Jake jokes about love, women, sex, being hairy and wanting to make the Lance movie

Sometimes I think Gyllendom does it on purpose - I finish today's post with the glorious news that Jake is on the cover of December's Genius Issue of Esquire (please don't miss it - see below), only to finish and find a new interview with Jake in the Inquirer. This interview comprises a series of quotes from a press conference that Jake participated in for the publicity for Rendition, and they include some wonderful, lighthearted comments about Brokeback, his family, Ramona, women, sex, and Peter, and - wait for it - The Lance movie! It was too good to wait for tomorrow so here are some of my favourite quotes.

As the reporter begins 'Perhaps Jake Gyllenhaal was just in a joking mood. Or maybe, because his mom, scriptwriter Naomi Foner, was around, he wanted to keep the press con light... Jake always gives humor-tinged interviews, but on this particular Sunday morning, he was especially funny. Even on the few answers that he managed to be somewhat serious, he couldn’t help but end them with amusing quips.'

Q: Are you looking forward to being a father someday?
JG: I know what a responsibility that is, and I don’t say that in a romantic sense. It requires presence of mind and selflessness. I don’t know if I have those qualities just yet, but being a dad is something that I look forward to.

Q: You and Peter shaved your heads in “Jarhead.” Now, you both have beards.
JG: Peter and I are dating (laughter). I can see the headlines now. Seriously, I look up to him. If he shaves his goatee, I’ll also shave mine (laughter).

Q: Did you grow your beard for a role? Do you like wearing one?
JG: Peter is merely doing it for vanity—he’s really vain and full of himself (laughter). We all know he’s a bad actor, so he needs to cover himself up. I, on the other hand, am doing it for a role (in “Brothers”). I’m playing a character who spends time in jail in the first part of the movie... It’s gotten to a point of weirdness, because usually I grow my facial hair and it’s okay. If it becomes itchy, I shave it. But now, I have to keep the beard for the movie even if I want to shave it!

Q: What qualities do you admire in Reese, as a person and an actress?
JG: She can grow a mean beard, that’s for sure (laughter)! I don’t know if you’ve seen her beard—it’s amazing! She’s one of the best actresses of her generation—that’s the truth. She’s an incredible mother—she’s devoted to her life and her work. But, every actor I look up to values his life over his work.

Q: Will you comment on rumors that you are dating Reese?
JG: No. Apparently, I am dating a lot of people, not only of the opposite sex (laughter)—it’s very interesting and amusing.

Q: You talked freely during that interview. You have become a star since. So, has your sex life changed?
JG: I’ve become an ascetic—I live in a cave now. That’s why I am growing a beard. I have no sex, so I’m much more interesting!

Q: What have you learned about women from your mother and famous sister?
JG: I grew up with a particular type of woman—both my sister and mother know what they believe in. I respect a woman’s mind. I believe that women hold much of the power and energy in the world... My respect for every woman I meet comes from them. But, anybody can open his eyes and spend some time with a woman and see how extraordinary—sex is (laughing)!

Q: Did you make it (riding in the Alps for the our de France with Lance)?
JG: Yes, I did (laughing). You don’t ride the Alps with Lance Armstrong and not make it. The movie’s not definite yet. Matt Damon is developing it, so it’s his movie at this point. But, I would love to play Lance and make a movie about cycling, because it’s my favorite sport.

Q: You’re not a Republican. How is it like to have a friend like Lance who’s a staunch Republican?
JG: I don’t discriminate. I have many friends who express different opinions. You can have some fun that way. Otherwise, you’re just in a bubble!

This is probably one of the best and nicest interviews with him I've read. Thanks, WDW!

Awww, refreshing *

Whizzing past as usual, WDW :)

Hi Marina - isn't it wonderful? So hard picking out a few things. I hate doing two osts on one night but this deserved a post of its own.

Good to see you Anouska! Have a safe trip home *)

Hey Anon - you know me but I don't know you, but thanks for that. If you find a printed copy of that let me know :)

Glad you found this transcript, WDW! I just got done with it myself when I came back here to see if you'd seen it yet. :D

It is positively priceless! I don't care what anyone else thinks. Jake is brilliant and hilarious and totally effing adorable.

It's great to see he can still laugh at the rumours.

Hey Cherita - Jake is brilliant and hilarious and totally effing adorable. - Damn right!!

that was a fun interview... and he seems to be in a good mood.

oh... but am i the only one here who doesn't want him to be in that Lance bio-pic? sorry Jake, can't share your enthusiaum on this!

Wow! I feel Im really on an express train with this man! LOVED the pictures from Esquire! - he's a star he's a star! and funny and handsome and playful - I just love him to death! Also, I want to BE him.

