Jake - 'Ang saw something in both of us that neither of us saw'

After focusing on Brokeback Mountain yesterday, I got the taste for it and so, with no apologies or preamble, here is another video interview with Jake Gyllenhaal, again from the Venice Film Festival (same day and place by the look of it) in 2005. This time, Australian journalist Margaret Pomeranz talks with Jake, Ang Lee and Heath Ledger about what drew them to the film and to each other.

Again, Jake stresses that it was having Ang on board as the director that drew him to want to do the role: 'I had read the script like probably three or four years before and was terrified of it. And as soon as he came on, I just thought, "Ang Lee, I mean, I would do anything that Ang Lee did." And at the same time I knew that the ideas behind it, there wouldn't be such a focus on, really, as much the sexuality of it as much as the love story, which I knew he would pursue and he would fight for. It's a scary topic for a lot of people. I totally understand that. I think that people will agree and disagree with it, like they do on the topic in general. But these aren't, in my belief, these aren't, like, two gay guys, these are two people who fall in love. And, you know, from the environment that they're in, which is incredibly lonely, and, you know, they find each other.'

Jake says of working with Heath: 'We took time where one of us didn't want to take the step and the other one would take the step first and the other one would follow.'

I think many of us are interested in how the film, and Ang's presentation of the love story, differed from, or complemented, Annie Proulx' original short story. In an interview with PlanetOut, Ang described how he altered the physical appearance of the characters, especially Jack Twist. Inevitably, this was influenced by the choice of actor: '...but I will say that these two were the best actors I could find. Others were more nervous. My first instinct was to cast as close to the short story as possible, but then I realized that I needed actors who could go for it and that they had to function well as a couple in a love story.'

Ang goes on to say 'Movies and books are different. You have to rely on the genre. The film is not a Western; it's a romantic love story, although I think Heath did carry somewhat of a Western mood. We had to provide that classic American romantic love story figure, and Jake fit along those lines, but with him we deviated from the short story, where Jack was bulkier and stockier and more manly. The film has to function as a love story, where, usually, a good couple is quite opposite from each other in disposition and appearance. I think Heath and Jake made a good couple -- plus they're good actors.'

The scenes in the movie could be different too, with others added, including one of the most beautiful scenes from the entire film: 'The next love scene I added because I wanted the characters to commit to each other. Ironically, they declare to each other that they're not queer so they can put [the label] aside, and then commit to each other and be tender, accepting, and sexy. The second scene was about commitment, although only while they're on the mountain.'

It's fascinating to consider whom Ang would have cast in a different age of cinema: 'Paul Newman and Montgomery Clift. They were both classic American romantic figures. Even back in the early '60s they weren't young enough to play these characters, but they still would have worked.'

Jake told The Cinema Source that he believed he would have been picked for the Ennis role: 'When I read the script for the first time, I thought Ang would want to cast me as Ennis and Heath would be cast as Jack just because you’re used to seeing Heath be so outgoing, being a kind of active presence... Somewhere in my mind, naively, I thought that. And when we were cast opposite of what I thought, I realized Ang saw something in both of us that neither of us saw.'

And for the love scenes: '"We knew it was part of servicing the story. Different times, people have said to me, ‘We hear you didn’t get naked for this or we hear you didn’t do this thing or the love scenes really aren’t that explicit’ and I think the film’s pretty much proved them wrong. I’m not afraid to do any of those things.” Preparation, as the actor thankfully notes, was short. "We didn’t really rehearse it at all. Ang did a really, really great thing: we had decided there would be no playback so we wouldn’t be able to see what we had done and no one was on-set with us. It was Ang and our cinematographer and Heath and I."'

For Jake, the film was all about showing people that love is different from the cliche - it's never easy to share that intimacy with another soul and sometimes it can't work out. 'I’ll be happy if people went into theaters thinking one thing and walking out thinking differently about it, that they go, ‘Oh, wow. Intimacy is a hard thing for all of us, no matter what the political things going on around it are.’ For everybody, loving and being with somebody is filled with just as much anger and resentment and jealousy as much as it is love and happiness and compassion, a sort of deeper understanding because Ang Lee has walked them through that.'

