On the road with Jake [Updated] - skating with Jake - and talking Jarhead

Jake Gyllenhaal's tour of New York continues through a plethora of sightings from the city's shops and restaurants. I may not have been to NYC myself (I'm not counting a drunken wedding many years ago), but my list of places to eat and windowshop is growing. And today, we have a picture of Jake leaving his hotel with an old friend.

Gawker put Jake and Reese at Del Posto. This restaurant, on 10th Avenue, is owned by Gyllenhaal friend Mario Batali and is, no doubt, a favourite of Jake's. It focuses on "Cucina Classica" and highlights 'the distinctive regional and seasonal variations for which Italian cuisine is celebrated. The Italian-American style of cookery will be included under the umbrella of "Cucina Classica", in recognition of its legitimacy as a great cuisine flowing from the Italian tradition.' The menu looks wonderful, with amazing desserts, in particular the chocolate souffle.

Another sighting put Jake and Reese - and, coincidentally, Natalie Portman - at Cafe Sabarsky. Located on 5th Avenue, this restaurant focuses on the specialities of Austria and Germany, including goulash, sauerkraut, bratwurst and strudel. Speaking as a vegetarian who lived in Bavaria, this is a menu to work around, although a genuine Bavarian torte is a treat indeed.

Finally, OK! spotted Jake and Reese at Takashimaya boutique. Also on 5th Avenue, this boutique sounds beguiling with its collection of Japanese scents, beauty products and robes.

Brothers encounter

A few weeks ago, we were discussing here the schedule for the filming of Brothers and noted that it was moving to the Los Alamos ice rink. Yesterday, an account was given of the experience a bunch of little kids had who spent nine hours skating on the ice with Jake, Natalie and Tobey. 'The kids had a long but enjoyable day of skating on the humble rink in Los Alamos, NM with the likes of Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire. I was particularly impressed with Jake’s response to our son, Cade, falling on the ice and banging his head. Jake took the time to come over to Cade and see if he was going to be okay. Cade was rather shy of course — the day had been rather long (approximately nine hours).' This is a lovely account of Jake.

And finally something completely different

What with one thing and another, it's been a while since I posted an interview with Jake. To make amends, here is a radio interview (with The Edge) Jake recorded back in November 2005 to publicise Jarhead. This link will take you to the right page - just look down the list of interviews to find Jake's.

Jake is asked about the preparation needed to play Swoff and it's exhausting reading: 'I trained like crazy. I did a lot of running and biking and swimming and lifting weights and stuff like that.'

Of course, it's not long before the subject of Jake's 'butt' comes up and Jake is asked if he had a 'butt double': 'That's my real butt! That's it, man, in all its glory.' When the interviewer reminisces that it's been no time at all since we saw the young Jake popping his shoulder in City Slickers and now he's baring his ass in Jarhead, Jake comments: 'That's nice, I like that. Quite an evolution.' As for the santa hat scene: 'That was the most gruelling and emotional scene of the movie - a lot of acting classes and preparation.'

On being one of Hollywood's hottest properties: 'It's very nice, I don't mind it!... It's nice to know that your work is getting out there and people are seeing it and that they like it. It's a good feeling - a good feeling.'

Hi Anon, thanks for that. I've updated the post - great to see Chris!

Oh, man! Okay I'll have the three
parmigiano reggianos from diffrent years with jelly and mustard and balsamic vinegar - that's fair game - forget the soaked baba - and how about bringin' out Mario for a tete a tete - how do you say this in Italian.

And Reese I gather carries the doggie bag as she seems to do when leaving restaurants. And CHRIS god bless you, sir, it's so good to see you! Natalie! O my, I must get a life, this is too excitement.

Questions remain: WHAT hotel? and why are they eating in what is essentially "Yorkville" - what are they doing UPTOWN? Oh, I guess post UN. Im glad Natalie is part of the crowd. And of course, Chris.

I have a bedspread and pillow case from Takashimaya I will go and kiss it.

And all of this is the rain!

Seriously, is there a video of Reese on Today Show? Im admiring of her political committments.

