I can't believe some of the things being said on Jakes IMDB board about this interview.

TLs great, isn't she Marina :) She's hard at work on Part 2 right now.

Anon - to be honest, I never lose a moment's rest about what's said over there. Best to leave them to it.

Gay is not an insult.

I want to nip this in the bud before it gets going - please enjoy the video and the hard work that got it here so quickly.

Who mentioned anything about gays. All I said was people are going a bit over the top.

Sorry WDW I must have posted at he same time as you. I will not say anything else. I saw the shaw by the way.

Thanks Anon - I appreciate that :)

No one mention of Rendition yet, that's why he's there, to promote the movie, I felt like Jake was a bit taken back by JR's comments so far.

Anonymous said...

You're welcome, Marina:) Hope you enjoy!

I can't cmment much on the interview itself right now cos it was all a bit of blur! But I loved the swimming thing and I didn't mind at all that Jonathan asked about BBm. They couldn't talk about Rendition too much without giving too much away, and it wasn't the right show to go into detail about rendition in a general sense. BBM was a landmark movie, and it made Jake's career to the extent that a lot of us wouldn't be here now if he hadn't done it, so I was pleased that he talked about it (though I admit I just love to hear Jake talk Brokeback, so I'm very biased). I did think Jake was unhappy with the "joke" in the Green Room (JR asked Jake if he was "Arthur or Martha" in the film, I'll upload that bit tomorrow if I can) and I have to say I was too, it was cheap and tasteless and I would've thought JR was above that:( His obvious appreciation of BBM came through though, so that sort of made up for it. I have to watch the whole thing again to really take it in, so I'll be back tomorrow to discuss this further- you've all been warned!!;D

Thank you!! I thought I wouldn't be able to see it since I'm in Maryland USA. You rock!

I thought Jake was sensational. He is so witty and fun. He gave us lots of Gyllenhaal charm. His response to the clip, his story about the shoulder popping in CS, and the erotic out-takes from BBM, his politely worded statement about having overdid (every day) the local cuisine, everything he said-- I loved it and I'm gushing for sure. LOL.

Did you see that dazzling smile he flashed when he was leaving, turned and said thank you to the audience!!!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

What a great way to end the day! I'm off to bed too with happy thoughts of swimming Jake and couscous.

Anon - the erotic outtakes were so funny! What a turn on - popping shoulders :)

Thanks again Twisted Logic :)

I'm in London Jaking tomorrow but should be able to get on line during the day :D

First of all WDW totally rocks. I can't believe I'm able to watch this already. Thanks also to TL.

Yeah, about the BBM comments, I have to admit I was a bit taken aback that JR focused so much on it, I mean, it seems, half the interview. However Jake handled it all with charm and wit...can I love him anymore?

I loved Jake little snap back, though, the comment about "judging from your clothes and hair..." Loved the swimming references and the word "erotic" coming out of Jake's mouth. Have we ever heard him say that word before? My ears are still ringing.

Sigh the official start of Jake Week. Me so happy. xx Em

Yes - I have to say that I think it appeared that maybe Jake was a little unpleasantly surprised by the clip used - and that Brokeback was too much the focus (so far anyway!) of the interview. I found myself saying "for criney out loud, let's talk about Rendition!" Jake to his credit didn't seem to bite, and that tells me he wouldn't stand for such a beautiful film to be used as someone's schtick, and I thought he made that quite clear when JR made a joke about Jake's swimming appearing on YouTube, and Jake countered that it would have been a better choice than the clip used on the show! I hope that JR did sincerely appreciate Brokeback Mountain. I don't know - I don't know how much rehearsals or "winging it" goes in to preparing for talk shows?

That said, I thought the guys on the piano were adorable, and JR's jokes at the beginning were funny, about the song being a hit from the 60's and how "something went terribly wrong" that his beard didn't look like Jake's! The clip they used from BBM is probably my favorite; it really shows how good Jake is at conveying without showing too much, as we were discussing last night. I still think Katie and Andre are adorable, especially Andre reaching over and giving Katie's hand a squeeze in the Green Room. These are just my impressions, I could be way off! Now I'll watch Part II. :)

Anonymous said...