Finally, on February 13 2006, the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica hosted a Brokeback Mountain evening which finished with a Q&A with a number of people involved with the project (except Ang who was caught in a snow storm), including Jake and Heath. According to one report, Jake was the most high-sprited of those on the stage, even doing a Barry Gibb imprssion with the old fashioned microphone. The event was sold out - not surprisingly - and one person gave an account of parts of the Q&A to Defamer. This is what they said: 'Jake was a pleasant surprise with interesting, thoughtful comments and answers (“I prefer Revelation to Rationalization”) but let's be honest, his parents are well read (see past Defamer postings). It was a good Q & A. We all know that there is nothing worse than sitting through a bad Q & A in this town. Even more surprising was the interesting questions coming from the audience. Here's a sampling: Question: “Have you had any interviews where you WEREN'T asked what the love scenes were like to film?” Answer: “No”. “What is the subtext of the question people ask about the love scenes?” Jake's answer: “I want to ask people 'Why do you ask? What are you feeling?'” Q: What do you like to think happened to Ennis at the end of the movie? Jake's answer: “I like to think that Ennis meets Jack's son.”

That last one made me think. The picture below is for Ruby with love.

"ANG LEE: They're at the best moment in their lives. . When I see them, like a fly sees blood. (Laughs) They're innocent, they're in their pivotal point in their career.. . . And they're smart, talented, the look is just right. They still have that innocence and they listen, sometimes. It's like the best time in their lives. You just want to capture them."

Sounds like one of the best times in Ang's life, too. (and ours)

"Like a fly sees blood. . ." :) :)
Ang is so funny. "They still have that innocence, and the listen, sometimes." The innocence is rather like that which Annie P describes, in the story - up on Brokeback. And in the Venice video in former post, there it is.

Gosh we all struck gold, on this one.

I cant get a visual on the video, though. any suggestions?

I love it that Jake imagined Ennis meeting Jack's son at the end of "Brokeback Mountain."

Maybe it could have been good for the two to meet. Bobby seemed to be adrift as a person. Ennis had some really good parenting skills.

Hi Pia - If you click on the windows media player option on the righthand side it should work. I think the Real Player one is dysfunctional - should have said in the post.

Definitely a great time for Ang too - a fortuitous coming together of everything to make it right. 'Like a fly sees blood' is so funny and so Ang - I can see why Heath and Jake at the time found the whole experience quite dificult.

Hi Paulh - I loved that thought too. It's interesting that like the rest of us Jake may have needed to find a resolution for Ennis and this may have been his solution.

BBM will always have a piece of my heart. I just could not imagine anyone else but Jake and Heath as Jack and Ennis. Such wise words from Jake and Ang. I agree with you Paul, I like Jake's thoughts on Ennis meeting Jack's son to have some continued connection to Jack. He will always be heartbroken but maybe Jack's son could help Ennis deal with the grief and pain. They could help each other. Just some musing on the characters. :) And Ang really got it right. The whole film was just perfect. More fantastic videos! Thank you again, WDW!!

^^ Oops, the above was me!

Hi Get Real :D I totally agree - noone other than Heath and Jake and noone other than Ang. And it seems even more incredible when one considers how young Jake was and yet he seemed to know exactly how to breath life into Jack Twist.

Anonymous said...

Agreed, WDW. Also just adore that picture of Jake and Annie Proulx. He just seems to give everyone he talks to his full attention like they are the only people in the world. Such a special gift.

I love everything Ang says. His similes are always just perfect.
His intelligence shimmers. I would love to know him in real life - he was the reason I saw BBM. Seeing 'Lust, Caution' on Friday!

