Jake's talk-show 'trifecta', Amnesty's support for the film, and Beardgate continues

Jake Gyllenhaal is topping the New York Post's list of 'Most Difficult to Avoid' stars, the reason being that all our Christmases have come at once this week and Jake is barely off the TV before he's back on it. Apparently Jake 'nabs a talk-show trifecta this week: Letterman (Monday), Regis (Tuesday) and Ellen (Thursday).' Of course, tonight (well, the wee small hours of the morning in Anglo money) is Letterman night. Jake has said that he feels nervous of Letterman but he has no reason to be.

There are Rendition previews in abundance for Wednesday and Thursday this week. I'm fortunate enough to be attending one on Thursday thanks to The Guardian. As reported in Variety, the audience who were lucky enough to attend one preview that took place last Thursday at Hollywood's Arclight Theater enjoyed a Q&A session with Gavin Hood, Kelley Sane and Omar Metwally. Omar is superb in Rendition and he is well aware that he has much to thank his director for: 'In terms of the intensity of the scenes, I had a great director and I had a very safe environment... Gavin was an actor for years and really knows how to make us feel like we can give our best so I give him a lot of thanks for creating an environment where I can try to do that.'

Jake has commented that Gavin's South African heritage and his memories of Apartheid gave him a unique perspective for a film about rendition. As Gavin says: 'I come from a country that threw out all the rules... There was detention without trial and it was a time when we looked to the American Constitution as an extraordinary document that we felt we needed, and perhaps that's why I feel somewhat overly passionate about the debate.'

Gavin expands on this in a phone interview he gave with Filmmaker South Africa. He also points out that fear for the security of his cast and crew 'was one of the reasons we didn't name a specific country... El-Ibrahimi has no idea where he's been taken. Maybe the audience shouldn't either.'

How topical Rendition is becomes painfully clear when one sees that Amnesty International has chosen to coincide with Rendition's release its declaration that many prisoners in the War on Terror are still missing and its announcement of a new campaign. Isn't this just what Jake, Reese, Gavin, Kelley and everyone else involved in this project would wish?

'Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen said: 'Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon's film is extremely timely as prisoners are still missing after being subject to 'rendition' - basically another word for kidnapping and secret detention... Anyone who goes to see this powerful film and comes out of a cinema believing that kidnap and secret detention are wrong can do something about it - they can support our new 'Unsubscribe' campaign to stop human rights abuses in the 'war on terror'.'

And then there's the beard

Leave it to Fox's Pop Tarts to get to the heart of what Rendition is all about - Jake's beard. In this video interview on the LA 'red carpet' (if you can hear Jake and Reese above the noise of the traffic driving past unaware of this 'premiere'), one of the girls tells Jake: '"I wouldn’t recognize you in the street, you look different all the time,” we told the “Brokeback" boy. “Is that a good thing?” he asked. Of course we assured him it was — and that “change was as good as a holiday." “Wow, that’s amazing," Jake responded. "I like that — I’m going to use it in the next interview!”

Jake also says in this interview that Rendition works because it has three qualities: it's an important subject, it's got drama and its current. Oh yes, and Jake doesn't have a beard in it.

WDW the fox news video isnt working for me. just sayin.

quite a provocative "column" you have today! I thot Jake's beard was going to be about something else haha. However, I do wish his mom or p.a. would tell him to stop stroking his beard, it is SO Sigmund Freud!

what's provocative? the subject. and the film. I wonder if Jake's gonna take heat fore this. maybe. maybe not. we're all good at not listening.

love my Jake!

Hi Positively Pia - these blasted videos... what can I say? It works for me when I click on it...I'll give it a good yelling at ;)

Oh no, provocative :\ The only thing that should be provocative about this post is the power of the film Gavin et al are discussing. I don't think Jake will take heat for this - I would have thought far less than for BBM (I mean he's still being teased for that two years on).

