'It's never too early' to kiss Jake Gyllenhaal

This week, the UK's Independent newspaper did a fascinating feature on the most significant kisses of the movies. These screen kisses are significant for a whole range of reasons - because they show that first, much longed for kiss (The Empire Strikes Back); because of their location and setting (From Here to Eternity); because it is excruciating to watch (Entrapment); because it took place at the moment of death (Godfather 2); because it's aggressive (Gone With the Wind); because a character really needed it (In Search of a Midnight Kiss). Or because the kiss is forbidden - and this kiss is first on the list and it comes from Brokeback Mountain.

'The kiss that has been topping recent polls as the best screen smacker of all time is the second big encounter in the film, when Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal) arrives at the home of Ennis Del Mar (Ledger) some time after their first fumble in a tent on an isolated Wyoming mountain. Ennis thinks he's being clever by pushing Jack around so that they can end up in a spot that's out of sight of his wife Alma (Michelle Williams) and they lock tongues, arms and legs as if their lives depended on it. Unfortunately, Alma can still see them out of the window. This forbidden kiss has the extra spice of breaking two rules – it is both a gay kiss, and an extramarital one.'

Both Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger spent an inordinate amount of time during the promotion of Brokeback discussing what it was like to kiss one another. The Independent had earlier resisted the urge to ask itself, although clearly tempted: 'The kissing-Heath-Ledger question, then, feels a bit trite. (For posterity, it was "exfoliating" [Empire], it "hurt" (New York Times) and, says Ledger, was "just like kissing a person" [Entertainment Weekly].)'

Heath told the BBC: 'Well I don't have an image, and I didn't then. But it was a very difficult decision because it scared the hell out of me. And I didn't want to kiss Jake Gyllenhaal, you know? [Laughs].' Producer James Schamus said: 'Everybody says (Heath Ledger)'s so brave to take this role. To me, there are worse jobs than kissing Jake Gyllenhaal.' I do agree - in fact I think every job is a worse job - but James didn't actually have to do it himself. Heath also honestly admitted: '“I didn’t really want to kiss Jake [Gyllenhaal],” the “Brokeback Mountain” star told Hotdog mag. “Not only that, but it was hard looking him in the eyes and telling him I loved him. To show love in the eyes for another man is something I’ve never done. Everything was new about it — so quite obviously there was fear about it.”'

Heath joked to TotalFilm: 'It was definitely tough – it took a lot of courage and once I got home I felt slightly violated! I think going in to the film, Jake and I had a lot of respect for one another just for making this choice but we also understood that we had a responsibility to tell the story. To act out the scenes, I guess you have to suspend reality and harness the power of belief in the performance, you know? We’d convinced ourselves of the story and the love between these guys and between the words “action” and “cut” we didn’t think about the fact that it was Heath kissing Jake. If we had, we probably wouldn’t have been able to complete the scene. We really had to believe in our environment. It was tough subject matter for sure but just be conquering it and doing justice to the story. We all felt very proud.'

Jake was more taken aback by how rough it was: 'Heath almost broke my nose in (a kissing) scene. He grabs me and he slams me up against the wall and kisses me. And then I grab him and I slam him up against the wall and I kiss him. And we were doing take after take after take. I got the shit beat out of me. We had other scenes where we fought each other and I wasn't hurting as badly as I did after that one.'

Ang Lee seems not to have had too much sympathy form his stars' unease at smooching. He told the BBC: 'Yeah [laughs]. I encouraged them to do a passionate kiss and I encouraged them [saying that] you could never kiss a woman that hard so give me the most heroic western kiss and they went about it and almost broke each other's noses. At the time we were easy enough [together] to crack jokes. Usually I don't rehearse those scenes - technically I will rehearse it, but how they [the actors] go about it, I just expect them to deliver.' Jake said: 'We were talking about the kissing in the movie just recently. Clearly, it's pretty challenging material, but Ang said two men herding sheep was far more sexual than two men having sex on screen.'

The Brokeback kiss has become a landmark in cinema and, of course, in 2006, Jake collected the MTV award for Best Kiss from a very excitable Justin Timberlake. Jake said: 'This is a real honor, not just for me and Heath but for all of you, that you picked this movie and this kiss over all the other one. If we didn't win this award, it wasn't worth it. Now it was worth it.' And, in early 2007, the kiss was voted as the top movie kiss of all time by LOVEFiLM.