That said, I thought Bobby was terribly miscast. I wish they'd chosen one of Jake's 'Zodiac' boys :)

I love that picture Get Real - any opportunity and I'll post it :D

Hey Anouska - I find Ang completely intriguing and some of the things he says are just odd (and I mean that very affectionately). Although odd, what he says, when I think about it, has an incredible meaning and I can see/visualise what he's thinking. He expresses it in a unique way. I'm saying this badly (because I'm not an unbelievably talented director and he is) but for me Ang talks in pictures.

Let me know what you think of Lust, Caution...

Anonymous said...

Anouska, "Lust, Caution" is amazing! Saw it at TIFF and was mesmerized by it. Excellent performances and direction by Ang. Very erotic but that is truly necessary to the story.

WDW, I appreciate every opportunity to see that J/A pic! :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I hope I get to see it, none of these films show where I am... I saw all the advertisements for it in Toronto but I was there for only two days. You'll certainly be seeing that pic again here Get Real :D

One of my delights when trekking off to the multiplex to see BBMt a couple of times a week was discussing Ang with the Asian guy at the Chinese take-out counter. I think he thot I kept returning because I was a fan of Angs which, actually, I am. Lust, Caution is out on DVD in Feb, along with Rendition.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

That's good news Pia - not long to wait at all so I rckon I'll order the DVD and then just enjoy it at home with a good wine. I went to see Rendition so many times at my local multiplex I built up quite a friendship with the girl at the icecream counter :D There is no Chinese food near me... You can buy it at a cinema? You're lucky to get winegums at mine.

I bought a £50 bottle of whiskey from the Islands today for my birthday - I'm about to open it and delicately sip a small glass. I'm expecting a lot... OT but important

It wouldn't be so terrible to be a fan of Ang Lee. I've seen a few of his movies, and thought they were excellent.

Or, one could be a fan of Jake, or Heath, or Anne Hathaway, or Roberta Maxwell, or Randy Quaid, or Larry McMurtry, or Gus Santaollala, or...the list goes on. Such a stellar cast, even in the small parts.

Well happy days, WDW, single malt, I guess! Hey!(glad you're still celebrating: way to go!)

Yes, we've got a "Food Court" outside the cinema, I will forever associate chopsticks and a wee carton of sesame noodles with BBMt. Id polish it off during those everlasting previews.

Hi WDW:)
I'm making my way back to your former post. I opened up to this one, and it's simply marvelous.

BBM introduced me to grownup Jake and to the most important movie of my life.

That's a very interesting response by Jake about Ennis's meeting with Jack's son. I think his response highlights, Jake feelings about nurturing, fatherhood and children.

I read in one article, but I can't remember where, that Heath was asked what he thought Ennis would do now that Jack was gone... Heath said, "Not Much."

I'll be back to read all posts and watch videos later tonight:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paulh - Thanks for mentioning Anne Hathaway - I think she was truly marvellous and deserved a nomination every bit as much as Michelle, if not more so, for her incredible acting during the phone scene. I now want to see every film she's in. An amazing actress and also very young.

Huge treat was watching Sense and Sensibility directors cut with Ang and Jas Schamus commentaries. The Emma commentary was great also. Ang and his symbols, jeeze! Think I mentioned enjoying Riding With the Devil last week: again, Schamus and Ang - & Tobey, with whom Im becoming acquainted you know why.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh yes Pia a Single Malt - 17 year old Bowmore from Islay - nectar :D I'm tempted to put BB for the whiskey game but I'd have to delicately sip and do a commentary on each sip while they knock it back.

A foodhall at a cinema is a great idea. None of that here.

Coincidentally, Brokeback for me conjures up images, smells and tastes of whiskey, fire smoke and cool mountain air. (Zodiac by contrast always reminds me of the sights and sounds of LA as that's where I saw it first.)

Hi Sass - I'm glad you liked this post. It's a particularly personal one for me tonight. That's such a sad response by Heath but then that's how he would have had to act it - Jake as Jack and as Jake would have to find hope in Ennis' future.

