Jake in the kitchen Part 2 - 'My porn is my gourmet magazines' (Updated)

Due to my trip having been cancelled, due to the vagaries of the English weather and the fates conspiring against me in the shape of shut roads, I'm able to pick up where I left off with my investigation into Jake Gyllenhaal's legendary prowess in the kitchen. This has also been motivated by my driven need to track down the source of Jake's cookery porn quote, which I did in the end. It comes from a interview Jake did with the German magazine Maxim Fashion back in the first half of 2006 and his exact words in translation are: 'I am a passionate chef. My porn is my gourmet magazines.'

Jake also reveals in this interview that chef Alice Waters is his pin-up. 'She’s a famous chef. I met her on a party in New York and I nearly fainted because I was so excited. That’s never happened to me with any actress before.' Further snippets of interest in this interview, which you can read in translation here, includes Jake's frustration with how the concept of 'boundless love' has become a cliche. If that is the case, he insists, then all love, and that includes the love that is found on Brokeback Mountain, should be included.

Jake also showed his enthusiasm for cooking magazines in Vitals magazine in 2005. Not only that, Jake gives some tips for books, magazines, pots, pans and knives.

Also in this interview, Jake was asked what he thought about being on the sexiest lists. In the past we've heard Jake say that this means little to him, but here Jake just goes for it: 'I love that shit.' There are also some intesting and frank comments from Jake about what it was like to play Jack Twist, showing that he wasn't just nervous of the love scenes, he was also apprehensive of playing something he so clearly isn't, a cowboy.

In this interview with Boyfriend, Jake says again that the kitchen is where he is most relaxed: 'Well I love to cook so you'd probably find me in the kitchen. I just find it so relaxing.' Jake also reveals that the favourite dish of his current girlfriend (Kirsten Dunst) is 'short ribs and braised beef', something Jake has also mentioned in other interviews.

Jake's liking for Mario Batali's food, and Mario Batali, is also evident from the number of occasions that Jake has been seen not only in Mario's restaurants but also at his table.

And finally...

I believe that Jake is featured in the March edition of New York Magazine, so keep your eyes open!

Incidentally, Jake Gyllenhaal's name has now been attached to Nailed on IMDb, although just as 'rumoured' at this stage.

Edited to add: New old pictures from March 4 2008

Thanks to Stephanie at IHJ, we now have new pictures of Jake out shopping in New York City on March 4. One photo shows Jake out for breakfast at L'express with a very familiar figure. Jake is also seen coming out of a Steven Alan store, a collection that specialises in 'dishevelled perfection'!

Includes pictures from IHJ.

Mmm... it's interesting that they are putting off putting Jake's name on Nailed... maybe they are still negotiating some finer details... like how much skin will Jake show? :P

YAY! You did another Jake+food post! :P

Copper pot and a high-end espresso machine are STILL on my birthday wish list - apparently, my friends think I am not worth of such quality cookware! well, they should ask Jake's opinion.

I love the cover of Maxim Fashion.... that's one of my favourite set of Jake pictures. just yummy.

Grr - blogger ate my comment again!

Hey Winterbird! I agree, it's very weird that Jake's name is still not firmly attached to - or disassociated from - Nailed. Makes me wonder what their discussing - it'd be great if they're ensuring we get maximum Jake!

I really want a latte and cappuccino (sp?) machine - maybe we should start a petition - Jake would sign for sure :D

That's one of my favourite sets of pics of Jake too. In fact, I remember that one of my first desktops came from that set :)

I actually have a copy of that NY magazine, but I haven't had a chance to scan it yet. I'll try and get the scans up on IHJ tomorrow. =D

Hi WTW and everybody :)
I posted on your blog a couple of times in the past, and now I'm reading it daily, thanks to a very dear new acquaintance I've made, Xenia, I've realized how great your blog is! I've known Jake for little more than a year and I'm realizing there are sooooo many things I still dont know about him, but thanks to your daily posts I'm learning more and more! So, thanks a lot for the great job you do WTW ;)

Great post about Jake&Cooking: what can I say, eating good food is one of life's greatest joys, Jake's THE JOY for all senses :P and I'm an Italian, proud 'cause he loves italian food! Just perfect ;D

And I have to say I'm more and more curious about this "Nailed" project, I like the idea of Jake playing the bad guy :P I'm quite sure he'll be damn sexy ;D (and anyway I think it will be good for him and his career to try a new kind of role :)

Hi Sonia! Good to see you. You've got a good friend in Xenia - she was a wonderful friend to me in Rome :D

I'm learning new things about Jake everyday doing this site - there's no end to it or to the delights of Jake :D He loves his Italian food for sure!

