Jake Gyllenhaal - Prince of Persia

It seems like barely a week goes by without Jake being linked to yet another superhero role - whether in jest or in earnest - or in that hazy world in between. This week is no different, although, to be fair, this isn't a superhero role so much as a role straight out of a videogame, literally.

Jerry Bruckheimer, the man responsible for the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, is next turning his attention to the Prince of Persia, which is also to shown in three films and produced by Disney. Bruckheimer has a director - Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) - and now he's looking out for an actor who will do full justice to the flowing white shirt (actually the shirt is optional), leather boots and sword fighting shenanigans of the Prince of Persia. Orlando Bloom was first linked but that has been dismissed (Disney: “There is absolutely no truth to this rumor”). The latest candidate is none other than Jake Gyllenhaal.

As one commentator says: 'Gyllenhaal’s peers all have franchises in the can or on the way, and while he’s not the obvious choice for the adventure video game adaptation (who remems playing it on Turbo Duo?), he definitely adds legitimacy like Depp did for POTC.'

Should this turn out to be true - and the film is due to be released barely a year from now (June 2009) so we should know pretty soon - then Jake will have his own franchise and it's a swashbuckler. Here is the plot of the first film (The Sands of Time) according to IMDb: 'Set in medieval Persia, the story of an adventurous prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. Which is why after the prince was tricked by a dying Vizier to unleash the Sands of Time that turns out to destroy a kingdom and transforms its populace into ferocious demons. In his effort to save his own kingdom and redeem his fatal mistake, it's up to the prince and the princess to return the sands to the hourglass by using the Dagger of Time, which also gives him a limited control over the flow of time.'

According to someone who has seen a version of the script: 'Parkour is finally going to be given a worldwide audience with Prince of Persia. Because of the incredible athleticism and shape you have to be in to practice Parkour, I would think that narrows down the choices to play Prince of Persia’s lead character... One of the producers said in the trades that Prince of Persia is a 9th century Indiana Jones and it reads and feels like one.' [Parkour is 'a physical art of French origin, the aim of which is to move from point A to point B as efficiently and quickly as possible, using principally the abilities of the human body. It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment — from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls.'] A good job indeed that Jake's ankle appears to be on the mend!

We are advised to keep an eye on Jerry Bruckheimer's own website.

As someone who has always fantasised about the whole idea of Jake being cast as an Indiana Jones (20th century or 9th century), a big part of me hopes this is true and we get to see Jake saving the world and its princesses while leaping, romping and battling his way through exotic deserts, mysterious cities and luxurious tents in opulent oases. Of course, another part of me thinks is this just another joke, or, if it's true, how good a script can this have? I can't help musing over who would be a great baddie to play opposite Jake. I must admit, however, to having enjoyed playing this particular game for years, although my Prince usually falls into a spiked pit after only three levels - I trust that in the movies Jake would fare better. We've already seen how good Jake is in deserts.

I dunno, in the right hands this could a fun project for Jake, although I couldn't read that plot synopses without giggling He does need a big franchise and wants one, too. I was doubly bummed when he wasn't tapped for the new Indy movie. Shia LeBeouf grates on me. I find him smug, with little accomplishement to back up the attitude. Jake is definitely in good enough physical condition to carry off the stunts, and would probably have a ball doing them. Dunno what they'd do about the blue eyes, though. lol

Hi JoeAnn :D I agree this could be very fun. I had such a laugh with that plot summary too - I can just imagine action Jake, all swashbuckling and in flowing robes (or bare-chested :P). I think Jake would enjoy it too. I was gutted when Jake didn't get the Indy role. The blue eyes would look stunning :D

Looking at the picture you can see Prince of Persia does have blue eyes joeann!:)

As odd as it could seem, since I never play videogames and I don't like them at all, I'd be enthousiastic to see Jake in some spectacular movie, and showing off his beautiful body...:)

The more I hear about this, the more I love the idea. It sounds like pure magic fantasy, and something that would appeal to everyone. He'd be beautiful in it. :)

Hi Xenia - I would love to see Jake in a spectacular movie too. I am a bit of a computergame player and I used to love this one - but I was so useless at it!

