'Oh, look, there's Jake Gyllenhaal running after a mammoth'

'At a certain point, the climate starts to shift' - don't ask me why, but in this video interview (a much extended version of an interview I posted some time ago), I love the way Jake says this. It seems only fitting, with Jake in NYC (or at least he was yesterday) and with Roland Emmerich's latest movie 10,000 BC stampeding its way to the theatres, to have a look at Jake Gyllenhaal's experience of New York City as Sam Hall - when the weather was bad.

In 10,000 BC, a young warrior has to save the world against vindictive gods, while running the gammit of a whole range of hostile weathers, not to mention a load of animals with big fangs and beaks. I think there's a girl (in distress) involved too. In other words, this is the tale of another Sam Hall, but one without the benefit of phones and fax machines, or a climatologist father for that matter.

As a fan of this type of blockbuster, I like to think that Jake likes them too and that he had fun making a film that I always love to watch, even if it was completely alien to everything Jake was used to: 'It's a very different beast. As an actor you play a secondary role to the special effects and to the movie and Roland's vision'. Also, Jake was only in a quarter of the film (although admittedly the best quarter) 'and that quarter even of the film, I don't know half of what's going on in that!'

But as far as the action goes, the hardest thing Jake had to endure was faking heat as cold: 'When you're burning up in layers and layers of clothing and everyone around the set's wearing t-shirts and everyone's like [clutching himself], you're supposed to fake it, and shake, and pretend like you have hypothermia - that's the biggest thing that I've braved.'

It's interesting to hear Jake discuss Dennis Quaid's role: 'It's nice when you respect somebody's work to be working with somebody like that - it's a lot nicer than when you don't respect their work and you have to feign it!... There's something about the work that he does and the way he does it that I would love to aspire to'. Dennis is 'the lead man of the film - That's something I look up to and hopefully one day I would like to become in the future.'

Rather ironically, Jake is now too famous to be Roland Emmerich's leading man, however much Roland might want him for the job. In an interview today about casting unknowns in his new movie, Roland said: "I knew I wanted to have good actors who had some talent. But I didn't want someone to say, 'Oh, look, there's Jake Gyllenhaal running after a mammoth.' So we went through the hard job of trying to find unknowns." Speaking for myself, I'd be quite happy to watch Jake Gyllenhaal run after anything.

This review for 10,000 BC reminded me that Roland Emmerich also directed The Patriot, which featured another father-son relationship with, of course, Heath Ledger as the son.

The picture below is a gratuitous picture of Jake's new bag, which I love and covet.

WDW, excellent post. I must say. I think Roland really missed his shot. The image of Jake chasing mammoths...or vice versa...I mean, if it's 10,000 B.C., I would think there would want very little in the way of clothing to inhibit such a chase...I seem to remember a similarly titled movie decades ago and everyone was wearing those off one shoulder bearskins, except for the hero who just had these leather "bathing trunks." Sort of...Of course this was all a fantasy. Right?...

Thanks, Bobbyanna - OMG, Jake in a loincloth chasing mammoths?! We have been robbed. And Jake wouldn't have had to contend with all those layers of clothing he was complaining about in the interview. So on all counts, someone needs to give Roland a good talking to :D Mind you, he's also saved me a bit of money as I would have had to have moved into the cinema for that one!

Hi WDW and chums!

I am a very happy Ruby today. I have a bright and shiny new MacPuter, which I am already completely in love with. Mr Ruby got it up and running for me today while I was at work and even transfered my files from the hard drive back-up of my old 'puter, so my Fanfic and Jake videos have all been restored! Hurrah!

And there are yummy pictures of Jake in NYC (good to have him out and about with Chris).

That was nothing whatsoever to do with your post, WDW, but I'm sure you'll forgive me. ;-* TDAT is not really my sort of movie, although I do like wet Jake.

Oh and a big hug to (((Nadine))), hope you feel fit as a fiddling flea real soon!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Rubes! Good ole Mr Ruby - glad it's all up and running and loaded with Jake :D I'll forgive you for not liking TDAT as it's you but I don't know how you can resist the charms of Wet Sam :P

Yep, big hugs to Nadine xx

Rubes, I hope the iPhone isn't pining ... ? :(

It's a nice post, though someone seems to be missing from the first picture.

