Jake - 'Every actor wants to be a rock star and every rock star wants to be an actor'

The other day we were talking about Jake Gyllenhaal's musical credentials - including his time in a band and the days when Jake used to write songs. We've seen pictures of Jake playing the guitar (although one tends to brush over this particular Interview outtake), blowing the trumpet, and we've seen that, at more than one awards ceremony or public event, Jake likes to belt out a bit a disco anthem, preferably in falsetto.

And then there have been the times when Jake has taken to the stage solely to sing and entertain. Jake may have missed out on the role of Christian in Moulin Rouge but there is a musical in Jake and it needs to be brought out. If one should have any doubts about that, watch this, Jake's performance on SNL. And while we're talking of SNL, there was also this.

At times Jake has told us of his obsessions for certain songs - for the Travis song on the Moonlight Mile soundtrack and for Candy Shop by 50 Cents. He has also mentioned his appreciation for showtunes, even re-enacting on Conan his enthusiasm for The Edge's rendition of Send in the Clowns during a performance of Miracle Drug at a U2 gig.

That Jake enjoys a good gig is clear and this is surely a perk of having an A-List name - Jake can be there in the wings for any act he chooses, and not always just in the wings.

This seems like a good time to repeat one of Jake's musical quotes: 'Well, I think every actor says they're a singer. I don't know any actor who doesn't. They claim to be, every actor wants to be a rock star and every rock star wants to be an actor, which is probably true. But I've been singing all my life. My band, which broke up, was called Holeshot, and it was like rock, fusion kinda like, a little bit of like, I guess you could say influence like jazz. I love to play music.' What music do you like listening to? 'I love Tom Waits, I really love Tom Waits, I love Radiohead, I love Belle and Sebastian. I love so many and every time I remember answering this question and I go to my CD collection, I'm like, 'Oh! I should have said this, and I should have said that!' Because there are so many bands that I love so much, but those are the ones that are in my head.'

And just in case you were wondering, Jake's quite a mover as well.

Heh, probably so true. I think everyone wants or wanted to be a rock star! I always wanted to be a backup singer, and would have been perfectly content with that! But alas, it was not to be. Sigh. But I really, really love music! ;)

You are so right, Jake has a musical in him that really must be done someday. I adored his SNL performance, he's very talented. He's so great.

Thanks, WDW! :)

Hi Bertie! I love my music too and I love that Jake walks around with his iPod, sings in the shower (deep breaths), and seems to burst into song when he's excited. And I really enjoy listening to Jake discuss the bands and sounds that grab his attention and make him want to sing and dance.

There's a lot about the musical Jake I want to rave about - this was one lttle bit. Thanks so much for commenting :D

Hey, WDW - sounds as if you're settling in if you're lifting a pint with chums (is this proper pubspeak?) after work. whats the diff between real ale and faux ale?

Lovely vids, Jake in action, I love Jake in action, and singing. Ellen video and SNL opening skit my very favorite Jake moments.

Thanks Monica for Nailed info - fairly palatial temp. quarters - I thought they all lived in their trailers, what do I know. Was quite thrilled by idea of Jake and his Toucher in the same trailer on set of Brothers. I live in a dream world, I see. Hope there is a nearby gym.

Morning everybody :D

Thanks Monica for the Nailed link - wow - those houses are beautiful! Morning Pia :D A world away from trailers. I have to run so I'll catch up with you in a few minutes. Have a good day :D

Hi Pia :D I'm a big fan of real ale - it's the warm, darker, non-fizzy beer, preferably drunk in a pint glass with a handle. Lager is the fake stuff :D

I love, love the Ellen video - can't watch that enough.

Hey Monica, we've only heard Jake say occasional words in foreign languages, notably French - and we always like it :D

I'm really thinking about Heath today and missing him on his birthday.

Hey WDW and everyone, hope you're all having a good day...:)

The imagine of RockStar Jake makes me think of Jake/Jimmy playing his rock-and-roll guitar!:)
In the movie commentary Blair Hayes says Jake is a professional guitar player! Yay!

Morning Xenia - hope you're having a good day too - Friday! Thanks for the reminder about Jimmy playing the guitar in Bubble Boy, I'd forgotten that one! It was funny when Jake had to turn away so noone could see his fingers during the difficult bit :) That commentary is fabulous.

G'morning y'll, rain and snow, unbelievably dreary.

Yes, Heath: - I cried a river for a couple of weeks after his death, that was so tragic: but since I didnt follow his career as I do Jake's, I dont "miss him" = his spirit is for me like a candle flame, not "gone" - but sorta dancing like some kind of light in a Shakespearean play, Midsummer Nights Dream, maybe -

sayings like Rest In Peace bother me, do the dead rest? I dont think so, I think the dead are very busy doing stuff. Im so longing to see Heath as Joker. I think of him as spiritual family.

A question: does Jake have to take out his contacts when he swims in the ocean, when he sleeps, etcetc.

That's a good poiont about Jake taking out his contacts when he swims. Maybe he has prescription goggles?

Hi everyone! back home and it's the weekend - good to see you all :D Someone open a bottle...

Hi there Pia - Heath's loss is hard for so many reasons and I wish that I'd followed him more closely.

Speaking for myself, I'm as blind as a bat when I'm swimming. On holiday I swim in prescription sunglasses and keep my head well above water. Jake must take his contacts out when he sleeps.

Hi Paul :D

Hey,

I forgot about Jimmy guitar playing. The Land of the Lost theme has never been sung more beautifully. ;)

I am thinking about Heath a lot today as well. I think that I will have a drink in his honor tonight.

Hope your Friday is going well.

Hi bird Girl :D I'd forgotten that about Jimmy too - Jake played the guitar very... enthusiastically ;D

Heath has been in my thoughts today so much and tonight's post is all for Heath.

Hope you're having a good Friday too :D I'm so glad it's the weekend...