Hi Pia! That sounds like a fantastic evening - I love communing over a hearty Italian meal and a bottle of red. And how good is it to see Chris again! And I like that they bumped into old friend Natalie.

I've been reading about the UN stuff Reese did today. A campaign to end violence to women is a great cause. I can't see a video of the Today show yet, but I'm sure there'll be one.

That Takashimaya store sounds amazing! I love places like that. I love the smells and sights.

Thanks for the link, Anon :)

I'm sad to hear that, anon, but let's keep on topic, thanks :)

How great it is to see Chris! I love Jake and Chris together. :) And the Natalie sighting was great. She is a fave of mine too. Can't wait to see Jake and Nat in Brothers.

Pia, I think being uptown, in the swanky FS, has all to do with Avon/Reese charity work. A worthy cause for women. Good for her to support that.

Loving all the sightings in the city. Takashimaya is a gorgeous but totally expensive store. It is great for window shopping. I have enjoyed wonderful teas at their restaurant the Tea Box which is less pricey and has great Japanese and Asian teas and bento box lunches.

WDW, I too have some new restaurants to add to my list thanks to foodie Jake. I also have some new stores to take in thanks to fashion Jake. ;)

What a lovely story of Jake's concern over the boy who hurt himself on the Brothers set. That is our guy. :)

Thanks as always for the Jake interview.

Sorry. Uh - the topic is Jake, right? And PS starred w/ Jake in Donnie Drako, right?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Fair enough, Anon.

Hey Get Real - the tea box at Takashimaya sounds wonderful! When I eventually get over to NYC I must try that. And yes, I absolutely love seeing Chris - he looked wonderful at TIFF so I'm biased. I did enjoy the ice skating story too :)

I'm glad you liked the interview :D

Yay! It's Chris!

It's good to see our boy out and about so much. It's been a while since we've been blessed with so many pictures in one week. It certainly brightens my day. Thanks WDW. Here's a big *smooch* for ya.

"Pia, I think being uptown, in the swanky FS. . ."

Get Real, what is FS - did I miss something? And do we not know what hotel?

My Chris can scowl at camera: in a blow up looks like he's scowling straight at me. Sorry, bud. It must be annoying.

But that checked lumberjack shirt, oh no not another one, makes me scowl right back.

Still, yes, as Birdgirl says, what a treat!

Im going to bed to watch somethng, one more extra on Rendition CD I havent seen yet.

g'nite all.

Pia, FS is the Four Seasons Hotel with seems to be the hotel they are leaving. I recognize the entrance.

WDW! Thanks for providing the audio interview, it was fun!!! Altho, we do have way more info then the guys who interviewed Jake...I mean, after hours, and days, and weeks, and months and years of study...we could have told the guy that was reall Jake's very own butt in Jarhead...he never did answer the question about the Santa hat did he...
I remember the very first time I saw Chris at TIFF... he is GORGEOUS! And he was smiling. He has a very sweet, gentle smile. (sigh.)

BTW, get real, what's a bento box lunch???

Bobbyanna, Bento Box

Morning everyone - I actually got up early for a change :)

Hey Bird Girl - thanks for the smooch! I know, I was thrilled to see Chris again too :D

Hi Pia - Chris has that scowl down to a fine art! I've got to agree to having had my fill of lumberjack shirts. I'm going to watch all of the Rendition extras today. I'm also on the trail of a decent cup of coffee...

Thanks for the info, Get Real, and for sharing your knowledge of NYC :D I walked past the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills and it looked very nice indeed.

Morning Bobbyanna - and it is such a lovely butt... ;) Absolutely, Chris looked gorgeous at TIFF, and he was smiling. Great memory to start the day.

Morning! I woke up to a few unpleasant fandom news, I feel sick in my stomach... :(

I love reading that bit about ice-skating rink... Jake is just beyond adorable there! ugh... now he makes me want to have a kid, so maybe if i ever meet him, my kid would give me the edge?? lol.

Morning Winterbird - sometimes it feels like the world's gone mad :( This place and everyone here is my haven. The skating story is just lovely, I'd love to skate with Jake. I'm not very good at it so he'd have to prop me up :)

G'morning sweet peeps! I see some sun!