After quite a few months, now that the second anniversary is here, I feel completely immersed in Brokeback again, which causes mixed feelings.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Pia - I absolutely loved Ang's Sense and Sensibility (one of my favourite novels). There's a reworking of the novel on British TV at the moment and it's as much a homage to Ang's film as to the book but I couldn't bring myself to watch it. It amazes me that Ang can have such insight into early 19th-century English manners.

Anonymous said...

I dont think its giving away anything, Sass, to mention that Jake's role in Brothers has alot to do with his caretaking his brothers children, as the basic story line to Brothers has been told.

BTW how much snow did you get in NYC?

Christie said...

Another great BBM post WDW. Jake's views on BBM are fascinating to me,as are Heath's. I'm still finding out new things about BBM - like the no playback deal that they made regarding the SNIT scene. I watched a Jake biography programme the other night and there were so many behind the scenes shots from BBM that I had never ever seen before, such as Jake playing with, what looked like, Atticus. It was adorable. I loved Heath's idea of what Ennis would be doing now..it seems completely spot on to me, but so incredibly sad.

I find Ang Lee an interesting person. I read a great article about him a couple of weeks ago in a Sunday paper, where he talked about his methods of direction and how he upset Emma Thompson during the filming of Sense & Sensiblity, due to his honest way of expressing himself. His admiration for Heath and Jake in their roles of Ennis and Jack is always wonderful to hear.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Christie - that's a fascinating comment. I've seen that documentary with jake playing with Atticus on set - that was very shortly after Jake got the young Atti and I think they really bonded in Canada for this film. Atticus must have been a good source of company for Jake during quite a lonely time.

Now and again, I hear how Ang has upset his actors during a film, like Emma as you mention here - and she's a strong and confident woman you would have thought hard to upset. I read an interview with Heath in which he said something about finding filming Brokeback an agonising experience. Both jake and Heath have talked about how lonely it was for them and that both were surprised to hear Ang talk so eloquently about BBM to 'outsiders' when he would hardly talk to them at all - all of the discussion was in the rehearsals and none during the filming itself. Te actors were left to find their own way, having been immersed in the world and feelings they had to uncover - but it worked - obviously! But it has to be hard to be put in that world where love ends that way. Fascinating.

Anonymous said...

That's why I love Ang, that's why I always defend Ennis :)

I'm amazed at Emma, maybe she was more invested than usual because she wrote the screenplay.

I'm boycotting the new S&S, they always chuck Andrew Davies at every period drama over here, and wait for something populist to emerge. Too lazy.

Oh wow,WDW,a Brokeback post, just what the Doctor ordered! Sadly he's also ordered a much earlier night for me tonight,so I'll come back and wallow in your wonderful work tomorrow!!
Sleep well,all,sweet dreams! xxxx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Anouska - that's interesting that it's not just me boycotting this S&S. I do like Andrew Davies some of the time but I feel no need for another version of this now that we have Ang's version. I didn't realise Emma wrote the screenplay. I do like her and she was a big influence on me when I was at university.

I love how you always defend Ennis *) And I always throw Jack at you!

Hey Drive By Nadine - we'll be here when you have the time :) See you tomorrow.

I had no choice - I'm watching BBM :D

Thanks for this post,WDW:)But what I said earlier about how I could cope with more BBM overload - I lied:( There's definitely something about this time of year that brings it all flooding back. At least I know from past experience, it'll pass:)
Love Ang's comments about SNIT(my favourite scene of any film ever) and Jake saying about Ennis meeting Bobby..can someone pass the tissues please...:(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

TL - you are just like me - I had no idea that I'd be hit by BBM again, two years on, but I have been. Zodiac is my film - I think as a work of art and composition and storytelling it's perfect - but as far as pulling at my heart it's BBM and it's got me again. Must be because it's January. It did a similar thing last year. As you say, it'll pass - the first time round, I wasn't so sure.

Ruby said...

I just saw Lust, Caution this evening. Excellent. I won't say any more for fear of spoilers.

I'd defend Ennis against all comers! He feels so much. :(
I like that Jack wants to see something positive for Ennis. Like Heath though I don't see much but loneliness for him without Jack. :(

Hmmm my Jake-in-Jack's-clothes pic. Two for the price of one. Thanks honey xxx

twistedlogic said...

