Jake set to play sporting legend Joe Namath after all

Jake Gyllenhaal is to play Joe Namath, aka Broadway Joe, after all. That's according to Variety, a source which doesn't often let us down and has been reliable with both Brothers and The Moon Project. Jake was first connected with the project back in July. As yet, there is no director.

Variety tells us: 'Universal Pictures will turn the life of Joe Namath into a feature film, with Jake Gyllenhaal playing the Hall of Fame quarterback. David Hollander will write the script once the writers strike is over. Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar will produce. Jimmy Walsh, who runs Namanco Prods., exec produces.'

'Walsh said he and Namath OK'd the movie after a long pursuit by Lazar, a strong take by Hollander and the belief that the athletic Gyllenhaal was the right actor to play him... Gyllenhaal, who is coming off "Rendition" and "Zodiac," is currently shooting the Jim Sheridan-directed "Brothers" with Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman and will follow that by teaming with Doug Liman on an untitled project at DreamWorks that revolves around a moon expedition.'

Speaking as someone who will undoubtedly see this film (think that's a cert) but who knows next to nothing about American football, I'm anxious to know that this as yet unnamed film will have appeal to audiences outside the US. I can definitely understand why sporty, athletic and fit Jake would want to portray a sporting legend, and the reasons why Joe Namath approved Jake to play him seem pretty obvious too, but European and international audiences don't routinely go and see films about American football or baseball. Although, to be fair, with the exception of Bend It Like Beckham, I don't think many of them would see a film about soccer either.

So the answer may lie in the character and personality of Joe Namath himself. Although he's largely unknown in this neck of the woods, reading about his life, excesses, adventures and moments of genius on and off the field, may indicate that there will be far more to this film than a serious of winning goals and kicks. As Variety says 'While other quarterbacks racked up bigger lifetime stats, Namath became the first football player to achieve rock-star status. The pic will tell the story of how the golden-armed kid from Beaver Falls, Pa., became Broadway Joe, the New York Jets quarterback who became a '60s cultural figure.' But if Joe has approved it, and this will be the 'authorised' version of his life, how sanitised will it be?

British site Filmstalker believes the film could work over here: 'Perhaps there have been loads of American Football films, it's just that they aren't big outside the U.S.? Well this one has the potential to be, as long as they think about that non-American Football audience when they're making it.'

Empire has this to say: 'OK, non-Yankee readers, we know you don't care about American 'football' but try to forget that for the length of this story. Got your shoulder pads ready? OK. Jake Gyllenhaal is lined up to play American football legend Joe Namath, the game's first modern superstar.'

'Namath was a '60s cultural icon who played for the New York Jets, where the owner paid him a record salary and turned him loose on New York to raise hell in the night clubs and spend his dough on fur coats and women. Namath became an advertising magnet, taking his league, the American Football League, from red-headed stepchild levels to NFL competitor status, leading to a merger between the two. He also helped turn 'football' into a major TV force, and made good on his personal guarantee to beat the Baltimore Colts (the favourites) in Super Bowl III - all on knees so bad that he was turned down for the Vietnam draft... But what do you think, readers? Will any film about American football ever make a dent in this country? Or are you, like us, far more intrigued by that moon project?' (Someone else keen to see The Moon Project!)

I rather liked this picture of what might be in store: 'Hopefully we can expect plenty of earned bragadacio, hairy chests, overcoming long odds, fur coats and bedfulls of quarter back on groupie sex sprinkled with liberal alcohol consumption...'

Of course, this project brings with it some risks (to counteract the distinct possibility of more scenes like That Rendition Scene), not least of which is that this:

may be replaced by this:

meaning we may want to see more of this:

The Gotham Awards

Unfortunately, I'm Not There didn't win any prizes at the independent Gotham Awards held last night in Brooklyn. Honours instead went to films by Sean Penn and Michael Moore. But good to see Maggie. Maggie's a busy lady at the moment, attending a succession of glamorous events in the city. There's another tonight according to the New York Post: 'November 28, 2007 -- CALVIN Klein is destroying his own ad in the name of art. To help promote the Dec. 1 opening of the New Museum on the Bowery, Klein allowed the institution's advertisers to drip oozing pink paint over his Houston Street billboard of Lara Stone and Jamie Burke wearing his jeans. The label, along with Julianne Moore and Maggie Gyllenhaal, will host an intimate soiree tonight at the museum, and the hot pink ooze will drip down the billboard until Monday.'

