Jake's love of film - 'That's the performance I look up to'

Yesterday, when discussing Jake Gyllenhaal's influence on the creation and marketing of his friend David Modigliani's film Crawford, we read that Jake identified with the people of this small town - the film clearly reached out to Jake and did what good films are supposed to do and hooked him. Many of us, if asked to name our favourite films, would include at least one film by Jake, probably right at the top of the list, if not filling the entire list or at least a good chunk of it. For me, Zodiac, Brokeback Mountain and Donnie Darko are forever fighting amongst themselves for top spot, with Zodiac perhaps having the edge, at least some of the time.

This made me think about what films Jake has said that he has enjoyed or watched. As a movie actor, one would imagine that Jake is a lover of good movies and a night out at the cinema or in front of a DVD, so here is a look at just some of the films that Jake has mentioned.

At the end of 2007, in Jonathan Ross' review of a year of cinema, Jake and Heath Ledger were amongst the actors who had featured in the show during the year and whose opinions were sought on their favourite movie of 2007. Both Jake and Heath pulled out one film - Once. This film tells the story of an Irish street musician who meets a Czech girl and they immediately bond over their shared love of music. Jake: 'I saw that movie Once. I loved that movie... I just thought it was a brilliant piece of moviemaking', while Heath said of Once: 'It was really sweet.'

When Jake was promoting Zodiac back in February and March of last year - blimey, over a year ago - he appeared on MTV's TRL show. A fan asked Jake which performance by any actor he would like to have given himself. Jake chose Ryan Gosling's Oscar-nominated performance in Half Nelson. This film tells the story of history teacher Dan and his relationship with Drey, 'a 13-year-old student of his who catches him in the bathroom smoking crack after school one day. Drey understands Dan's frustrations with life; she is the child of an overworked single mother whom she barely sees, and spending so much time on her own has made her self-reliant, but also hard on the edges.'

Jake has yet to do a role such as this - one that would challenge the sympathy of his audience, far beyond the almost stone-faced ambivalence of Douglas Freeman and Rendition. It sounds like Jake has it in him and is ready for that challenge.

Another performance that Jake singled out was that of Matt Damon in The Good Shepherd. During promotion of Rendition, Jake frequently mentioned this CIA drama, directed by Robert de Niro, which culminated in the drama of the Bay of Pigs episode.

At the Rendition press conference in LA, Jake even joked that he did his best to copy the best bits from Matt's performance: 'The Good Shepherd actually, which is think - just a little shout out to Matt Damon - that's a pretty incredible performance. More about less he does, the more he does. That's the kind of performance I look up to. So I just tried to copy it.'

Whe it comes to being moved by a film, the two films that Jake has mentioned are his mother's Running on Empty and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which starred Kirsten Dunst and Kate Winslet. Vogue: 'Jake Gyllenhaal, the shambling, sad-eyed indie hipster turned Hollywood leading man, defines his generation through these distinguishing tics: "People who were moved when Kurt Cobain died, slap bracelets, Jenga, CHiPs in syndication." Then there are the movies: The Matrix, Being John Malkovich, Memento, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind—"which is about being able to love and how actually hard it is to really do that. It may be easy for other people, but it's hard for me; I cried like a fucking baby'... 'His mother, the screenwriter Naomi Foner, wrote Running On Empty ("That movie still moves me," her son says. "It always makes me cry").'

On a lighter note, Jake made it clear during the promotion of The Day After Tomorrow that he enjoys a summer blockbuster. 'I liked Twister', he said at the Ice Factory. Jake told IndieLondon that he loved Independence Day: 'I love big movies and I always have. I love watching them. I’ve never been a cineaste, preferring just small, independent films. I love big entertainment movies.' Contact Music: 'Gyllenhaal, 23, is a huge fan of the INDEPENDENCE DAY actor and thinks the wise-cracking action star is a "genius", after being pushed to the limit making The Day After Tomorrow. He says, "Will Smith is my hero. He's a genius, he really is, and you also realise that MEL GIBSON or HARRISON FORD are incredible at this type of thing. It takes a lot of concentration."'

And one of the perks of being a star is that you get the chance to attend the occasional Harry Potter premiere...

This breadth of appreciation and the range of possibilities for Jake's future career, not limited by genre or preconceptions, means we are in for an amazing time, as is Jake.

