Jake: 'The truth sucks most of the time but it's the only way to get anywhere good'

A bit of a treat this evening as I think we deserve it now that the nights are fair drawing in and there's a bit of a chill in the air - so get warm, put your feet up, maybe get a glass, and watch some Jake. Yesterday, we had a radio interview that Jake Gyllenhaal recorded when he was in the UK. Today we have a video recording, also from that British visit, of Jake being interviewed by the marvellous Grant Lauchlan for the Scots TV station STV.

As ever, when Jake has a good interviewer, he responds in kind and Grant's affection for Jake is contagious, concluding with Jake showing how to pronounce his surname for the office at STV. Jake also feels comfortable enough to swear in this one and I know some of us will enjoy that...

Grant asks Jake a very interesting question - whether Jake feels responsibility as an actor to get a message out there; whether celebrity brings with it responsibility? Jake's answer is fascinating. 'I don't feel a responsibility. I really don't. I feel like I'm moved by certain stories. I was moved by this story. I've said it before a couple of times, I feel like it's true. It's kind of a sad time when actors are politicians and politicians are actors. I think the reponsibility's on the politicians and it's the responsibility of artists and anyone to shed light on the world and what is honest and true. And call people out on - I'm gonna swear now - but on their bullshit. So it's hard when you're an actor and you're kind of full of shit too, so it's a hard thing. But I don't feel a responsibility, I feel, maybe I should say, it's a necessity.' To me, this reads as if Jake isn't aware of a conscious responsibility that he carries around with him on his shoulders - instead, it is innate in him and part of that social conscience which it is all our responsibility to bear.

And on the question of whether people prefer ignorance: 'I'll speak for myself and I'll say yeah. I would prefer not to know. I think the truth is hard. The truth sucks most of the time but it's the only way to get anywhere good.'

The music of Rendition

I know that many of us have been bewitched and calmed by the music that plays on the official Rendition website. I know that I have and I have it playing in the background now. Jake seems to have always been a part of movies with a soundtrack to match the quality of the writing and acting. The Rendition soundtrack is different entirely from that of Brokeback Mountain, Zodiac, Donnie Darko, Moonlight Mile and Jarhead (all of which had phenomenal scores and song soundtracks), but it is an integral part of the film and the story. The site SoundtrackNet this week featured an interview with the two composers of Rendition's sounds, the South African Paul Hepker and Mark Kilian, who previously worked on Gavin Hood's Tsotsi.

The composers discuss both the film and the long relationship they have enjoyed with fellow South African Gavin: '...there is a sense of things that Gavin can show us and talk to us about, and filter through us before he necessarily moves it to the wider sphere of people working together on the film. There's kind of a little bit of a trust, in a circle of trust, which is great. He really includes us in a lot of decisions, and makes space for stuff that we choose to do if we need more space in a scene, he was very open to working with us.' South American and Moroccan musicians were used as well as the South African band Just Jinjer who are now settled in LA and who are playing London this month.

As for the sound of Rendition: 'It's not a traditional single line melody with a certain phrasing going on over a bed of harmonic development. The theme could be the texture, the theme could be the rhythm, it's a lot more of the subtle approach. I think the film in every respect really called for a subtle approach in the cinematography, and every way really. I think that's where that came from for us.'

Video of Jake and Robert Downey Jr

Last week, we enjoyed the pictures of Jake with Robert Downey Jr and Trudie Styler leaving the Key Club on Sunset Boulevard where they had seen Robert's son and his band performing. Here is a video of Jake leaving and there are Gyllensmiles all over the place, as there usually are when Jake's with Robert. I was amused to see that, like many of us no doubt, as soon as Jake was in the car his attention seemed to go straight to its stereo. Click on the Watch Flash Preview link here.

Ooooh the Grant Laughlin interview was gorgeous. I just loved Jake's face when he said he was 'kind of full of shit too' ..although we know he is actually *not* full of shit! But he was sweet saying it.

I liked him pronouncing his name for Grant at the end too, I remember the first time I saw him do that when he was much younger. Because we all know how his name sounds so well, it always surprises me now when people DON'T! .....And I just love to hear him say his own name. ( I'm mad )

It was good to see Jake so relaxed and happy with RDJ and Trudie Styler too.

Thank you for these, and the links about the music. :)

Hi Rosie! IT's such a good interview isn't it - I love Jake's expressions and how self-deprecating. I found it very amusing too with the actors being full of shit comment. I love, love to hear Jake pronounce his surname to - the whole world should now it by now :D

Forgot to say that I saw Ryan Philippe again today - they were back filming but in the street this time.

