Dining with the Gyllenhaals - Axe Restaurant, Venice, LA, 20 January

New photos emerged today of Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon out in Venice, Los Angeles, on Sunday having had brunch at Axe on Abbot Kinney Boulevard by Brooks Avenue. You cannot believe how tempting it was to get out my holiday snaps because I had breakfast myself there last Spring - but (you'll be glad to know) I resisted the urge. A memorable day not least because I hired a white car and parked it off Main Street, Venice, in one of many identical parking lots amongst many identical white cars. I learned a lesson that day not easily forgotten.

At least these photos mean that something good can come out of that experience - a Dining with the Gyllenhaals post. For myself, as always for breakfast in the US, I went for the Axe plain oats - I may have had the poached eggs but I have no idea what 'stewed greens' are... Axe's own website is flashdriven and so may not work for all but here's the link.

Another thing to note about these photographs - thank heavens that the LA winter climate is so balmy. If it were not so, Jake would have had to have put on the brown grandpa cardigan that he is clutching so tightly. That would not have been good.

MTV UK Zodiac special

Big thanks are due to Twisted Logic who stayed up way too late last night to upload the MTV UK Zodiac interview and special (the subject of yesterday's post and a remarkable interview with Jake) onto YouTube for us all.

As a big thank you to TL, and because I'm weak, here is a picture I could bear looking at again.

Includes pictures from IHJ.

Hey WDW! I'm afraid I'm going to have to skip the food post cos we've been practicising for Pancake Day at TL Towers and I'm feeling so stuffed that just the thought of food is making me feel sick right now:(

No such problem with the Rendition pics though! I could never get sick of looking at them and I'm quite sure I'll never get sick of watching that scene either when we get the DVD. I'm counting the days until it drops through my letterbox ;D

Hey TL - Pancake Day is a month off, isn't it? Wow, that's what I call practising! I fancy pancakes now... Not long and we can look at that scene all day long and work etc will just stop!

Hey WDW I was going to complain about your posting onace again that nekid Jake picture that makes me crazy but maybe it will immuninize me against passing out when watching the DVD.

I better get that link-to-life thing you hang around your neck in case you go comotose and cant get to the phone.

Glad to see the video, thanks so much you guys for making this available to those of us who couldnt access. Jake said he'd talk more, sometimes, about the experience of DF wanting him for the film. Im curious.

Hi Pia! I'm definitey reposting that pic in your best interests so that you're ready when the DCD arrives just four weeks from now. It's kind of an aversion therapy in reverse!

Big thanks to TL for uploading the videos. I'm curious too about what Jake meant. I love this interview, one of the best I've seen and my heart melts watching it :D

ROFL! Pia, you crack me up!
And WDW, that's a brilliant idea about the reverse aversion therapy. I think you should post one of those pics every day until the DVD comes out;D And it's four weeks - I thought it was 3 :( Oh well, I was never any good at maths at the best of times, let alone when I'm trying to work out maths stuff in relation to Jake and that scene in particular;D

That is a great idea TL - I'm going to plan some reverse aversion therapy for you all :D

WOW wonderful stuff about Zodiac. I had no idea that Jennifer Aniston gave Jake such a glowing recommendation that David felt he could not do this movie without Jake.

I wish Jake and Jennifer would do another movie together.

I loved the vids. So much attention to detail. I wonder of Jake will work with David again (knowing what he knows now)

Hey Trekfan - I had no idea that Jen had played such an important part in getting Jake this role either. It makes me feel that she's been going around HW telling everyone how wonderful he is - I would love them to act together again :D

I think Jake would work with David again too.

Fincher mentions Donnie Darko and The Good Girl. Jake was getting his Oscar nomination while he was doing Zodiac.
Is Fincher coy not to mention seeing him in it or he hadn't seen Brokeback?
=:(

The line of actors that Jake *should* be in movies with seems to keep getting longer and longer-- Jennifer Aniston, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Reese Witherspoon, etc., etc.

Someone will need to approach someone rich like Bill Gates, and beg for the money to make a movie with a huge cast so everyone can be accommodated. :-)

Thank you, TL and WDW for those videos! OMG, great behind the scenes interviews with Jake, David and Mark! Jennifer Aniston is awesome. :) And those Rendition Naked!Jake are drool worthy. Mmm.... Nice pics of Jake and Reese and thanks for the menu WDW. So you went there huh. Guess you will have to go back and possibly have a Jake sighting. ;)

Don't know what Pancake Day is? We don't have that here.

Good morning WDW,hello all! Feeling bleary after a restless night I came here intent on watching the MTV Zodiac video from the previous post - but the opening spiel says it lasts half an hour and I can't spare that long before I have to get stuck into the mundane stuff! Curses!

Ah well,at least I know I've got 30 minutes of Jake/Zodiac to savour when I've done my duties for the day.

Jennifer Aniston,eh,what a girl??!! A very Good Girl!! I've always liked her a lot, I loved the chemistry she had with Jake in TGG,a sad little masterpiece of a black comedy, and they obviously enjoyed making that film together. To know that she really campaigned for Jake to get the role of "Graysmith" makes me love her even more.