Although the Brokeback kiss is quite possibly the most famous kiss of Jake's career, there have been others. Jake once told W magazine that his best screen kiss came from Jennifer Aniston in The Good Girl and, having seen the obvious chemistry between Jake and Jen on more than one occasion, this comes as no surprise. When Jake presented Jen with her GLAAD Vanguard award, he said 'Everybody falls in love with Jennifer, and I have to say, it’s always her fault.' If you can watch the video below, you can relive that fabulous moment when Jake said 'smooooch'.

There's a funny account of how Jake and Jen approached the love scene of The Good Girl: Jennifer 'did find solace in Jake’s own approach to the moment, as she told the magazine that “Jake was as nervous as I was. Finally you just go for it. I couldn’t ask for a better, sweeter person to be devirginized on film with.” For his part, Jake discussed his experience working on the scene: “We had been making out for weeks in other scenes, and this was just some more hip grinding; some more kissing. Jennifer turned to me at one point and said, ‘That wasn’t so hard. I’ve faked it before.’” Throughout the production, he developed something of a protective stance toward his leading lady; he says that at one point, “I remember we were in bed one day, and Miguel Arteta screamed, ‘Stop joking around.’ And I thought, ‘This is Jennifer Aniston, motherf***er. You don’t yell at her.’”'

An earlier of Jake's leading ladies, Emmy Rossum, rather famously won her role in The Day After Tomorrow by going for a full-out snog with Jake during her audition - an approach that is praiseworthy and one that Jake seemed to have appreciated: As Emmy said, she had to kiss Jake so she might as well get on with it. 'It had to be. There was no choice for me. It was gonna be there. It also wasn't difficult. He's terribly attractive. So it wasn't like the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my whole life but, at the same time, I think the heat had to be there. Somebody had to melt the ice! (laughter).'

'I definitely auditioned. I went in and sat on the bench next to all the other girls that were auditioning. I wasn't given any kind of special treatment by any means. I got a meeting with Roland and Mark, went in and read for them, got a screen test with Jake, went in and I did that. I knew that that screen test was the moment when I had to prove myself. That's when you've gotta show it. You've gotta bring it. I think that anybody can run through water but not necessarily anybody can run through water while bringing the heart and emotion to the character.'

Another account of the lovely and demonstrative Emmy revealed: 'This 19-year-old is no wallflower. When she met hunky star Jake Gyllenhaal one morning a few years ago, Rossum pulled a move worthy of the Phantom. "I went over to him and said, 'Look, I know it's 9 a.m., but is it OK if I kiss you?' " Rossum recalls. When he consented ("He said, 'It's never too early!' "), she obliged. "I knew if I didn't do it, it would seem like I was scared. And I wanted to kiss him. He's very, very cute." Of course, that was right before her audition for the pair's 2004 action flick, "The Day After Tomorrow." And yes, she got the part. ("Because I kissed him!" she says.)'

I could go on and on, about these and more kisses, but I can't stop without mentioning the one leading lady who was reduced to tears by her Jake kisses. I think you know who I mean... For those who have never watched Proof, this video just features the Jake bits.

Some other Jake kisses:

WDW, what a cute post! I'm not surprised you enjoyed doing it. Much as I think I'm going to enjoy like my new job once I settle in properly, it is definitely worse than kissing Jake Gyllenhaal. :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Ruby :D Thanking you :) I've been thinking about snogging Jake all day (entirely for this post you understand) and I have come to the conclusion that my new job (and my last four or five jobs) are worse than kissing Jake Gyllenhaal.

Even if I had got my top job (astronaut and spacewalker) it would have been worse than kissing Jake Gyllenhaal.

Have you had a good day? How choppy was the Boat Race?

BirdGirl said...

What a great post WDW.

Ever since I saw BBM I have thought that the "Reunited and It Feels So Good" kiss was the best that I had ever seen. I instantly put it up with Scarlet and Rhett. That was the exact comparison I used. It was a kiss that you feel. How many times you say that. Cinematic perfection!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bird Girl! So glad you enjoyed the post - I had a lot of fun doing it - a great way to spend the day if not actually as good as spending the day kissing Jake.

I love Gone With the Wind - absolutely adore it - and I agree about comparing the two kisses. Love through the ages, that's what I think about these two films. I don't know why they get compared with other movie kisses such as that horrible upside down one in Spider-Man. These special screen kisses are rare events.

Ruby said...

That reunion kiss really was something special. Full of joy, passion and longing. And rough manliness, and heavy breathing and desire and, and....phew pass the wine, someone.