Hey Bertie :D It's very possible that if this were in the cinema - with Jake in the film - I would never leave the theatre!

Anonymous said...

Me too! I remember getting lost in fantasy reading 1001 Arabian Nights as a child - totally beautiful. This would bring it all to the big screen. :)

I loved that book, Bertie! And all those Aladdin and Sinbad movies. I would so love to see Jake as some beautiful and romantic exotic action hero. He'd be wonderful and the whole thing could look so sumptuous. I could get carried away with this one :D

I can see this, absolutely! - although I had seen Jake in a few films, I didnt recognize the actor who stepped out of the pickup truck in BBMt - an exotic male beauty. Id never seen anything like this before. Ive forgotten that initial impression, amd of course, proceeded to be taken, as I was, by the story, and characters, and the beauty of both men.

gosh couldnt ang lee direct? and while Jake is still in his twenties, please. height of male beauty and physical powers.

Hi there Pia! I can definitely see it. The first time I heard it I took a little step backwards but the more I think of it the more keen I am that Jake takes the plunge and embarks on this movie adventure. And yes, Jake looks so good, he is in his prime for this. Lots of fingers crossed :D

I'm out for cocktails after work to celebrate yesterday's fabulous experience with Peter and then I'll be back!

Goodness, I do see Jake as a prince for sure. Good heart, smart, hot and beautiful, battling others, being saved, saving the world battle... Oh my! THUD. If done right, this could really be a little bit of heaven.

Hmmmmm...Dark good looks, big blue eyes, perfect body. Definitely Jake.

Mmmm...let me think...swashbuckling Prince Jake in a flowing white shirt unbuttoned to halfway down his chest, using his "incredible athleticism" to jump over rocks, swing from trees, swim across rivers, etc etc...*swoon*

Not sure if there would be much in the way of plot or character development, but the above would pretty much make up for that;) So I say: go for it, Jake!!:D

I hadn't heard about Prince of Persia before (Is that the singer who was responsible for "Purple Rain"?), so I'm not part of the target audience for this series.

If they don't start filming for another 3 months, Jake will have plenty of time for healing his ankle. Disney also has a lot of other people to consider, too...

Wasn't that Parkeur style of running featured in the last Bond movie? I remember laughing that Bond wouldn't have any energy to beat up the bad guy once he managed to catch him. (He of course did, lol) Jake would totally be up for this kind of stuff.

Ruby said...

hmmm I have mixed feelings about this. I'm not keen on franchises after Pirates 2 and 3 and the last Spidey (which seemed like three movies in one ) but, but , but 'swashbuckling' is a magic word for me and I love that idea! (I *heart* Errol Flynn) We need to see Jake in a frilly shirt and high boots. Swoon, revealing my fantasies here!!!

Anonymous said...

OK, I'm convinced. Handled right with his razor-sharp wit and innocence (mixed with a hint of the dark side) he definitely could pull this off. I've just had a flash of an image in my head ... a b/w picture I've seen of Jake, stripped to the waist.. doing a kung fu pose... (ooops, maybe that's from one of my dreams).

Put it in the hands of someone that won't make it 'hollywood', cliched and the CGI has got to look authentic (that's where SpiderMan got it wrong).

Another person to be considered for it could be Josh Hartnet but he lacks charisma where Jake has oooooooodles.

...... And..... he'd have to wear his hair long. Yes!!

Hi everyone! OT:Can anybody tell me, please, if your Rendition DVD has got special features, additional scenes, etc.and is it that only American DVD has extra features and European is bare-boned? I don't know where to buy it:on amazon.com or amazon.co.uk. Thanks

Anonymous said...

Zodiac I have the UK version and I think it has all the extras, deleted scenes, commentary etc, same as the US.