And finally...

Robert Graysmith and David Fincher are not the only people to have become obsessed with uncovering the identity of the Zodiac killer. It seems Britney Spears was gripped by the movie and has now set about solving the case herself. 'The recent film Zodiac about the case starring Jake Gyllenhaal, 26, captured Britney’s imagination. She has been spending hours on a website called zodiackiller.com and is convinced she can crack the case as many people believe the culprit is still alive.' Not sure I'm feeling too reassured by that.

Possible return on the porn 'tash and American football - oh god I may have to get drunk to watch this :o (apologies, not a fan of American football, understand the basic rules, but would rather watch Rugby or Football any day of the week - oh, Jake as George Best, now there's a thought ;-) )

Anyhoo, Jake's judgement of scripts seems pretty rock solid, and hopefully a bare butt shaving scene in Brothers will make up for any future porn 'tash trauma he may be putting us through.

Hey Agent K - I can see we're all going to have to brush up on American Football. Maybe have a trip next time it takes over Wembley Stadium!! I've seen baseball in the US but not football as I like soccer - I like cricket myself... not sure how that would translate to the big screen ;)

But yes, let's have faith although as the script's not yet written... But if Jake's on board this early (as part of the incentive for Namath to agree to the movie being made) then he may have influence over the script. They're going to want to keep Jake happy and on board.

I fear there will be porntache issues :( but, yes, this will be made up for by bare shaving scenes in Brothers and shower scenes (groupies being an optional extra) in the Namath film!

Jake should run away from this Namath biopic as fast as his strong legs can transport him. It will be an unmitigated disaster, and it is utterly beneath him. Matt McCon. should take it; he's used to playing empty-headed sports figures. Jake is a brilliant actor, not a walking advertisement for Irish Spring.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thns for the opinion Anon :) I have to admit I have my concerns too. This is the last type of film I would normally go and see and it's the first time I can say that if it weren't for Jake I wouldn't see it. But Jake is in it, so I will, and hopefully it will surprise me, but give me Brothers and The Moon Project any day of the week. Btw, what's Irish Spring?

Anonymous said...

I sure hope they have a really great script and a amazing director lined up to do the Namath biopic. On one hand, Namath's era and his celebrity signalled the turning point in the really crass commercialization of American sports.(And this was also the time of television's coming of age with televised sporting events.TV was still fairly young in the 60's.) Joe Namath took it to an entirely different level. And people loved him. Life was a party.
He was fodder for the burgeoning paparrazzi trade and his lifestyle was well documented. I think this has the potential to be a very 'existentialist' fable on celebrity, or a straight up jock movie, but it could also be a disaster in the wrnog hands. I don't think Jake would agree on doing it if it was simply, a guy playing football, having lots of girlfriends and then getting endorsement deals.

I am not an American football fan. I barely understand the basics. But I was fascinated when I watched Oliver Stone deliver Al Pacino, Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz in Any Given Sunday. I'm pretty confident this will be more then a football movie. I really hope so, anyway.

I'm with Bobbyanna here. Could be fun as well as sharp social commentary and I do want Jake in action. (could be a disaster: but Jake doesnt seem to do disaster)

Sounds like J's taking a turn towards playing bad boys. I like bad boys.

Anonymous said...

Irish Spring is a brand of soap marketed primarily to men.

I wouldn't place too more stock in the Variety report anyway.

Variety reported that Jake was going to be in Farragut North, and look at what happened? And how many times was his name bandied about for the Lance Armstrong movie. Maybe this is just an attempt to butch up Jake's image.

Someone is, once again, just floating this Namath/Jake bio-pic out there. Let's just hope that the rumor evaporates, just like the last time.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bobbyanna - I'm very keen to see who's picked to direct it. A film about the nature of celebrity and 60s' celebrity at that could be good in the right hands. I'd be very interested to discover what drew Jake to it, hoping that it's more than just a dream to play a sporting superstar. I can imagine the appeal of that but I hope there's more to it. I know next to nothing about Namath's life in the 60s beyond the obvious - the script could give an honest tale of living in the spotlight with all its pressures.

