Jake 'loses it' - while we try and keep up with him

Now that Jake's back in the US, presumably in NYC and hopefully having enjoyed a long lie in this Sunday morning before a week of talk shows, it's time to take a deep breath and catch up.

'Jake Gyllenhaal loses it on British TV'

I did find it very amusing to see that the BBC themselves had posted a video on YouTube of Jake getting inspiration for his swim back across the pond by remembering Jonathan Ross' dodgy Unforgiven joke, the one for the history books. Also good to see that the BBC were not the first to get the clip up, having been beaten by our very own Twisted Logic.

It seems that the link doesn't work for everyone - I don't know what the BBC did to protect the clip - so for those for whom it doesn't work, try this.

Jake's interview on the UK's Sky News

It may have been a flying - or swimming - visit, but no doubt it was crammed full of interviews and press, which will come to light through Rendition week. One such interview was with Andrew Wilson for Sky News. Looking very relaxed, Jake discusses why the film Rendition should be seen and argues that the fact that it shows that the practice of rendition goes on is reason enough. 'I pride myself as an American that we have due process. We have the ability to speak our minds, that we have the ability to be who we are - and we get criticised for it - but be honest about it. And that that's something that makes us - and the potential to be extraordinary people. I think by taking these things away, I think we're doing almost exactly what we fear so much.'

Yet again, Jake repeats that he chose to do the movie because of the line 'This is my first torture' - that he 'looked forward to saying it the whole time.' I'm starting to almost believe this was the reason Jake chose to take on the role, in which case, praise be to Kelley Sane the gorgeous scriptwriter for including it!

Other new American interviews recorded on the day of the LA press junket have shown up on YouTube including an interveiw on Entertainment Studios, kindly posted for us all to enjoy by Cherita. The other video is an interview with 'Gino' of WISN. Big thanks are due to Stephanie for her efforts to upload everything to I Heart Jake, so that we can all share in Rendition week, regardless of which side of the pond we find ourselves.

Peter's view of Rendition

With all the excitement surrounding Jake, we shouldn't forget Peter Sarsgaard's role in Rendition, not least because it is a fine performance. His character faces his own dilemmas and also has to make life-changing decisions, just as Douglas must. This is what Peter told ABC News: 'It's not really only about rendition, in my mind. It's also about this struggle that we're going through as a country, where we're trying to balance personal freedoms with the safety of our society. And it is a balancing act, but I think this is a case of us having gone way too far.'

There are other ways to be a superhero

A few days ago, an article appeared in which Jake showed that he has once and for all put all thought of superheroes behind him, albeit it possibly reluctantly. This makes it extremely unlikely that we will ever see Jake as a Wonder Twin with Maggie in the Justice League - however appealing it may be to have seen Spandex Jake transform into ice objects and weather patterns. This picture below is as close to Jake as a spider-man that I can find..

“I have definitely wanted to play superheroes in the past,” Gyllenhaal confessed, revealing that he’s sat through more than a few casting calls. “I’ve definitely been into [playing a comic-book character] but, for one reason or another, it hasn’t ever worked out.” ...- and now he’s at the point where he’d rather play a real-life superman. “I think what I’ve resigned myself to is [thinking about] the world we live in,” he explained. “I think of how a character, in reality, is like a superhero - rather than actually being a superhero.”... “I’d love to play a really cool character like Jason Bourne,” he gushed. “Not necessarily a superhero, but definitely a cool character that does great, fun [real-world] action.”

Speaking for myself, I hope indeed that one day we may see Jake dominating the big screen as an action hero - not one modelled on the incredible Jason Bourne - but as a character that Jake can make unique and his own.

That first video you linked referencing Jake swimming doesn't seem to be working.

However, I did find another one this morning, not posted by the BBC, here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLWSFyODjPQ

God how he makes me laugh. :-D

Hi Felicia - the link is working fine for me and so hopefully it will for most people.

Thanks for the other link :)

taking a deep breath along with you WDW. Need a few drops of Bach Flower Rescue Remedy in my glass of water to settle down.

The link you provided didnt work for me, either WDW, but felicia's did.