I had the same image as bobbyanna about 10,000 BCm :D

TV newsflash - Jose Mourinho coming back to Chelsea - wha??! I need to check this out. WDW, could you Photoshop the missing person while I'm gone? :D:D

The iPhone is back to doing what it does best. For proper Jaking, one needs a nice laptop. :D

Sam is a nice character, wet or otherwise, he's smart and kind and cute. The movie's redeeming feature if you ask me. Although Nouskie can probably think of another one. ;)

Jose who?! :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Anouska - I wonder who on earth you mean ;) I just saw that Mourinho is wanting to return to England to 'kill' Chelsea! I'm loving the image of Jake in the little leather shorts evading dinosaurs...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

But now I won't get emails saying 'sent from my iPhone', Ruby.

Sam is indeed smart and kind and cute - and he's agile, tough and nimble. He also must be charming to have got hold of that many peanuts on the plane. All I get is one tiny bag of pretzels.

BirdGirl said...

Sam sure was good a fighting off those CGI wolves. :)

They thought of Jakey in 10,000 B.C., in a loin clothe, makes me blush.

*giggle*

Ahh if only…

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bird Grl - it's a lovely thought, isn't it :D I also wouldn't mind hearing Jake talk in some 10,000 BC language...

Sam was great with those wolves, he'd be just as good with mammoths :D

BirdGirl said...

True dat. If he can play a math geek and still be sexy he can do anything.;)

I have to admit when I first watched TDAT, when Jake was drinking that milk at the kitchen, I was thinking, "what a sweet looking kid". But I didn't even bother to check his name afterwards. :P

A Jake in loincloth??? - order, order, ladies! i think people have been accusing many of us of being "DOW" already.

oh... now I gotta go watch some American Idol on telly here... i like that gay kid Danny. He rocks!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Yep, Bird Girl - Jake can be good as a mathematician geen and as a stone age hunter.

Hi winterbird! I remember when I first saw TDAT - the day after a friend's wedding from what I remember - and I thought here's that sexy lad with the strange name from Donnie Darko. When BBM came out, I knew I was in for something good (that and beautiful scenery!).

Enjoy American Idol - I've just been instructed to turn Top Gear off :( So nothing for it but to enjoy those images of Jake (with some Cannes scruff) and Chris in NYC and think of the loin cloth mammoth chasing.

Loincloth, well, alright, anytnhng that will get rid of the checkered shirts. (Nice North Face backpack, though. . . )

What do you think is in that very large shopping bag he's carrying - bet he bought something really yummy for his yummy self at A.P.C.

sigh! me above

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia :D I love North Face stuff and a good North Face bag goes with everything including a loin cloth, not so sure about a plaid shirt though ;) Maybe in the bag is another plaid chequered shirt?

Thanks for transcribing the video WDW, as my computer has decided that one Jake interview per day is quite enough for me:( Unfortunately I can't remember a word of it now, what with all this talk of Jake in a loin cloth. Reminds me when I was little and used to love watching those old black and white Tarzan films;)
I never knew that Roland Emmerich directed The Patriot - small world, innit? I've never felt inclined to watch that cos I've heard it's one of those where any semblance of historical fact goes out the window and also cos Mel Gibson gives me the creeps! But if anyone can recommend it, I'm all ears:)

I'm loving Jake's backside er..backPACK too WDW;)

Anonymous said...

well there is obviously something in that shopping bag that is too yummy to be scrunched up in a backpack, that's for sure. what can it be?

(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL - ah, sorry to hear your PC's overjaked again. It really is a small world, I'd forgotten Roland directed The Patriot, which I do quite like, although it's very gory and not a little distressing in places. I watched it before I went off Mel Gibson. It's worth seeing though and the English are real baddies in it :)

That backpack is fab! I love a bag with that many straps and zips. And the backside's not bad either...

Hey Pia, it'd be nice if it's a collection of pristine white, blue or lilac shirts :D

twistedlogic said...