I'd never even heard of the Stone movie you mention - shows what an appeal such films, even directed by Stone and starring Pacino, have outside the US.

As is often the case, we need more information :)

Ok, am I dreaming this post or am I still feeling the effects of that herbal jazz cigarette I had last night? Britney Spears to solve the Zodiac mystery?!! I can hardly type for laughing!!! Has the world gone mad? What's next? Paris Hilton starts an investigation into the policy of extraordinary rendition? David Beckham develops plans for lunar colonisation? Jake Gyllenhaal ranks lower than Zac Efron in a Sexiest Men poll? Oh...

Anyway, the Broadway Joe thing, well like WDW and AK(I totally agree about George Best btw, I've said that many times before- so many spooky twins here!) I'm a proper football(aka soccer) fan and know nothing about American football and I'm very worried about the thought of the pornstache making a comeback - even the beard is better than that!!! But the chest hair and sex scenes might well make up for it, I suppose. I can't say this would have been my first choice for Jake to do but he hasn't let us down yet, so I'm hoping it will be ok. What's happened to Nailed then? That sounds more like my cup of tea. Still, a few weeks ago I was worried cos Jake didn't appear to have anything new lined up, so I guess I should just be grateful that he has, never mind what it is.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - thanks, never heard of Irish Spring. Variety is a relatively reliable source, although they can get it wrong, but we just have to see if this fades away again. I have a feeling that the Lance Armstrong movie rumours will persist throughout my entire lifetime ;)

Hey Positively Pia - let's hope you're right. I have a real hankering myself to see Jake play a 'bad boy'.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL! No it's real - Britney is on the trail of the Zodiac! Maybe David will have to do Zodiac II in which Jake and Britney join forces... We have been saying that we want Jake to work with David again!! ;)

Nailed seems to have vanished again, with only Jessica linked to it. But who knows, that could pop up again. At this rate, Jake may get a week off next July. Gonna have to pace myself for 2009's red carpets! But you're right, probably best not to complain about any of Jake's choices as he's done all right so far and we don't know enough about this as yet.

Anonymous said...

Hi. I hope Jake's not thinking of doing this without knowing exactly where the script's going with the story. We know he opts for an emotional journey in his films so I'll bet this will be the same. I bet there's much more depth to this one than we can imagine at the moment. I hope so anyway because I would hate him to take something superficial. I wonder if he feels he needs to do a project likely to have the backing of the American box office which hasn't taken well to uncomfortable themes like Rendition?
Has Nailed sunk without trace?
Janie

The Britney thing has all the markings for a really black comedy! Someone plz! Do the screenplay! Pop Princess tries to re-start her career by attempting to solve a murder mystery.
I'm just really grateful, if it had to happen, she's focussed on the killer instead of the actor who played Graysmith! LOLOL!

WDW, if you can rent it, you might enjoy Any Given Sunday. It was my first time seeing a young Jamie Foxx in a demanding, serious role and he was amazing. I knew he had potential as a serious actor after seeing that. He'd been know previously for his comedic skills.

Xenia said...

I'm with bobbyanna on this either...there are good chances this will be more than a biopic about a daredevil football player IMO, it could be an interesting apologue on celebrity, a portrait of an era as US 60's having football not as the movie core but as a background, a scenery.
But we have to wait until we'll know something more on the project. And yes knowing the director's name would help...:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Janie - Thanks for commenting :) I imagine that the script although not written would have been detailed quite precisely in order for the production to get this far. So one must hope that Jake saw enough in it for him to believe it had something to say. This would certainly be entirely different from Rendition, wouldn't it? Moving from playing a government official involved in such an ugly practice as rendition to playing an American sporting icon. I think Nailed has had it, but then I thought that before about this!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh Bobbyanna - that would be priceless! Maybe Kelley Sane should give it a go ;)

I probably won't get to see that movie because I have no interest in films about American sports (or sports from anywhere else to be honest), even though I love sport itself, so Jake please make this a goodie :D

Hi Xenia - A portrait of life in the fast lane during the 60s could be good (being a big Beatles fan etc). We do need to know who the director is, and more about the screenwriter would help. Hollander seems to write mostly for TV I believe.

chillinwitgyllen said...