Thank you WDW! The STV interview is brilliant. I love how Jake just tells it like it is! And add me to the "love to hear Jake say his own name" club! I love the sound of his name anyway cos it just sounds gorgeous, sort of musical, but when it's Jake himself saying it, well it just does something to me:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Twisted Logic! Jake's name sounds like a song, doesn't it, especially when it's Jake saying it. And it's good he still has humour for the people who don't yet know how to say his name but want to learn.

Christie said...

Jake saying his own name is something rather special, I totally agree, the name being as unique as the man. I remember watching him being interviewed on the red carpet for DD (I think) and he interrupted his own interview to tell the next interviewer in line how to pronounce his name!! lol So cute.

I too love the music of Rendition, WDW, I found it so hypnotic and mesmerising and completely perfect.

Hi Rosie - that's a great story, I'd not heard that before. It is sweet and I suppose part of what you have to deal with if you have a Swedish name in LA. I love the music so much...

Grant Lauchlan is a darling man! and Jake enjoys engaging with frisky, intelligent "real" people -
nice interview - !

Rosiet, my sense is that Jake saying he is "kind of full of shit, too," is similiar to his saying, on Ellen's show. regarding the Interview photos and Hottest Bachelor in America motif:
"this was not my idea, this is not me - I feel like a fraud. . ."

& yes I will never forget him as a lil boy flexing his arm muscles and pourdly pronouncing his name: "Gyllenhaal. Jake Gyllenhaal."

And speaking of the "whole world" -
hmmm! friends and acquaintances and even my "shrink" lately have something to say about "that guy you like. . ."

love the picture in the phone booth - he has the most gorgeous profile!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Positively Pia - that Grant is something else :P Frisky is right, Jake likes that. And I agree with your interpretation of that line. I'm very proud that as I go through work etc, I leave a trail of questions about Jake in my wake - they all know who he is now :D

Hi WDW! I really admire how patient Jake is with people not pronouncing his name right cos it drives ME up the wall!!! I always shout at the TV or the computer screen when people say it wrong! It's a bit weird really cos it doesn't bother me half as much when people get my name wrong, which happens sometimes though not as often as with Jake's.

Anonymous said...

that's a great interview. all you need is one good interviewer who actually ask right questions and pay attention to what you have to say (instead of half listening and crossing out asked quesitons in their mind)... you're right, i think Jake appreciated that as well.

i do wonder how many interviews he did in those 2 short days Jake stayed in London...

Great post WDW. You're one resouceful host. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'm exactly the same TL - my name's misspelt all the time but it doesn't bother me half as much as when people disrespect JG!

Thanks Winterbird - I think Jake liked this guy. Just think how many interviews we'd have if Jake stayed over here for a week or month. Two days just won't do it. But there are bits and pieces turning up all the time.

Hey WDW and everyone, my apologies if this was maybe already mentioned but, wanted to let you know that they will be re-airing Jake's appearance on Ellen Degeneres tomorrow (Wednesday). So, cooking with Jake on Ellen again tomorrow, woo hoo!

Just had an interesting thot (to me, not necessarily to anyone else) - Jake has always said he "needed attention". I know he loves to walk the red carpet, and he has a relationship with the camera, but maybe he's also saying he needs REAL presence, real engagement. it's so much fun to see him with Jon Stewart, Ellen - and I would love to be in on a family gathering.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Jantoinette - thanks for the info - unfortunately not on here - sigh. I suppose one side effect of the strike could be lots of repeats of Jake on chat shows...

Hey Pia - that's an interesting thought to me too. I sometimes think that the reason Jake loves attention so much - and has said so - is that he doesn't get it so much at home. Like many of us, it sounds like Jake had to compete for attention when he was a child and now he says that when he's at home he gets teased. Fortunately, there are so many people who are more than happy to give Jake all the attention he needs and deserves :)

I'm revisiting BBM tonight. I need an antidote to big cities and motorways this evening :\

Hi WDW!

Great post, as usual. Lovely, lovely interview with Grant Lachlan, Jake is very animated in his discussion of the subject, and I love when he is down-to-earth and speaks his mind!

Also enjoyed reading about the composing of the music for Rendition - it's very mournful and works with the film beautifully, especially at the end.

Love that the first thing Jake does upon getting into a car is to turn on music - not unlike the rest of us! A man after our own hearts, for sure. And yes, Gyllenhaal is a beautiful name, I love to hear him say it, and speak just about anything, Shakespear, or recite the phone book, probably. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Marina - I love the music at the end of Rendition, and during most of the scenes in Morocco. Very evocative. And I liked that with Jake and the car stereo too. I set my music going in the car before I even turn the engine on!

