Jake makes memories in Cannes, Natalie gets ready and hopes for Heath

Great today to discover, thanks to Sass, another video from that most glamorous of festivals, the Cannes International Film Festival. Thursday 17 May was an incredible day, for those walking the red carpet and for those lucky enough to be next to it. Hot, sunny, wonderful company, lots of excitement and joy, and there was Jake Gyllenhaal walking (at one point dancing) the Palais red carpet, looking like he owned it and, no doubt, making memories for himself too. Of all this year's red carpet events, this was the one where Jake looked like he was having the most fun. Watching this video is the perfect antidote to winter, so enjoy some Jake therapy here.

Talking of Zodiac, I Heart Jake has kindly posted some more pictures from the documentary on the UK edition of the Zodiac DVD. In addition, there are also new pictures from the LA premiere of a different film, Rendition. Looking at these pictures, I can appreciate why Jake shaved, that looks itchy!

Brothers gets underway

Today is the day we all start looking towards New Mexico as Brothers begins work in earnest. The film has been attracting some media attention already, not least because of its leading lady, Natalie Portman, who has featured in several interviews over the last few days (including this very interesting and lengthy feature in the Guardian last weekend, in which we find that Natalie 'socially' knows her Brothers co-stars!). Natalie told MTV 'I did [see “Brodre”], but I’m not going to study it... I think it’s a very different movie.” I like the sound of that. She also describes the basic plot: 'I play Tobey Maguire's wife. Tobey plays a Marine who is sent off to war the same week that his brother, who Jake Gyllenhaal plays, gets out of jail. So when Jake gets out of jail, he's sort of taking care of his brother's wife and kids while he's away. Obviously when he comes back, there's a problem.'

The strike by America's TV and film writers continues and is now affecting filming schedules, although not Brothers. Natalie Portman's support for a whole range of courses is well known and, some days ago, she touched on what the strike means for Brothers: 'Next to start shooting for Portman, as studios try to get projects in before the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) contract expires next spring, is a Jim Sheridan film, "Brothers," with Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal. It's based on a Susanne Bier film with a screenplay adaptation by David Benioff ("The Kite Runner," "Wolverine")... "It's tricky because obviously we all support the writers and the strike," Portman said, "but Jim's style of directing is that we improvise a lot. We're doing that and hoping that's not infringing on anything. We're not allowed to have any rewrites. Jim's in the Writers Guild, so he's obviously not doing any rewrites."'

The Gotham Awards Gala

Tonight the independent Gotham Awards is held in Brooklyn and among the contenders for the top prize is Heath Ledger's I'm Not There. Among the expected attendees is Heath's co-star from The Dark Knight, Maggie Gyllenhaal. Here's hoping that we may have a photo of the two together tonight and also that I'm Not There gets its prize. Roger Ebert, winning his battle against cancer, will also be there to accept a special tribute award.

Includes pictures from IHJ.

Thanks for the updates! I wish Heath's new movie good luck at the Spirit Awards and hopefully we'll get a pic of him with Maggie!

Hi Anon - thanks! And good luck to Heath. I'd love a pic of Heath and Maggie together too :)

Oh, I love that Cannes video! Thank you WDW and Sass:) And yes, he definitely owned that red carpet! Was that you in the background, WDW, calling out to Jake?

I have to ask about the pics from the Zodiac documentary, is the first one from that as well? the one with the grey shirt, I mean. Cos I don't remember him wearing that shirt(or, more honestly,I don't remember seeing his chest hair) in the documentary that was on ITV and I thought it was the same one? Do I have to buy this copy as well after all?

Good luck to Heath from me too:) I would love to see a pic of Heath and Maggie! I'd love even more to see a new pic of Heath and Jake, but Heath and Maggie would be lovely:)

Hey TL - To be honest I was thinking of you (the Jake Chest Hair Expert) when I posted the pic ;) I've certainly seen that interview before but you reckon that wasn't on the ITV4 show? I'll have to check.

As for the video - I'm gonna own up - it sure sounds like me! And it was when Jake was climbing the steps - when he got to the top he turned round to point at us etc. So it could well be! Not many people were calling Jake's name and I have got a set of lungs on me. I reckoned Jake wanted to hear he had fans who'd made the trip to Cannes and I still believe that as he certainly seemed happy to see us there.

Wouldn't it be great to have a new pic of Heath and Jake! But yes, Maggie and Heath would be lovely too.