However Im not sure I want to marry him. (even though I did have this personal re-committment ceremony, so probably I do. . .)

Frankly, I hated that interview. "Pretty effing funny", to channel Jon Stewart. I can become irritated with Jake's so-called irony. Sometimes it feels to me very smart alecy and not fan-friendly. I must admit Ive just finished listening to the commentary on Bubble Boy which is very good, and very funny - and I am terribly impressed by Jake's gifts - formidable! - but Ive a new appreciation as to how tough and savy he is - good for him! -

but man, his mom was around for this interview - which gives me some idea of the kinda kidding that goes on in this family, and I frankly dont feel it's necessarily fan friendly.

Yell at me if you will! - but what Im saying to MYSELF is: love this man, enjoy him, adore him, want to BE him, but don't WORRY about him -nor make him into any kind of Jesus figure - he's an effing STAR - enjoy the ride!

HiWinterbird I don't have a big problem with the idea of a Lance pic, largely because of my Spandex Jake fetish.

What a great comment Positively Pia. I hugely appreciate you sharing that personal vision of Jake here. For me, I find Jake extremely fascinating intellectually and enjoy a lot of what he says while shaking my head at the same time. So I know what you mean about it not all being 'fan friendly'. But a big part of me loves these games, loves the wit, loves the general 'naughtiness', even though, to some extent, it is making a mockery of our devotion, blind as it can be at times. I believe you are right - Jake is formidable and he is tough and I love him for it. I also love how you relate to Jake Pia. There is much to love, enjoy, adore, whilst realising that there is much we will never know - just as it should be. Great comment, thanks *)

Personally, I love this kind of humor, and I love that Jake is so adept at it. And even more, I love the idea of Jake's laughing at the rumors, and everything that entails.

Since a large part of Jake's fandom is decidedly less than friendly to him, my attitude is: If you can dish it out, you'd better be able to take it.

but don't WORRY about him -nor make him into any kind of Jesus figure - he's an effing STAR - enjoy the ride!

True words, Pia, sums up my feelings exactly. Although it´s quite good to know that some of the crazyness out there is not affecting him at all, even though that includes probably the whole fandom he has. He´s a wicked, sane person, that JG.

Great work, great blog, WDW! Thanks!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Fortunately UV the fanbase here is friendly and enjoying and loving Jake's humour. I can't get enough of it :D I personally believe that the vast majority of Jake's fans feel the same.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey, welcome Lucy! Thanks for the comment and for enjoying the site :D

Anonymous said...

hey, Lucy - "wicked and sane!" I love it! yeah, I DO want to BE him - well, jeeze, if I werent commuting four hours a day, I AM him! :) :)

And UV, yes, I love the so-called effing irony! Jake'll give the finger to one and all! more power to him!

Anonymous said...

p.s. however, I do draw the line at Jake doing a Lance biopic. I worry about his family jewels and all that bike riding. (PIA! stop yr worrying!)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia - yet again I marvel at your selflessness, putting your concern and care for Jake's family jewels above your desire for another film role ;)

Cherita said...

Since a large part of Jake's fandom is decidedly less than friendly to him, my attitude is: If you can dish it out, you'd better be able to take it.

Bravo, UV. I absolutely love that Jake is not sickly sweet with reporters, especially when he's already faced unwelcome and unnecessary interest in his personal life. He doesn't owe these people, or us, any more of himself than he's willing to put out there. And Jake manages (IMO) never to come across as rude, unless someone's already been blatantly rude to him. His use of that razor wit to keep some distance is one of the things I most admire about the man.

Anonymous said...

thank you WDW. since Jakewatch is defunct, I may start my own site: Jakesballs. its almost as crucial as global warming! (and Im not kidding!) in my worthless haha, right opinion.

Anonymous said...

yes he is very sharp and savy, Cherita. bless his soul! And Im not kidding!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

You're right Cherita - Jake is a master at deflecting questions, giving answers that entertain and fascinate. He makes me laugh out loud and this has made my Friday evening :D

Anonymous said...

Thanks WDW and Pia :)
Concerning the GooberBalls: There is nothing better than having healthy priorities, Pia! Great minds think alike.

UV: Razor sharp as always.

Cheers, WDW, Pia, Cherita and Lucy! And thanks to Jake for giving us an end-of-the-week treat :)

Oops - that was me. And I haven't even started the end-of-the-week cocktails!