Thanks Positively Pia - I'm trying to calm down - the Shiraz and your friendly voice is helping :)

If it's not working for you either I'm beginning to wonder if they've rigged it so it only works in the UK. It does have some strange coding in it. If so I apologise to those who can't see it and I'll add the extra link to the post.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Pia I deleted the nasty post because it made me feel too depressed to see it here... it had no place here :( Intolerance is something that doesn't belong on a site dedicated to Jake.

Hi WDW:)
My happy face stems from this most incredible weekend. My thanks to you and TL. I'm taking my time today, going back to Friday, enjoying all posts pictures and opinions.
Jake's line"this is my first torture" is very effective, if only because his response from Meryl's character is similar to one e made by Condoleezza Rice just last week, "we do not torture."

Thanks for all the new links WDW..I don't know if you've changed it or anything, but the BBC link works fine for me, alhtough I'm in the UK too. Jake was just so funny there. I can't wait to see all this other shows this week.

That's exactly what it is, WDW.

I just did a bit of research on the BBC's YouTube page and found this below:

Because of the way that the BBC is funded in the UK through the licence fee, we cannot make videos available outside of the UK.

The http://www.youtube.com/BBCWorldwide channel is run by our commercial subsidiary, BBC Worldwide, so does contain BBC videos that are available across the world.

Whoopsy, the 'f' above is me.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sass! It has been incredible hasn't it - I can't count how many times I've rewatched JR now and it gets better each time. And with all these clips from Rendition, I'm becoming desperate for is release :)

Thanks Rosiet :) I think it works for you as you're in the UK too - naughty BBC. I can't wait for the shows next week - * casting loving looks at our American cousins that they'll capture them for us * :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

ahhh, thanks Felicia my friend - that will explain why they wouldn't let me link to it properly. Well thanks to your link we now have alternatives. That licence fee is a lot of trouble in more ways than I imagined ;)

Cherita said...

Thanks again for getting all of the Jonathan Ross material to us, and for finding us yet more interviews, too. I haven't watched today's links yet because I just came back in the room and found BBM on, so you know I can't not watch it first. I especially like that you find interviews with Peter, as I tend to get such Jake-tunnel-vision I never remember to search for those things. ;) I love Peter.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Cherita - I'm grateful to you popping by at all if BBM is on! You're inspiring me to watch it too. I love Peter too very much - he was so nice to me in Toronto.

Ruby said...

Thanks for the links WDW. In that WISN video they spell his name incorrectly on the on-screen banner! How amateur is that?!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for all the links WDW! And to Cherita and Stephanie :)
Btw, as a licence payer I'd much rather the BBC spent my money on letting non UK Gyllenhaalics see our man than giving airtime to the likes of Katie and Peter, but what do I know, I'm just a humble licence fee payer...

They certainly seem to be making a big effort to promote Rendition, which is good news for us. I'd be interested in seeing it even if Jake wasn't in it. But as he is, I'm positively desperate!Roll on Friday!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Ruby - too right, that's not good at all, even worse that mispronouncing that beautiful name. Grrr.

Hi Twisted Logic - as a licence fee payer as well I would prefer my licence fee to be spent on wall to wall Jake....

There is so much going on for Rendition, surely more than for Zodiac. I wasn't expecting it!

Anonymous said...

Good point WDW! They should get rid of all the pointless digital channels that no-one watches and use the money to start The Jake Gyllenhaal Channel;)
Hey Ruby! I didn't notice they'd mis-spelt Gyllenhaal at first - how rude!

Thinking about your reflections here from Jake about playing a superhero, WDW, I had some thoughts:

Maybe Jake has realized his old dream about playing a "superhero" after all.

When it comes right down to it, superheroes aren't comic book figures but ordinary people who find themselves confronting the demons and darknesses of our time.
Often in doing so, they find themselves enlisting the response of other ordinary people like us.

So far Jake's played characters who've helped us to confront the demons of global warming, homophobia, and extraordinary rendition, among others.

In this task he's certainly been helped by some able assistants, since even "superheroes" can't succeed without the support of others.

So kudos to the many who have cooperated here to get out the videos, interviews, and reviews that help promote dialogue around these key issues.

I for one am as grateful to you all for your "heroic" efforts as I am to Jake for his.

A great selection of clips,
tonight,WDW, going to prove again,as if proof were needed, that Jake wears humour and eloquence with equal ease.

