?

Hi Fourplay - another appreciator of scifi :) Astronomy is one of my passions too and always will be. Fortunately, you don't need to decide between Jake and Heath but as you have - right choice!

Hi Anon - this just backs up what I'm saying that this original film is being reinterpreted and will probably be completely different. So maybe there will be some love interest going on ;)

Welcome Mary - thanks for commenting. I noticed that too - I place less stock on this comment today than on the way saying it was postponed and Nichols gone from it.

This is a tantalising prospect,WDW!
It would be such a departure from anything Jake has done up to now (although with a thematic link to the lovely "October Sky")and the thought of him peeling off a space suit has brought on my palpitations!

I can't claim to be a rabid fan of sci-fi (unless you count TV stuff like "Dr.Who","Torchwood" and "The X-files")but my husband and I were both Apollo Mission Addicts during the Moon-shots of the late sixties and early seventies, hence "Apollo 13" is one of our favourite,much-watched films (can remember lying awake at night as a kid, praying to God to get the astronauts back safely, and the miracle happened).

The lunar colonisation theme of this latest probable project for Jake also pushes the right buttons with me (although that might also have something to do with its resonance with "UFO",the corny Gerry Anderson produced,low-budget sci-fi show on British TV in my teens - it seemed so exciting at the time,I was in love with Commander Straker and fantasised about working on Moon Base!).

Although this new venture might seem a weird trajectory(!)for Jake to take in his career, his judgement has always been dead on when taking on all his past roles,so I'm happy to trust his judgement on this one too.

It's just great to know that he has at least two projects lined up for the near future and sci-fi is probably the natural progression for a bloke who's just out of this world!(Blush - Somebody had to say it!).

Oh and I'm also in the camp who think that Jake often doesn't bother to shave in between jobs because it's a chore and maybe gives him a sore face.

Have to say,I'm really hoping he's clean-shaven for the talk-show marathon on which he's about to embark. I want to see that beautiful face in all its beardless glory!

Well,sci-fi isn't really my cup of tea, but I've been persuaded over lunch today that it's a brilliant idea, so I'm well up for it!:) I;m just really glad that Jake has 3 (if you count Torso)projects lined up now, considering that a few weeks ago there didn't seem to be anything in the pipeline and I for one was getting a bit worried.

Cherita, I take your point about us women and shaving our legs, but if Jake was going to be looking at my legs I would make damn sure I shaved! So I think the least Jake can do is shave his beautiful face when he's showing it to the nation on TV;) Saying that, I'm just so excited about seeing him on JR,beard or no beard, I can't wait!!

This is very exciting - we're huge film goers, and like just about everything, sci-fi, political thrillers, crime dramas, historical dramas, biopics, quirky comedies, foreign and indie films, and romances always, for me. I'm so glad that he's doing such a broad range of films!

I like the idea of a "continuation" of or connection with, October Sky, which I have yet to see. I'm really looking forward to Brothers too.

I'm so excited for you in the UK, with Jake being on the Jonathan Ross show. You'll have to tell us all about it, and Jools Holland, too! I heard he was a guest as well? I need to sign up for BBC America desperately, is JR ever on that? :)

Hey Nadine - tantalising indeed and I'm not going to settle until it's confirmed! I love Torchwood too and Apollo 13 - Contact is one of my favourite films and I've got a real fondness for K-Pax :)

The whole subject of moon colonisation really appeals to me too, and the scope it offers for so many themes (and costumes ;D). If written well it could have real depth to it. And I love the idea of Jake doing something unexpected like this - couldn't be anymore different from Zodiac and Rendition (although it could still be about a lone figure trying to work through dilemmas).

'Out of this world' - perfect!

I'm still betting Jake will have shaved for JR...

hey Twisted Logic - check out the new post :) Yes, it is a brilliant idea so you just have to get used to the idea - it needn't necessarily involve goldfish bowl helmets, although I have no problems with Jake in a space suit (if he needs help getting zipped in or out of it...). If Torso comes to pass, which it could do as I'm sure David would like to work with Jake again, then this just gets better and better - tree very different projects in quick succession and a busy time for us. Fab :D

Hi Marina! Maybe it should be insisted upon that Jake does a movie from every conceivable genre - including an Indiana Jones romp, a swashbuckler, a romcom etc. I definitely like the idea of this almost continuing Homer's story - Jake and Homer have grown up. I'm sure JR will be up somewhere very soon after the screening here :)

I hope JR will be up on YouTube or something too. I'm not familiar with his show. I'd like to get BBC America not strictly for that, (although it would be nice!) but for a lot of other programming too, such as Torchwood, BAFTA's, etc. I did hear that we in the States will be able to see Torchwood soon. :)