Brokeback got us good, huh? Sorry, couldn't resist! It must be something about the cold winter nights that brings out the Brokie in us all. I had it last year too. And yeah, it'll pass but it's hard:( I'm torn between wanting to watch it and not daring to, so I'm watching the "making of" features. It's easier in a way, like showing kids see the monster in the film is just a bloke in a suit so they won't have nightmares. Sorry, that's a crap analogy, but I know what I mean. Excuse my ramblings:( Blame Jake;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Ruby! Glad you enjoyed it - I think it'll have to be the DVD for me. I like that Jake sees something positive for Ennis - I have to go with that or it coud hurt too much.

I'm glad you like your picture. I look at that picture and I see three things - Jack, Jake and Ruby.

TL I'm watching some of Brokeback tonight but I'm mellow as I have my hugely expensive 17-year-old single malt! That's not a crap analogy btw. I do that quite often with BBM. But I won't watch it all as I have a very early start to the day. Yep, Jake has a lot to answer for ;)

twistedlogic said...

I have to say, as much as I'm a Jack girl through and through, I won't have a bad word said against Ennis either. As much as he frustrates me sometimes, and however many times he hurt Jack(and Alma and Cassie), he hurt himself just as much, if not more, and he had to carry all that guilt with him his while life:( Oh dear, I better go! Have a good day tomorrow WDW, and everyone else:)

Oh yeah, and Jake has a lot to answer for - that topless/naked shaving scene better be good;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL * Ennis certainly paid for his choices and I wish it had been different.

The shaving scene will make up for a lot - Jim and Jake, are you listening!!

I love to see Heath's long legs fling about. Watched dozy embrace last night. Wondered what song his mama sung to him.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

G'night Pia and G'night all. Just watched that dozy embrace... sigh. Have a good night, wrap up. Gonna be a cold one here (well, I know it'll be a heatwave compared to what you're used to ...). See you all tomorrow :D

twistedlogic said...

Hey CWG! I was wondering where you'd got to lately, good to see you back:)

Pia, if you want to see Ennis flinging his legs about, I find the playfight after SNIT scene works a treat;D As much as I hate to dare criticise Ang Lee, would it really have hurt him to let that scene last just a few seconds longer? I wanna see where Jack's hand is going just as it cuts away to Aguirre! Not that there's any doubt in my mind where his hand's going, just would be nice to see it confirmed, that's all;)

I'm not brave enough to face Dozy Embrace (the second most beautiful scene ever imo) atm, just thinking about it makes me want to cry:(

I'm on the verge of tears again having just finished watching Brokeback once more.

Wasn't in the mood for posting today except to say that doesn't the guy in the second picture look like he's staring at Jake's crotch? Um...yeah.

I'm gonna get a tissue now.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning all! Back at work, darnnit :(

Hi TL and Haalin - sounds like I wasn't the only one to have an emotional BBM night last night. Tonight I'm going to try and be brighter :)

And yes, Ang should have let that scene last a LOT longer TL!

Anonymous said...

omgawd... this post brought tears in my eyes, and it's too early in the morning to get misty in the office!

i can never get enough of Ang talking about BBM... i just said "YAY" when i read that he would have cast Paul Newman and Monty Clift (Clift as Jack, I'd think)... Monty is one of my favourite actors, it's amazing that there's so much "Jake'sJack" in him. Sometimes i wonder if Jake had watched "Red River" before he played Jack Twist.

gnash from DC was at that Q&A screening as well (he was 6 feet away from Jake, the lucky devil...), he said Jake was very animated and enthusiastic. what a lovely guy.

oh... love your last post too. You know which film will be on my no. 1 spot for best film of 2007 :P "Zodiac" should be taught in film schools! it will go down as one of the most underappreciated classic.... "Lust, Caution" is my close second, seriously, it's another work of art from Ang.