Since I watched the boat race with my feet up on the sofa, it didn't seem all that choppy to me!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh my word, Ruby, the temperature's gone up in here. I have my wine already, thank you :D Just take it easy! [The best ever episode of Top Gear is on tonight by the way.... that's On Topic because Jake would watch it if he could.]

twistedlogic said...

Gorgeous post, WDW! I haven't got time to read it all properly right now (I would if I hadn't spent ten minutes replaying the Reunion Kiss, but once is never enough!). I'll be back later to read it all in full, just wanted to pop in quickly and say thanks for brightening up such a dreary day :) Off to get the dinner on now, with Cher's Shoop Shoop Song stuck in my head :D

Ruby said...

What makes it the best episode WDW?

*waves to TL and Birdgirl*

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL - That's why the post took hours to put up - I had to watch and rewatch these videos and check and double check the pictures just to make sure there was kissing going on. Come back later :D

Hey Rubes - being On Topic as Jake is no doubt interested and planning his evening satellite viewing - it's the Top Gear North Pole race (the Hamster on a dog sledge against the others in a car - it's very touch and go and a bit chilly).

Jake is hot - phew, back on topic.

Where's my wave, eh? eh?

Ruby said...

I was talking to you, you want a wave as well?

*long-suffering sigh*

*waves to WDW*

Wet Dark and Wild said...

That's better :D

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

I'm not waving,I'm drowning!! Not in the choppy Thames but in wonderful WDW posts! Wait for me will ya,I've not been well!! (pause for violins - you were right about the Drama Queen, Pia!)

WDW,I'd just caught up on reading the last two posts and everyone's comments and was about to chip in myself when you go and put up this magnum opus about kissing Jake, for God's sake! What's a girl to do??!!
I'm just going to have to wade through this snog-fest(such hardship!) and it's sure to take me a long time - like TL ( hiya hon;-) ) I think I might have to hit the replay button more than once for the Reunion clip!

I'll try to drop back with a suitable comment when I come up for air :-) TTFN xxxx

All this talk of kissing Jake has got me antsy. I think that I am going to have to watch The Good Girl or BBM before Mr. BG gets home.

Great updates!

The love scenes between Heath and Jakein BBM were the hottest I've seen in a movie. Talk about chemistry, they had it in spades.

BirdGirl said...

The nose caress get's me every time. ;)

WDW, in another interview Heath admitted that Jake was a very good kisser. I think kissing one another wasn't so bad, like they wanted everyone to believe. ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Nadine - so sorry to hear you've been unwell - please look after yourself xx

Take your time with the posts, they're not going anywhere. I did enjoy spending some time on this one. Enjoy the videss in it - just keep on rewinding!

Hey Bird Girl :D Oh I love the nose nuzzling moment... :P This is my one evening to myself and so I need to plan it carefully - some BBM and some Zodiac may be in order. I've still not seen all the extras on Rendition.

Hi Anon :) Thanks for the comment. Heath and Jake were a perfect combination - we are so lucky to have that film.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Anon - we were posting at the same time :D I remember that quote! Oh there were so many wonderful quotes, there's room for at least one more post here. I like to think that the two of them had quite a laugh about all this over a drink :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

At the risk of talking to myself and sending everyone off to sleep, I did like how Jennifer said how pleased she was to be 'devirginised' on screen by Jake!

Ruby said...

WDW, you got changed when we weren't looking! :D

I just re-watched the GLAAD video. I do love hearing Jake say 'smooch'.

*waves to Nadine* although I doubt she'd complain if I didn't. ;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Yeay, you noticed, Ruby :D My TIFF Jake. He's been on my desktop for months - I thought he belonged here as well. Fits with my BAFTA LJ :D

Nadine's very polite unlike me :D I'm ready for another glass of wine now, please.I watched and re-watched that GLAAD video over and over!! I love it - it should be on degree syllabuses and debated in Parliaments.

I just watched a repeat of the
Boat race and it made me feel sick.

You know if you keep putting up these wonderful posts, how are you ever going to top this!! This post has made me feel so happy and so sad at the same time - a well of emotions right now.

I've just watched the reunion scene after resisting watching for so long - aaahhhhh it just kills me everytime.

Back later with more comments as I'm about to turn off all my lights for an hour x

I'm trying to remember something I read ages ago where Jake wasn't exactly flattering about Emmy's audition kiss :):)

*waves* all round and ((hugs)) to Nadine.

OT and PS, don't ever see Snakes on a Plane, possibly the worst film ever. Yes, even worse than the Avengers movie.

Mwwwwaaaahhh! There's a big smacker for you WDW! What a luscious post!

