Jake - 'I feel like I'm a joyous person... I'm kooky, but I'm not crazy'

In comments in past weeks, I have heard quite a bit about the New Yorker publication and so I thought today I'd post an article that the New Yorker published in July 2002 about the Sad-eyed siblings Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal. It presents a funny snapshot of the pair of them together - one senses they bicker - and their bemusement at how they are cast. 'The Gyllenhaals say they're not sure why directors are always asking them to play depressed misfits. "I feel like I'm a joyous person," Jake said. "More and more, I want to do less kooky characters. I'm kooky, but I'm not crazy." "I think both of us have sad eyes," Maggie said. "Do I have sad eyes?" Jake asked. "They go down a little bit on the side." "Do I have cow eyes?"

Zodiac (and Jake) on Sky

Zodiac receives its premiere on UK TV tonight, on the pay per view Sky Box Office channel. To mark the event, I've heard that clips of Jake Gyllenhaal being interviewed about Rendition are floating around the other Sky channels tonight. I don't have Sky myself but an informer (ie my mother) tells me that he has a full beard and is wearing a suit and not a blue sweatshirt/t-shirt. So, in other words, the interview probably doesn't date from Jake's flying visit to the UK but from the film's promotion in LA. So if you have the wherewithal, please keep your eyes peeled!

The Radio Times has given Zodiac four stars and says: 'Eschewing his usual trademark visual trickery, Fincher delivers a powerful, matter-of-fact tale. It's like a serial killing All the President's Men, with meticulous attention to detail that makes even the most inactive scenes crackle with energy.' In another feature, Barry Norman, possibly the UK's most venerable movie critic, focuses on the career of Zodiac's Robert Downey Jr. At the moment, it is possible that the UK edition of the Director's Cut of Zodiac will be out at the same time as the US version, 8 January.

Vote for Jake

Matt Damon may have been voted as People magazine's sexiest man alive, but Cinematical is giving its readers a chance to strike back for their favorite. Jake is not doing at all well, with men I've never heard of above him and The Rock at the head of the list. This is despite a stunning Cannes pic and the legend: 'He's smart, he's sensitive, and oh, those eyes! From Brokeback Mountain to Zodiac, Jake Gyllenhaal has proved his versatility on the screen, but does he have the charisma to be the Sexiest Man?' I may be wrong, but I think you can only vote once, so it will take you but a second. The well known figure 'None of the Above' is doing particularly well.

Oooh of course I've been to Cinematical and voted for Jake!! And I've never heard of some of them either. But let's face it, they could have the whole world listed..and I'd still be voting Jake the sexiest man alive..because he IS.

Great news about Jake being on sky!!! Not so great news, that I haven't got it. duh. Oh well...and that would be fantastic if we are getting the Directors cut in the UK same at the same time as the US..sort of makes up a bit for having to wait so much longer for the original. Shame it's not this side of Christmas...or I could be buying it for all and sundry as gifts...not that I try to force my friends and family to become Gyllenhaalics of course...

And THANK YOU for the link to the New Yorker article..I hadn't seen that before..and I do love Jake's earlier interviews..nearly as much as I love his eyes...sigh..

Hi Rosie! Thanks for commenting :D That's true enough, you'd have thought it would be flippin obvious and these votes unnecessary ;)

I've 'persuaded' various people to watch Zodiac and they've all liked it. It'll be good to have it to look forward to in the New Year.

I love this early interview - very sweet and funny and makes me think that there's never a minutes' peace aroud the Gyllenhaal dinner table :D

The Gs around the dinnertable must be a hoot. and now they've got Peter, too. I hope R has a funnybone. I've watched the Donnie Darko scene between Jake and Maggie at the dinner table a number of times, must have been fun to do: Jake said it was easy, familiar. I also cry when Maggie is grief stricken at the end of the film. For those of you who might not know, M didnt want Jake on the set for this scene.