Who's Andre and Katie?

Anonymous said...

Thanks TL and WDW for these clips! I'm thrilled that we get to see these so quickly, here across the pond. My favorite parts were when Jake talked about being on the phone for Meryl, and also when Jonathan made the comment about Maggie, and Jake automatically starts to say thank you, then stops and says "Thank you???" :-)

I love how Jake can just go with the flow in an interview, no matter what is thrown his way.

Anonymous said...

Thanks WDW and TL !!! I am So grateful that you were able to do this. It was wonderful. Every second.

Anonymous said...

Decided to get out of bed and do a fly by tonight did not expect to find the videos of JR show already up - thank you so much, darlings! He was beautiful!

too sleepy for further comments, but now I have sweet dreams of Jake to take back to bed with me.

Anonymous said...

Thank you so much for getting this here for us. I just love him so much. Smart, funny, poised. He really did well, I thought. Cute when he had to be reminded he did a Western. I'm just charmed by him.

Anonymous said...

Thanks TL and WDW, yes, TL is wonderful -

Correction: I meant to say Katie and Peter Andre, but I'm typing so fast! ;)

And I take it all back - the second half of the interview is much, much more enjoyable, more warm and relaxed on both sides. I liked the joke about JR being offered Meryl's part, and his quip about the Devil Wears Prada role! ;)

But, I have to say I am just blown away by the clip of Douglas on the phone with Meryl's character - Jake is incredible in it, the frustration and so many things (I'll have to see the film in its entire context to know), on his face as he's trying to get get through to her, and the irony of his saying "this is my first torture". I wondered what he meant when he said that was one of his favorite lines, and now I know. This film is really going to be intense. Jake is quite serious about it in this interview (of course) and he may have just wanted to spend more time talking about it. His good looks are beside the point - he is a fine actor. I am amazed by this clip, and I totally loved Brokeback.

Loved the chat about Morocco food, what he might have done if he hadn't gone into acting, and of course Jake saying the word "erotic". ;) And is there anything more adorable than Jake in City Slickers? So natural in front of the camera, even as a child. I must have seen it so long ago I didn't remember, or maybe I havent' seen it. I'll have to make sure I watch it again.

So taken on the whole, a quite enjoyable interview, and it seemed to be longer than we're used to getting in the US, which is nice! Friday the 19th just happens to be my day off, and I am going to enjoy Rendition day!

Thanks again :*

Hi WDW,
I had to come over and say thank you for posting the interview tonight. I can't say enough about how much I absolutely love this site.
Jake is so articulate, his quick responses and his fantastic sense of humor is phenomenal, especially when he was asked, how could he--a Hollywood environmentalist-- fly over to England and leave such a huge footprint on our environment. I won't spoil it for others by giving Jake's answer here, but he had me on the floor rolling with laughing. It all ways good to hear Jake talk about BBM; about his role in the film and what it means to him. He agreed with Jonathan that BBM was the watershed role of his career. He's a fine young man; strong, confidant, opinionated and compassionate.
Again WDW, TY for having this fantastic interview up so quickly; I'm totally blown away that I'm able to enjoy it here in the USA with everyone in London.:)
good night all

Wow. Thank you so much TL and WDW for doing this, it's great to watch it again. I agree wit TL the 'Martha of Arthur' joke at the beginning from Jonathan was a little off, but it went upwards fast from there. I thought Jake was great and I can't wait to see the movie.

Anonymous said...

Bah, they should never have shown that line, the best line in the film IMO. I have seen Rendition already, and when he said it the audience burst out laughing, it was such a shock and so unexpected. Stupid JR, he fn spoiled it. What a dummy.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone :) Phew! What a late night, I hope Jake got more sleep than I did - I bet he was worn out after all that swimming...

I've just watched it all yet again and I must agree that as it goes on it becomes more and more enjoyable. I loved the part about Moroccan food and Meryl in particular.