I am SO with Birdgirl on the nuzzle being tingle-tastic for the want of a much better word and that still, with their faces mashed together, filled with so much heated passion and pent-up emotion just knocks my socks off!

You're right,WDW,we are VERY lucky to have this film, more so than ever now since we lost our beautiful Ennis for real. Just to be serious for a moment, I should thank you for getting me over a hurdle. That's the first snippet of "Brokeback" - or indeed any Heath performance - I've been able to watch since January 22nd....and I'm relieved to say that it held all the power, passion and poignancy it always has for me. Heath's life was tragically short, but "Brokeback" alone is a timeless legacy for a beautiful, brilliant actor, quite apart from all his other great work, already released or yet to come....

Sorry, got a little wistful there, sure many of you still miss him like I do.

But you're so right,Anon,Jake and Heath had THE most magical chemistry - and no,I don't think they really found those love scenes anywhere near as hard as they made out ;-) ( Anyone for a SNIT?)

Don't you just have to feel sorry for poor Chris in the photo of Jake and Kiki in a clinch in that doorway? The look on his face! Talk about a spare p^"*& at a wedding! :-D Awwwwww!

Not THAT polite,WDW ;-)
Waves back to Ruby ;-)

And I think I might be in love with Jennifer Aniston.....

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Posting at the same time,Nouska! Hello!!! Hugs and kisses to you xx

What a great topic!! And a sweet post!! i mean... there's nothing better than thinking about/talking about/imagining kissing Jake Gyllenhaal, right?

I love love love love love the reunion kiss... i think one time I repeatedly watched that 20 times non-stop... all the while, thinking I wish they would move their hands away a bit, so I can see the lips and tongues! :P but I love seeing Jake's fingers... but does anyone else here also think Heath kind of "squeezed" Jake's face really tight in that scene? I think he's practically pulling Jake's skin! lol...

I also love the pre-oscar party pic with Ang Lee... I read that Jake was a bit tipsy in the event, that got me thinking that maybe Jake is a "kissing drunk"!!

I think he has great chemistry with Jen Aniston.... she's my pre-approved woman to go out with Jake. lol.

And Jake looked a bit shy when Rufus kissed his cheek... so cute.

I am torn... i can't decide if i wanna watch "Lions for Lambs" DVD or watch "Zodiac" again...

have a nice evening, eveyone...

Anonymous said...

oh... that was me :P

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh Sheba! That is such a fab comment, thanks so much. This post was designed with the sad and happy in mind at the same time - but it's also to make us celebrate Jake and Heath together. Watch the scene again and come back later after you've done your good thing xx

Hey Nouskie! let me know what that quote was :D I love that audition - I could do that audition - although I may need to repeat it a few times...

OT and PS Loved Snakes on a Plane!! There are some fab lines in that movie and I'm a big fan of Big Sam (as opposed to Wet Sam). A friend of mine has a book with quotes from that film, I can never remember any of them. I liked the bit when the python ate the baddie headfirst. I realise I am now embarrassed...

Yeay the dark blues!!

hey Nadine :D Oh blimey, more hotness and heat (just as well as I'm in the Arctic with Top Gear).

Oh Nadine - thanks for telling me that, about the snippet of film. I get huge comfort from watching parts of BBM. Huge. As you say so perfectly, BBM is timeless and a tribute to Heath and, if able, we should watch it and celebrate Heath. For me, it's all about the films.

That pic of Chris keeping lookout while Jake and Kirsten have a big smooch is one of my favourites of all pics! It's so funny and if I were Chris I'd be having some stern words with my friend!

I love Jen too - we're almost exactly the same age and that makes me feel good (although she looks good :D)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Winterbird :D we were posting at the same time too! I think that about the hands too - in the kiss both of them look very squished and I'd love to see a bit more kissing with lips and tongues, myself :D

Jake was definitely tipsy at that pre-Oscar event and I love he's a drunk kisser - in that we're compatible... And I love, love the Rufus peck. I think Jake liked that. He's generous with the cheek for pecking.

I've not seen Lions for the Lambs yet. Go with Zodiac :D

Well it's springtime, for sure, in this neck a the woods, quite a romp in the woods, WDW! ! !

OMY the nose nuzzle, and Jack's drugged stare at Ennis - no wonder Ang lov'd working with these guys - so young so pure so innocent o youth haha - beautiful work done by all including Shamus I guess chuckling in the background, who wouldnt want to (eff?) Jake Gyllenhaal? Right!

Thank you WDW for persuading me I am not amiss in refusing to see Proof.

