Jake - 'I am writing music and playing'

A flyby post this evening because I have a nurse's cap and apron on - and I don't mean in a good way - so, in between looking after those who may not have been wise to eat that month-old pizza for lunch, here's a brief Jaking interlude.

I was very amused today by the Battle of the Bands between Maroon 5 - favourites of mine - and Radiohead - favourites of everybody in the world except me. So when I had the chance today I did some rummaging and discovered that Jake Gyllenhaal is - or was (probably far more accurate...) - a fan of Radiohead. Way back in 1999, the young Jake was asked what type of music he enjoyed and if he was still in a band: 'The band that I was in, "Holeshot," broke up. I am not currently in any band...but I am writing music and playing. I listen to all different kinds of music. I love The Pixies, Radiohead, Rufus Wainwright, Bob Dylan, The Toots and the Maytals, Beck, Belle and Sebastian, and Bruce Springsteen, to name a few.'

Do we have any Toots fans out there? Someone who likes the Maytals maybe? At least, I've heard of Beck and even own a few songs by The Pixies. I do own several Radiohead albums but I blame that on factors beyond my control. I would love to hear something of the music Jake says he is writing here - I wonder if that's still a hobby he finds time for.

While looking at this old interview, I'm delighted to see that Jake appreciates the poems of Dylan Thomas. Following on from yesterday's theme, Jake also mentions: 'I would consider Paul Newman my biggest inspiration. I believe that he has made wonderfully wise choices in both his career and his life that I respect and admire. He is the real thing. I love Sean Penn's work. I also love Cate Blanchett's work. (those are just two actors that come to mind on impulse).' I believe that Jake too is that rare 'real thing'.

However, Jake may have been a fan of Radiohead but he has not appeared in a video with all or any of the band. But Jake has appeared with schoolpal Maroon 5 Adam Levine in the SNL spoof 'I Ran', which made fun of Jake's very hairy status at that time. This video is all but gone from the net but you can read the lyrics and still see the video here.

Bits and bits

Jake is now no longer merely 'rumoured' by IMDb to be a star of Nailed. Also firmly attached is my favourite X-Man (Cyclops James Marsden), Catherine Keener and Tracy Morgan.

Peter Sarsgaard continues to film An Education in London and has been spotted! Last night an IMDb reader posted: 'Well, I live just down the street from St John's Church (now a concert hall) in Smith Square, Westminster (where they filmed the wedding in Atonement) and they were filming a departing-a-theatre-or-opera scene where Rosamund says something like 'I hope so'. Sarsgaard and Dominic Cooper were also there. They are still dismantling the set as I speak!' The 'dismantling' bit means that yet again the chase continues!

Oh, oh, oh, Toots and the Maytals - Could I fall in love with him anymore than I do "6446 was my number - right now, someone else has that number - I seh yeah!!"

Speaking of music, I've been trying to catch up on the posts I'd missed since my computer was down and read how Peter and Jake fell out whilst filming Jarhead. Peter said something like - 'Jake kept playing two rap songs everytime I was in the car with him - it made me want to put a bullet in Jake's head' LOL! I wonder what it was? My guess:

Golddigger and Jesus Walks - Kanye West. Or maybe it was Lose Yourself = Eminem?

I guess he plays his music with passion - just as he does his life xx

Wow! that's one hell of a "flyby" post. Once again I'm amazed at how you manage to keep coming up with such brilliant stuff every day, even when you've got your hands full in real life *does that bowing "we're not worthy" thing from Wayne's World*
But, I've gotta say, I'm shocked that you did a post about Jake's music, and even talk about him playing music, but you forgot to include that classic pic of him playing guitar;D

Am I imagining things, or did we have a lengthy discussion here about Holeshot and what the name meant? I'd love to hear Jake singing "seriously", maybe he could record an album for us quickly, while we wait for Brothers.

Hope Mr WDW gets better soon :)

Hey Sheba! You know the Toots and the Maytals! I am Impressed with a capital I :D Yes, that was a Kanye West song that drove Peter mad, although I can't remember which one. I loved the idea of Peter having to walk around with his headphones on for two weeks to avoid Jake - so funny. I think yes Jake does live his life with passion :D Thanks for that fab comment!

Hi TL! Mr WDW is a little feeble but I'm feeding him pineapple. That's kind of you to like the post - I didn't have the time that I wanted today :( I'll have to explore some of these things more fully when I get the chance as I get so interested in the silliest things!

May I put it on record - 'That Photo' of Jake playing the guitar is so yuck I'm determined never to post it (Uli likes to torment me with it now and again :D). I must do another Jake the musician post though.... Hmmm ideas!