I suppose it's hard to resist stroking such a beard, at least it makes a change from cleaning counter-tops with it! There is so much to love about Jake :)

Hey Pia, you're not the only one having trouble with the video. I got it to work but it kept stopping and starting:( I got the gist of it though:)

All this "serious" coverage that Rendition is getting is yet another reason why we should be proud of our Jake. It would be easy for him to make films that are..not irrelevant, but un-controversial (if that's even a word). The fact that he chooses to do films like Rendition, BBM and Jarhead, knowing that he'll inevitably cop a lot of flak for it or possibly alienate sections of the audience who might not agree with the message in the film, shows how important it is for him to use his talent to do some good, however small, as well as picking projects that enable him to stretch himself and show that talent at its best. I know I've gone on in the past about him not having much lined up at times, but I'll take quality over quantity any time.

Hey Twisted Logic - sorry it's not working so well. It's possible a few people are trying to watch it at the same time, which might be making it juddery.

You are so right - if Jake made 'easy, comfortable' films then we wouldn't be here this evening talking about him. After all, it's Jake's films and roles that brought us together in the first place. And here we have another :) The quality is definitely more important than quantity but with Rendition hot on the heels of Zodiac, and the Moon Project film (now on IMDb) so soon after Brothers, we're lucky enough to have both!

I just have to say yet again - I'm craving this Moon Project film!

Anonymous said...

Yes, Im craving the MOON PROJECT film, too. After all, didnt Stephen Hawking (cf Donnie Darko) say we've gotta migrate? And didsnt Donnie say, "I'm SO looking forward to what happens after the world ends."

Right. However, WDW, Ive just remembered (I was out of booze, had to order it in from my local boozerie, handsome young Jonathan with whom I discuss F Scott Fitzgerald, deliver. . . ) WHY I thot today's column provocative.

In Fox interview "Reese found slumming on set with a certain co-star a rather “raunchy” experience — and we’re not talking about “acting up” alongside her on-again/off-again romantic interest Jake Gyllenhaal."

WHO was the "slum-bag", why does a "star" refer to any co-star in this way and and what does "acting-up" (in regard to Jake) mean?

And should we quote blue meanies?

Just sayin'

Wet Dark and Wild said...

My night is going well - I've put Zodiac on and it goes well with the glass of Jamie ;)

Reese found 'slumming' it 'raunchy' on set? Strange idea. Her main co-stars were Peter, Omar and Meryl, none of whom seem slummy to me. All sounds like nonsense :( I'm definitely ignoring the Blue Meanies (can't say that without mentioning how much I love that film!)

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten all about the Moon Film with everything else going on! I have to say I'm intrigued by that, even though sci-fi isn't my thing, but neither are war films and I love Jarhead:) I trust Jake 100% to choose a great script and give an excellent performance, so I'll always look forward to anything he does. And if the astronaut character is clean shaven, or sporting just a small amount of facial fuzz, then all the better;)

PS: I can only think that the "slumming it" and "raunchy" comments are about Reese talking about Meryl Streep telling dirty jokes on-set?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

That's true Twisted Logic - Reese refers to Meryl telling rude jokes on set. Wouldn't mind hearing those :D

I really don't think a beard is a good idea in space... If anyone can win you over to scifi it's jake (oh and I'll work on you too :D)

That's not nice! oh well, stop being judgemental, Pia, and Go To Bed.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia - what's not nice? :)

Anonymous said...

I mean, "that's not nice" to refer to Meryl's jokes as "slumming" I adore Meryl. yes, what are these?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Yep, I do too - I'm an Out of Africa girl through and through...

Anonymous said...

not nice to refer to relationsthip with any co star as "slumming" - but maybe this is humorous?

and why am I analyzing every remark? I need to mind my own ps and qs.

Because you care :) It's midnight here so I'd better be off.

All of you here who are able, enjoy Jake on Letterman tonight :)

Gearing up for Letterman tonite...I was with a bunch of women tonite at my 4 year old's ballet class and I was talking about staying up to see Jake on Letterman and I kid you not they had no idea who I was talking about! What universe do these people live in? Makes me appreciate this forum even more. I hope everyone enjoys as much as I will ;)

*scratching head*

I still can't figure out why someone would want to avoid Jake.