Jason Timberlake overly excited, tee hee, recalling that night, Jake having to keep JT at bay, and doing it so - manfully? hehehe.

Life a Jake. cracks me up. He's sure had his challenges, and taken them on so - manfully?

Am I repeating myelf? I, too, am drowning (in love) not waving. (reading a very sexy book about the agony of young love Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman, while I should have been doing chores.)

Anonymous said...

I am glad you mentioned the kiss. I think it is one that will go down in history. I don't know how the guys felt about it, I know Heath had said that it's just as difficult to kiss and guy as it is to kiss a girl. You have to open yourself up and it's not always a pleasant thing to lower your guard and let your inner self go.

I don't believe what that hotdog mag said that Heath said he couldn't stand to look at Jake. I think they both looked at BBM as a job and acted as professionals.

I am just glad the industry recognized this momentous film moment.

thanks for posting

Sorry, got a little wistful there, sure many of you still miss him like I do

Sure do Nadine. I watched BBM about 3 weeks 'after' and I found it comforting somehow. Yet I watched Casanova about a week ago and I sobbed all through the credits. Go figure!

Snakes on a Plane is terrible but in a funny, eye-rolling kind of way. :D We are watching Willie Wonka at the moment!

I'm a little in love with Jen too, Mr R is a lot in love with her I think....

Right Anouska - Yay dark blues (and Emmy!)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia! Glad to hear you're reading a sexy loving book :D Talking of sexy - I love Justin Timberlake and had a good chuckle over their MTV exchange.

You're not missing anything with Proof - although I know many disagree with me :D - just see the best bits, well, bits with Jake anyway...

Hey Trekfan! I think it must be difficult whomever an actor has to kiss and show love for in a film, male or female - it's all part of the role and some actors do it better than others. Jake and Heath managed it perfectly and completely professionally. And here we are two years on and so many people know it. And it's such a way to think of Heath and Jake. Sentimental tonight, I think :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Ruby - you're watching Willy Wonka when Top Gear is on?! Shameful (what channel is that?...)

Like you I found BBM a comfor but I bawled like a baby through Knight's Tale. I have Casanova but not been up to seeing it yet. Strange how Ennis and Jack is a comfort.

Snakes on a Plane has stuff going for it - I love the bit where the snakes get the 'courting couple' in the loo :D I realise I have shallow elements ;)

BirdGirl said...

I was off doing chores, thinking about Jake and that BBM kiss the whole time. I hate mopping the kitchen floor so anything that keeps my mind off of it is fantastic.

I still haven't decided what movie I am going to watch. Probably BBM, even though I just watched it the other day. I can never get enough.

I just feel like I should mention the kiss in the second tent scene. It is completely different. It is soft and reluctant. Jacks hand on Ennis' face. That long deep stare, the little string of spit. Oh God...

That settles it I am going to watch it. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bird Girl - the SNIT scene is a different kind of kiss entirely and so beautiful. Jack's hand is so gentle. You're not going to be watching it alone tonight, that's for sure :D My DVD is ging on in a few minutes :)

I hope everyone is having such a lovely evening/night :D

Anonymous said...

while on the subject - for which I give thanks to you WDW - subject of kissin' - I lov'd Heath saying he was making love to a soul, not to the butt of a mule.

I think Heath and Jake might have worked together one day on a film, not necess as actors, but director, musician, etcetc - they both liked ONCE alot - for its "heart", I bet, as well as hand held camera filming, naturalism, attention to music and the life of musicians.

I do believe guys have to assert their manliness and profess that they find m/m love really difficult, but come on! the proof is in the pudding, fellas! Enjoy! We do.

Ruby said...

Willie Wonka was on ITV, WDW. We now have Master and Commander on Channel Four. Any other details you need? :D

Aww, the second tent scene. I love that. Enjoy the movie Birdgirl.

BirdGirl said...

I am off. Happing viewing Kate. Have a good one everybody.

*smooch*

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Exactly, Pia. I loved it when Heath said that. It would've been so good to have seen jake and Heath together a movie again, in whatever capacity. They seemed to see things in a way that complemented each other. And I also agree and think that, as men, they felt they had to do some protesting, but the proof is in the pudding and they put so much heart into those scenes.

Thanks for the details Ruby :D I have no TV guide so you're doing a good job :) Master and Commander is one of Mr WDW's favourite films. I like the scenery in it. I'm watching a bit of CSI NYC before settling down with BBM. Brokeback always gives me wonderful dreams.