I am SO proud of him, having watched the JR interview a few times more, in a more relaxed frame of mind, and therefore more able to pick up on the subtleties and inflections of a very animated and entertaining performance from our lovely man.

I'm prouder still of his contributions to various News channels, especially the BBC's flagship 10 p.m bulletin, although scandalously short. Maybe that snippet was filched from the interview with Frank Gardner which must be already in the can, though not due to air for another couple of weeks, and so we'll get to see Jake expand on the more serious and highly politically relevant themes of "Rendition" then.

Despite the hike in the BBC license fee,I suspect that one of the departments which may have been hit by cut-backs due to financial constraints is the BBC Pronunciation Department, which can be consulted (or at least could, perhaps no more) by News-readers,presenters,researchers etc to make sure of the pronunciation of difficult or unusual words/names. Obviously Fiona Bruce didn't access such a service, pronouncing Gyllenhaal with a hard G. Off to the Tower with her!

Can I echo the appreciation of your inclusion of Peter's clip, too,WDW. He makes a very erudite and interesting interviewee too, although we know that he and Jake are also a very funny double-act.

The fact that this is a big week for all things Jake is taking the edge off the fact that I'm back to work tomorrow after 10 days at home with my husband. I just know we can rely on Stephanie and other kind American friends to keep us in the chat show loop so we don't miss a second of the Jake-fest on this side of the pond :-) Thanks to WDW,TL and all of you who feed the need!

I can never thank Jake enough for bringing us all together. Some great friendships have been made and are being made - and I love how we can work together to ensure that noone, wherever they might live, will miss out on these great days.

Thank you everyone - this evening didn't start off too good, it's ending on a great note, thanks to Kim and to you all :D

That's interesting that the BBC News clip could have been from the Gardner interview. Very possible.

Oh pooh. No Jake in spandex.

Guess we'll have to settle with those biking pictures (which, by the way, are still very yummy).

Ah well. Jake, you are still the man for that upcoming space movie. And who can forget Brothers? I can't believe I never drew the similarities between Toby and Jake before hearing about this, especially since now that I look at them, they DO look remarkably similar, I guess (but, Jake, my money's still all down on you).

They should get rid of all the pointless digital channels that no-one watches and use the money to start The Jake Gyllenhaal Channel;)
Amen to that! I am certain that would be my favorite channel even if all Jake did was just sit there :) Or smiles. Yeah, I can deal with smiling.

This is my first torture.
I just wanted to say that I love this line.

Hi Positively Pia, heehee you make me laugh..."God" is a good description. There's this girl that works with me that looks like she could be Jake's identical sister and every once in awhile she catches me staring at her...I can only imagine what she nust think!! People are starting to get a hint of my obsession but I down play it and just laugh because if they only knew the truth they would probably lock me up. Only those who really know me know my secret. That's fine with me.

chillinwitgyllen said...

BTW when I saw Rendition at TIFF eveyone in the audience roared with laughter when he said that line: "this is my first torture"...it was like a great line that was needed during a very intense scene...wonder if the US will have the same response.

Too right! We are definitely a unique fanbase, but then Jake is a unique actor and a unique man so it's not surprising he attracts such wonderful people as his fans :) Thanks to WDW and evryone who's posted clips and links, and thanks in advance to the US branch, who I'm sure will once again work hard to make sure we get all the upcoming Jake Week treats :)

WDW, that was the back of my head at the bottom of the video...I was there and Jake walked right in front of me and gave me this most beautiful smile, it's like a distant memory but my friend at Jake Watch was there and sent me a copy of the video to remind me of that perfect moment. He was scruffy and handsome and not as tall I as imagined. It was 80 degrees and he was wearing a suit with a black sweater underneath, I couldn't help but think how sweaty he must have been...yummy ;)

why does everybody insist on repeating the best line in the film, and thereby diluting the effect of it for everyone who has yet to see the film??? This is nothing less than a spoiler IMO. GDI!!!

Anonymous said...