Hi WDW, I guess you did and I can see you've been very busy :))

I don't think Jake would do a movie about 'an empty headed sports figure'. He has better taste than that, I trust his judgement. If he does the movie it's because there's depth to it. Actually, JN is not only an all-American sports hero, he's also a well rounded, worldly person who has been through triumphs as well as downfalls. People see these sports figures as airheads but most of their lives are so interesting.

I'm excited about all of his projects coming up, that means more Jake *happy dance*

Playing JN means more incredible work out Jake pics to come and lots of nudity and sex :)

I just got a hot flash!

Thanks for the great update WDW.

Christie, sounds like you had a fantastic time, I looked for Heath too but to no avail. I went down the street with all the chess stores I forgot what that was Houston maybe, but he wasn't there either.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi CWG - I'm fitting in bits of Jaking in between napping :) Let's hope we get all those things with this film! I think, in general, that there aren't many sports stars I'm interested in outside of when they're playing their sport, so hopefully JN will be different.

Anonymous said...

Thank you so much for letting us know Jake will play Joe Nameth. I remember (vaguely) about Joe Nameth and how he helped the Jets (in his own way) to be a better team. I remember him having a lot of problems with his knees.

But I can SO see Jake playing him (I can see him playing Joe Nameth more easily than I can see him playing Lance Armstrong, physically I think Jake does resemble Joe Nameth.

I am so excited!

Linda (trekfan)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Linda - Trekfan's a familiar name - good to see you :) It's amazing that JN could play like that with such dodgy knees. Reminds me of that story once that Naomi was overheard telling Jake how she worried about his knees! I definitely agree tat Jake looks more like JN than Lance, whom he looks nothing like at all.

took me a few years to see Field of Dreams because I didnt want to see a "sports film" - turned out I loved it.

Hi Positively Pia - I remember looking at that back in July and I wished then, as I do now, that there is a God and Jake will never reenact that! :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh meant to say Pia - I nearly saw Field of Dreams but it had Kevin Costner in it...

chillinwitgyllen said...

I guess I'm the off man out this time. Saw Any Given Sunday and Replacements to name a few sports movies and I loved them. There are a few that I could do without but I'm really looking forward to this JN one, sounds interesting and seeing Jake in action should be fun.

OK friends across the pond...American football junkie here...My beloved Dallas Cowboys are back...I just wish we could take the New England Patriots:)

Coming on late to this great Jake movie news, nearly makes my head explode. I absolutely positively loved this blue-eyed handsome devil of a man as did most of my friends.
Joe Namath is one of the greatest quarterbacks the football world has ever known. There is no one like him out there today, and I'm not sure the football higher-ups want another Joe Namath on the field.
I hope Jake will do this movie, and if they include the stocking commercial; well, I wouldn't mind looking at Jake's gorgeous legs on the big screen, as Joe Namath's legs of course.

Variety most times gets it right with movies...plays you have access sources like...

Theatermania New York or Backstage and many others.

TY for this good news everyone...as a proud and happy member of Jake-verse, I'm ecstatic.

Christie said...

Is Jake suffering from OMMS (obsessive making movies syndrome)? LOL He seems to have his name attached to so many projects lately, not that I'm complaining of course. Not having a clue about american football I can't really say one way or another if this one about Joe Namath will be good or not. I just try to trust and support Jake's choices and wish him well.

It's a shame IMT didn't win anything at the Gotham Awards. I'm still very excited about watching it. Who was the girl in the pic with the lovely Maggie?

CWG, I didn't see the chess stores in NYC, but I did see the chess tables all set up in Washington Square Park. I did have a fantastic time but there just wasn't enough hours in the day to do everything! I met up with some people from the BBM forum I'm a member of - we ate in the appropriately named "Cowgirl" in Greenwich Village, and had a drink or three in The Stonewall Inn pub.

