You can be in Nailed! Jake on Brokeback - 'It moves in a way people aren't used to'

You can be in Nailed too! Should you live anywhere near Columbia, South Carolina, it appears you have three alternatives: 1. You get a part as an extra yourself; 2. You get your daughter (aged 7 to 12) hired as an extra; 3. You get your car a part instead - this last one is obviously the least desirable. Incidentally, I couldn't help but be interested that they only want cars from the 50s, 70s and 90s. What was up with the 60s and 80s? Castings will be held at Dutch Square Mall at 421 Bush River Road, Columbia, on Thursday and Saturday - full details here.

There is also information about the casting of more prominent roles. As we were discussing earlier, Catherine Keener (who starred with Jake in Lovely & Amazing) - along with James Marsden and Tracy Morgan - 'are in final negotiations to star opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel in David O. Russell's romantic comedy Nailed'. Is it really going to be promoted as a romcom? Nailed is due to begin filming in South Carolina on 14 April and still Jake Gyllenhaal is only 'rumoured' to be its co-star.

Brokeback revisted

Some time ago, we were discussing what could well be one of Jake's best interviews to date - it took place in Venice in September 2005 and Jake was interviewed by an Italian journalist who had clearly fallen under the spell of Brokeback Mountain. He asked Jake just the kind of questions that Jake responds to best of all. This interview quickly vanished but now it's back and so I want to grasp the opportunity to repost the interview, and some of Jake's answers, because it will disappear again and it should be preserved. I urge you all to watch it while you can.

The polarities of Brokeback

Jake: Ang describes it the best when he says my character is representative of the New West and the that Heath's character is representative of the Old West. The idea that, Heath's... working hard and staying where you are is what life is and my character's more about progression and moving out of where you've become into something better, or what you consider better, is the New West. It's the place where they both meet and where they both meet is a real place of love.

Ennis is introverted and doesn't share much and I think that Jack, my character, is expressive and wants, I think in a weird, interesting way, beyond ahead of his time and wants this thing to work in the real world and the reality is that somewhere it can't - it can only really exist on Brokeback Mountain.

Jack moving on

Jake: I think there's an issue with like soulmates... I think a soulmate is really someone who not only are they your bestfriend but they're also someone who you... sleep with. But when you can't sleep with them ultimately there's a physical urge that overcomes you. You're a human being and you're alive. And I think that with my character, they drift apart. Their love is still deep but they drift apart and he has to look for at least some kind of physical resolution with someone else. He can't see Ennis that often.

Thanksgiving scene

Jake: I think there just comes a point in everyone's life, if they're hiding things or not living a life they want to live, where they crack. I think also there's a sense too with my character that he puts up with a lot from other people. He puts up with a lot of criticsm and he puts up with a lot of - not getting what he really needs and he compensates. And at that point he's just tired of not being called a man and he's tired of not - that definition of whatever a man is - what you're supposed to be. He has a family, he loves his son and he's not going to let somebody tell him that he's not the father of his son.

It's funny cos here I've been asked a lot of questions about how my character's more feminine or something than Heath's character and I find it a real... It's a little offensive simplification of what masculinity is and it's exactly the same thing that makes him so angry at his father-in-law in the Thanksgiving scene because it's just naive. What is masculine and feminine? The idea of a gay man, a straight man, whatever it is, it's just an unfair assumption. The idea here is the idea of love and that's really the hardest part and the most difficult of all!

The setting of the story

Jake: It's a real universal story. It had to find its place... it happens that there's an irony in the time that the two of them get together as it's considered the ime of free love and stuff like that. And yet they're not free to love at all. My parents always talk about that time - 'Oh, we were crazy then!' - and I'm like, Yeah, but a lot of people weren't allowed to do what they wanted to do and how they really felt. It's different for everybody and that time's a juxtaposition of what you assume that time period to be.

The Wild West of Brokeback

Listening to Jake discussing the polarity between the Old and New West represented by the two characters in Brokeback Mountain reminded me of this feature (from later in 2005) when Jake brought the contrast up again: 'Ang talks about how Heath's character is a representation of the Old West, and I am the New West, and in the amalgamation of the two, that's where love is. How they are both right and both wrong in their separate ways, and when they come together, it's all right.'

Jake also discusses the contrasting ways in which he and Heath approached their roles: 'Ultimately, me and Heath did come at it from separate corners. And in technique too, in style of acting, we're very different, and it helped the story, us not talking about much of anything before we did it. It was a new approach for me, and it was really hard... I sometimes made choices that were grander, and when I saw the final cut of the movie, I was surprised with the takes that Ang chose: A lot of them were early takes, before I made bigger or riskier choices. There is a subtlety that goes through the whole piece. It becomes torturous after a while as an actor, because it's not your typical interpretation of what a performance should be. In service of the story it works, but as a performer you feel repressed and held back, you know?'