Hey WDW!I remember Jake was wearing the grey shirt in the Sky/Channel 5 interview (the one where he says he never split up with Kirsten!) but I don't think it was on the documentary cos I think that had the green Zodiac poster in the background. I can't remember what Jake was wearing but I'm sure I would rememeber if it was that shirt. I'll see if I can find the documentary and check. Unless of course you're going to take the pic down if it's not in there - if that's the case then it's definitely there, it's just me getting confused;)

I'm glad to hear that was you on the video, it brings it closer to those of us who weren't there when friends are there and we can live the experience vicariously:) Jake definitely appreciated your support, he looks so happy and thrilled:)

I am delighted to hear that the stars and director of Brothers are going to be working in support of the writer's strike! what an interesting discipline! I hear the improvised Saturday Night Live was great. sounds like this will be a first! I love a challenge like this, myself! Calls forth new material!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia! Interesting about SNL - that show needs a kick and a spot of improvisation may do the trick.

Right I've done some research TL! It's a hard job but someone's gotta do it... I've just had a look at the ITV4 special on my digital recorder and the British DVD 'This is Zodiac' special and both are identical and this pic is from both, as far as I can see. I have compared chest hair - I know, what an unpleasant job - and it looks like the same in both. I've been switching between the two.

twistedlogic said...

Oh WDw,I really appreciate the lengths you go to for me! I don't know how that passed me by! mind you, the sight of Jake's chest hair makes me forget my own name, never mind anything else! Right, where did I put that list to Santa?

Love to hear you give a shout out to Jake, WDW - oh yes it must be you also love to see Jake and Mark nuzzling. not to dismiss any other Jake experiences but sunny Cannes was something else! thanks Ssss and WDW Cannes memories.

DO NOT like Jake's beard, he looks like Fidel Castro.

Do like Natalie Portman. Gettin' to know her: good interview. She lives in East Village? Hmmmm!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Always good to spend time on Jake research TL :)

Hey Pia - I loved that bit too :) Every Jake experience is special and wonderful in the extreme but Cannes was something else - it was so glam and exotic! Jake looked so happy to be there. It didn't have the intimacy of Toronto - Cannes was so flamboyant and it was incredible being able to interact with a movie star on that stage. In Toronto you felt - and it did happen, frequently - that you could bump into a star on the street - not in Cannes. And that sun and all the white marquees, walls and banners - so Mediterranean. Fabulous :D

Ha! Very funny you two! Well, maybe I deserved it. I'll call Jake and maybe he'll join me on my swimming journey.

WDW you are so full of information I can't stand it.

Good luck to Heath as always!

I kid you not, on my way home right in front of me a license plate read JARHDMOM! I swear on my own grave this is true!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

That's hysterical CWG - A JARHDMOM licence plate! So which of you was it?!

chillinwitgyllen said...

WDW, I'm definitely the mom...

Hey, I'm actually surprised that Jake and Natalie didn't wind up together in the end, they make an unbelievable couple I think, chemistry's a funny thing isn't it.
There I go with the smut again, I just can't help it!

We haven't heard from Christie yet, wonder if she's still in NYC?

Evening WDW,
I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
Listen TL, I could hardly breathe at the beginning of Rendition; when Jake was waking up and holding his girlfriend, and that surprised the hell outa me:)

Cannes... what a wonderful time for Jake and all the Gyllenhaalic brokies who attended, and for those of us who experienced it vicariously through you.

Kate, I absolutely know that's you calling his gorgeousness's name. :):)
One day, maybe I'll journey to Toronto; I know he'll be there with another movie again. He and Heath are TIFF regulars now.

NO offense please, but Jake shave, please as soon as you can. Or better yet, let Natalie shave you. YOU look like the good Rabbi Jacob Benjamin, still hella smokin' hot but with itchy beard syndrome:)
*smooches to all*

Morning everyone :) I'm a sickie today unfortunately and have lost my voice so I hope you can hear me ;)

Hi CWG- I think Jake and Natalie have always looked good together as they seem to have a lot in common and I'm so glad Jake's making a film with such a good friend.

That's an incredible scene Sass! And one made for the DVD remote. I hope you can make it to TIFF, you can bet that Jake will go there again, just so long as it doesn't become too much of a circus. But I suppose that was inevitable this year because of having Jake, George, Brad, Angelina, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and many glamorous etcs all there at the same time instead of being spread out!

Good to see you Linda - thanks for commenting :) The pic on the street is fom when Jake and Natalie had a meal together in NYC last year, when Jake turned up with tulips. I can't remember which show the other picture is from, so I'll find out and let you know.

Morning Xenia! I know, this is great news. Feeling sick but waking up to an inbox full of good Jake news has got to make one feel better :D

Hope you feel better WDW!!!