Btw, I bought two copies of the Esquire mag, so if any of you UK Gyllenhaalics want a copy please let me know, I'd be happy to pass it on.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey CWG - I'll come round to the idea as I would with any Jake film I was initially not so keen on - he just has that effect on me :D Biased, moi?

Hey Sass - Well, I bow down to your and CWG's American football expertise *) I know one 'blue-eyed handsome devil of a man' that I can never get enough off :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Christie! We were posting at the same time... Ah yes Jake How Many Films Can I Fit Into One Year Gyllenhaal - and I woudn't have it any other way. Just wonderful. If I need someone to show me the excitement of American Football, then it might as well be Jake! I'm very happy about the number of films to be sure (especially the Moon Project).

The Stonewall Inn pub sounds great btw.

That's kind of you to have a spare Esquire and I hope someone will give it a happy home. I'm very lucky to have one on the way thanks to the Lovely Linda :D

NYC sounds wonderful...

This is a peach of a post, WDW. Britney nearly did me in as well. I want to adopt her and make her better :D

Don't know much about JN but since it's Jake I will defo make the pilgrimage (or buy the DVD if the film isn't released here).

Of all the upcoming projects I like the sound of the moon one best.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anouska - I know, poor Britney. At least she's got herself a hobby :D

Oh don't say the JN movie won't get a release here! That'll make it a VERY expensive cinema trip :\ Jake will just have to do a helluva lot of publicity over here for it - maybe do some coaching...

Moon project all the way for me too.

Christie - meant to say that I don't know who the girl is with Maggie, hopefully someone else does? Could it be Ellen Page?

twistedlogic said...

Phew!! I've just spent the best part of an hour trying to log on to the site but my computer kept saying no! It wouldn't let me on to any of my other BBM/Jake sites either - I thought I'd been banned from Jakedom forever!! Seems to be working ok now, touch wood:)

I'm still getting my head round the idea of this Joe Namath film, but I'll still go and see it regardless so I hope it will be released outside of the US! Although I have to admit I don't know how well it will do or what could possibly encourage non-US audiences to see it (apart from Jake obviously, but for some reason that doesn't work for everyone). I can't imagine that Jake would do a film that was only going to get such a limited audience though, so I'm sure they'll come up with some angle to sell it.Jake will need to do a hell of a lot of promotion though, and a proper premiere, not just a quick 24 hour visit like last time;)

sass said...

Hi again WDW:)
Yes, the actress with Maggie is Ellen Page.
I've expected more and more great things from her ever since I saw her in Hard Candy a year or so ago.
She is already showing what she will become, with all the rave reviews she's gotten from Juno.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL - That's terrible - to be banned from Jakedom! You must have been very bad ;D I agree that the only thing that would encourage people outside the US to see this film is for all Gyllenhaalics to drag people to see it and promote it where we can and Jake's going to have to do the works over here. Yes, a proper premiere over here! Not been one of those for a long time.

Starbursts and red wine is quite a good therapy for a fever by the way :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sass! That's amazing, I guessed right and I'm the person that gets 9 out of 10 actresses muddled up (not helped by so many of them being called Jessica). So I must know her from Juno then.

twistedlogic said...

WDW, I haven't done anything bad to get myself banned - honest!! I'm thinking maybe my computer just couldn't handle any more Jake-ness cos it was fine with everything else, it was just Jake-related sites I had a problem with. Weird! Anyway, it seems ok now:)
Glad you're feeling better, btw! Red wine and Starbursts- I'll have to remember that one;)

chillinwitgyllen said...

Christie, I would have liked to be a part of that BBM gang, sounds like fun, can never get enough of that movie. You are certainly right, not enough hours in the day for NYC, well said.

WDW, sometimes I can't log on either but if I wait long enough (and privileged enough) it let's me on? TL your not alone. It's horrid to be Jake banned because I get these comments in my head and they are so fleeting, they go in and out just like that. That's why I love this place, it's like my own little Jake journal.

Red stuff and Starbursts it is.

twistedlogic said...