Thanks again to Twisted Logic who will be adding the little extras and the news item from the BBC1 News. I owe you some chocolate :)

My all time favourite Ross interview was with Russell Brand. He just wiped the floor with Mr Ross, who looked quite put out at not being able to do his 'telling jokes to famous people' schtick.

Jake handled himself with aplomb, and, i for one am quite pleased to discover he enjoys the odd dirty joke.

PS: Gyllenhaal family friend Marco Batali (sp?) is interview in today's Guardian magazine about his ideal last meal.

Thank you so much for the videos, WDW and TL!!!

After I watched the first one for the first time I was left with a bit of an awkward feeling... But after I watched the second one and then both again it got better.
Jake being a bit annoyed in the first part still comes through (I think), he didn't seem to be so totally relaxed and uninhibited like he was for instance on the two Conan Shows or on Ellen (ooooh, I am so looking forward to this years Ellen show with him...), but in the second viewing I definitely got a better feeling that he was enjoying himself.
And of course there were many enjoyable moments. When he laughs/ giggles I just melt to a puddle on the floor... Sigh
And what? He would have liked to be a farmer? Although I doubt that this is true..., but hey Jake, you know I have an engineers degree in agronomy? I could teach you a lot!!

Oh, and how I want to see this movie! Just a little bit more than a month to wait for me...

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Well done to TL,for getting this recorded and over to WDW so quickly, and to WDW for getting it posted here so promptly in the early hours.

If you read my comment in the previous post to this, you'll know that I thought Jake was adorable, despite some less than tasteful jokes and dubious interviewing skills from Jonathan Ross. I just wish I had time to watch it back now and enjoy it just for Jake, unpolluted by a certain "glamour" model and her husband.

I shall be back to wallow in it with you all later, but before RL takes over for a while,I will be dropping in quickly on the Gyllenhaalics on Jake's board to direct them over here to see the video. THey'll be so chuffed to see a Jake's British TV appearance so quickly!

See you all in a while...

What happened to Jake on the biography channel? He's listed but it never showed.

Anonymous said...

Hi all,

I just watched the second half again, and I thought Jake did very well, his timing was great with the swimming quips, and he did such a good job explaining the rendition process, and his role as Douglas. That clip from the film was wonderful, I didn't find it spoilery, just another bit of info that makes me want to see it even more, at least that's how I felt about it. I forgot to mention the great Meryl Streep in that clip, and how she gets her accents and dialects so down pat. It's one of the things I have always found so amazing about her acting, ever since Sophie's Choice.

Anonymous said...

THANK YOU so much for the video!! What a exciting thing to come here and be able to see Jake be his usual charming, adorable self on JR. I think he did the best he could in the beginning. Although the video doesn't show the initial stupid BBM joke, JR did I think he complimented BBM and Jake. Sure Rendition could have been talked about more and even Zodiac, but I think as the segments went on it was great. Really glad JR liked Rendition and complimented Jake a lot on that. Loved Jake and his swimming, LOL! Overall a great interview! As much as I don't like Jordan and Peter Andre, I would be very curious to see Jake's reactions to them and maybe that video will show up.

Again, THANK you for the video!

Where is the modern systems of CIA. Where are the modern cameras and microfone etc... The people whose are victim of torture confess things that they didn't do. We can look in the past...The great scientist Galileu must say by the church that the Earth were the center of Universe...This is a very old question. Every week I see here in Germany worse and worse news about the american army!
The week before last was a scandal the privade soldier whose killed people of Irak. This war is a typical colonial war whose the governments send all criminal people to empty their prisons and explore the dominate country.
This scandal is one of worse scandals whose we know. And jake Gyllenhaal...to have a child is very easy but to give education and principle is enormous difficult1 You can see what kind of generation has USA at present. They see all this massacre and they are making nothing against.

Anonymous said...