If you're in the UK it's packed with special features. It's got the making of ,trailers , deleted and extended scenes and a documentary. I'm still looking for the eggs :DD

Ooooch,owwwww,aaaaaaah....no I'm not doing a Meg Ryan, those ouches are because I'm sitting on the fence on this one :-)

Firstly the word "franchise" brings me out in a rash,it just says big budget and aggressive marketing at the expense of artistic merit to me. That's a sweeping statement,I know, but I'm good at those ;-)

Secondly I have to admit to having always been a bit "and the point is...?" about computer games (sorry,WDW xxx) and I got the Gyllen-giggles at the precis of the plot for "The Prince Of Persia".

Redeeming features would have to be the potential for Jake to get physical and show off his athletic prowess.:-D Atmospherically, I'm thinking of an old British advertisment for Fry's Turkish Delight - gorgeous lighting, exotic costumes, definite Laurence or Arabia feel and evocative Middle Eastern music.

Much as I know that Jake would look just drop dead gorgeous in a role like this I'm really not sure on this one - but if Jake were to pull on his diaphanous,slashed-to-the-midriff white shirt,go out there, buckle his swash and prove my doubts utterly groundless no-one would be more delighted than me!

Hi everyone! Back home after a joyous fun evening with Ruby and a non-Jaker who is still susceptible to the cause - I'm going to be giving her a Jake movie watching list :D

Thanks for the comments. I'm going to say that I still really, really love the idea of Jake doing a swashbuckler. So few actors can really pull this off - Harrison Ford is one of the few - and I think Jake can. Obviously, much depends on script but I would rather Jake do a film like this, as long as it's well written, than any number of Naileds.

Hi Anons 17:41 and 17:44 - definitely a little piece of heaven if done right. I would much rather see Jake make this his own franchise, instead of taking over from someone else in well-worn spandex and tights.

Hey TL - if Jake can use 'incredible athleticism' in a role then I'm all for it!

Hi Paul - agreed that some of us may not be the target audience on paper but I think Jake could win us round :D

Hi JoeAnn :D - was that the chasing at the start of the last Bond movie? Very exciting. That was one of the best openeings for a Bond movie I've seen in a long time. Needlesstoday, I'd love to see Jake giving that a go. I really want to see him in an all out physical action role.

Hey Ruby - did you type all that while I wasn't looking? Jake in white shirt and leather boots is a bit of a fantasy for me too. If there's a petition anywhere I could sign to get Jake to do this film I'm signing! Thanks for a great evening xx

Hi Sheba - no, no comparison between Jake and Josh Hartnett! Jake is so ready for an action role like this - and I think we are too. Hmmm, not so sure about the hair. Can we have a short-haired Prince of Persia?

Hi Zodiac - I believe (as anon 21:02 kindly says) that the UK and US editions of Zodiac are the same. I must recommend playusa.com for buying R1 discs outside the US.

There are eggs, Sheba?! Ooh, let us know where and what :D

I hope everyone's having a good evening :D How can I ever sleep with images of swashbuckling deserty Prince Jake?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Nadine! we were posting at the same time :D Just don't fight it... Jake as a 9th-century Indiana Jones is irresistible - flowing (or absent) shirt, leather boots, a sword (flying carpet maybe?), all in the spirit of 1001 Arabian Nights sounds literally fabulous.

I know the term 'franchise' can be bad but Jake could make this his own. I know I shouldn't be shallow and I should think beyond the obvious attractions of Jake in this role but, as a fan of both Jake and the Prince of Persia computer games, it culd be a treat all round. Jake in a swashbuckling role like this? It could be great!

twistedlogic said...

Hey Sheba! That's a very good point about Jake's hair being longer for this role, that's a definite plus in my book (sorry WDW)!This thing just gets better and better:D

I do know what you both mean, Ruby and Nadine, about franchises, but it's probably inevitable that Jake will get involved in something like that at some point, so it might as well be this one, rather than some silly comic book type thing where he has to wear a mask.Even if the films themselves are utter rubbish, at least we're pretty much guaranteed lots of droolworthy scenes:D

Ruby said...