Jake's loneliness and frustration were channelled into his portrayal of Jack: 'In particular, the inability to talk to Heath, or even talk to Ang about what was going on, does ultimately come through. I also think that more than Heath or Ang, I have an intention in my will and my life to want to move, and change, and want to force things out of people. I want to get to the truth of things, I don't want to just sit there sulking, and letting things be. I think that was Jack's intention as well, to want to get things out there, to always force the issues, push them forward.'

And finally: 'I don't worry about people not getting it... I think people are much smarter than that, and more open-minded. Even though it's a sad movie, it's ultimately hopeful. There's not a perversity to it. People mistake riskiness for perversity, for shock value. People expect to be shocked from this movie, and what they really get is a sense of love, of holding on to love, and a salient sense of regret that is not in movies right now. It's a really simple film and it moves in a way people aren't used to, but it gathers up on you, and you're nailed with it. [I hope it] takes people to a place most movies aren't brave enough to go.'

This post is dedicated to my good friend Linda, with whom I was discussing Brokeback Mountain late last night. Thank you for being there.

oh i love that Italian interview. you're right, it's easily one of the best interviews Jake has made. Proved once again that, if you ask intelligent questions, Jake could give you insightful answers.

I just ordered Eric Patterson's BBM book (still waiting for it to arrive from US), even though I've read countless articles and discussions about the film already, it's never tiring to "talk" and "read" some more about the film. And Jake is particularly insightful on the masculinity issue that associated with both the Brokeback story/film and homophobia.

btw, it's very easy to download and keep videos from youtube. I've saved that video as flv file now.

Re "Nailed"... it think having Jake's name attached to it helps them to sell this project to other actors, it's quite possible that the "rumoured" bit is used to protect both parties, probably still have some finer details to work out.

Too bad TL doesn't live in S. Carolina! TL Jr could have been a great help!! :P

Hi thre Winterbird - oh, this is an amazing interview - quite possibly my favourite BBM one (I have some other Cannes favourites). It was because this one disappeared so quickly that I started downloading them :D

Let us know what the Patterson book is like - I'm intrigued by it and have read little bits and pieces. I should buy it :D

I agree about the "rumoured" label. Jake's name is a big pull - arguably a lot more so than Jessica's - and who knows what negotiations are going on right now. It's a fascinating process.

Hope you're having a good night :D

Hey there,

Just trying to catch up on all the great posts. :D

Hope everyone who celebrated had a nice Easter. Wishing all the birthday peeps a very Happy Birthday!

Lots of JakeNews! Again can't get over how fab he looked at that Scholarship luncheon. What a great cause and thanks for the info on how he got involved. How wonderful to help someone out who really needs the support. Gotta adore our Jake. :)

More Nailed news! Exciting casting, really like all of them.

WDW, good luck with the new job.

Okay, back to catching up, lol.

Thank you thank you thank you for reposting that interview. I have heard so much about it and regretted not seeting it. It's very insightful. I love his take on a soul-mate though not necessarily agree with some of it, I like that he acknowledges that Jack tried to find a physical manifestation elsewhere of the love he had for his soulmate Ennis and I guess people today do that especially when they can't be together but often end up being unfulfilled and disappointed. A very good interview. Btw, what is an flv file?

I still cannot watch BBM all the way through without doing the "ugly cry". It's all too real now and the poigniancy takes on even more significance now for all the major players who got hurt in this love story. BBM stands head and shoulders above all films to me, I can't explain.

Jake is usually so calm and still during interviews but I noticed he was fidgeting a lot, like Heath did (I wonder if he got bitten or something). Btw2, those pictures in Venice are beautiful of the two of them. Look at Heath's shoes, I love his lack of image and self-importance. Jake made a real connection to Heath. There have been no other premiers where Heath has had so much fun and smiled so much as BBM because Jake and Michelle made it fun for him.

If I could get some time off work I would be there like a shot auditioning for any part as an extra on Nailed. I hope that one of our Gyllenhaalics gets chosen so they can represent all of us, that would be so cool. I too am disappointed that they are starting to market it as a romcom. Political satire seems much more interesting to many of us. So jake is still only "rumoured" to be attached to this project. I've not heard him talk about it at all. He's spoken of the "moon project" but not this one.

And, finally, I went out and bought my copy of Rendition and I can't wait to go to bed tonight so I can watch it uninterrupted over and over again - ahhhhhh!

Hey, good to see you Get Real :D Jake looked so gorgeous at that luncheon - sigh. Thanks so much for the good wishes for the new job - I'm very nervous but hopefully I'll feel better when my first day is done :\

Sheba, thanks so much for that comment and I hope you have a great night with Douglas :D

I was thrilled to see this interview was available again. Everyone should see it. Jake reveals so much about how he managed to breath life into Jack Twist - that mix of dreams, aspirations and having to make the best of what life throws you.