I agree that Nailed could be a completely different type of project and role for Jake and I can't wait to see it. Thanks for commenting :D

(Hoping Blogger won't eat my comment for the third time in a row...)

Sorry about your trip getting cancelled, WDW:( But on the plus side (for us at least) we get to enjoy another brilliant post:) I'm so impressed how you come up with all this great stuff at such short notice! I hadn't seen that Vitals interview before - I love it when talks about BBM. Thanks too for the gorgeous pics - old and new:) "Dishevelled perfection" - love it!And nice to see our friend the Bodyguard again;) What did we decide his name was again, was it Smiler?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL!Yep, Smiler - good to see him again, looking after Jake and helping him to buy all those dishevelly perfect bits of clobber! I'm glad you liked the post :D

Hey some of our super sweeties showing up tonight - Stephanie! Sonia! Bodyguard - no, we learned his nickname name, what people call'd him, where is that video? why can't I remember such a vital detail!

Glad the storm blew you back to us, WDW. Ive gotta have supper, but just love the pictures of Jake shopping for porn. YOu are wicked.
So is Jake.

Back later. Its been a stormy day here too and I dont mean the weather.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia! I can't remember his name unfortunately, could've been Mr K, while some thought he might have had Mr Gay yelled at him from what I remember.

I thought you'd like the pics of Jake shopping for porn :D (albeit for the New Yorker and mags on home improvement!) Stormy days - hope it calms for you :D

Wow another exciting post!!! So much new Jake stuff...I can't handle it, lol. ;p Love knowing what cookware he uses. And yes it is really nice that he and Mario are such great friends. As I said in the previous post, they need to do a special going around Italy or another country. If Mario can do it with Gwyneth Paltrow he can definitely do it with Jake.

Also some great pics that I had not really seen before. And big thanks again to Stephanie for finding the new/old pics of Jake from last week in NYC! He looks fantastic.

WDW, sorry you could not make your trip but we are glad you sharing this post with us. :D

I tink it was "officer Kay" that they call'd out.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Get Real! I'm so pleased you liked the pictures, I had some fun hunting out some ones I was less familar with. I definitely think that cooking tour is a good idea:)

Jake looks gorgeous in those new pics from last week - completely edible!

And thank you for being happy to have me back :) It's been a frustrating day so that definitely makes up for it, thanks.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh yes, I'll go with that, Pia :D

what an incredibly sexy post! Edible Jake, looking guilty about all that shopping, almost fainting with delight upon meeting Alice Waters, OMG! that's my boy! incredible, edible Jake!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ooh Pia, I like that - it's good to see Jake enjoying what the world has to offer him and I love to see him shop!

I knew I had seen BG recently! Here and here are pics of him yesterday in NYC with Julia Roberts. She is filming a movie with Clive Owen only blocks from that restaurant Jake and BG are pictured at, L'Express.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Thanks so much for those links Get Real (I love Julia Roberts..) - Smiler must be an amazing and well-loved bodyguard - we've seen Jake hug him and take him out for brekkie, Julia Roberts holds his arm, he was out with Tom and Katie for the NYC marathon. He must be super-special :D And he keeps Jake safe. I want to buy him a drink :D

nice post WDW. Well we know Jake is never going to starve.

I bet he might decide to open his own restaurant down the road. Lots of actors do.

I would love to know when that IN mag article was done. Before or after Heath's death.

I'll try to find it but I don't remember seeing that mag down here in VA

Never heard of IN New York magazine. Nice two-page spread with a familiar photo, but on-line text is too small to read.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Trekfan - I reckon Jake would run a great restaurant :) We should hopefully find out soon enough what the interview says, thanks to Stephanie. I have one on order as well.

I'd never heard of it either Pia - the fact that it's an old photo doesn't make me too hopeful but I love to see Jake getting front page attention.

I have never heard of IN New York Magazine either. Will be on the lookout for it though!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Just watch out for all those xxx-rated gourmet mags though ;)

Thank you Pia for the warm welcome!:-* And thanks to Steph for the pics :)

Lol I didnt know about the bodyguard nickname, so is that Smiler? ;D He really looks like a nice guy, I saw pics of him in Rome talking and smiling with Jake, I was kind of suprised for he always looks so serious when he works ;D but I guess it's part of his job :)

Have a lovely day everybody :)

Sonia

(I've tried to create an account myself, hope it works :P)

Morning everyone - hope everyone in the UK isn't getting too battered with more storms. The wind seems to have blown in some sunshine here :D

Hey Sonia - it's so great to have you here and you got blogger working I see (I'm having some running battles with it eaing my comments at the moment).

Yep, that's Smiler - sometimes, when he's working he has that really serious look about him - quite rightly properly - but at the LA showing of Rendition Jake joked that Smiler was his date!