"did you type all that while I wasn't looking? "

You must have been at the bar! I was wallowing in the vision you had created in my mind: Jake in thigh-high boots and an open-necked frilly shirt, buckling his swash (or was that swashing his buckle?) :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL! I have concerns about the hair length I must admit. Please not too long... I think Jake would love to have a franchise he could make his own - not inherited from any other actor and not similar to anything that's been before. This one would be original, exotic, sexy and fun. That sounds good to me! Droolworthy scenes all over the place :D

Ruby, that is a great image! Glad you got home ok and thanks for a greate evening :)

It is not the kind of film that Jake imagine the acting.

Hello!
I just wanted to tell you that I have been reading your blog for a while and I totally love it! Thank you very, very much for keeping us so well informed about Jake's news.

And regarding this post. I think it would be wonderful to see Jake playing a hero in an adventure movie. Imagine that! We could watch the movie over and over without needing Prozac afterwards. :O) LOL.

Thank you again for your amazing work.

Have a Jake day!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Welcome Andrea! Thanks so much for commenting - I am really glad you like the site - you've made my day :D

If Jake makes this film then I am moving into the cinemas!

Have a great day :)

Hi, WDW!!
There was some discussion about this on other blogs I visit, so I went to YouTube to watch some videos of "Parkour." It is really arduous! I mean REALLY. It looks dangerous, actually.

And as shallow as it sounds, my main concern has been Jake's hair.:) I think they should not mess with it too much, longer, the it is now, but not too much longer. Just Jake with is longer hair the way we've seen it before with some scruff would be fine. (sigh!)

As I think about it, this seems to be how Jake's other roles come to light. They sort of just appear on the horizon, with no formal announcement. I have had a zillion Google alerts about this role in the past two days. I would love to see Jake pick up a franchise. Jerry Bruckheimer certainly has had success with them.

I don't know why, but when I went to the Prince of Persia website, and read about it, knowing nothing before hand, I got the sense that this had a Lord of the Rings quality to it. I am also wondering if they will use artwork as it was used in movies like 300?
He will have to really go thru some rigorous training for this. It would be the most physically demanding role he's had...if this is true.

"I know I shouldn't be shallow and I should think beyond the obvious attractions of Jake in this role but..."

And the problem with being shallow is....? :D

paulh said...

I saw Josh Hartnett in "Lucky Number Slevin," and didn't get a sense of him as a candidate for an action movie.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there everyone :D

Hey Bobbyanna :D I think Parkour is extremely sexy and I know I need to see Jake do it. If anyone's gonna be shallow round here it's me! I will own up to some trepidation about the gyllenmop too - although I don't want to see another jarhead, I also don't want to see a mullet or a long head of hair on chair (especially not paired with a goatee). I'll trust the gods on this one and hope for the best.

I agree that Jake's roles can come to light like this - although some fall by the wayside. But despite the fact that this is whizzing round the net - generally with a huge amount of popularity - there are very few primary sources, quite possibly only the one. But there are also no denials.

I see Prince of Persia as being on the lines of Sinbad or Aladdin - the games are very exciting and one of the few that I've played since early days. I've also generally enjoyed the movie recreation of videogames. I'm one of those (possibly one of the few!) who really did like Angelina as Laura Croft. I like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy etc. As for 300 - absolutely loved the cinematography of that and I could see how that could be put to use in this.

The training will definitely be vigorous and if the filming is to take place in Morocco in the summer it's going to be arduous inded. That place gets hot!

Hi Narcissa :D Agreed!

Afternoon Paul :) I must own up and say that Josh Hartnett is quite probably one of my least favourite actors. Of course, the first thing I saw him in was Pearl Harbor...

Anonymous said...