Wouldn't it be great if a Gyllenhaalic got a part in Nailed?! It's about time one of us got a bit part in a movie and then we could 'spot' them :D Political satire is definitely better than Romcom. Hopefully that was just this particular site. I'm still pining for the Moon project :( Just great to see Jake's future films in the news :D

Thank you so much for finding that Italian interview! I remember it from before and I was gutted when it disappeared, so I've downloaded and saved it now:)
(Btw, Sheba, FLV is a type of file you can download and save YouTube videos with, a quick google seaech should help you find more details :))

I agree this is one of the best BBM interviews, intersting and intelligent questions and answers. I particularly like the bit about Jack's masculinity. The fact that neither character was a stereotypical gay man,in the way gay men are often portrayed in film and TV, is one of the reasons why the love between them is so believable, because it just happens naturally in a world where you would least expect it too. I think that's also why so many people on the other end of the scale were so extreme in their condemnation of the film, without ever having seen, because it called into question all their stereotypes and prejudices. Brilliant interview, thanks agin for finding it:)

Hey Winterbird! The thought of moving to SC did cross my mind when I read the post. Maybe everyone could have a whip round for me;)

Hey WDW and everybody, I'm right back from my Easter fatigues and I've just found out that I've got a lot to catch up with...

You WDW did a wonderful job obvioudsly alla the time...:)

The interview you posted is one of the best indeed, I've got it among the extras that my Italian BBM Special Edition is provided with...

And, needless to say, Jake is gorgeous...

BTW, could someone please tell me how can I download videos from YouTube? Please?

It's good to hear about future Jake films, as always, and Nailed is surely a mysterious strange project...But I've got good vibes, sort of 'Secretary' vibes...:)

twistedlogic said...

Welcome back, Xenia! To download YouTube videos,go to keepvid.com, that should have all the info you need. Or you could download the latest version of Realplayer, which also lets you download and save Youtube vids:)
That's an interesting thought about your Secretary vibes for Nailed, I loved Secretary, so if Nailed is in the same vein I'll be very happy:)

Annie Proulx has made the tension between Old west and New West a major factor in many of her stories (see "Bad Dirt"), and also her novel "That Old Ace in the Hole."

I'm fond of one story about two feuding cattle ranchers: one of them invested heavily in the best cattle and methods, while the other just let things kind of happen. At the end of the day, they came out absolutely equal as to results. :-)

Sorry, I live too far from South Carolina to be an extra... I may wait until Jake films that movie about JFK Junior. ;-)

Anonymous said...

Thanks for reposting that interview. I adore it..and was so devastated when it was taken off the net. Jake is just so sensitive..or seems to be anyway. It was certainly destiny that he portray Jack Twist in BBM. Thanks again for all your fab postings...
Michele

Thanks twistedlogic for that info, will look into it. Me too, with the downloading please.

Paulh, what movie about JFK Jnr? I remember posting about 2 years ago that I'd like him to portray JFK Jnr - is their a project in the works?

I am so jealous that the Italian version of BBM has extras on that we don't. When are they going to release deleted scenes, interviews, extended making of etc? Now, more than ever is a good time to do it as it will bring great comfort to many of us.

As for Jessica Beale, she's a beauty however, I can't remember seeing her in anything so I've no idea if she will have chemistry with Jake. Although he has the habit of making those he's in scenes with look creditable because he's instinctive and reactionery and has good improvisational skills so she should be ok.

Off to bed soon to re-connect with Douglas xxx

HI there TL - I reckon we've all got to move - we have til Thursday. You have a double chance with TL JR and if we buy some knackered old car wrecks we could get those in... I'm sure I could do an American accent if pushed.

This interview is incredible - as you say, because it highlights that this film is all about the questioning of stereotypes - both for Jack and Ennis and for us, the audience. Jake understood his role inside out.

Hey Xenia - good to see you! Hope you had a lovely break. So this interview is on the Italian special edition? Wow - what an extra. This interviewer is a Brokie, without doubt. As TL suggests, I tend to download videos with Real Player (although it does crash my PC a bit).

Hi Paul - thanks very much for bringing Annie into the discussion. She hs an amazing feeling for the West. I'm sorry you're too far away from SC - I'm waiting for Jake to make good on his recent promise to film a movie in the UK :D

Hi Michele! I was upset when this interview disappeared too, before I could save it. I'm so glad you like the postings :D

Have a good night everyone! I suppose I should prepare for tomorrow (someone pass the whisky...) :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sheba - I can recommend TL's suggestion for downloading.

It's crazy isn't it that different regions have different extras for BBM like this. The BBM DVD was just such a disappointment, even now. This film deserved more. And I know that Ang probably wanted the film to be preserved just so but Brokeback Muntain is extraordinary and we would have lapped it up.