This is definitely a great, great way to start the weekend UV- I swear I've not stopped smiling all evening :D Esquire and now this. I've got the whiskey out myself - so cheers everyone :)

Hey WDW! What a brilliant find! Thank you so much! That was so funny, I can't pick a highlight:D But I just LOVE Jake's humour, he's so sharp and his timing is excellent. He really really needs to do a comedy! Or at least an episode of The Simpsons! The thing is also, now that I've seen him in so many interviews, the writtn interviews come across even better cos I can totally hear him and picture him saying this stuff, which just makes it even funnier.

As for him maybe having a dig at the fans, or some of them...Well,I have to agree with UV to an extent, if you can't take it, don't dish it out. And I have to include myself in that, cos there have been a few times when Jake has said or done things that have really pissed me off.I know he couldn't care less, and why would he, he doesn't know me and I don't him, which is why I don't take it personally and why I would hope Jake doesn't take some of the nastier stuff said about him personally either. I think we as fans, and Jake as the object of our affection/admiration/adoration/lust/whatever, need to concentrate on what we do have access to, like Jake's films and interviews and pics, and Jake needs to appreciate the positive side of his fandom, like the "thinking women" who go to see his films and buy his DVDs, and travel halfway round the world to support him at events:)
Yeah, sometimes I wonder why I bother but at the end of the day, I come here and I remember. Thanks WDW (and all of you here) xx

twistedlogic said...

Sorry to post again, but just had to say Pia, your "Jakesballs" quote made me lol!

sass said...

TY TY Kate:)
This is one of the funniest best Jake interviews I've read in a long long time. He's one tough dude.

Maybe I should stop worrying about him, because obviously he can take care of himself, and yes, he's totally effing adorable.

Do you think he's read or heard-- through those people who send him things--what some of these blog people are saying about his relationship with you know who?. Duh. Like yeah, and backacaha says Mr. Gyllenhaal.

I think his rapier wit is marvelous, and considering some of his fan base, I applaud it totally.

chillinwitgyllen said...

Hey everyone, I love this interview especially what he says about women. Clearly he has been around very intelligent and strong women and his respect is so profound. He's a guy that makes a lot of sense and isn't afraid to tell people just the way he feels regardless of how it makes him look. I respect people like this because I'm similar in that way. Too many people are walking around today feeding into everyone else's idea of what or who they should be. Jake's not buying into that and neither should anyone else. His humor is his way of fending off all the bullshit, it's an important quality to have. This is the kind of guy you want around. I think we all have very good taste :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL! I thought you'd like this :D And it's true, you can hear Jake saying these things and that just triples the effect. I definitely agree - the focus should be on Jake's films and his hotness!

Jake needs to appreciate the positive side of his fandom, like the "thinking women" who go to see his films and buy his DVDs, and travel halfway round the world to support him at events:) - this person sounds familiar! And can I say that this 'woman' displays perfect taste ;)

Thank you TL!

Hi Sass - it's a great interview and I love to think of us all listning to him.

CWG - what a great thing to say: This is the kind of guy you want around. I think we all have very good taste :) Most definitely!

Smileys People to calm me down.

g'nite lil darlins!

G'night Pia - Smiley's People is just wonderful. Have you seen Tinker Tailor? And you know what they say - never enough Jake, never enough.

Christie, if your still around, I just read an article online that said Broadway will most likely come to a resolution this weekend and plans to start running shows again next week. Your just in time. Enjoy :)

This interview is hilarious. He is delightful. Thanks, WDW. I saw the Esquire Magazine cover today, but had no time to look through it. Love the company Jake's in. I first noticed Emile Hirsh in Lords of Dogtown, the movie about the skateboarders that Heath Ledger did sometime ago...two years actually. Emile had some serious acting chops even then. There seems to be a lot of Oscar chatter about his performance in Into the Wild.Robert seems like devilish good fun to hang out with!

I was impressed by his remarks about women. Jake is probably one of the more evolved of the male species, LOL!!!
He was raised by a brilliant, amazingly gifted woman, a strong woman of principle, with a defined set of beliefs. He has a sister who is outspoken and very much an activist. It takes a man who is both strong and sensitive like his dad seems to be, to chose a woman like Naomi. When I say Jake is a more evolved person, I really mean it. He grew up and was very deliberately nurtured in an environment that really affects his view of the world. I love that about him. He functions in a much bigger world than a lot of people. Too many people base their lives on avoiding the things they fear. They put on blinders to avoid realities that shake up their world and make them uncomfortable. They avoid the truth, if it upsets them. Jake faces life so openly, and embraces it.I have such respect for his mother. What an amazing woman. She raised a principled, compassionate, intellectually curious young man...who also happens to be absolutely beautiful!I am deeply sorry, UV, for the cruelty that is born of weakness and cowardice and dishonesty. Jake is what I hope the future looks like. Too bad there are some people who can't understand or appreciate what a beautiful vision that is, and cherish it. Life really is too short for such nonsense. I cannot help but feel that sometimes those are the people who will be left behind as others move forward to a more enlightened time.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone :)

That's good news CWG!