Can anyone work out what it says on Jake's backpack? (Not his backside, that has a "property of TL" tattoo on it;). It says "the *something* face" but I can't make it out and it's driving me mad!! Thanks:)

Thanks for your thoughts on The Patriot, WDW. Lots of blood and gore isn't exactly helping to persuade me! I'll pick it up if see it cheap somewhere.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL - it says North Face - as does almost my entire collection of winter outdoor clothing :D I may have a copy of The Patriot on DVD - I'll have a look to see if I can find it in the chaos that is my flat and bring it next time I see you :D

twistedlogic said...

So first Jake goes following you around LA and now he's copying your style?! Oh well, I guess there's worse people to be stalked by:D
That would be great if I can borrow The Patrriot - thank you!

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hello chaps :-). I valued the transcript too,WDW,because the video doesn't work for me either (although Jake in a loin-cloth definitely does!). I'm not normally a fan of the Blockbuster movie myself, but I love TDAT,not just because of Jake(no,really!)but because it carries a message I really believe in and wish more people would listen to (especially the politicians who have the power to make the necessary changes!!) Ouch, getting down off a soap-box in my post-op state is a bit painful!

Hi Rubes, glad that Mr.R has got our laptop up and running so comprehensively. Thanks for the welcome back,in fact thanks to everyone who's made me feel welcome home!

I taped "The Patriot" a few months back but never got round to watching it. I didn't know it was directed by Roland E. either. Gibson seems to take every chance he can to portray the English as total bar-stewards in many of his films and some of his views and behaviour are utterly loathsome. To think I loved him in the first Lethal Weapon and the Mad Max films.

I will have to watch it at some point simply because Heath stars in it and I want to see everything he has ever done eventually, but not sure I'm up to it yet. Too gory, too soon post-op,too soon after Heath's passing...

To close on a lighter note,LOL at "Property of TL" stamped on Jake's NTLA ("Nice tight little arse" to the uninitiated ;-) ).

Wet Dark and Wild said...

In my dreams! I'll dig out the movie :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey good to see you Nadine! Glad to see you're up to posting.

I used to like Mel Gibson years ago but I can't bear him now, but he' not too bad in the Patriot and Heath is lovely in it - and intense.

Yeah, that's what TL thinks is stamped on Jake's NTLA...

Look after yourself, Nadine xx

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Thanks (((WDW)))

twistedlogic said...

Hey Nadine! So good to see you:) Sorry the video doesn't work for you - the sppoky thing gets out of hand sometimes:( If I stumble upon a way to make it work, I'll let you know.
I know what you mean about Mel Gibson, that's what putting me off The Patriot. But "lovely and intense" Heath swings it for me, so if you can find the DVD for me WDW, that would be brilliant:) Don't worry if you can't find it though. Btw, speaking of Heath, I bought Empire magazine today, with the picture spread in it and it really is lovely, a gorgeous tribute and keepsake. But I really should have known better than to look at it on the bus :(
Ok, better change the subject before I bring everyone's mood down.

Back to studying Jake's award winning NTLA (thanks for the "initiation" there, Nadine!)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

It's a nusiance about the video not working and Jake is so young and keen in it :\ Sorry about that. I bought Empire today too - some wonderful photos, all with a lot of memories.

Keep off Jake's NTLA - I saw it first ;D

That's not what the tattoo says;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

That's so funny, TL (I think) :D

Time for me to say night - thanks for such a fun time! Catch up with you all in the morning :D

twistedlogic said...

Night hun xx I'm going to watch some Jarhead before I hit the hay myself - for artistic reasons of course. The make up artist did a great cover up job;)

Michelle Williams had just finished filming a movie called "Mammoth" when she received word that Heath Ledger was dead. Is that the film that Roland Emmerich was working on?

I'm going to be busy cooking dishes that were mentioned on the menus for Delle Posto and Cafe Sabarsky. My versions won't be anywhere near as fancy, but they'll be much more affordable. ;-)

If Jake ever gets cast in a movie like "No reservations," I'll be happy to audition as an extra.

Anonymous said...

Actually, I really like The Patriot. Tom Wilkinson, Jason Isaacs and Joely Richardson were in it, too. Heath was very good! When he was on screen, Mel sort of "disappeared." LOL!