Night Bird Girl and smooch back at you :D

Love the GLAD award video, thanks lots for that. WHAT does he do with his gum while he's talking? lots of swallowing and tongue action and I always think he must have swallowed it but then when he's done the gum's still there.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

He Pia - when I think of Jake chewing gum during an interview, it's often during this GLAAD intro. Jake has skills here - he can play with that gum and perfect his tongue action all at the same time :D Whata great reception Jake had!

Ruby said...

Ah, so we shouldn't really think of it as just gum-chewing, it's more about tongue exercise and agility. Now that sounds much more worthwhile. ;-)

Anonymous said...

Well one thing about the GLAD awards, Jake seems really turned on, and loving the attention (recalling his statement, it makes me hot to make people hot. . .) - and all that gum & tongue action is quite exciting. . . plus the incredible SMOOOOTCH action - and the lovely dance with Jen, perhaps grounding, for him - who knows. but it's a lovely thing to witness.

just sayin' :) :) :)

Anonymous said...

Ruby, i love your "excuse" for Jake's gum chewing habit... I also think most actors are very aware of bad breath, they want to sure they have fresh breath all the time, so chew gum all the time.

that brings back the "rumours" about Jake is mildly addicted to mentos... i love mentos too.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

ooh, back on the tongue action :P I suppose, Ruby, Jake does have a particularly agile tongue, so maybe it has to be exercised with the gum :)

Hey Pia - Jake had a fantastic reaction at GLAAD - sounds like it (and that for Jen) was louder and more enthusiastic than anyone's. The smooch and dance are classic moments - this is one of the clips I watch more than most - I love Jake's opening lines!

Hi there Winterbird :D Good poit about the breath although I'm sure Jake's smells as sexy as the rest of him (not biased at all...). Err I must own up to a bit of a mento problem myself, but ever since seeing a programme about what happens when you put mentos and coke in your mough at the same time I'm careful how I eat them!

Anonymous said...

I prefered the kisses in the tent, although the reunion kiss was great too. But the snit kiss was more intimate and i love the spit string. ;)

twistedlogic said...

Well I came back to read the post properly and try to make a sensible comment, but my brain has turned to mush (even more so than usual):) Thanks for all your comments tonight, really enjoyed reading them all. I've got to agree about the nose nuzzle after the reunion kiss, it makes me just as weak kneed as the kiss itself. And Birdgirl, yes, the SNIT kiss definitely deserves a mention. I think everyone here knows by now how much I love that scene everything about is just perfect. Those beautiful boys, bathed in the glow from the fire, commiting to each other as Ang Lee put it, is so tender and romantic, as well as erotic and sexy and...*melts into a puddle*

Oh, and going back to the Reunion Kiss, has anyone else noticed when you play it in slow motion (cos I'm not the only one who does that, right?) when Jack pushes Ennis back against the wall, he actually misses his mouth at first when he goes to kiss him? I don't know if it was deliberate or not, as Heath and Jake have said the whole scene was choreographed down to the last second but I think it adds to the raw passion of it, and makes it look even more realistic.

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hey (((TL))) just dropping in to say "sweet dreams" to everyone and find you here :-)

You know how you've said before that some of my posts have articulated your feelings/opinions and said just what you wanted to say? Well with your post tonight, word for word, you've returned the favour! :-) xxx

Sweet BBM dreams (((everybody)))

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - I think my favourite kiss, possibly my favourite moment is the kiss during SNIT when Jack holds Ennis' cheek. My second favourite moment is the nose nuzzle during the reunion.

Hey TL - I love that moment when Ennis is by the fire that warm evening, in a golden glow, and he makes a decision whether to go to Jack in the tent or not. And of course he does. The reunion kiss is just such a fire of passion, but it's rough, not everything meets as it should - so I love the nuzzle when Ennis whispers 'Later'. Sigh. Howeer choreographed, you wouldn't know it. Amazing - sigh.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Nadine - it's been such a wonderful evening chatting with everyone tonight :D

Speaking of sounds, I turned up the volume on that GLAAD video 'cos I love his voice and, you know what, I thought I heard him burp!! Did anyone else hear that? LMAO if he did.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh Sheba :DD You know as well as I do that Jake is like the Queen - he does not burp!!

Anonymous said...

Well, maybe it was a hickup. Go on, just watch it again with the sound up. Was I right or was it me that actually burped?!!

On a serious note, Heath revealed himself to us in BBM. He so thoroughly inhabited Ennis that brought him to life. So much so that both men and women would probably say I'm like the Ennis character. That's pretty powerful. BBM has become like a movement, a force all of its own.