After exchanging my cable modem and then having to buy a new router(!), I was finally able to sit down and watch this interview. Fabulous! I too love Jake's honesty and willingness to give an answer opposite to what his interviewer probably expects or is looking for. You're so right: Jake's interviews are absolutely colored by the quality of the interviewer. He's professional, but he's human.

And is it just me, or is Grant Lauchlan a major cutie? Okay, I know, it's probably the accent... :)

Thanks again for another extremely delightful post, WDW! And best wishes to Sass and anyone else out there who still isn't feeling quite up to spec. I hope settling in with a Jake movie will help soothe you as it does me.

Grant's interview with Jake is one of the best I've seen connected to Rendition. Jake was wonderfully candid and clear. I think he really enjoys talking to foreign press. The discussions seem....smarter.LOL!!!Altho, I still hold that if he'd done the Charlie Rose show with Gavin, it would have been a great hour on Public Television in the states.
When Ang did Charlie Rose for BBM, Heath went with him, not Jake.

I like the Grant interview. It was more like talking to a friend about a movie, and having a good discussion. He was so cute at the end where he says "I was right!" about pronouncing Gyllenhaal. And Jake's smile at the end was another dazzler! :)

Bobbyanna, I watched the Youtube with Tomlin and Russell, and then checked some other sites for info. The guy is definitely bad news, since this behavior seems to be a pattern with him. The 2000 Playboy interview with George Clooney kept popping up, where George talked about working with David on "Three Kings". (I found it on imdb, among other places)

Thanks for another great post, WDW!

Morning everyone :D

Thanks CWG :)

Morning Cherita - No, it's not just you - that Grant is definitely a cutie and I don't think it's just the accent. Glad you liked the vid, it really is good to hear Jake, as you say, give the unexpected answer.

Hi Bobbyanna - I think Jake must have liked the accent too :D

Thanks Neely - this guy sounds terrifying - I hope Jake is prewarned...

Have a good day and I'll see you all later :D

HI WDW:)
Since I'm up, I decided to Google David O. Russell *grin *...It turns out, I have seen and enjoyed most of his movies. The youtube video of his fight with Lilly Tomlin is awful...but she's OK with him now and calls him real and raw.
His movies are original and worth the money: Three Kings, Spanking The Monkey, and one of my favorites, I heart huckabees are all fantastic. Jake could do worse. I hope he'll be able to tolerate a person who intentionally--and not gently like Ang Lee--molests actors to get the performance he's after:(
I thought I'd link a NY Times David Russell article for your reading horror, but I couldn't:(
If he were my director I'd run for the nearest exit.:)

Hey, Sass! I just really hope Jake doesn't have to work with Russell. To me, it's a step backward, that's all. His temper aside,he isn't in the same league as the other directors Jake's collaborated with. In some ways, Jake has already "out grown" that kind of stuff. I hadn't heard anything about Clooney and Russell, but if he "directs" through the coercive elements of humiliation and intimidation, and actual violence or the threat of violence, that isn't a technique. It's a psychosis. I'm sorry, I feel really strongly about this. The Lily Tomlin thing was not something I took lightly. It was personal, and it made me physically ill the first time I saw it. I have every confidence how ever things turn out, Jake will be fine, but why bother! Life is short. why put up with totally unnecessary crap. It's a movie. It's not worth that kind of pain.
I won't belabor it. No point. It's just my honest reaction.

paulh said...

If you really mispronounce "Gyllenhaal," you could sound like someone with s Long Island accent ("Long Island" sounds like "Lawn guylan'). Jake Guylanhall?

I think everyone who has worked with David Russell has survived the ordeal. It's just one movie. Jake has pretty good skills at reduci g tension.

Last night I dreamed that I was in a movie with Jake. A woman named Gretchen, whom I used to work with, was in it, too, and she had a grand romantic scene in a doorway, a scene that I ruined by coming through by mistake.

Well, I'll say this. If Jake signs onto Nailed, he knows what's up. He has to. The entire world, which now includes me;) has seen that nasty piece of Lilly Tomlin video, and the "I didn't leak it" Clooney denials. We'll see if he thinks it's worth it. The man is a brilliant and original film maker...perhaps not in the same category as some others...but I can't deny his talent.
Paul, I wish I had a recent dream to share...soon maybe?:)

I remember in one of the Zodiac interviews Jake was talking about Ramona and he said "I get her when she cries." :)

But Russell? I think if Jake could calm him down we'd have to start calling him the miracle worker.