Hi everyone :) and hi WDW, how is your new job going? Thank you for this new post, it's always interesting to know what Jake likes and dislikes. I guess having a huge movie culture is part of being the great artist he is.
I wonder how it feels watching a movie through the eyes of an actor, you probably enjoy so many more details, but maybe you tend to be very or too critic aswell :)
Not having a great movie culture and a particularly critic eye I tend to like a movie simply when I like the story it tells and when it leaves a good feeling in me :P:) (not sure I'm making any sense :P)

Hi Sonia! Good to see you. Thanks, the new job's going OK, all quite scary still. I wanted to spend some time thinking about what Jake likes today as I was missing him and, as you say, I wondered what it was like as an actor to watch movies. Many of them have people in them you would know. Must be strange :)

Yes, you're making sense. I'm not a movie critic either but there are some people here who are very knowledgeable about movies and they've taught me so much :D

Hi WDW!! As usual..a very insightful posting about Jake. I saw that TRL when Jake mentioned how much he loved "Half Nelson" and wished he would have done it. I too, like you, would love to see him do a film like "Half Nelson" which really stretched Gosling to the limit.(great movie) If he does not, I believe he will be missing his chance to make another film that will impact like BBM. He does need a role that will challenge him...somehow I do not feel like "Nailed" is going to provide that challenge..but I shall reserve total judgment until I see the final product!!

Hey there Michele! Thanks - I'm glad you liked the post. I really would like to see Jake in something like Ryan's role in Half Nelson - griity, honest and stark. I think we will see it - maybe not in Nailed (but who knows what we're getting there, Political satire or romcom?) but it's a very exciting time. I think you're right - it would be good to see Jake in a role that stretches him to that extent. It'll happen.

Hey Kate :) good to know the job's ok, in the beginning it's always scary, sure you'll be totally comfortable soon ;)

I agree with you I'm learning a lot from you guys too, Xenia is definitely one of those with great movie knowledge ;):P

Oh I forgot to say I LOVE that old pic of Jake in tux with the girl. His profile there, and the way he touches her ...my goodness... pure sexyness :P

Hey, this is a really interesting post - I'd love to know what movies Jake loves! But I have a feeling that if I ever get hold of his iPod, I'd have to urge to delete all Maroon 5 songs there!!! (sorry, if there any fans of the band here :P)

My all-time favourite films, in no particular order: Blue Velvet, Breaking the Waves, Brokeback Mountain.
(it's quite strange that they all start with "B")

OMG... "Running on Empty" - that movie made me cry... River Phoenix in the performance of his life. I think I must have watched it at least 20 times.

I love "Once" too (got the DVD right after "Jake said so"), I think I would have liked it even more if I am more into "singer-songwriter" kind of music.

Out of all the films Jake mentioned here... I only disagree with "The Good Shepherd". God, that film is long - and you feel every minute of it. The direction is lukewarm... Matt Damon's performance is stony. " Jake, you're way better than him in Rendition!!!" OK.... i guess film appreciation is subjective.... lol.

Now i have a "film" to argue with Jake in the parking lot!

Loved "Half Nelson" too... I think I'll go catch "Lars and the Real Girl" this weekend.

Thanks for the wonderful post, WDW... I'll stop my ranting.

Thanks Sonia :D I love that pic too, and all that set. It's from Vogue - one of my favourite photoshoots.

Hey Winterbird :D I'm glad you liked the post - this was a real case of me thinking out loud. But NOOOO!!! I love Maroon 5! Don't delete them... Radiohead could go instead ;D

I've not seen Running on Empty - this is bad, I have to see it. I saw Once the other day and loved it and I now have the soundtrack as well. I haven't seen Te Good Shepherd so I'm very interested in your assessment - Jake is so brilliant in Rendition, I'm sure Matt would be watching.

Rant away - this is very interesting :D I'm so glad we follow an actor like Jake :D

Hi, you've received lots of good wishes for the 'new job' so I'm sending them too. This as always is a good and thoughtful post. Jake's observations always disarm me and allow me to look at things in a different way.

An interesting point was raised about if Jake can be impartial as an actor to watch and enjoy a movie just like we do. I think that would be a very hard thing to do - like if you are a teacher and you go into another person's classroom, it's hard to be impartial because you may think, 'I would have made this subject much more interesting'.

In saying that, not that I would know his choices, but I'd probably say his love of the film world would override the technical elements he would naturally want to critique. Additionally, I feel that Naomi being a writer, has greatly influenced him in looking at the story, the message, the emotion that you get out of watching a movie. He has said of his own performances that there's always something you would do better when you watch your own performance (remember Oprah ;D)

Ditto with the Maroon 5 with the exception of 'I heard 'em say'.

Pictures as usual are fun and beautiful - he's so sexy without even trying (I've got the first few minutes of Rendition on loop - why is it so dark?!)

Hi Sheba - it is great how Jake makes us look at these things afresh - I love that :D I suppose actors, most especially if its their own film, would find it agonising watching a film and wuld never be satisfied. As when Jake and Heath first watched BBM and each asked the other what they thought and neither knew!