Jake's right - that kiss really is a big deal. It represents so many things and in the space of.... how long was that scene?..maybe a minute, both of them showed us such a large range of emotions... and we got it, instantly.

I'm so lucky to have watched these beautiful men and a beautiful film with no prior knowledge or pre-conceived ideas about what I would see. I remember sitting in the cinema long after the credits just sobbing and .. forgive me, I digress.

I have to say one of my favourite scenes with a good kiss in TGG the second time they were in bed. His beauty spot was so prominent against his black hair and the shot was an extreme close up (or was that me putting it on x4 zoom - I can't remember). In any case those two.. oodles of charisma. Also when Holden kisses Justine in the car after she tells him he's depressed. What a sad and beautiful kiss and the shocking words he uses after - love that scene.

Sorry for the treble post :D

A hiccup I can deal with, Sheba!

That's the power of Brokeback, so many of us now are able to say that we're Ennises or Jacks and this helps us to relate to others. I'm a Jack myself, although many of those I love are Ennises - makes like interesting :D Yeah, we got it - totally unexpectedly. When I went to see this film - expecting beautiful scenery and that gorgeous guy out of TDAT and DDarko - I had no idea what I was getting. And I sobbed in my car for a long time. We share these feelings and experiences - amazing. And that's why I'm here. That was not a digression, Sheba :)

Post away Sheba :) My favourite scene in TGGirl is the on in the car when he kisses her. This film is still growing on me as, although I love Jake and Jen to bits, I find it very depressing and not giving.

Oh thank you WDW for this wonderful, wonderful post!!!Kissing Jake, Jake's tongue, all Jake's kisses:the movie ones and the real ones-this is the best topic ever! And of course I love BBM kisses, both of them, Heath and Jake had the most incredible chemistry. I never saw a movie which had moved me that much before BBM and I'm sure I'll never see anything like this again. Kissing Jake Gyllenhaal is defintely one of the best experiences you can have in life:)

Hi Zodiac! Good to see you and I'm so pleased you like this kissing post :D Sweet and sad and joyful all at the same time - I love the Emmy kisses, the Jen hugs and the Jack and Ennis moments of love. I definitely agree - there's not much better in life than kissing Jae Gyllenhaal and in my head and heart I do that an awful lot!!

It's funny what you both say, Sheba and WDW, about being so unexpectedly knocked sideways by BBM.By the time I got around to watching it on DVD,although I'd avoided any spoilers so I had no idea about the actual story, I was very much aware of all the critical acclaim, the Bafta wins, the Oscar travesty (and the two hot sexy boys kissing, which I admit was my main reason for wanting to watch itin the first place) so I had very high expectations, but not only did the film live up to them, it surpassed them in a way I could never have imagined. To think it was two years ago and the film still moves me so much...and there';s just no way I could have imagined that I would end up making so many new friends all across the world as a result.I owe so much to Jake and Heath and everyone involved in BBM.

Is Jae the other bother that Jake and Maggie's got hiding in the cupboard with his legs cut off. I'd kiss him too!! :DD

TL, I'm so sorry that you didn't get to experience this beauty on the big screen. The topography and geography was stunning and the sound of silence in moments was deafning.

I think also that we people all over the world that love this film so much it has become a part of our lives are unique people indeed. It has opened me up to many new experiences (eg. liking dogs, wanting to travel more etc). I haven't met a fellow Gyllenhaalic yet and at times it can be isolating but thank god for here. I will pluck up the courage to brave the weather and attend his next premier - that's a promise (health permitting).

Hey TL - that's amazing seeing BBM like that on DVD and yet managing to keep it all a mystery. It certainly does defy expectations - I had no idea when I saw it that it was even set in the 20th century or that it was about two guys. So ignorant - I went for scenery! Yes, we all owe the BBM crew so much.

Hi Sheba :D I wouldn't even have been able to imagine just over 2 years ago how it's changed my life! I've seen Jake at 4 events (talked to Maggie and chatted with Stephen), been all over the world (been to 3 premieres and been in the theatre for 2) and met some amazing people who are now my closest friends. To say it's amazing would be an understatement I can't express. I really, really hope that for the next premiere/event even more of us can meet up and enjoy it, Jake and each other. I hope so much you can make it :D

Hey Sheba! I was lucky enough to watch BBM on a big screen just over a year ago, with some fellow Brokies, and that was one of the most overwhelming experiences of my life. I've also been lucky enough to meet fellow Gyllenhaalic friends through this wonderful site, and trust me there's nothing like Jaking the time away with like minded people who "get it" :) Hopefully one day you'll be able to join us when we do it again:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

TL, we're posting at the same time again! Seeing BBM with other Brokies is an experience I've yet to enjoy, but not long now :D Jaking with you and the others has been the best thing about starting this site a year ago and I hope we can have many more meetings, with even more Jakers coming along :D

Ooh reached FNIT in BBM.... where's my whisky?