WDW, I just had a thought. I really hope I am wrong. Off base, etc.but i hope he isn't getting sick.Flying to London, doing a slew of interviews and turning right around and flying back to NYC made me wonder. The pictures of Jake leaving Heathrow, all bundled in that scarf. His eyes looked kind of sunken. Dark circles for sure. I hope he didn't catch some kind of flu bug or strep throat or something. OTOH,maybe he left early in the AM and it was chilly. Don't be sick, Jake!

Anonymous said...

^^^ I think this is the exact reason why he had a scarf around his neck even though ppl said it was a warm day in London. I think the scarf was a safety measure, Jake's already said he's a hypochondriac, I think he was just taking precautions.

Yeah, and stop with the spoilers, I never would have expected that here.

Anonymous said...

^^Perhaps he's concerned he'll develop Blue Tongue?

The more I see it, the more I like the JR interview. Jake comes across as funnier and smarter than I've seen him elsewhere, not just laughing at other people's jokes, but dropping a few of his own. Someone give this man a comedy, now!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone :) Thanks for all the comments.

No time to comment myself right now but just have to say that the 'spoiler' a couple of people have referred to is in a clip that almost every video/interview is showing, including Jonathan Ross. It is unavoidable. I am trying hard to avoid any reference to any scenes not shown in trailers/publicity.

Hi WDW, I'm back! :)

Thanks to you and to anyone contributed to this extraordinary coverage of Jake presence in UK!
You all did a wonderful job! :)

I haven't seen the video of JR yet but *speaks under her breath* I've watched it audio-less and Jake seems relaxed and funny IMO. :)

Good morning lil darlins!

I think Jake left London in the early morning and was prepared for cool weather on the plane and maybe in NYC. But yes I guess hypochondriac Jake is part of his profile, by now. One more attibute about which to coo. Coo!

Into the work week, and more Jake, with MANY thanks to you Brits for looking after him, and US ! ! !

From one interview I was struck by Jake saying that we (USAans, but he'd probably be more worldly, if pressed) - could be "an extraordinary people".

Xenia said...

I've just watched the JR videos and I had to comment about them...

I think that Jake handled it beautifully, he knows how to parry a blow with divine sweetness and how to inflict one with that wonderful smile of his...

What can I say, I love him...:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi friends!

When Jake left here all wrapped up against a chill, he very kindly left us with a gift of some very unseasonably warm weather. It's so warm today. I hope Jake's feeling warm and recovered now.

You're right Pia - this possible hypochondria just endears him to us more :) Makes me want to get the cotton wool out.

Welcome back Xenia! Have you checked your emails?

^^^ Up until a couple of days ago, that spoiler line was not being shown, I had seen a couple of clips with the phone call in it, but the clip would end before the line. Also, when I first heard that that was Jake's favourite line, somehow he conveyed this reason "why I took the role" without disclosing the line itself. I particularily noted that the line was not being used, believe me. I think it's a great line, obviously.

I know we can't turn back the clock, but at least this site does not have to perpetuate this spoiler. Jonathan Ross was the first dumb bunny to spill the beans. But this could have been contained. JMO.

Anonymous said...

As someone who tries to avoid spoilers, I have to say I don't have a problem with that line being talked about here, as WDW says it was in the JR interview so it's unavoidable. And I don't think you can blame JR for showing it, it would surely be up to New Line what clip they made available. I didn't find it spoiler-ish cos it was out of the context of the film as a whole. To me, a spoiler would be if they revealed the twist at the end, or revealed something like the death of a character or some other major event in the film. We all know that Jake's character questions the practise of rendition during the film, so I don't see how it was a spoiler.
I watched the JR interview again last night and I noticed that after the clip Jake says to JR that he was expecting laughter, to which JR replied that he was sorry he'd disappointed Jake. I have to say I didn't laugh either, but I probably would have done (and will do) seeing it in its proper context in the film. Like I said, I try to avoid spoilers and if the clip had been posted somewhere independently I wouldn't have watched it just in case, in the same way that I haven't watched the Press Conferences or the HBO thing where the actors and Gavin Hood might go into detail about the characters' motivations, etc. But as part of a wonderfully entertaining interview I don't see anything wrong with it being included.

Anonymous said...

Hi All,

Just peeking in from work. I had heard "the line" somewhere (maybe another interview?) long before the JR show, and Jake's references to it. I still don't know the entire context in which it is being used, and won't until Friday, so I don't consider it spoiler-ish. Just my $.02.