I definitely agree about Naomi too - her influence must be huge.

So interesting discussing this :D Jake as an actor and as a member of the audience. I wonder how differently we see films?

Anonymous said...

i suspect that actors when watch their own films, will unavoidably concentrate on their own performance, they probably miss out many other elements in the film to make a concise comment.... :)

i found it cute that both Jake and Heath didn't know what to think when they first saw BBM. Maybe they didn't expect it to win the big prize in Venice! I know Ang Lee is not the kind of director that discuss what he thinks about your performance or watch the "dailies" with actors, so Heath and Jake were probably in the dark of what the film looked like for awhile...

I do remember Heath once mentioned that he got kind of insecure and low when working with Ang, cos he (Ang) never pat his shoulder or say nothing to let him if he's done a good job that day. When I first read that, I really felt for him, cos my father is exactly like that... no wonder now Ang reflects and wishes he had more time to bond with Heath... :(

sorry OT...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi winterbird - can you imagine how weird it is an actor and you're watching a truly great film like BBM but you have to get past your own performance?! You would see a great film and then worry about what you gave to it. I think it was a cute reaction of Jake and Heath and it must have been intimidating.

Thanks for going OT like that - Personally, I think ANg must have been so difficult to work with on BBM - regardless of whether this was for the good of BBM or not. And Jake and Heath were young men finding their way. I think many of us could sympathise with that and have a need to feel led. But we all have regrets as we journey through life - Ang's must be hard.

The relationship between the director and the actor is such a personal one. I always find it interesting to hear Jake discuss that.

Hey sweetpeeps. WDW what an interesting post! You do deliver!

Jake as "shambling, sad-eyed indie hipster" chuckle chuckle have never seen him shamble.

Steven Poster cameraman on Donnie D said Jake always watched his own performance on dailies, there is footage of him doing so on the set

I expect Jake is also attentive to work of director, and screenwriter, considering from where he comes.

O yes his career will be interesting, and he is still so young!

Shame on you. I could never delete Radiohead. I don't like the new stuff as much but I love the older stuff.

This was a great post. I also love to hear about Jakes likes and dislikes. He is such an interesting fellow.

I love Half Nelson. I must admit that his mention of the movie was the only reason I bought it. Now I have sort of a crush going on with Ryan Gosling. Him in his tighty whiteys at the beging sort of did that.

Have a good night all!

paulh said...

I think Jake is pretty perceptive. Ryan Gosling is sensational, even though I mistook him for Matthew Modine in "Fracture." Matt Damon is highly serious about his craft.

In an early interview (for which I don't have a link, sorry to say), Jake mentioned that he was fond of "Willow." (Warwick Davis, who played the title character, later played Professor Flitwick in the Harry Potter movies, and Marvin the android in "Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.") I have answers for everything except questions. ;-)

This was a great post, WDW. Maybe Jake will mention more movie titles that he likes.

Good morning everyone :D It;s actually stopped raining here...

Hey Pia - that must have been a great bash. Hope the recovery continues :D I've always enjoyed the thought of Jake in a theatre watching a movie knowing as he does how it was brought there and by whom.

Hi Bird Girl :D I watched Half Nelson because of Jake too - they should stick Jake's quotes and reviews on all movie posters :D

Morning Paul :) I think that quote was from GQ - I'd forgotten the Willow thing! I used to love that film and saw the actor when I was in Florida a few years ago at a Star Wars bash :D

Have a good day everyone :D

Hey WDW, hands off Radiohead!! ;)
I simply adore them, either old and new stuff...

And I loved Half Nelson, Ryan Glosling was fantastic in it.
Of course I bought it because of Jake either, and I had to have it shipped from the US since it never reached Italian theatres...:/

I'm dying to see Jake in a film like Half Nelson even if I think that Jake Twist was a hell of a challenging role too...

And I would be glad to see Jake and Ryan in a movie together, Ryan must be a classy guy, I remember his tiny black ribbon on his jacket at the Golden Globes...

Xenia said...

Oh my,
I should have said BOTH old and new stuff...this happens because I never reread my posts with due attention... :)

Sorry, blame my poor English...;)

Good afternoon, everyone.

oh.. i remember he mentioned "Willow" too! I guess every one of us has a childhood children/fantasy movie that we like... mine is "Gremlins" (and obviously everyone now knows that I am 10 years older than Jake... lol)

hey, no deletion of Radiohead!! "The Bends" is a classic.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey there! Hope everyone's having a good day.

Heehee at all you Radiohead defenders :D

Hi Xenia - nothing bad about your English :D Hmmm Radiohead... I must own up to having a couple of their CDs - very useful for putting under my desk leg at home to keep the desk level.