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! I hope we'll still be getting together for Jaking sessions when we're all in the old folks home;) I can't imagine my life without BBM, Jake and all of you here in it:)

FNIT, huh? I was so shocked when I saw that scene for the first time, not cos it was two men or anything like that, but just by how raw and intense it was. I was expecting the love/sex scenes to be really toned down so as not to scare off the prudes but neither Jake, Heath or Ang shied away from showing it like it is. I was also shocked cos the way they grow closer as their friendship deepens, I was expecting their first time to have more of a build up and to be more romantic, for want of a better word,so I was shocked at how suddenly it happened, almost out of the blue.I was ecpecting something along the lines of SNIT,but with hindsight what happened in FNIT just makes SNIT even more moving...*sigh*

WDW, Yeah, it creeps up on you doesn't it - like Woah!!

TL, so glad you got to see it in all it's glory. You have yearly BBM theatre nights? On a big screen? That's great, that I'd like to experience.

I would love to be at his next premier or play or anything like that where Jakeing is a requirement of meeting :DD Without even meeting me or knowing of my existance he's made me feel girly and connected to people again. It will be an honour x

After watching the first 2 minutes of Rendition I think I'll mosey on down to Brokeback Mountain. Thanks guys.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Too right, TL, they'll be wheeling us up to the bar to get the cosmos :D Too much has been enriched in my life to give all this up - much as I hate to say it, Jake is just one element although a pretty damn crucial one :D

You and me both with FNIT - I was totally shocked! It's funny now thinking back on it. I was 't expecting anything like that. Like you, if they were going to be together I was expecting more of a buildup :D As you say, though, it makes SNIT more poignant and just beautiful. FNIT was a shock to many of us, including, I suspect, Jack and Ennis but they were so ready for it and it had to happen like that - without words, just getting on with it. SNIT was all the more emotional because, after FNIT, Ennis had to make that decision to go into the tent, knowing full well what would happen.

Oh Sheba, Jake definitely makes me feel young (although of course I am a spring chicken ;D) and you can have so much fun when you meet up with others who feel the same. I'm so lucky to be able to get together with some people pretty often and it's such a laugh - although I don't know how good it is for my liver :D Enjoy the trip up the mountain :)

I love that on SNIT scene Ennis is the one that makes the first move. No words are necessary.

I know what you both mean, Sheba and WDW! I feel a bit ridiculous about the whole thing sometimes, as I'm way too old to have a silly crush on a movie star, but like the song says "If it makes you happy, it can't be that bad";) besides, I know I'm in very good company:)

Rendition and BBM - that's a very good suggestion, Sheba, I think I might try it myself;) Night all, thanks for such great chat tonight xx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I love that too about SNIT - Ennis needed to make a move :)

Just realised that the clocks go forward tonight in the UK - found out as I just lost an hour on my laptop and DVD player! Now we're on British Summer Time I'm hoping the sun may actually shine a bit.

This makes it pretty late so I suppose I'd better get off - thanls so much friends for such a wonderful chat. Carry on and I'll catch up with you tomorrow :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Night TL! I don't think it's a crush and you are in very good company ;D I'm watching a bit more of BBM and then off.

It's been such a good evening - thanks to everyone :D Catch up with y'all tomorrow.

Hey, morning everyone. The sun is shining at last.

You're rignt. This is much more than a crush. It's wishing Jake and everyone connected to him a good and fulfilling life.

BTW that picture of Jake mocking Alison Hammond (his kissy face) is hilarious. I love that interview especially when the music comes on "nobody does it better..." Damn, she even got a full on kiss - he doesn't normally do that in interviews does he? She's good - she just held out her arms wide and he went right into them. Maybe we should try that. :D

Kissing Heath Ledger is probably a pretty good job, too. ;-) His hair looks soft and silky, and he has a sensitive face

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone! Oh that hour really threw me, not good but hopefully we can have some spring now :D Thanks for such a fun evening!

Morning Sheba! That was such a great interview Alison did and her tactic was along the lines of Emmy's at her audition - and worked again! :D

Hi there Paul - I certainly agree with very word of that :)

Have a great day everyone :)