Glad to see Jake shares your taste in restaurants,WDW, not least because "Axe" boasts fresh organic produce on its menu. A commendable choice by you and Jake on ethical and health grounds!

Anyway, gotta fly :-( Have a great day everyone! Nxxx

Morning everyone :) There is actually sun about today - can hardly believe it :D

Hey Anon - that's a very good point. I get the feeling there was a little bit of 'dissatisfaction' between Fincher and Jake with the publicity and award shows for BBM as it meant Jake wanted time off. Maybe it's a sore point? Interesting though.

Great idea Paul - but I think I'd settle for Jake taking a central role in something - I'm counting on the Moon project.

Hi Get Real - glad you liked the video and pics! Definitely drool worthy ;) It was very exciting to see pics of Jake somewhere I recognised.

We have Pancake Day on Shrove Tuesday in February. The pancakes are a vital element (plain with a bit of lemon and sugar). TL must be getting in some practice.

Morning Nadine! You'll really enjoy the video. LA is fantastic for good, wholesome food. The Urth cafe in BH does a sensational breakfast and I had the best cup of tea I've ever had there :D

Have a good day everyone :)

I didn't realize that the pancake day reference had to do with Shrove Tuesday. I know someone who claimed that he never made pancakes except for Shrove Tuesday.

I can make a lot of different kinds of food, but I never mastered pancake-making. :-(

G'morning lovelies. Brrrr in these parts, everybody slippin' on the ice.

This video was very intresting, I'll watch it again when I have the time. Sure enuff was a learning experience for Jake. Have a feeling he could say a lot more, as he implied in this interview.

I have always recalled Jake's first impression of Robert G., that there was something creepy about him. Jake shut up about this pretty fast, the boy is a good learner. I venture there's something slightly creepy about David, too - David fans forgive me! - he wouldnt do the film unless he got Jake? makes no sense to me. Jake did wonderful PR for this film. Of course this is to his advantage, as well. But Jake delivers, and David's early comments aboutJake's "earnestness" really annoyed me. Not, to turn around a comment of Rufus, that Im Jake's mother, or anything. But dont bleep with my boy, Fincher!

Pancake Day, I have never heard about that for "Shrove Tuesday". In Sweden we have a much more elaborate tradition on the day we call "fettisdag" littery "fat tuesday".

We eat "semlor" (singularis "semla") Here is a like to a picture, with this yummy and fattening pastry: http://www.recepten.se/recept/semlor.html.

Here is an English text by a Swedish woman with a link to a recipy:

Quote

The day before Lent is literary called fat Tuesday in Swedish. But don’t worry I have learnt that it is called Shrove Tuesday in English. In Britain this is Pancake Day, which to me seems a bit modest compared to the Swedish Semel-day. Semla is a bun made of white flour filled with almond paste and whipped cream. As in Britain, everyone has forgot about lent in Sweden, but everyone will still munch on these festive buns today.

I made a false start and baked them already two weeks ago. Here is the recipe I used, in English (but no silly avoirdupois) with dried yeast, since the normal yeast we have in Sweden cannot be found here.

Some twenty years ago you could not find it in the shops BEFORE Shrove Tuesday. It was only sold on that day, and strangely enough after that up until the Easter Holidays. Nowadays they start with it as early as in the beginning of the year, some even just on the Third Day of Christmas.

It is usually eaten as a desert, and wait for it, some hot milk in a deep bowl.

The first day, the REAL Shrove Thursday I use to eat two.

In the old days, when I didn't have a more sensitive tummy we used to have cooked brown beans with a thick sauce made with sugar and - vinegar. To this we had thick bacon, baked crisp.

After that meal you were really prepared to sustain the supposedly meat- and fat-free lent.

As stated above all what is left of lent is this eating of "semlor" and perhaps a little carnival the days before if you were influenced by southern catholic habits.

BTW is it not in a way interesting that this week is the beginning of the lent. A lot of people are forecasting a long period of meagre years :.(

But today let us eat and enjoy what is today!

Hm?

O Herman my mouth is watering!

& of course Fat Tuesday is Mardi Gras

Hi everyone :D Back home, phew and a half day tomorrow for Mr WDW's birthday. We're going to the Modern Tate art gallery in London but that should be OK if I have lots of cocktails first ;)

And everyone's talking about food! And pancakes (the UK way) are my favourites. TL, what have you started...

Hi Paul - I think UK pancakes are different to US ones, and a lot easier to make.

Hey Positively Pia - that is so interesting about the creepiness behind the Zodiac movie - or obsession, I suppose. I get the feeling the intensity of it rather scared Jake a little. And as an outright Fincher lover I forgive you :D The earnestness comments really annoyed me too. Jake just wanted to do a good job and it's going to take a while to learn a director's style. As Jake says, there wasn't the chance to get to know each other first.

Hi Herman! You have made me so hungry and yet my skills to not live up to my appetite. I have to think if I want to give anything up for Lent - not Jake that's for sure ;)