Hey CWG! I'm glad it's not just me then! I never thought of waiting(patience not being one of my strong points) I just unplugged everything and then plugged it back in a few times and had a few choice words with the PC and it was ok;) we'd both better make sure we're extra good from now on, just in case;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

TL glad things are working now. That's very odd. Blogger can be bad but generally I'm OK. Yep red stuff and starbursts - fabulous!

Hey CWG - that is so lovely, that you see the place like that *)

We just have to be good and our PCs will oblige and not bar us from Jakeness ;)

twistedlogic said...

I'm thinking it might be the sheer hotness of all the Jake pics, videos, etc that I have stored on the PC, that caused it to over-heat and have a bit of an adverse reaction - we've all been there!;D Maybe I need to cut down on my Jaking... Nah! I couldn't if I tried;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Don't even think about it TL ! G'night *)

I like football. Really, I do. At least, that's what I tell myself, but for some reason my friend insists that I only watch it for the men in tight pants. Honestly, where did he get that idea from?! :)

Still, I wouldn't mind going to see a football flick if it's an opportunity to see Jake in action..."hairy chest" and all. Yes, I hope we can expect locker room scenes. Yum.

But what about the Untitled Moon Project movie? I have to say, that movie is the one I'm looking forward to the most of Jake's upcoming films.

Britney, Britney, Britney...
I don't really know what to say at this. I kinda pity her, but at the same time, I'm kinda freaked out at the fact that the media was able to dig up her frigging WEB HISTORY.
I find that kinda creepy.
But at least we know she has good taste in movies. I think. Maybe.

Argh. The pornstache.

Pornstache makes me go wah. :(

But then again, ANY Jake is better than NO Jake.

Christie said...

WDW and Sass, thanks for clearing up who was with Maggie. Ellen Page looks like a little girl stood next to her! Maybe because Maggie looks so tall?

CWG, the BBM meet in Greenwich Village was wonderful, it really was. Something quite special. While we were in The Stonewall Inn, we found some "what's on" mags and inside were not only pics of Heath in IMT (I drooled), but there were also pics of a certain Jack Twist (I drooled and screamed). Suffice to say those mags came home with me.

I hear the writers strike has now ended, which is good news.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone :) Beautiful sunny day out there. Wonder how it's doing in Santa Fe...

Hi Fourplay - yep, those football trousers have somethig going for them and I'd definitely watch any film in which Jake was wearing those! You've got to feel for Britney but she has to take responsibility. I'm not sure being obsessed with a serial killer is a good move (if she is of course) when there are so many more gorgeous beings out there to have a passion for ;)

Hi Christie - sorry the strike ended too late for you to see a show but it sounds like you had an incredible time :)

Christie said...

I love that pic of Jake watching a game (I assume its the Red Sox, but have no real clue) - doesn't he look so lovely and happy?

When I bought the Esquire mag, I think I stared at the gap t-shirt pic of Jake for about 15 minutes straight. Considering that I don't like the beard, plus how simple the picture is, it really did take my breath away.

Yeah, it is a shame we didn't get to see anything on Broadway, but I don't feel I missed out because I had such an amazing time anyway. We had quite an experience at the New York Public Library where a guy was trying to gain publicity to raise money to publish a novel he had written by running around NY with nothing on but some y-fronts, socks and trainers. He arrived at NY public library and kept warm by running up and down the steps. He had "nakedauthors.com" written on his torso. I got my friend to have a pic taken with him. He seemed a very nice guy, considering he was doing such a weird and wacky thing.

chillinwitgyllen said...

Morning everyone, WDW you sound more chipper this morning :)

Christie, I loved that NYC experience, one can only get that there. So glad you went to the Spotted Pig, it's a fun place.

Christie said...

The Spotted Pig is a very fun place, you are right CWG. Did I tell you that on the way there, on Bleecker Street I think it was, we came upon a little pug dog, being carried by its owner like a baby, and its name was Peggy Sue! We saw a few pugs actually, and I thought dreamily of Jake. I thought dreamily of Jake quite a lot in NY.

chillinwitgyllen said...

Christie, seems like everyone in NYC has a dog doesn't it?

People there are so kind and friendly. I think the nergy makes people that way. No time to get upset about anything. I couldn't find my way to the Walter Reade Theatre and this guy heard me asking a cop and he came over and said I could follow him there because he was on his way too. So we walked and talked about Zodiac on the way. He was very excited about it as well.