I now have laryingitis. Can I blame Jake Esquire picture for this, also? Yes. I guess I am really "speechless"!!! :( :(

Hi Positively Pia - I hope you feel better much soon. I'm not well myself today :(

I remember hearing about the end of Donnie Darko and I think that made it all the more powerful and distressing for me when I saw it again at the weekend. It's impossible not to cry watching Maggie at the end there. A bit close to home. Take care *)

p.s. for Jake

The Taste Of Love Is Sweet
When Hearts Like Ours Meet
I Fell For You Like A Child
Oh, But The Fire Went Wild

I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

And It Burns, Burns, Burns
The Ring Of Fire
The Ring Of Fire

apologies, friends, if this is TMI

Pia, I love the way Jake moves you *)

or else maybe I have a temperature. sorry you're feeling unwell also WDW. Imm wondering if a wee dram will help.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I've got a high temperature too - I think I'll test your remedy ;)

"Pia, I love the way Jake moves you *)"

And I love the way Jake moves - doesnt he take the stage, in the Esq. cover?

twistedlogic said...

Sorry you're not feeling well, WDW and Pia - hugs to you both:)

Thanks for the New Yorker interview, WDW! I've read it before but I love to re-discover these things:)

I've voted for Jake in that poll too, not that it'll do much good as it looks like "The well known figure 'None of the Above'" (LOL!) and Tom Mellor (whoever he may be!) have it sown up between them. The article says "Sexy is so subjective, it's really impossible to say conclusively that this particular guy is truly THE sexiest man alive, isn't it?" and normally I would agree in principle but when it's Jake and he's looking like he does in that Cannes pic...well I'm sorry but it's not subjective at all- it's bleeding obvious!!!

WDW, did your mum say which Sky channels these clips are on? I don't have Sky Movies but I've got the Box Office previews on and there's nothing on there so far:(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL! Who on earth is Tom Mellor? How anyone on earth can be immune to the sexiness of Cannes Jake is beyond me. My mum only watches Movies and Sport so I reckon it must have been in between films. Sky interviews tend to turn up on the net so we'll have to keep our eyes open. What a day :\

twistedlogic said...

Oops! I meant Tom WELLING (he's in Smallville apparently). I think I must have got him muddled up with Will Mellor - someone told me that he's in some drama thing on BBC1 on Thursday playing a gay builder *drool* so I must have had that on my mind;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL - I'm none the wiser as I've never heard of Tom Welling either - but one thing I do know is this, he's not as sexy as our Jake ;) I'm going to catch the end of TDAT now... I have a feeling it'll end well :D

Anonymous said...

I always think Tom Welling looks just like Cillian Murphy.

Get well soon, Pia and WDW **

twistedlogic said...

No-one is as sexy as our Jake, even if someone people out there just don't get it. they'll learn...;)

Enjoy TDAT, WDW :) If they were ever going to do a sequel right now outside my window would be the time to do it - it's chucking down! And of course, if Jake needed to come in and dry off and get warm he'd be most welcome;)
Sweet dreams!

The Rock? Seriously....the Rock is # 1 in that Cinematical poll? Geez...well I voted for our darling...he should be right at the top...but..there is no accounting for taste..yeah. Thanks WDW..for a wonderful posting...and the link to the article..Michele

This is a good point in TDAT to write a comment - it's the bit where one falls through the shopping mall roof.

I know TL - we've had a taste of TDAT weather here too - snow, hail, torrential rain, sunshine and rainbows. That's very kind of you to offer Jake a warm sanctuary :D

Thanks Anouska - so good to see you on your new PC!

Hey Michele! - the only thing The Rock has going for him is I've heard of him. I enjoyed The Mummy's Return but sexy? Thanks for commenting :)

Anouska! congrats on new PC, because it means you'll be more around and about, as befits your stylish ways! Yay.

Guys, uh...the results list isn't presented in order. Jake's number 4 right now, behind Tom Welling, none of the above, and Christian Bale. Personally, I say the fewer people who realize that Jake is the absolute sexiest human being alive, the better the chances for those who do. :D

Anonymous said...

Jake is number three after Welling and None of the Above (barely).

So sorry you're feeling awful WDW and Pia:(
TY for the New Yorker article. That magazine kept me sane when I was wandering the states living here and there.
How sweet, unaffected and unspoiled they both were...still are.
I voted of course, and I know things will look up for our Jakey because the troops are rallied on iheartjake:):)

Speaking of Jake... and who else would I speak of...I just bought a DRM free mp3--Mad World of the Donnie Darko album, from Amazon's new beta mp3 service via DCF. I lost that track when I had to replace my OS last August...and now I am Oh so happy!
love you all,
sass

Get well soon WDW! I too had read that New Yorker article awhile back, always nice to re-read it though, thanks. Also, love your little Jake and Maggie cartoon pic, so cute!