Enjoy yourself with Douglas :D

BirdGirl said...

Hey people,

I hope that everyone had a nice relaxing Easter. I think that I relaxed too much.

Yay Xenia is back. It's been a long week girl.

I was also disappointed with the extras on the BBM DVD WDW. I still kind of think that they will come out with some ultimate, super duper, special edition. And I hate to say it but, now with Heath’s passing, they will try and cash in on it more then ever.

Have a good night everyone. And good luck WDW.

Hey, all. For those in the US, Jake is scheduled to appear on Late Night with Conan O'Brien this Thursday evening.

This may be old news for some, but I just found out. I wonder what he's promoting? Maybe "Brothers"? Take care!

Hi Bird Girl! Hope you had a good easter - impossible to relax too much :D Oh, I could rant for an age about that DVD :( Thanks for the good luck - very nervous :(

Hey there Rocket Science Chick! Great name btw. Thanks for that. I wonder if it's a repeat? Thanks for letting us know. That is definitely something to watch, although I can't so someone's gotta cap it!!!

Night all :D

Thank you WDW for this beautiful post, I agree with Winterbird, it's always good to read and talk about BBM, I can never say how much I love this movie, it's just too intense <3
And seeing Jake being interviewed in Italy makes me feel so sorry for not having known him back in 2005 :( even though I feel blessed for having seen him in Rome :)

Oh, and thank you guys for the infos about how to save vids, I'll have to work on this, it's just too useful!

Thanks so much Winterbird - I appreciate that :)

Hey Xenia! Thanks for the good wishes. I hope you've had a good day :D

Hi there Zodiac :D I loved the way that jake used his hands in tis interview too - very gentle but also very strong. Like you, I was so sorry when this disappeared before.

Hey Sonia :D I'm sure Jake will be back at the Venice Film Festivl at some time. I know what you mean though - I get such a thrill when I see old pics of Jake in London. And yeay! You sure Jake in Rome too! Thanks for the good wishes :D

Hey (((WDW))) so glad you've got through your first day, hopefully unscathed! I've been thinking about you all day (when I haven't been asleep! Had a go at doing just a very short walk and a couple of small chores in the house and it knocked me flat!)

I can't wait to immerse myself in this Brokeback post, although it might have to wait until tomorrow before I can concentrate on it properly. As you know,"Brokeback" is my favourite ever film by a phenomenal margin and, although I love all of Jake's performances, I doubt any other character will supplant Jack Twist in my heart. Moreover,it is so much more special, poignant and incomparable now because Heath,Jake's partner in that heart-breaking pas de deux,is so tragically lost to us. He was born to play Ennis del Mar,as Jake was to play Jack - if only we had been allowed to keep him for the long, happy and creative lifetime we'd hoped for for him (thinks of (((Matilda))) especially :-( ).

Sorry to be downbeat, just a quick skim through the post for now has made me very wistful. I was intenting to try braving the whole film again in the next couple of days. Not sure I should even try it :-/

Anyway, hugs to (((WDW))) for getting stuck into that new job! Good on yer girl. See y'all later...xxxxxxxx

hey woof woof woof WDW welcome back home, have been thinking about you. (runing around in circles wagging my tail)

Im such a doofus, cant bother figuring out how to save videos. UTube keeps grabbin' em back. eff you, UTube. Oh well. Modern times! although the DIVINE interview via the dutch network keeps giving among my favorites. I like this interview the best, frankly. When Jake starts with his Jake and Ang stuff, I think, man, they are like milk and water, whatever that means - love 'em both but I'll take Annie P saying the story is about rural homophobia. (whatever)

Nadine, I love your posts. Folks who call me a drama queen should meet YOU - we are people of the heart!- to hell with the keeper of the Eddystone light (obscure reference)

Directors commentary on Love In the Time of Cholera is super! Southland Tales at the P.O. waiting for me for this weekend. Yay! Jake rules!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Nadine! Thanks so much - I got through the day relatively unscathed and have just eaten a dinner that was burnt to a crisp - must've been hungry :D I'm so glad to hear your recovery is continuing and you're getting out into this freezing fresh air :)

I hope you enjoy the interview and post when you feel up to it, and I think it may not be a bad thing to just watch the film and let yourself go with it - if you can. It does me so much good when I get the chance.

Look after yourself, my friend xx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good to see you Pia - we posted at the same time - I hope you had a good birthday. Thanks for thinking of me :D

I love it when Jake gets carried away talking about Brokeback and the shock to his system when dealing with Ang's style of communication. I love how Jake managed to make sense of it and produced such a performance.

I'm looking forward to hearing what you think about Southland Tales. I'm intrigued to see it.

Hey WDW - unscathed. yay!

BBMT interviews - as Jake said, in Dutch interview in Venice, they were given the story, and the screenplay, all they had to do was put on the coats and get on with it.