Jake wanting Ennis to meet Jack's son... awww... just the thought of it makes my heart ache.

Thanks for the great posts again.
oh.. and good morning :)

Loved reading all the great BBM, Ang, Jake, Heath comments here. So that was Atticus Jake was playing with? That is so cute, I had no idea that Jake had Atticus with him. Did Atticus have a part in the film? ;)

Love hearing about Ang's direction of Jake and Heath. It does seem his deliberate way of directing worked perfectly for the film. I've got a great interview where Heath talks of Ang's direction, can't remember the exact quote but Heath says something on the lines of "Ang would say 'look at mountains. drag on cigarette. look at feet. look at mountains again.' I would be doing all that and trying to make it look natural."!! It obviously worked because that opening scene of Ennis stood outside the trailer, not saying a single word, is incredibly powerful. I remember watching that for the first time, and being blown away by the intense simplicity of it.

Rosiet, couldn't have said it better about BBM. These type of stories only come too infrequently. BBM is certainly one to add to the history books. My feelings about are hard to put into words exactly, it's more of a certain special feeling I get inside. I don't think it would have been as powerful if it wasn't for Jake and Heath.

And I never thought the occasion would become a benchmark in my life: the day Kennedy was shot, Our World Trade disaster, not that this film is as critical or as devastating as those events...but maybe it is... because it's remains to this day in my conscious and subconscious mind...unbelievable.

Hey Sass - I accept *) I'm glad you love the goodies - and the Fincher/Wells interview is a treasure without doubt.

For me, watching BBM had the biggest affect on my life than anything, truly. Never would I have thought I would know the date of seeing a movie two days on - a movie, for heaven's sake. I was knocked down by John Lennon's murder, but I was a child. That made it completely different. Brokeback made me actively change my life. No other event has made me want to do that. I don't think I'm the only one. It had a bit of an impact on Jake's life too ;)

sass said...

Hi once more,

Ty for accepting:)

yeah, that's what happened to me.
BBM pushed me towards a life change. Suddenly I wanted to do more than just teach my son what was absolutely wrong with gay discrimination. He is well versed on human rights and civil rights but I wanted to emphasize gay rights. I wanted to involve him as an activist, not just a sit and talk person. I think my enthusiasm took.

I did listen to JW--it was a fine interview--though I could tell he wanted DF to dis Jake. Thank goodness David avoided that trap.
There is still so much more to read and listen to and enjoy. :):)

I'm leaving the AICN interview on our desktop for my boy. He's one of their biggest fans--he loves Harry Knowles's reviews--but he may have missed this interview.

I can't wait to get my Zodiac DVD next Tuesday. Zodiac's Amazon top seller numbers aren't going great guns yet, but they may pick up next week.

Every time I've seen "Brokeback Mountain," I've felt goosebumps as the opening images were flashed on the screen, as if something magical were about to happen.

With any other movie, I'm calm, detached. This is no ordinary movie.

But "Zodiac" has that opening scene going for it, with the fireworks in the distance, and the two lovers in the car, off to enjoy themselves. You think you're going down memory lane, revisiting the late 1960s. Instead, the tryst is invaded by a homicidal maniac.

I don't know how I missed this but I love the insight. I didn't know there was a screening in Santa Monica and all the principals were there.

There is still so much we don't know about this movie, the background stuff. and so many discussions I have been part of going over both the OS and movie. So much we want to know what Annie was thinking.

So much I know I'd like to know happened during the making (like why Jake was not there for some parts of the filming, the cliff jumping part)

I wish they would have put the deleted scenes on the DVD but I know that Ang didn't want them there

Hey Paulh - the beginning of Zodiac gives me goose bumps like the start of no other film - I'm immediately right back there in the late 60s.

Hi Trekfan - there is a lot to know about the filming of BBM. There are bits and pieces that I've picked up and moods and feelings that you can sense, and I think it must have been an incredible process, and a very hard one indeed, for Jake and Heath. I wish, don't we all, there had been on that DVD - what a disappointment. Thanks for that great comment :)