Have a good day everyone:D

Kitchen porn means different things to different people. Bessie
Smith had a song called "My kitchen man," but she wasn't talking about actual cooking. ;-)

Likewise for the author of the book "Clam plate orgy," which was about advertisers' subliminal messages to unwary consumers.

I confess to a certain fascination with Gourment magazine. I clip out recipes from the newspapers, and search the Internet frantically seeking recipes that use specific ingredients. I am betting that Jake does this, too. ;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! There's definitely something very sensual about cooking - alhough not the way I do it - nothing that sesual about beans on toast with a fried egg on top ;) I reckon Jake does that too, I can imagine him liking the challenge to find an amazing recipe to deal with odd things in the cupboard.

Morning WDW everyone:)

I absolutely love foodie Jake and I absolutely love this post.
Jake and my foodie/great cook mom would adore each other. And I would share your post with her if she were still here with me. She and Jake could check out magazines and books that I've never heard of before I saw their names here..:)

I have to make more time for fun over here with you so I don't get behind in my Jaking.
Our Governor's sex scandal threw me and most New Yorker's totally off balance.
back soon:)

Morning Sass! So glad you liked the post - Jake's an inspiration to me when it comes to cooking, as I'm not a natural. Although since fish discovered me I have enjoyed cooking much more :) I've been reading about your governor - wow. A proper scandal. Have a good day :D

G'morning everybody, Jake "goes to my head, and he lingers like a haunting refrain, and I find him spinning round in my brain ike the bubbles in a glass of champagne."

And Im not kidding. The picture on the cover of IN makes me dizzy. As does very thot of oysters and chardoney with JG - he is so deliciously ORAL to begin with -

O well, enuff of that.

Yes, as Sass says, many of us are in shock, the clackety clack sound of jaws falling open - WHAT? O my! Spitzer is announcing resignation this morning.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Pia :D

Oysters and Chardonnay with JG? Yes please.... Just the thought....

I could do with some of that cos I'm spring cleaning and turning my flat upside down. Jake would come in very handy as a helper :D

Ruby said...

never enough Jake being oral, Pia. ;-)

I love a man who loves to cook. Mr R is great in the kitchen. :D.

*good girl* said...

LOL you guys are all so funny ;D Thank you WDW, I'm so glad I've joined here too - and I forgot to say that yes, Xenia is really a nice person and a good friend :)

And about Jake helping you with your housework, what about him in the kitchen with his apron on...and nothing else? ;) sorry but oysters+champagne+Jake brought me to nasty thoughts... need a cold shower now :P

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Rubes! True enough. And I can vouch for Mr R's fishpie - best I've ever eaten :D

Hi Sonia! Ooh, looking good with the pic :) I could actually do with Jake's help in the shower right now, I'm scrubbing it...

Anonymous said...

Fishpie sounds good WDW! Clam pie was a local traditional favorite in East Hampton Long Island. And I always wanted to eat Oyster Pie in New Orleans.

Jake Pie - - - ?

This conversation is getting much too hot for a working day.

I once had an idea to do a calendar of men cooking because my husband was a good cook and also our summer neighbor, who was Asian and would make black bean sauce for freshly caught "snappers" and so forth. Ive always found men while cooking very sexy, esp if they're half nekkid just home from the beach, and so forth.

Thinking of Jake half nekkid with a beach towel tied around his waist. As the Beatles sing, Ive seen the photographs.

(Friend just recommended Across the Universe, speaking of Baatles. Also arrivinig tomorrow Lovely and Amazing which believe it or not Ive never seen. Also not seen Proof, but do not intend to do so, although I said the same thing about Bubble Boy and loved it.)

More than you need to know, today, probably.

FLASH! Scans of IT story up on Iheartjake.

Very sexy pix, though old and familiar, of Jake Pie, but foolish article, put together stuff.

Pix may make people faint, though.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Phew - I am knackered - I knew there was a good reason for giving up that summer job scrubbing carpets. Had enough - broken open the beer instead (while I listen to the I'm Not There soundtrack) :)

Thanks for the flash Pia - all under control, putting post up as we speak. Very disappointing content though but pics make up for a bit.

I love men cooking' too, although I fear that's a bit limited to fish and chips in my place. All this talk of oysters made me buy a stack of seafood for some experimentation :) All I need now is Jake to tell me what to do with it.

As you know, I'm a big Beatles fan - do let me know what the film is like. I've been putting off watching it.

Proof is worth it so long as you skip the bits without Jake in them (asking for trouble, I know!). I loved Lovely and Amazing.

Great article on Jake's food obsession, WDW!!!
Thanks so much:)