Ooooo, Lord of the Rings?! You said the magic words. If you get that mix then definitely yes! A quest of epic proportions with a mix of humour, heart... oh sorry, I repeat myself. Please do it Jake.

Look, Jake would look great with long hair. If you have the Moonlight Mile DVD, go to the Making of Special Features where they interview Jake and his hair is long but parted in the middle. Go on, have a look. Beautiful, with those big, beautiful, earnest eyes shining through *deep sigh*. He is the Prince already.

Anonymous said...

I see Prince of Persia as being on the lines of Sinbad or Aladdin.

Me too, WDW! The more I hear about this, the more fun and exciting it becomes. It'll be great fun for all ages. I think Jake would be ideal. :)

Anonymous said...

Jake says he is obsessed with his hair. So are others, apparently. I know I am. No wonder! Its gorgeous.

Anonymous said...

whooops pia that's mia ^ ^ ^

Anonymous said...

To be perfectly honest Pia, I preferred his hair in Jarhead - Yes, None. :D Or it's just growing back about half inch. Nothing to get in the way of his manliness - just wash and go Jake.

With regard to Josh Hartnet, the point I was making was that he would be the typical person they would look to cast but like I said, he lacks the charisma of Jake.

The fantasy adventure is dying out and it would be great to have someone bring that genre back to popularity. I think also because it will be something so different from the other roles on his CV, you know, expand his range. I'd also like to see him play a priest/monk, a prisoner and a president (now that would be a script worth writing).

Anonymous said...

Hey Sheba, I would love to see Jake play a celibate monk NOTHING like a sexed-up celibate. I once met a charming "brother" - Richard Rohr was his name I think, who confided to an audience of studens that he was a celibate because if he wasnt he'd being doing it with everything!

way to go! tee hee hee!

Anonymous said...

sigh that's mia^

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there! Sorry I'm late this evening - I've been playing this flippin Prince of Persia game - I blame Jake... I have no coordination.

Hi Sheba :D Yes, Jake Please do it! It would be the kindest thing for us. But no - long hair on Jake is bad and on that I cannot be moved :D

Hey there Bertie - yes, I think no actor could be better for this role than Jake - he would be so sexy and his colouring and blue eyes and muscles... :P

I'm obsessed with it too Pia and so I did a post on those lines :D

I like the sound of that script, Sheba, keep em coming! I love the old fashioned Hollywood fantasy films (TLOTR less so) and I'd really like to see some life breathed into that too. I also love deserts and seeing Jake in them. And I'm sure Jake could put up with some more tangines :D

Ooh Pia - Jake playing a celibate monk? Nooo. I'll make do with the immoral congressman until we can see some dashing Persian Prince in a tent with flapping luxuriant silks. Sigh.

Anonymous said...

Oh dear WDW :-( I'm afraid I had to turn the clip off half way through. Indeed the fan who compiled it had done a great job,but as it got more melodramatic and preposterous I was losing the will to live. Methinks I have misplaced my inner child ;-)

I can quite see that Jake would look utterly gorgeous in the likely costumes for this (and out of them!),particularly if his hair were kept fairly short - but I just get the uncomfortable feeling that this has "turkey" written all over it.

I'm trying to imagine Jake reading the script for this and getting the emotional connection with the story that he's often stated has been his reason for taking a part - and I'm not seeing it. But what do I know - it wouldn't be the first time that Jake's done something totally contrary to my expectations,he's not always the easiest bloke to read - which is what probably fascinates us and keeps us trying to do just that.

As for Jake's hair, I would like it best with my fingers in it (yes Paul,or my nose ;-) ) - but that really is a total fantasy!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Negative Nadine! I think you just have to give in to it (while drinking large amounts of gin). I can see why Jake would want to do this just as I can see why I would love to see it. But yes, there's a Turkey Threat but maybe sometimes it must be an incentive to do a movie simply for the fun of being in something like this. In an ideal world, this could leave Jake with the wherewithal to then do the kind of roles we are more familiar with. Just thinking out loud :D