Oh yes! I remember ages ago discusing Holeshot. I wonder what we thought it meant. I wonder what the other members are up to now.

Yep Jake should do an album for us - I think we should tell him what songs we want including - I would like a couple of Meatloaf covers :D

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! Meatloaf??!!! Er, ok...There's so many songs I would love to hear Jake sing, he'd have enough material for a 10 CD box set! One of my favourite Jake dreams I've had was one where he was singing Green Day's American Idiot (wearing a t shirt with TL on it, I might add :D)

As for Holeshot, I seem to recall we thought it sounded like a dodgy porn mag, then we found out it was something really boring to do with cars :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL! This is such a great idea - planning Jake's 10 CD Box set - Singin with Gyllen :D

Nothing wrong with a bit of Meatloaf by the way... ;D Jake could do a duet with Amy MacDonald! Ooh, I love Green Day :)

Holeshot is to do with cars?? Maybe Jake could do a Driving album... Or is this another way for us to get Jake onto Top Gear?

I would love to know what songs people think Jake should sing on our compilation :D

Anonymous said...

The song that drove Peter crazy was not from Kanye West, it was from 50 Cent, Candy Shop. I'm pretty sure, because I think I read every interview with Jake when Jarhead came out. LOL!

The band time certainly was fun for Jake, I read on IHJ FAQ how he "stole" the drummers girlfriend. LOL! Naughty boy! ;)

Thanks for the updates! :)

Anonymous said...

Ha, Candy Shop. I can just imagine Jake cranking up the base-line on that. Such a naughty song too - that bad ass!!

Don't get me started with Top Gear. They have them some boys toys fun don't they? LOL. I watched an episode today where they were driving around old cars filled with water!!! Hamster got lapped twice by the Jolly Green Giant. Jake would absolutely love going on Top Gear.

Singin with Gyllen - very inventive. Meat Loaf?! Which one? A Real Dead Ringer for Love. Yeah, American Idiot would go down a treat. Ok, songs for the compilation:

Lost without you - Robin Thicke (can just imagine him singing it)
So this is goodbye - Maroon 5(cos he started singing it to Ellen)
Run - Gnarls Barkley or
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley

just a few to consider so far. This is fun xxx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon! Yeah, that was it! 50 Cent and Candy Shop. I remember that now. Thanks! And yes, drummers beware... Thanks for the comment :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sheba - oh I like that episode of Top Gear - wouldn't mind seeing Jake in a wetsuit driving a flooded car either :D

My Meatloaf song would be What About Love :D I can just imagine Jake doing the Gnarls songs, love those. How about some U2 tunes?

twistedlogic said...

I remember that too now, about the drummer's girlfriend - cheers Anon (your folks just stop at anon?;))

WDW, anything and everything is an excuse for you to get Jake on Top Gear!:D As for my ideas for the box set..well, Jake could sing the song from the Chicken Tonight ad and I would still buy it, but I'd go for a classic love song like Here There and Everywhere by The Beatles or All I Want Is You by U2. Or I could picture him rocking out to something like Bon Jovi's You Give Love A Bad Name :D Or I can imagine him sexily swaying his hips to Light My Fire by The Doors *swoon*The possibilities are endless...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Grrr, blogger ate my comment!

I was just saying, TL, how much I'd love to hear Jake sing Yahweh by U2 - love that! And you can't go wrong with some Beatle tunes. It's Only Love on the Help album - yes please!

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW!Yeah, let's just start with the entire Beatles and U2 back catalogue and take it from there;)

BirdGirl said...

Ahh Jake sings...

what a thought. :)

I am glad to hear that he likes The Pixies. I loooooovvveee The Pixes. My fav song is "Where is My Mind". They play it at the end of Fight Club.

I am not sure what I would have him sing for me. Maybe some Coldplay. Yeah, he could sing "Green Eyes" to me.

*lost in thought*

BirdGirl said...

Just so you know I went over to i-tunes and searched for Toots and the Maytals so I could find out who you all where talking about. And I thought I knew a lot about music.

A really great post for a quicky, WDW. ;)

Btw, his co-star in Nailed is a crazy and hilarious comedian, Tracy Morgan, not Tracy Martin. I am glad Jake is finally linked officially to the movie! I do hope it goes well. It does have a good cast, just hope the director treats them right. *fingers crossed*

Sorry Mr. WDW is sick. :( Hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Add me to the liking Radiohead list. Sorry WDW. I don't know all the groups he was/is into but he does seem to have really good taste in music.

Hope some of you in the UK will have a Peter sighting.

xoxo all great WDW peeps.