Christie said...

Oh I agree CWG, I was overwhelmed by how kind and helpful everyone was. We must have looked like complete tourists as the amount of people who came up to us and said "need any help?" or "are you lost?", and nine times out of ten, we were! But they couldn't do enough for us. We met a guy in Greenwich Village we almost got tempted to ask to come along with us, he was so nice!

What a nice stranger for you to meet, and excuse to talk about Zodiac and Jake too! I wonder if Jake ever stops and helps people who look lost?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Afternoon :) Tut, dark already...

I'm feeling much better today, thanks CWG - I'm doing a half day working at home.

I love listening in to your NYC conversation CWG and Christie - makes me want to go. I'm going to the US in February for a week and trying to decide which bit!

Christie, I love that Esquire pic. It's strange because I wasn't so keen on the beard when that full but there's something amazing about the expression on Jake's face.

Yes, that picture is of Jake watching the Red Sox. Thinking about your guy at the library, I saw a bloke cycling in London the other day - a very cold day, wearing nothing but very skimpy shorts and an extremely hairy back. Did a few double takes...

It's good to hear how friendly NYorkers can be to lost tourists. I've found that in LA as well (although so many people I've chatted to there turn out to be ex-pats!). London is just so rushed, people need to take more time to help people out.

That's a way to approach Jake... ask for directions! Great idea!

Anonymous said...

There's a certain kind of creative energy in NYC I find really attractive and exciting. I love it there. Totally. Of course I haven't ever been to London or Paris. And Cannes is definitely on my "list of things to do." But NYC is special. And the people are very unique, at least in my experience. I mean, you will usually find friendly, helpful people in almost any city, but there is a delightful eccentricity about New Yorkers. Lots of idiosyncracies. LOL! Didn't we make a list or something? A list of "Jakeplaces," restaurants to go to?

Hi Bobbyanna! I've done a couple of NYC Eating with the Gyllenhaals features. I'm waiting for Jake to be spotted in restaurants in Santa Fe so I can look at the food there as I reckon I'd love it. Especially the booze ;)

I hope you get to London some day - it's a fabulous city, so much life to it. I particularly love it by the river in the sumer when it's all lit up and people are outside having a drink, buying books at the stalls, going to the theatres, or just hanging out and soaking up the atmosphere and an amazing view.

Cannes is another kettle of fish and it certainly isn't the most accessible or welcoming place I've been to. Nothing like Toronto.

I have that list if anyone needs it again. I mistyped energy in my blog, but it seems you all undertood :)

WDW if your coming in Feb you need to go to LA and make a quick trip to Santa Fe if they're still filming. Remember if you see Jake look lost and ask for directions. That seems easy enough. Or, don't forget, "you smell nice". That's our signiture Gyllenhaalic line :)

WDW I hope you're feeling better! Csn you start working on personal Jake interview as part of yr USA visit? Any more news on that ACLU lunch and set visit with Jake?

Hectic week: time for some foolin' around. Im listening to Albuquerque/Santa Fe PBS, off and on, googling Vermont Bear Company for a Jake bear (Bear with Santa hat? "Hunk Bear" with shades, Iloveyou tattoo, black leather jacket?): these are outrageously priced cusstom bears, guess I'll just put a maroon scarf around the neck of one a my home bears and call him JB. (wonder how he'll get along with Bogart the Bunny).

Im so glad you guys enjoyed NYC - and Im glad Jake loves it, too. And would respond if asked for directions by any one of us.

"Excuse me, but can you tell me which way is the Battery?" (Pause, while Jake, unable to resist a call, does the "The Bronx is up the Battery's down" number from It's a Wonderful Town) To be followed by Pia channeling an inebriated Joe Namath: "I just wanna kiss you."

Hey all. Very interesting stuff about Broadway Joe. I don't know much about football but I do know some about JN.