Very excited about seeing Jake on David Letterman tonight. Love the scarf, maybe our boy caught a little chill "swimming" across the Atlantic? ;) Can't wait for Friday!

Nadine, don't worry about the risque British humor, I loved it, very entertaining! I also find Peter and Katie very cute, Peter has a lot of warmth or something that makes him endearing. I like that Katie is going by her real name instead of Jordan, more down-to-earth. She's like the UK's version of Pamela Anderson. Just another $.02. Loved the reactions in the Green Room to them, too. ;)

See you all later -

^^^Well I must admit to being way more sensitive to spoilers than some of you, I depise spoilers. So much so that I won't watch a preview of a movie that I haven't seen. I really did it to myself with The Truman Show, hahaha, I had no idea what was going on in that movie, LOL. I guess that's one time where knowing something about the movie going in would have been helpful :p

Anyway I'm not gonna beat this dead horse anymore, good for all of you if you are not pissed off, yaaaay, go Jake!!!

Hi again WDW,
You have done all the hard, maybe not so hard work, and I can't even post my comments in the right section.

I just downloaded and watched Jake's interview again. His quick answers were so much fun, I couldn't stop laughing, and I think Jonathan enjoyed this interview immensely.
I finally heard the were you Martha or Arthur question.Jake looked just a bit peeved, but made an excellent recovery as did the host.
I don't know whether there are commercials on the BBC, but that was a wonderfully long uninterrupted interview segment. Most daytime personality shows here, "The View" or "Live with Regis and Kelley" have 10-15 minute segments or longer, interrupted by commercial breaks. The am and pm news and night time shows have much shorter segments surrounded by commercials. Fifteen minutes of Jake: Priceless.

Jake's giggle is infectious and his wit amazing. He is funny and can hold his own with any interviewer. I had no problem with Jonathan mentioning BBM, though I'm sure Jake would rather talk about his latest two movies, Zodiac and Rendition; What actor doesn't. Whatever, Jake was gracious and accommodating as all ways.
Again, thanks for helping us USA over the ponders enjoy Jake at his best, looking and sounding great on British TV.

Me too, Anon., I try to avoid spoilers as much as possible before a film, so I know what you mean. We only have a few more days to hold out! ;) I'll try to erase my mind of everything I've heard or read between now and Friday. The last two interviews were great, WDW.

Yes, thanks for a lovely post, Kim. :)

Anouska, American men may not want to give up Pammie - she does have wonderful humor and I admire her compassion for animals.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone - I'm actually home from work - a miracle... :D

D'you know, I reckon I can't win with the 'spoiler' thing! JR wasn't the first to mention The Line - Jake was the first and he's mentioned it in several other interviews, going back to Toronto. He's gone on and on about it, he's using it to plug his movie.

I've seen the film and I am so aware that most other people haven't, hence I've done no review and mentioned if interviews/videos are spoilery. I didn't this time with JR because we're into the home straight with Rendition now - we've a week of interviews and I can't ignore what Jake says in them, nor would I wish to.

It was worse with Zodiac - that film came out so much earlier in the US than anywhere else and so everything had the potential to be spoilery but I also wanted to discuss the film which will forever rank as one of my favourite films of all time. Rendition is far more 'rushed' and urgent. Many of us are going to experince this film at the same time and other countries hopefully won't be too far behind.

Anon My intention was certainly not to 'piss you off' but to provide a commentary, not to mention a presentation, of Jake in Action.

All I can say is, don't watch any of the interviews this week - there will be spoilers. But the incredible and wonderful thing is that while the odd line has come out, the real treats of this film remain unspoiled.

Twisted Logic - that's very interesting that Jake said that about the laughter - or absence of it. I watched the interview again on my MP4 on the Tube today andI heard that for the first time. As you say it was out of context. Its full effect will be in the film.

Marina - I have to agree with Anouska!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Sass! We're spared commercials on the BBC so it's a great place to enjoy Jake being interviewed :D

Marina - I'm glad you enjoyed the interviews *)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Sass - I don't know what it is but I seem to have failed with communications today! I haven't got your PM! I could do with having a chat so give it another go ;)

Cherita said...