;)

Yes, the way I interpreted that idiotic headline was that they were referring to Meryl's blue humor. Dumb, dumb attempt to roll several rumors into the subject, and it fell completely flat.

I love the beard stroking! It reminds me that it feels weird to him. And of course I think we all agree with what you said, TL, about quality over quantity and Jake's choices. It's a huge part of why I'm here now.

WDW thanks for drawing our attention to this. Let me know more. I don't think I need to see this film before supporting this campaign ---- the film(if and when I'm lucky to see it) will fire up my passion some more though!

Thanks again and Hi and a Hug to all WDW-ers!

WDW, OMG The NY Post...what a hoot! You sure know how to find great Jake news.
Hell, I live here, and I didn't read the post today, nor did I look for it online.

I can't get the videos up and open yet, but I'll try later, when the servers may be less busy.
Now I'm off to read and wait for Letterman.
I'm loving all the Jake news and your site:)

Hey WDW and everyone....I just watched Jake on Letterman, and Jake was totally hysterical. I was literally crying from laughing so much, cause Jake tells a particular story of an incident that went on at his hotel in London. It is so dam funny!!

Got a bit of catching up to do with the posts here. Everyone have a good one, you too WDW!

Morning everyone :)

Happy days! Speak to you all later, I'm late this morning - and it's all Jake's fault ;)

I don't believe in Annesty International. This organization don't know the situation of countries whose investigate or this organization has interest to win money of donations. I saw their negative politic actions in Rio de Janeiro. They protect thieves and drug dealers so much that the people of this city become the biggest victims of their crimes. Nowadays in Rio de Janeiro thanks to Annesty International and all brazilien corrupts... the police chase the small drog dealers whose theaten the bigger one and the robbers have all kind of help of their lawyers to go out of prison. The people of Rio become the Death Sentence and the they are terrified!

Coming late to this,but it's a great,thought provoking post!

For anyone still having trouble getting the video to play, I found that if I clicked on WDW's "Jake's Beard" link to the Fox News article and then clicked on the original link to the Jake/Reese video then it worked fine from there.

I agree wholeheartedly with Jake that torture is wrong, but it's still undeniably true that politically "Rendition" is a complex issue, where nothing is completely black and white. The argument that by causing a certain amount of suffering to one person you elicit information which saves the lives of many thousands more cannot be totally discounted, although my gut reaction is that torture is still wrong and not the answer and the Shakespeare quote Jake uses in the film to illustrate the point makes the case for the futility of torture, quite apart from its cruelty, much better than I can.

It's really hard, when one believes in justice and fairness,to decide how to deal with (potential) terrorists, whose methods are neither just nor fair.

Similarly,I am vehemently opposed to the death penalty, even for those proven guilty, because, for me,it is still state-sponsored murder and,at some stage, someone wholly innocent will be wrongly condemned to death. A posthumous pardon is all very well but you can't un-hang an innocent man.

The release of "Rendition" may also remind people that there are still prisoners in Guantanamo Bay,held for years without trial. I saw some really disturbing footage the other day where a prisoner there was literally banging his head up the wall until it was pouring with blood. While I abhor the violence planned and perpetrated by extremists and terrorists, there must be people in detention at the moment who are totally innocent, just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I really have no idea what the answer is,greater minds than mine seem devoid of a solution too. However,a film like "Rendition",with a writer, director and cast brave enough to get the issue out there through a global medium, has surely already kick-started greater awareness and debate. Maybe the debate which grows out of films like this will begin to find some better answers to the problems of a frightened world.

Sorry to ramble on in a rather downbeat fashion, just felt moved to say it and thanks for the arena to do so,WDW.

WDW, yes Jake said he was planning a bike ride today with Lance, when asked what he does with his spare time. He also commented on Lance as being one of his 'good buddies'.
I also bike so I know how good it feels, it's an outlet especially when your stressed out. There's a really nice feeling when your biking. It's cleansing for the mind. This time of year the weather is perfect and the foliage amazing in New York.