Couldnt watch very much of the documentary on rendition that Gavin wanted included - I did tolerate the torture scenes in the film, to my surprise, that Gavin said "were not sensationalized"

Are we gonna have to see Tobey get the s--t beat out of him in Brothers - but AS A REWARD - Jake skating!

I love to skate, would ice skate on my lunch hour at Wolman skating rink in Central Park, NYC. Smile smile smile remembering.

I think I love Jake too much.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia! Good to see you. I couldn't watch that documentary either.

When I was working in London, I spent many a winter lunch hour watching the skaters outside. I've not skated for years myself, but I love the idea of seeing Jake on skates - speedy Jake!

Loving Jake too much? Not possible - and you're not the only one :D

I am giving in to the temptation and seriously contemplating getting the "Brodre" DVD.. i was talking a friend who watched the original the other day, and the way she described Jake's character there, it's a different than I thought... Tobey's as well.

I watched about half of that documentary in Rendition, i couldn't stomach most of it, to be honest.

WDW, you're lucky that Mr WDW like most Jake's films (why not Rendition though? subject matter?). Mine only liked "The Good Girl" because he's a fan of John C Reilly!

wonder if Jake is good ice-skater. I can skate, but not very good at it. but i would totally pretend to slip if that gets Jake to come help me!!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Winterbird - yep, Mr WDW cannot watch a film about torture. He loves Morocco so I've been trying to tempt him that way but nope.

There's no way I can watch Brodre. I really want to be totally surprised by Jake's version, even though we have all these clues. Afterwards I'll watch Brodre just to see how it was changed.

I bet Jake may be a bit of a stumbling skater, in which case I offer my services to hold him up :D I'm considerate like that...

Oh, the drudgery of not being a movie star - I have to go to the supermarket :(

Thanks for the Jarhead interview! Worked first time for me too ;) Is it me or does Jake sound a little bit sleepy? I love sleepy Jake;) I may have to watch Jarhead again soon, just to appreciate the emotional depth of the Santa hat scene of course;) Lovely pics too:)

Winterbird, you're giving me ideas here. Now all I have to do is track Jake down to an ice rink, take TL Jr with me and train her to fall over dramatically on the ice ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL! That is a GREAT idea - can we take it in turns to borrow TL Jr?

I think Jake sounds sleepy in the interview too - I love his voice when he's sleepy. I think it's only right that, if so much preparation and dedication when into acting the santa hat scene, we should watch it a lot - for the quality of Jake's acting.

Anonymous said...

Haha... TL, your kid is going to be so busy... :)

"hey kid, how many ice-skating loving aunts do you have?" Jake would ask.

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW and Winterbird! I don't know...Exploiting my child to give ME the opportunity of getting close to Jake is one thing but letting evryone have a go might be a bit much (nothing to do with me wanting to keep Jake all to myself, honest!;) Mind you, she'd probably be happy to do it for some new football boots and the latest piece of HSM tat:D
And yes, it's awful how people concentrate so much on the gratuitous aspects of the Santa Dance and fail to appreciate the emotional turmoil and pathos of that scene. Philistines!

I love to see things like this. Jake is a lovely person. I'm glad I come to this site, where people understand this.

"Oh, the drudgery of not being a movie star - I have to go to the supermarket :(" [WDW]

Does Whole Foods not count as a supermarket, WDW? Is it only a supermarket if there are trashy tabloids and gossipy celebrity mags at the checkout counter? ;-)
Besides, Jake has said that he enjoys reading those things (which I have sworn off for the time being).

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Well, I'd be very happy to bribe TL Jr in order to exploit your child :D I have my standards after all... It's outrageous that people seem to miss the finer aspects of Jake's santa hat performance - such as the dedication required for Jake to have acquired such an even all over tan, for example.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! Jake is a lovely person and I love to shout it out here all I can.

Whole Foods is such a special supermarket though and those stores never seem to be full of screaming kids. One of the things I liked about Bristol Farms in BH was that it had very few trashy mags. At my local supermarket the mags are well away from the checkouts, leaving room for more tempting fare such as chocolate :D Talking of which, at this rate it's gonna be shut!