The Wheel picture is from Kids4Kids, in 2002.

Your site is great, as always. ;*

Didn't realise Brothers screenwriter has also done The Kite Runner - the other film I'm desperate to see next year, The Kite Runner is about my favourite book of all time (even if the ending did reduce me to a blubbering mess on a central London bus during the rush hour)

Good luck Heath!

Thank you, as always, WDW

What a great array of Jake goodness again. I havent had chance to go through the other posts from the weekend, but plan to do that soon. I loved the vid from Cannes, Jake looked so beautiful and happy. I also loved the Natalie Portman interview - I have to say I know virtually nothing about her but this interview was so interesting and in depth and revealing, I feel like I know her a lot better now and she sounds such an interesting and intelligent person. I also love the sound of the short film she did, Hotel Chevalier and hope to see that. The song featured in it "Where do you go to my lovely" is probably one of my favourite songs of all time.

I'm excited at the thought of Brothers getting underway. It sounds a really interesting film, and I'm intrigued by the improvisational aspect of the film making. Imagine being a fly on the wall during the filming. That would be something.

It was great to discover that Natalie Portman lived in the East Village. I was there on Sunday and loved it, as much as I loved Greenwich Village. I could live there quite easily. I got to The Spotted Pig (as discussed in some previous posts) and spent a wonderful time there drinking pomegranate margharitas.

Also ventured in Washington Square Park hoping to see Heath playing chess but sadly he was nowhere to be seen. I was hoping to get to see "I'm not there" at the Lincoln Plaza but was in the Spotted Pig and lost track of time.

It would be great to see pics of Heath and Maggie together so hope Heath does turn up.

WDW, sorry to hear that you are not feeling well, and hope that you feel better soon. I feel lousy too...got a cold/cough the first night I arrived in NYC, but managed to survive!

The gaming wheel pic is from a set taken at a fair run by a charity called Kids 4 Kids. Natalie was active with it for several years. They were in their late teens
(17-ish?)when that picture was taken. Also pretty sure they actually dated for a while before Kirsten. Jake was about 19-20 and Natalie was a year younger. There's even a set of pap pictures "recording" some type of argument in NYC, between them where Jake seems to be hailing a cab.I wouldn't be surprised if it was during his time at Columbia, maybe just around the time he dropped out. Natalie was, of course at Harvard by then. They have remained really good friends. I've even seen pictures of Natalie with Maggie when Nat was about 12! So she is somewhat of a constant in their family's lives. The tulip pics were taken at the end of May or early June, around the time of her 25th B'day. She was leaving for Paris to shoot.(And still dating Gael Garcia Bernal on and off.) Natalie has been very politically active most of her life. Her activism centers around issues like the environment, and economic and social issues in developing nations especially for women and children. She has built an entire wing of a hospital in Jerusalem, where she was born, with the provision that everyone had to have access to the hospital...including Palestinians.
She speaks several languages fluently. As you can see, I'm very fond of Natalie. Jake and Natalie working together is something I have looked forward to for a while.

The Cannes video was fun!!! Seems that if the Golden Globes don't acknowledge Rendition or Zodiac, it won't get any notice, except on those annual critics' lists. And today there are rumblings about that Joe Namath biopic again. Last I looked, imdb didn't list Nailed....thank goddess!!!! I hope it just fades away...fades away.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes - I'm wrapping myself up in cotton wool and taking it very easy.

Thanks Gho and Bobbyanna for the info on the wheel pic of Jake and Natalie. I didn't realise they were so young then.

Hi Agent K - The Kite Runner sounds good if it did that. I must find out about that.

Thanks CWG - I took your advice :)

Hey, welcome back Christie! Sounds like you had a marvellous time (glad the cold and cough didn't get in the way). The Spotted Pig sounds great! Love the idea of pomegranate margaritas.

I feel like I know Natalie a bit more too and I like what I read.

Bobyanna - thanks for all that great info! I remember seeing more pics of Jake and Natalie, I'll have to see if I can find them. I also heard about her work in Jerusalem, a city that means something to me, but was unaware of all of the extra concerns she has. It seems like a lot of care for young shoulders to bear but she seems to have a real sense of fun too. No wonder Natalie and Jake stayed such friends - she must be fascinating to talk too. It bodes well for Brothers.

With the Namath film as good as confirmed (at least at the moment), I reckon we can say goodbye to Nailed. I don't know how Jake would fit it in, unless straight after the Moon Project, in the Spring. I won't be sorry despite the appeal of seeing Jake play a rogue ;)