Anon,it would be a terrible mistake to define a generation or a country by the excesses of a few. There are a great many people in America who find many of the things that have occurred in the past six years utterly reprehensible. And they are actively working to stop the infringements on human rights. Gavin Hood said that, if we are going to change who we are or what we believe in, that's pretty serious and we need to have a conversation about it. A lot of people feel that way. Many people acknowledge the difficulty with balancing the need to address national security concerns with the need to protect people's individual rights. Right now, the ACLU and other organizations are actively engaged with the United States Congress to revise FISA to stop some of these infringements. There are people in the United States who are outraged and profoundly ashamed of the notion that such things are done with the official sanction of our government, proporting to represent us. As for individual criminal acts, of course they are repugnant. No one dismisses or condones them. But they should not define any country or any generation. They are criminal acts done by individuals.

As for JR and BBM. I've thought about it. I agree that Jake seemed put off or uncomfortable.I was reminded of something I read/heard a while ago.Once an actor has finished a film role, they like to look forward and go to the next thing, not something that happened three or four years ago. Especially when they have done other work since then. So while I expected JR to perhaps mention Jake's other work, for him to do what he did was rather disappointing. I loved BBM. It is one of my all time favorite films. I think Jake and Heath did an amazing, incredible job, and the characters were heart-breaking. In fact, that particular scene is one that I always find wrenching. But I tried to imagine Heath being there to promote TDK and I couldn't imagine them doing the same thing to Heath.
While obviously BBM was groundbreaking, and beautiful, and the performances pure poetry, Jake's done other work, too. And he puts his heart and soul into everything he does. He focuses on it and he concentrates and gives 1000% to it. So IMHO, while BBM was singularly important from both a social and an artistic perspective, I think to ignore his other work is grossly unfair. Swoffard in Jarhead is a very iconic figure. Jake's work with Fincher was certainly worth talking about. But really! How can you give so little attention to Rendition! There was so much they could have discussed. Things I would have enjoyed hearing. About working in Morocco. About the other actors. About the locations. Anecdotes about the film shoot. I'm sure Jake was prepared with his stories, but no one seemed to care. They were looking backward instead of forward. For me, Jack Twist was very important. I feel even a bit protective of him. He is special. But I loved Homer, and Donnie, Holden, Robert Graysmith, Swoff and Douglas, too. I just think JR had an opportunity and he blew it. He decided to do something pat and obvious and glib for it's "entertainment value" something he proabaly felt was easier instead of crediting his audience as more sophisticated. Yes, I felt the interview was entertaining. I thought Jake was adorable and poised and everything I hoped he'd be. Jake never ever disappoints. He is rare in that at a very young age he can handle almost any situation and make it work. I just wish the people he talked to were a bit more up to it.

Anonymous said...

Amen, Bobbyanna! Very well said and I couldn't agree with you more. We know Jake loved and respects his work in BBM. But at this point it didn't need to be the opening scene they showed. Sure I liked that Ross praised the film and Jake's work. However putting the scene in took a bit of time away from talking about Rendition or other things important to Jake. I also am a bit frustrated that because Jonathan asked about Jake's personal life that that has become the main thing some people are talking about on other boards. It was a small moment and now his answer seems to be the focus of the interview. Anyway, I thought Jake did an excellent job and kudos to him for being a true class act!

Anonymous said...

Bobbyanna and GetReal -- exactly! Jake always comes through no matter what, but it's a shame so many of his interviewers aren't as smart as he is. JR (who appears to be smart enough) could have presented a truly intelligent, interesting, unique AND funny segment with Jake -- Jake is all those things and more -- but he chose to only attempt funny. His loss. And ours. Jake must deal with whatever comes at him, and he was great. "Class act," indeed!

And thanks TL and WDW for the videos. Man, you are quick!

Anonymous said...

YouTube: If you search for 'Jonathan Ross' and then sort by date, it's the most recent set of vids posted by the BBC.

And as for Jake. As lovely as he is, he is an actor. The overanalysis of what he has/hasn't said/done/implied says more about the undue attention we give to unelected celebrities than it does about Jake's political responsibilities.

Anonymous said...