Good idea, TL :D

Hi there, Bird Girl! I like the Pixies too - not heard their stuff in ages. Good for you for looking the other bands up. I'm gonna be doing that myself over the weekend. Time to search these bands out and get listening - I'm a huge fan of Arcade Fire because of Jake. I love Coldplay! How about The Killers' Bones?

Hi there, Anon! Do you have a name we can call you? Thanks for the correction - I'm hopeless sometimes. I've corrected the post. Jake does have a great taste in music (except for Radiohead - ooh, did I say that?). I'd love a Peter sighting :D Thanks for commenting!

Jake has a good musical tastes!

I would like to see him sing Your Song!
In tests of the Moulin Rouge he should have sung this music!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Monica! Jake would have been brilliant in Moulin Rouge - I'd love to hear/see him do the Elephant Song :D

Night all! Catch up with you all in the morning. I could chat about Jake and songs all night :D

Is that one day we will see the tests of Jake and Heath in Moulin Rouge?

wow!! James Marsden and Jake Gyllenhaal in the same movie filming here where i live..i must be dreaming!! lol im so excited!! I'm a huge maroon 5 fan too..i went to their concert in October..I was 2nd row dead center and before the show i went to the soundcheck and got to meet the guys! best concert i ever went to!!

Anonymous said...

Oops, sorry WDW, I was the anon at 22:49. I thought I had put my name but guess not, lol. I didn't even realize...oy!

Anonymous said...

I am so late.... thanks for Jake and his music post!

I am a Bell & Sebastian fan, so it's pretty exciting to hear that Jake likes them. I wonder if Jake has Isobel Campbell (from S&B) and Mark Lanegan's collaboraton "Ballads of Broken Sea", that was my album of the year in 2006. If he doesn't... i can send him a copy! :P

I think I also heard that Jake once said he was listening to "Arcade Fire", but I cannot be sure, I think it was asked when he was about to go on that young show in US (when he was promotion Zodiac)... I think maybe he's referring to the band's "Neon Bible" album which I think is brilliant too :)

Haha... but I've also heard another version that Peter was driven mad by Jake when he played a certain song from a musical repeatedly for 20 times... could be that Peter is easily annoyed? lol... i mean, come on... Jake can play even play Maroon 5, if he's sitting next to me :P

*ok... i will still slip in a few songs by Suede into his iPod*

good night all...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone :D Good to see you all and I can see I have to get some whole new music in... :)

Hi Get Real!

Hey Nicole - you are in for a treat. I hope you can pop down to the castings. That's so cool about seeing Maroon 5 - I was going to go last December but I couldn't due to job troubles :( I will go next time.

Morning Winterbird! I'd not heard of Bell & Sebastian. What sort of music is that? Jake is supposed to have gone to an Arcade Fire gig last Autumn and he's mentioned having them on his iPod before. I love Neon Bible. And yes, me too - Jake can play as many songs as he likes near me and he can sing along too :D

See you all later - have a great day - Friday thank heavens...

*good girl* said...

Good morning everyone :)

Thank you WDW for this new great post, I always love to know more about Jake's tastes, whatever they're about ;) definitely music-movie-food are among my fav :D

And maybe you'll be glad to know you can add me to the list of those who don't like Radiohead [at all] :P And more or less all the other groups Jake mentioned are unknown to me :-/ Fact is I'm a R&B and Hip Hop lover, I may like some rock songs, but not a rock group in general :P
So Jake's Kanye West and/or 50 Cent period would have fit perfectly with my music tastes :P too bad I was busy doing who knows what instead of knowing Jake and being with him during Jarhead filming ...

I agree with Sheba, Jake singing Crazy by Gnarls Barkley would be awsome! ;D ...and since these days I'm obsessed with an old Italian song titled "Vacanze Romane" (="Roman Holiday", which has nothing to do with the movie, but I've watched it some days ago for the first time - I know shame on me - and now I'm listening to this song too over and over again...I tend to get easily obsessed with things :-/) which has really high tonality, and considering his Dream Girls and Fever Night performances I guess it would fit him perfectly :P ...and how sexy Jake speaking Italian would be :D

Anonymous said...

I know Good Girl, The little piece I heard of him speaking Fench when that reporter greeted him is quite sexy. Even if he didn't understand the words, he's a good enough actor to pull it off :o)Jake's singing can handle a higher octave range so those romantic, beautiful songs that Robin Thicke sings or someone like him would suit Jake so much. I think definately there is a musical in Jake and he'll find the right one - hopefully soon.

Love r'n'b too but not so fond of hip-hop although I adore Kanye West who I saw in concert, which made me tolerate Maroon 5 (sorry WDW.)