Ladies, I didn't hear the comment you did about expecting laughter, and I'm wondering if what you're referring to was Jake commenting to Jonathan that he somehow expected him to be wearing something more colorful. Did you hear that part? Because if not, I'm guessing it's what you think was the part about laughter. But he definitely was talking about JR's wardrobe. If that wasn't the comment, let me know and I'll just have to endure the process of watching the whole thing again when I get home. ;)

I would really be surprised if Jake had commented on a lack of laughter. Just doesn't seem like him. The line itself (and you're absolutely right, WDW, it's Jake who's been repeating it over and over, don't fret) is black humor, but in context, the conversation is very tense and a lack of out-loud laughter doesn't mean anything.

Anonymous said...

Cherita, Im pretty sure Jake was referring to that line in the film, and apparantly his understanding that audience has in early viewings responded with laughter.

It does seem unJakelike, but who knows? Reese in one interview described Rendition as "a fun film". Jeeeze!

Just seeing snips, Id not even responded to it as "black humor", but a serious naive agitated response. but we're seeing all of these scenes out of context.

Tell you what, Im not exactly crazy about seeing a film with torture scenes, the latest Jas Bond with a naked whatsisname being beaten on his privates was a bit much for this woman.

It interested me that Gavin Hood spoke so passionately and explicitly about torture - good for GH - I like him alot.

People laughed in BBMt when Alma saw Jack and Ennis in passionate embrace - I couldnt for the life of me figure out why.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Cherita - I'll go back and give it another lesson - hardship I know, but the things I put myself through for Jake... - but I thought it was about the clip but I could be wrong. It was difficult to hear.

Hey Positively Pia - it is so interesting listening to how people take this line and I can't wait to hear what you think when you've seen it. That Bond scene was so ouch!

I have to say I am going to be a fan of Gavin for a long time after this film.

As for people laughing at Jack and Ennis embracing - I'm fortunate to have been spared that whenever I saw it.

^^I thought that "the line" was said with sarcasm/irony, a retort said aghast or in frustration in response to Meryl's character's cold and matter-of-fact statements about the events. But, as I said, I haven't seen it in it's entire context. We'll soon see!

Hey Cherita! I don't remember Jake saying anything about JR's clothes, apart from when he said about judging by his clothes and his hair in regards to JR wondering if Ennis and Jack were gay. I've watched the interview again and I'm pretty sure Jake says "I was waiting for *something* laughter from you" and JR says "I've disappointed you". It's difficult to hear though, I only caught it (or thought I did!) last night. Of course, if I could make out what the *something* is that Jake says, it might sound totally different, but it definitely sounds like he's saying laughter. I'm happy to be proved wrong though!

I think we should all watch it again :)

^ Oh, go on then! I wasn't planning to, but if you insist...;)

This reminds me of the endless replaying of FNIT, trying to work out what was or wasn't said;D Happy days!

I believe the quote is, I was waiting for a more colorful outfit from you. I could be completely wrong, of course, but it sounds just crazy and non-sequitur enough to be right.

Ok, I watched Part 1 and 2 again (because I'm just that way), and what a difference a day (or two!) makes. I think actually Jake had great fun doing the JR program, I think my clip was a bit choppy and didn't run smoothly the first time I watched it, so I missed a bit and maybe misinterpreted some? It was very enjoyable, I didn't see any discomfort this time.

About "the line" - in addition to everything I saw in my previous post, I see an innocence too, a disappointment, confusion, frustration, something. I guess I'll have to quit trying to figure it out and see for myself! :)

This could be way out of left field, but I thought Jake was saying to JR through the audience laughter "I gotta tell ya, I gotta say quick that I was expecting a more colorful outfit(?) from you" to which JR replies "I've disappointed you." Is JR known for that?

I'd better say goodnite -

:)

Hey Cherita and Marina! I've watched it again, and you are both absolutely right- he does say colourful outfit. It was the "colourful" bit that I couldn't hear which threw me, but after reading what you both said and watching it again, that's definitely what he says. And Marina, yes JR is known for his er...interesting wardrobe choices (although he's toned it down a lot lately) so it makes perfect sense. So I apologise for starting this whole "laughter" mix up. I'll get my coat...