Great job at uploading everything so quickly. As for the interview, I liked it because I got to see Jake, funny, witty and charming as per usual, though as others have said, would have been better if Ross had concentrated more on Jake's recent work rather than something he did almost 2 years ago. It was insulting to say the least. As for Jake, he always handles himself well, he fits everywhere and I do agree he looked dissapointed, a mere reflection of all of us who were expecting a little more. I will always love Jack Twist, he'll forever be special, but I rather know more about Jake and his recent work than the characters he portrayed in the past, no matter how dear they are to me. I'm looking forward to next week...badly!

Anonymous said...

BMG, can you dumb that down for me even more, I cannot find the behind the scenes video with Jake and the other guests? Possible to post it here?

Pia, that couch looked positively uncomfortable. I think Jake thought the same thing. You could tell by his body language, he was constantly shifting and he actually punched the couch right as he sat down.

Yes, Anon, on other talk shows I have noticed his likes to lean back and also when he can cross his legs. he had to sit sorta hunched up on this low couch. Id like to see some of the other guests manage this piece of furniture.

Immesurable thanks to Twisted Logic and WDW for getting us Yanks this video so quickly. Awkward as Mr. Ross may have made it, Jake was as charming as always, and I agree he seemed rather uncomfortable on that couch. Is that their normal couch? Because it sucks. LOL! I think if he'd been there longer Jake probably would have just stretched out on it as if being analyzed. What else does one do with such a poorly designed piece of furniture?

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hey Cherita :-) I think maybe there's a bit of underhand psychology going on in the choice of furniture onthe JR show,JR himself in a plush, ergonomic swivel chair and his guests stuck at a lower level on a really uncomfortable sofa, especially for someone of Jake's height. It's the sort of tactic used by interviewers grilling candidates for a job, subliminally instilling a feeling of inferiority in them before the interview has even started.

Jonathan Ross is notoriously fond of the sound of his own voice and he enjoys nothing more than getting the better of his guests and winning the majority of humorous exchanges...but he wasn't going to get the better of one Jake Gyllenhaal Esquire, regardless of what tactics he might employ. He met his match and then some last night!

I've just watched it back again and fair's fair,JR was fulsome in his praise of Jake's talent, his back catalogue and the forthcoming "Rendition" and Jake was just everything we knew he would be,funny, charming, undaunted in the face of certain provocations, intelligent, immaculately turned out, entertaining from start to finish and a gentleman to his fingertips.

I'm sure he will have boosted the box office for "Rendition" no end and attracted a whole new phalanx of admirers as well as making all his die-hard fans fall in love with him all over again. His brief appearance on the BBC 10 o'clock news and his forthcoming interview with Frank Gardner, will, I'm sure, pull in an even wider demographic of devotees, attracted by his intellect as well as his great talent and easy bonhomie.

Sorry,I'm gushing,I know, but I'm just so damned proud of him for handling himself so well last night in an interview situation which has made many a lesser man crumble. Good on yer,Jake!

Wonder how WDW and co have enjoyed themselves in London today. With WDW's sixth sense on Jaking matters, coupled with her dogged determination, I wouldn't bet against her getting back here and posting an account of how she and our Gyllen-sisters tracked Jake down this afternoon before he left London and sweet-talked an interview out of him for this Mega-blog in his honour. Watch this space ;-)

I am sorry to say Bobbyanna. Nowadays the the american folk is very resigned and the most part of them don't take iniciative for nothing!
I believe that a little groups are trying to protest against this war. But we can compare the protest against the Vietna war in USA in the past. In second war the actor Victor Mature was in Normandie and when the 2 atomic bombs exploded in Japan he was nearby in Okinawa... Mohamed Ali must to go to the prison because he wouldn't like to go to Vietna!!
In the past there were another kind of men too. Hollywood wasn't this small republic of people without background and people with undel social level. Nowadays for under cultural level whose the film industry of Hollywood are victim...this film Rendition is too much for the small mentality that they have!!!

Hi my friends :) I'm back after a wonderful day spent Jaking around London in fabulous company - such a warm day, I have no idea why Jake needed that scarf today, I kept losing layers all over the place. Any day during which I can drink a cosmopolitan or two has got to be good.