I can't wait to see nailed and if Tracey Morgan is in it he'll be riffing on Jake big time. He should have so much fun on that set. I'm just worred about that director going off on one again on our boy - but Jake's beautifully charming so I guess he can hold his own (as long as you don't give him a rifle!!).

Morning everyone!

WDW, Belle & Sebastian is from Glasgow... their music, erm, it's kind of "The Smiths" and "Nick Drake" (Heath loved Nick Drake..), i love their early stuff, not really following them anymore after Isobel Campbell left.

I've also heard of Jake going to a "Gomez" gig... if it's true, then Jake is listening to many cool british bands too. And he definitely has gone to a U2 gig.

i am not into R'n'B or hiphop at all, but like we said, Jake can blast them away all he wants :)

Xenia said...

See? Even Jake likes (ar at least used to like) Radiohead! ;)
Never heard about Toots and Maytals...

If I can remember well Jake was a huge U2 fan too, it would be nice hearing Jake singing some U2 song, such as 'One' or 'The unforgettable fire' which are two of my favourites of the band...

Even if the idea of Jake as Jim Morrison singing Light My Fire isn't bad either...:)

Anonymous said...

Light my fire is amazing... (there's that word again!) Will Young sang a version of that and his is just as good. Definately Light My Fire... I think quite a few of us here will spontaneously combust if he does.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone - stopped raining - amazing :\

Hi Good Girl! Hey someone else who doesn't like Radiohead :D I tend to like most types of music though, especially U2 and Snow Patrol, Guillemots, Waterboys etc. I really want to hear more of these other bands Jake mentions.

I love hearing Jake speak in foreign tongues :P I also fancy hearing him try an English accent :D

Hi Sheba! Ooh jealous of you seeing Kanye West - love to see him. I really like the new album. Oh yes, forgot to say I absolutely love Justin Timberlake and saw him last year.

Hey there Winterbird - I must give them a go then as I have every album The Smiths ever did :D I'd not heard that about Gomez. I love how Jake likes these Brit bands.

Hi Xenia! I'd love to hear Jake serenade me with some of my favourite slower U2 numbers - sigh :D

Hi again Sheba :)

see you all later. Have a good day.

I stopped paying much attention to American popular music after about 1980, when I started expanding my classical collection and subsequently wrote large amounts of original music.

I've never heard of most of the groups that hsve been mentioned here, so I'm assuming that they're British? Yikes!

WDW, I personally don't see anything wrong with the Jake guitar picture, but at least we deserve to see the Jake trumpet picture, pretty please!

Two of my favorite recordings are the soundtracks to "Brokeback Mountain" and "Zodiac." "It's so easy to fall in love," and "It's not for me to say," and "The sounds of the city" bring smiles to my face. :-)

Wow, great post again, WDW -

I'm not surprised that Jake enjoys writing and playing music, he seems very creative. I have always loved The Pixies, adore Radiohead, am familiar with Toots and the Maytals (I think they're playing somewhere in my neck of the woods!), love Rufus, Bob Dylan, Beck, Bruce . . . don't know anything about the Guillemots tho. What kind of music would I like to hear Jake play/sing? I love and can appreciate just about any kind of music, so just anything, would love to hear his singing voice. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone! Back home and it's the weekend - survived my first week - just about :D

Hi Monica :D I do like Creep - it makes up for a lot of songs from radiohead that make me want to sob into my pintglass.

Hey there Paul :D I don't know too much about American bands myself - Kanye West, Justin Timberlake and Maroon 5 are probably my favourites from the US. There are some great bands in the UK right now, though. So many to get to know.

Point taken about trumpeting Jake! I like those pics too - unlike that horrible guitar pic :\

I think my favourite soundtracks from Jake's films are Donnie Darko and Zodiac. BBM's soundtrack sends goos pimples right down my spine and into my heart but for songs I reckon it's the other two. Although I love Moonlight Mile's too and I play the Jarhead one quite a bit - so I don't know! I ust got my hands on the Rendition one too.

Thanks Bertie :D You must check out the Guillemots - they are a sensational band. I saw them play last year and was blown away. The song If The World Ends... OMG I can see why Jake loves them. So melodic but with some very interesting percussion and other instruments. They're witty on stage too.

Anonymous said...

I had to post this. I'm re-connecting with Toots and the Maytals ... sorry it's "54-46" not 6446. Way before my time and even more so for Jake but to mention them as a favourite at the time is so fantastic.

I'm also remembering during halloween, if indeed that was Jake in the gorrilla outfit, then what music to remember that moment by:

I've disabled the link - just join it back up. Enjoy :D