You're right about Jack Twist being a challenge. I could never imagine anyone else doing that role. I wonder if Jake and Ryan have met and discussed these roles.

Afternoon Winterbird :D I liked Gremlins and still have my Gismo - he lives next to my Pluto :) I like Creep because it has attitude but that's it. Jake's iPod would be safe with me - it can have all the Maroon 5 it wants :D

Have a good afternoon!

WDW,how could you???! I think you should have headphones super-glued to your ears and Radiohead's "OK Computer" played on a continuous loop until you realise that it's a masterpiece!!! JMHO ;-)

That "outrage" aside,an interesting post, giving some insight into Jake's taste in films as a viewer rather than as a participant. A film usually has to grab me from the very beginning or thereabouts because I get very, fidgety and impatient otherwise and either nod off or switch off. I'm encouraged to give "Running On Empty" and "Once",especially the latter because both Jake and Heath chose it as their film of last year.

Must just say hello to Pia,my passionate pal ;-) Hope I'm not typing too loud for your hangover,Pia - hope you had a great day and a suitably flamboyant celebration! Many Happy Returns!

twistedlogic said...

I'm sure Jake's Ipod has plenty of room for both Radiohead and Maroon5;) Speaking of which, I'm sure I remember reading a quote somewhere from Adam Levine where he said something along the lines of how he always sees Jake as his character in all his movies and how that's no mean feat as they've known each other for yonks (I think they went to school together).

I have to confess I haven't seen any of the films Jake mentions in the post. I'm not much of a movie watcher, like Nadine I'm too fidgety and impatient to commit two hours to sitting still watching something(unless Jake's in it of course)! I recorded about 15 movies when I had free Sky for a month and apart from the ones starring our much loved and missed Heath, I haven't watched any of them. I definitely want to watch Half Nelson though, as it sounds like the sort of thing I'd like - and obviously it comes highly recommended, not just by Jake but by lots of you here :) It's that time of year when I go mad on play.com as it's TL Jr's birthday next month, so I might treat myself to it if I see it on there;) It's going to be ages until there's a new Jake DVD:(

Hope everyone's having a good day - especially poor hungover Pia xx

Hi (((TL))),good to see you here,so I can tell you I will get round to that e-mail I promised, honest! As you may be able to tell from the missing words in my gobbledygook post from earlier,my brains are still roughly the consistency of Cadbury's Smash.

If I manage nothing else I try to get onto WDW every day and respond to the latest great post, but I've even been missing a day or two here and there on this, the home of serious (and frivolous;-) ) Jake worship!

Is it just me or does it feel odd that WDW is trapped in her new office and can only look in briefly during the day? It feels a bit like sneaking in and going through her drawers(!) while she's out!(Wonder who the Calvin's belong to?!) Don't worry,WDW,we'll leave everything just as we found it.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Put those Calvin's down, Naughty Nadine! Jake could come by at any time to retrieve them ;D

I can see you :D

Seriously not fun being stuck in an office.... :( Jake, rescue me....

Hey Nadine! I just wrote you an email and yahoo ate it:( Anyway, you and WDW feel free to carry on fighting over Jake's boxers, he doesn't need them when he's with me;)

Seriously, WDW, you should stand up for your rights - smokers are entitled to fag breaks so you should be entitled to Jake breaks;)

Anonymous said...

LOL!! Jake breaks... (light bulb moment) Mmmm...I hadn't thought of that! Equal rights and all that....

What is the standard etiquette or rules of a Jake break then?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey there everyone - made it home... Jake Breaks! I love that idea, TL, and I think they should be written into our work contracts :D

Hi Sheba, Nadine, TL and everybody else :)

"Gremlins" ????
I was way into adulthood by the time that came out.

For me, it was either "Sound of Music" or "Mary Poppins," as I had a mad crush on Julie Andrews from 1961 on. I was 13, and would read and reread the script for "My Fair Lady" until I wore it out. :-( I still adore the songs from both movies, as well as "My Fair Lady." I love that Maggie Gyllenhaal loves "My Fair Lady," too. As for Jake, knowing "Send in the Clowns" is one of his favorite songs puts me on cloud 9.

(Creeps over to the cupboard where the Geritol is kept).

;-)

Agreed, Jake breaks need to be written into any work contract: "as needed" :)

in the meantime, JAKE gimme a BREAK - go out for coffee, or somethin' - and leave the flannel bird shirts at home - thanks!

Hi Paul! I'm a huge fan of show tunes myself - as a student in London during the heyday of soe mighty musicals, how could I not be?! And Jake is too I'm sure, even in a non-Joking way :D

Hey there Pia :D Hope you're feeling restored now xx