Thanks to you all for your comments and for your appreciation to Twisted Logic for her efforts - it was a very late night for us last night. I have now put her two other videos up on the site.

Anon 13:43 - sorry to hear Jake's Biography wasn't on - it was certainly in my TV listing so I don't know what happened there. It was a repeat however and can be found at IHJ.

It's interesting the mixed feelings that have been expressed about Jonathan's opener focusing on Brokeback, presenting Jake with a clip he'd seen a million times. While I would prefer an interviewer to focus on recent films- and I think Zodiac was well worth a mention and applause - as a respected film reviewer, Jonathan Ross clearly loves and admires Brokeback Mountain and recognises that this was a crucial role in Jake's career. You do a great film like that and you're going to be reminded of it.

I rewatched the interview today a couple of times and, perhaps as I was feeling more relaxed, I enjoyed it far more and could see that Jake was enjoying himself, although I think he was a little shocked by some of Jonathan's 'banter' with Jordan.

Oh yes, that's definitely a very uncomfortable couch! Cherita - that probably explains why Jake hit it just after he sat down :)

Some wonderful comments here about Rendition and Jake's roles past and present. Thank you so much for your discussion.

Twisted Logic - thank you! And thank you for uploading Jools Holland for Marina :)

Welcome to all new commentors :) I hope to see you again and it would be so good to have names for you - welcome Irit and Chestnut

Thanks for the thanks, everyone:) But there's honestly no need, it was my pleasure to do it. I'm always hugely grateful to everyone who puts the clips from outside the UK up for us, so I'm happy to be able to return the favour:)

Having watched the interview again, and read all your comments, I hve to say my views haven't changed much witn regards to the talk about BBM and Rendition. I do agree with those of you who say it would've been nice if other films had been mentioned, like Zodiac or Jarhead but this wasn't the right type of show to go into that much depth about Jake's career, and there wouldn't be enough time anyway (It would take something like a Jake Gyllenhaal South Bank special for that- now there's a thought!).
As JR said, UK audiences know Jake best for his performance in BBM, so I think it was only natural to remind the audience who he is, for those who loved BBM but somehow managed not to succumb to acute Gyllenhaalism and may not have known about Rendition. People will be more likely to go and see Rendition once they realise it's the same guy from BBM. And JR clearly rates BBM very highly and as far as I know, has never had the opportunity to talk about it with Jake, so it seemed quite natural to me. I would do exactly the same given the chance. Interviewing Jake and not mentioning BBM is like interviewing Paul McCartney and not mentioning The Beatles, to me anyway:)
They could have not bothered with the City Slickers bit and devoted the time to Rendition, but hey...
I do think there will be more serious and in depth talk about Rendition in Film 2007 and The Culture Show.

Overall,I thoughtJake was his usual charming, funny, witty self and I loved every minute. I still lol when he says he has to go and swim back!!

"But I tried to imagine Heath being there to promote TDK and I couldn't imagine them doing the same thing to Heath."

Definitely, Heath strikes me as the kind of guy who doesn't like such jokes. Jake seems quite self-confident, he doesn't seem to take everything too seriously or is easily offended whereas Heath seems to take things more seriously or gets offended more easily.

Rendition isn't a special film because this film has the theme violence. the people are used ton it. If the people are victim of violence themselves they complain about because they has been affect. Hollywood make most part of their films with violent themes. The cript isn't special too because they only give attention for a scandal and there are lot of scandals that CIA and american army are involved. The theme whose attract the attention of people is the personal life of actors and are selling several magazines and give profit for them.
In personal lifes of Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon the people can learn how you can fool your friend and husband. You can foll your friend when you get out or make exercise with the same coach for exemple...Or use the same dress of Kirsten Dunst in a Golden Globe and seems like the lover Jake Gyllenhaal had...
Lot of people depend on those dirty tricks to get better position in their works or became a men or women with more money. Nowadays this is the situation whose are more present in lifes of people and our decadent society.