Jake really responded to that rather fine interviewer Grant. He's always great if he's got someone really good to bounce off.

I don't know how many saw Jake's interview with Miqetta Oliver on T4 (I've not seen it mentioned anywhere), but it was a completely different kettle of fish to Jake's interview with Alison Hammond. Where as Alison came across as funny, bubbly etc, which Jake responded to and went with the flow (and who can forget his 'kiss' face), Miquetta (sorry, shocking spelling) came across as, well as only a T4 presenter can, sneery, attempting to be 'smart' funny and failing desperately etc, and the 2 minutes interview was about as 'cold' as I've ever seen Jake in an interview.

(Apologies to anyone outside the UK who've no idea what in the hell a T4 presenter is - sneery, unfunny and completely up themselves sums it up)

Anonymous said...

paulh, I really don't need any reassurance whatsoever about Jake's ability to handle adversity, especially on set.I think he is very skilled at reducing tensions and being a peacemaker. You're right. It is only a movie. But that is Jake's life work. And to say people have survived the David O. Russell experience misses the point entirely. At what cost have they survived. Did you actually see the Lily Tomlin video, Paul? Do you really feel it was not so very significant for him to scream that filth in her face on and on? To menace her and to get physical? How can anyone possibly know what it cost to experience that behavior up close and personal. My point is why should Jake even have to be in that situation when he can spend his time doing so many more rewarding projects. David O. Russell doesn't create a safe space for an artist to work in. Of course, Jake will do whatever he wants, and I will support him. But Russell makes me ill. And sass, I enjoyed Three Kings with Clooney, Wahlberg and Ice T. I just think, as I said, that Jake has already outgrown this sort of movie and this sort of director. IMO, it would be like asking him to do something similar to Bubbleboy. At least we agree that David O. Russell is no Ang Lee. It isn't something to argue about. You feel the way you do and I feel the way I do.

Hello anonymous, oh dear, I can only imagine what that interview must have been like. And you summed up T4 presenters perfectly. (T4 by the way is a teen-based schedule of programmes on a UK tv channel).

This put me in mind of an interview Jake gave on T4 just after he won the Bafta for BBM. It was one of those unexpected moments when I never in a million years expected Jake to be on that show, or me to be watching it. Anyhow, it was a beautiful surprise for me until the pesenter opened his mouth. He was full of himself and trying to be all "I'm not gay but I'm extremely cool" and asked some of the most inane questions ever. But Jake being Jake, he was able to laugh it off in his own special way.

Good evening to everyone by the way. I got waylaid with wanting to berate T4. I have to go as it's hubby's birthday and we are having chinese!

Christie, so good to know our UK friends eat Chinese. Enjoy.

Hi everyone - had a not good day so very glad to see you all :)

Hey Sass - thanks for the info on David Russell. That had quite an effect on you Bobbyanna - I just hope that he's not as bad as all that. I agree with Paul that if anyone can deflate a situation it's Jake but I hope he won't need to.

I love that quote about Jake, Neely!

Hi Anon - I'm not sorry I missed that T4 interview then if it was two minutes of Jake not enjoying himself - fortunately most of the UK interveiws were far better than that.

Christie - thanks for telling us about that interview :) Have a great evening! CWG - you can get any food under the sun in the UK :D

Hi, Bobbyanna

There's a Zen saying that Hell is not punishment, it's training. The marines are trained to cope with *any* kind of abuse. jake had marine training for "Jarhead."

No, I'm not condoning what was done to Lily Tomlin. However, I had a boss who regularly went berserk, usually to female employees, but ultimately with men as well. I sang in a chorus with a director who went berserk all to often (I didn't stick around very long). I don't need to see the video in question; I've lived through similar crap.

I would personally like to see people fight back against such tirades, but it usually doesn't happen. Still, I *know* there are people who can stand their ground with quiet determination. Again, this is training, not punishment. Jake is somehting of a Zen guy....

Anonymous said...

I'm sure Jake has a lot of resources to cope with whatever is thrown at him, Paul. Unfortunately, I have had some personal experience working with victims of abuse, for many years. I'm sure they might have found Zen training helpful. But when you are actually "in the moment" and you are ambushed by this sort of thing, your immediate concern is "Should I duck?" followed by,"Oh, he didn't mean it. He was just over tired." "Followed by, "Someone please. Get me out of here." The trauma from such experiences lingered for years. It was very costly to the vicitms.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul and Bobbyanna and good morning. Just wanted to say that I've been very interested by your discussion :D I wouldn't mind a spot of zen training myself.