Even tho the British were cast as the "bad guys," Mel gave Tom Wilkinson's character his props. Cornwallis really was a great general. Roland was also critical of our colonial generals, too. Some of them were total screw-ups.

For the longest time, The Patriot, along with Four Feathers, were the only Heath movies I had, until BBM. Now I am adding to my collection...for all the wrong reasons.

I just watched Rendition, along with the special features. I wish now they'd left the "phone calls" related scenes in.

The other scene, when Douglas brings Anwar his clothes and tells him to get dressed bcz he is leaving, would have been more effective if they left an earlier deleted scene in. Don't want to give it away in case someone hasn't seen it yet.

This is quite a remarkable movie. I am glad Jake did it, and I'm glad it is doing really well in rentals!

Hi everybody :D I need jetlag cures! I thought I was over it then last night I couldn't sleep til 4am and then woke at noon :( Good job I'm on holiday at the mo.

Hey Paul. What a great idea recreating some of these meals - this is one of the things I really love about following what Jake's up to because he introduces me to cuisines and places that normally I would never encounter. I think that's a different movie Michelle' been making.

Morning Bobbyanna! I'd forgotten Tom Wilkinson - he's a gret actor and was very fine in The Patriot. I wasn't so keen on Joely Richardson in it though. I haven't seen Four Feathers - I always loved the original and so didn't want to see this at the time - but now, as you say, it's a matter of catching up with Heath too late. The thing I have discovered is that he made far more movies than I'd thought.

I'm watching the deleted scenes this afternoon as I'm in no fit state to do anything else, although I am being dragged to the pub later :D

Hi, WDW.

Now that I think of it, Jake *does* make an excellent sauce Bolognese. He said so himself, indicating that it was one of the best recipes that he made. In a few hours, I will place the dish on my table, and pretend that Jake is there to enjoy it with me.

I remember what you said about being a vegetarian when you lived iin Bavaria. Choucroute may have sausages in it, but the sausages don't have to contain meat. Have you ever tried soy-based frankfurters?

Anonymous said...

WDW, sorry you are still having Jet lag issues. I know you are on vaca but do you set your alarm to wake you at a certain time in the morning? I find that helps me get back on track if I have trouble sleeping. I try and get up when my alarm goes off, even if I am tired. A couple of days of that usually works.

Wonder if Jake (and Chris) may be in Austin TX for the SXSW Festival. The documentary Jake was part of, Crawford, premieres in the next couple of days!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul - enjoy the feast. I love veggie sausages and I have tried the frankfurters, very good. You're making me hungry - I'm having tapas tonight :D

Hey Get Real - I should set my clock but I just can't sleep at night. I'll try that for tomorrow though - I'm going for the whiskey approach tonight :)

Is it really the SXSW festival already! That's amazing - doesn't seem anytime at all since the last one - this year has flown by. We'll have to keep our ears open, espceailly regarding Crawford.

paulh said...

I think Jake would have liked the food on my table. ;-) The bolognese sauce turned out to be very tasty. I was so full by the next to last course that I took a break from it. Coffee and dessert are coming up in a few minutes. :-)

Hey WDW:

I needed some time away but am glad to be back and sharing in all the Jake goodness. This place is a haven. Enough said.

I agree, it would have been wonderful to see Jake in 10K BC. I mean, hello, have you seen the costumes or lack of it? LOIN CLOTHS BABY. And spears. I am happy that Jake is famous and enjoying success...but...too famous for LOIN CLOTHS? Sigh. I think I'm going to slip into a fantasy where Jake is in 10K BC and I'm his retoucher making sure he's all mud splattered in all the right places. :) Hope you're well, WDW. - Em

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! blogger didn't notify me of your comment for some reason so sorry I didn't reply yesterday. I bet Jake would have loved that - me too :D

Smilesalot - so good to see you back :D I would adore to see Jake in a film wearing a loincloth and brandishing a spear - who needs plot, who needs dialogue?! To have become too famous for a loincloth is a sad state of affairs. Mud spattered too :P Maybe you should write a prehistoric fic :D

I'm good thanks - except for a nachos and beer hangover