Hi Bobbyanna - thanks for those great comments and I absolutely adore your description of Jake, which just resonates with your love and warmth for him. It made me feel good to read it *) She raised a principled, compassionate, intellectually curious young man...who also happens to be absolutely beautiful! - just perfect. And I love that curiosity, it coms acros in so much that Jake says and does.

Have a great Saturday :D

bobbyanna,
You can't imagine how much your comments resonate with me.
And yes, some will be left behind of their own volition, because of erroneous beliefs and petty opinions, that mean absolutely nothing, to anyone, in the world at large.
I couldn't have ever said it better...TY.

agent_krycek said...

Thank you for the interview, yet again I'm hugely impressed by Mr G - loved his comments about women (plus Stephen's comment about Naomi), and his handling of the various rumours was fantastic, although I'm pretty sure other sites will choose to interpret certain sections very differently. He does come across as a tough cookie in that interview, which is all good :D

Another one not that keen on and Lance project, although I'll dutifully go an watch it, buy the DVD etc etc. Do wish he'd do a really smart comedy with Robert Downey Jnr instead.

Anonymous said...

Agent Krycek (love the name; I had a huge crush on him for years!) -- I'm with you about a smart comedy with RDJr. That would be a hoot!

Love the interview. It proves once again we are not all simply teeny-bopper-like bonkers over Jake. His wit, charm and intelligence, not to mention talent, are 99.44% of why we are all here. His beauty is just icing on that amazing cake.

As you know,WDW,my PC has died the death again after only a few days back at home and is now with the Pooter-Surgeon for some CPR. Hence this is a hurried post in the library :-(

I've had to speed read your posts and haven't got time to read everyone's comments, which is a real pain in the backside. However, despite not being able to linger over these last 2 posts must say they are fab! Wonderful pictures and great news about the Esquire article praising Jake along with the glorious RDJ.

A belated happy birthday to the divine Miss M. and thanks for finding that Inquirer interview which I'm printing off on the library's super-slow printer to take home with me to ease my withdrawal symptoms on a Net free weekend :-(

Have a good time, all of you, hugs and a fond farewell until I'm sorted in cyber-space once more! xxxxxxx

I'm going to go out on a limb here and hope it doesn't get sawed off, but I am hoping this part of the interview was just a huge 'mistake.' Ewwwww! Noooo, Jake! Not the "Lance movie!" LOLOL!!!! That the interviewer stuck some stuff in and "padded" Jake's comments. Got his Matts mixed up.
Last we heard, didn't Matthew McBongo, Lance's BFF, have his own production company developing this project??? I cannot imagine Matt Damon taking it from McConaughey or duplicating his efforts. This is a made for TV story if I ever saw one and I am with those who don't want Jake to do it.While I'm sure Lance and Jake remain friendly, it seems like Jake is preoccupied with other projects...thank goddess!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sass - yep, I saw that, that's down for the next post, so ssshhhh :D

Hey Agent K - I would so love to see Jake do an intelligent comedy, particularly with RDJ. I can cope with the idea of the Lance project but that has more to do with spandex than anything else.

Good to see you Beckela - I love this: It proves once again we are not all simply teeny-bopper-like bonkers over Jake. His wit, charm and intelligence, not to mention talent, are 99.44% of why we are all here. His beauty is just icing on that amazing cake. Absolutely :D

Poor Nadine, back in the library :( I hope it gets fixed again very soon. If I hear any Jake news I'll email you.

Hi Bobbyanna - it does sound like one of those made for TV projects. It's possible Jake was just being polite. He'd hardly say in an interview that he would hate to star as his friend. Funny if the Matts are muddled :D

Anonymous said...

I thot the possihility of Jake doing the Lance biopic was nixed some time ago. I also wondered about the interview being padded - one piece that bothered me was Jake's commeht about Reese growing a beard, that seemed insensitive, nor funny. Lil suspicious of the entire piece.

chillinwitgyllen said...

Pia, I agree but I think it's his response to intrusive questions about his relationships. Silly answers to silly questions. You see the looks he gives the paps lately, I think he's disgusted by their behavior and so he responds in that way.

Farewell my friends, I'm off to new adventures, I'll have much to report when I get back, will miss you all.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone - hope you all are having a good Saturday :D

Hi Pia :) I tend to agree with CWG - 'silly answers to silly questions'.

Have a great time CWG! Looking forward to hearing all about it :D