I have been finding it hard to go around the internet. It has become a not to kind place to Jake. :( The gossip is so stupid but yet it goes around the blogs and the gossip rags won't seem to leave Jake alone. I would just laugh it off but the fact that people believe it and use it as a chance to make fun of Jake is getting really tiring. Now there is rumor that Jake and Tobey are fighting over makeup people so it is another chance to question Jake's sexuality. Even the JN news has got sites being snide about the Jake casting. Sigh. Sorry for the rant. I think I have to give up going to a lot of other sites. I have tried before but kept going back and usually end up frustranted and pissed off. Sorry for the rant. Again, thank you WDW for all the Jake news!

Christie, glad you had a great time in NYC! Sounds like you got a great sense of the city. I was traveling and away for the holiday but it would be fun to get together with WDWers in the futre. :) The Spotted Pig is a great place. Very tiny but very happening. You can feel the cool energy there in that little homey space. The food is very good!

hey, getreal! I share your frustration and have been off other sites for almost a week and cannot believe how much better I feel! it was making me truly ill.

however, if I can say, respectfully, that I would prefer not to hear even any secondhand reports from these sites - I dont want to know if J and T are arguing about whatevver!

its WDW's call, of course -

just sayin', from my neck of the woods.

Sorry, Pia, I totally understand and will not bring any details from other sites here. As it is I am thru with them. I can't stomach the cruelty. I just had to get that last bit out. Won't happen again. :)

thanks, get real! it's good to know Im not the only one sickened by the cruelty. I know what it's like to want to "cast it off", too -

Hi PIA, get real, everyone.

I am going to stay right here with you. It's a scary world out there! :)

*Checks watch* what time does WDW get here of an evening then?

Hey, you lot, where have you all come from? I was just putting the new post up and now you've probably all gone off :)

Hi CWG - Gotta say LA is top of my list. Gotta get me some Oscar fever (didn't Jake say he wore that as cologne!)

Hey Pia - I want a Jake Bear!! Let me know if you find one.

I wonder if jake will find it odd if a whole load of people keep asking him for directions. At least the Drunken London Woman asked him to make her a martini. Maybe I'll try that approach too.

Hi Get Real - I'm so sorry you're finding it hard out there. I'm laying low myself but there's none of that here. I have some great people on the door here keeping all of that out of the WDW pub.

Damn Pia - please don't read my new post then :O I found it funny and didn't believe a word of it.

Ruby I'm here - don't go anywhere!! *)

My computer is not playing fair tonight. It's so slow and keeps freezing on me. So frustrating.

I love hearing other people's views of cities I've visited, and WDW, if you need a push for where to go in Feb (other than Santa Fe of course), go for NYC. I could go back there in a second. It's such a wonderfully exciting and interesting city. Luckily, we explored beyond the tourist trail and found wonderful places and met amazing people.

get real, I agree about The Spotted Pig. It's extremely small - luckily we found a seat at the bar and didn't move until it was time to leave! - but full of life and the girl serving behind the bar was intriguing too...we were impressed with her serving skills, plus she had so many tattoos we wondered if she was in competition with Heath Ledger.

WDW, thanks for confirming the smiley pic of Jake was indeed him at a Red Sox game. I love it. Was he in "The Green Monster" that he talked about on the Conan show? He looks extremely happy, they must have been winning! And as for the Esquire pic, there is just something hypnotic about it...you look at it long enough and you could almost drown in those eyes of his.

Hi Christie - lots of computer problems around today. I hope yours feels better soon. I'll have trouble deciding between NYC and LA I can tell. I love the southwest but that would be later in the year - as I like it to be very hot there. I hear that Brothers will also be filming in Vegas. I used to go there each year with work in January, what a place.

The Spotted Pig sounds amazing.

I think that's Jake in the Green Monster. High up, isn't it!

I put that picture in the new post as we were thinking about it earlier.

CWG, we need your list :)

I just have only one last thing to say about the Joe Namath project. After looking at pictures and video of Joe from the 70's??? I HATE that hair cut. And the bell bottom trousers, and that whole "Saturday Night Fever/John Travolta" look guys were channeling to look "cool." Jake's hair is very important to me. (sniffs.)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bobbyanna I really, really hate that look to! And I'm worried. Jake's hair is very important to us all and, even though it's very important to him too, he doesn't seem to mind them wrecking it!