When I seen the Cinematical poll a day or so ago, I didn't hesitate to put my vote in for Jake right away. I know all the men in the poll, but certainly wouldn't agree with quite a few of them even making the poll as the sexiest....the Rock does nothing for me, lol. Jake's in 3rd place, sigh....

Tom Welling is quite handsome I have to say, but Jake is sexier and should be #1 in the poll. We'll see how it progresses.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone :) Thanks for the well wishes, they did the trick as I'm much better thie morning, even got into work (not so good ;) )

Hi Cherita! They can't expect my brain to cope with a list not in order, surely :D

Good to see Jake climbing through the night - thanks Anon. None of the Above is doing very well, isn't he?

Morning Sass - I love that whole album :)

Hi Jantoinette - Jake's in third place?! I wonder where he is now (I can't check at work), so if anyone knows...

God, I misread Tom Mellor for David Mellor and nearly passed out (apologies, you've probably got to be British to realise quite how horrific the thought of him beating Jake was!), teach me to start surfing before having my fill of coffee.

Very exciting that the directors cut might not be too far away.

I always cry at the end of DD, even the first time I saw it in the cinema and didn't realise the girl playing Elizabeth was his real life sister

Yes, I voted for Jake!

We have a new gal at my office who noticed all my pics of Jake, especially my computer desktop. She actually knew his name and pronounced it correctly! Well, she IS young. She said she saw him on a talk show and was very surprised he is so funny -- she had no idea. Made me laugh! She also loves Donnie Darko. Methinks I have a new, empathetic RL friend with excellent taste! How refreshing.

Get well soon, WDW!

I don't understand all these "sexiest man alive" vote.. i mean, like the People one, if Matthew McBongo was the sexiest man alive before, then I am not sure I want Jake to top THAT poll :)

I think Jake is sexy, but in a more vulnerable way... like my friend once said, "you want to sleep with him and then give him a cookie" :P

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Agent K and Beckela! David Mellor!! Ugh.... Glad to hear your friend is seeing the light Beckela - good job :D

Winterbird - you want to sleep with him and then give him a cookie - That is hysterical!! (and quite possibly true ;))

This is just a flier to say hi,I'm thinking of you all and have,of course, dropped over to Cinematical to vote for Jake, who is now in third behind None of the Above and Tom Welling, who is cute enough but there are hundreds like him,so I suppose his Smallville fanbase have put him inexplicably streets ahead in this poll!

I haven't been downloading each daily post,WDW,since I got my hideous mobile bill, but the very lovely Lovely has been e-mailing me the text of your posts, which is much better than nothing, and I've caught up on a few links and pics today! Yum!

Apparently the problem with my mother-***** PC,sorry that should be the problem with my PC is the mother-board, and once my chap has sourced and fitted a new one, I should be back with you properly once more...and it won't be a moment too soon for me!!

(((Hugs)))to everyone,
Nadine xx

I would happily give Jake cookies any time he wanted them. Maybe Maggie would, too, after playing that bakery shop owner in "Stranger than fiction". ;-)
She told an interviewer that she learned a lot about baking from that film, as well as "Great New Wonderful."

Yes, Jake is funny, but we have to watch talk shows to see him at his funniest. Is that any way to have to live? :-(

Interesting little tidbits:

"...reduced a still-scarred Jake Gyllenhaal to the fetal position..."

"...Jake Gyllenhaal as a Brooklyn web designer who catches fleeting sight of Natalie Portman on the Number Five train..."

And I TOTALLY voted for Jake in Cinematical. It's practically an obligation for me.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone! Made it back at long last after the longest day in history - almost 6 hours of commutin today... :(

Good to see you Nadine - sorry it's frustrating and I hope that things will be on the mend very soon. That's great that Lovely's been sending you the text of the posts - makes me feel less guilty ;)

Hi Sass - much much better today, thanks :D Hopefully Pia is too. And I hope you can get the rest of the album soon. I was listening to it on the way home today (along with Santana ;))

Hey Paul good to see you :) I bet that Maggie and Jake are both such good bakers. Definitely true that we should get more Jake, get more funny lines from him and just seem more of him - in return we could give him all the cookies he could eat :D

Hi Fourplay! You must be a mind reader, one of those is in the new post. I saw that other story. Wouldn't it be great if you could get Jake involved in a film of your life! This sounds like definite wishful thinking to me but I like their taste ;)
