Jake - 'I want the ability to swim deep or go shallow'

Jake Gyllenhaal has been busy - after last year's six months off, Jake threw himself into the movie star deepend with a vengeance - Brothers, Nailed, possibly Prince of Persia, possibly Joe Namath's biopic and hopefully a piece of Moon Project action to fit into the puzzle. The reasoning behind Jake's choice of roles is a fascinating subject, and not only for the roles he takes, but also for those he doesn't.

The disadvantage Jake may feel he's been under (whether that's relevant or not now is a different matter) is that he's not good at auditions, even though he may be called to them by directors who hold him as first choice. This was the case with Jarhead and Sam Mendes - Jake remembered (with shudders, by the sound of it): 'Then began our sado-masochistic relationship but I remember calling him, I had read with him, and I said maybe I shouldn’t read because I’m not very good in auditions. But I read and I was horrible and then I didn’t hear from him so I called him on the phone and said I was perfect for this part and would do anything to play it and he never called me back! It continued like that and then a couple of months later I got the part, but it was a long audition process…'

It seems Jake had been up against Tobey Maguire and Leo DiCaprio. However, Jake was fortunate because, as Sam said at the time: 'It's not necessarily going to be all stars and I think you may find a new generation of actors coming through.' It's worth noting that Jake had auditioned unsuccessfully for a role in Sam's earlier movie, American Beauty.

Rumours of superhero roles must be par for the course for young actors of a certain physique, because Jake's been followed by a trail of them: Spiderman rumours: 'It's kind of stupid to talk about because it's not my part, and it's Tobey's part. It's his and it always will be, and it came up when there were issues with his back and what was going on with that, and it was really flattering, but I'm really happy that he's playing the part.' Also there have been the Green Hornet, Superman and Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight.

Then there are the biopics - Jake is stil linked to football hero Joe Namath but his name has long been connected to the biopic of friend Lance Armstrong, a project now owned by Matt Damon.

But there are two roles in particular that Jake has been linked to which didn't come to pass. Firstly, there was a leading role in Bernardo Bertolucci's Dreamers, a role which, finally, went to Michael Pitt, but not before a lot of agonising on all sides. Susan Sarandon told Jake during their discussion for Interview magazine that he thought too much, to which Jake responded (in an Italian accent) that Bernardo had said much the same thing to him: 'You need to take a year off from thinking. Come have sex in my movie!' Jake went on to say that Bernardo 'has all these clauses about nudity', and, even though his parents would 'be really happy if I worked with Bertolucci. He's someone they've always respected', Jake decided against it.

Bertolucci had clearly wanted Jake for the role, having seen him in London on stage, just as Sam Mendes (Jarhead) had and just as John Madden (Proof) had: 'But then, in London, before I decided to do anything, I met Jake Gyllenhaal. I liked him very much. I saw him on stage and then it was clear that Jake would have been so tortured about showing his body. It became clear almost immediately after a few days. I know that he was one of those very meticulous actors who wants to know everything and wants explanation. Every time there was a scene that was sexy, I would see myself trying to explain [to him.] It was impossible. I don’t blame him because I would have reacted in the same way. I cannot be naked in front of a camera. So then, I thought about this kid in New York with big lips. I saw Michael Pitt in “Bully,” which was really good.'

This is what Eva Green had to say about Jake dropping out from the role: 'And then we did screen tests in London with Jake Gyllenhaal, based on the script, because he was going to play the Michael Pitt role. He had to drop out, because, I don’t know – his lawyers or his agent didn’t want him to get naked in movie. It was really bad for his ‘career’ because in America I think they’re very very puritan, and if you’re doing a scene with frontal nudity, then people will think that you’re a pornographic actor, or something. It’s really weird – I don’t really understand that… mind-set.'

Instead of Dreamers, Jake decided to do The Day After Tomorrow, to do a popular summer film that he would enjoy doing and people would go and see in their droves. And who can blame him for that? When promoting the blockbuster, Jake said: '"It felt like a different movie than I've ever done ... just in terms of scope and size," he said of the film, which he saw for the first time the day before this chat. "It blew me away," he said, a smile rising in his voice. "Not to toot my own horn or anything."'

Another role that was not to be for Jake was that of Christian in Moulin Rouge, but that in the end would be irrelevant because Jake and his rival for Moulin Rouge was Heath Ledger: 'We knew each other before we filmed this movie. We had both been on an extensive, really intense, audition process for Moulin Rouge with Baz Luhrmann. There was me and Heath and Ewan [McGregor] as the last three for that role. I feel like I was the puppy of all the three of them. I don't know what I was doing in there, but I was just amazed to be in there when we were auditioning. Heath and I started to know each other just by name, because I never saw his face—Baz never let us see each other. We'd be ushered into a room and locked in, and the other would go out and audition with someone and then ushered back in, so I heard him by name for a long time. When we were both not cast we become friends out of jealousy. From there we knew each other on and off, different times we'd see each other.'

The roles that Jake didn't take or didn't get offered have been outweighed in every sense by those he did, leaving Jake with his 'embarrassment of riches' at the end of 2005: 'But I've started to look at it this way: It's an embarrassment of riches. My birthday is right near Christmas. My mother is Jewish, so we celebrate Hanukkah. My father is Christian, so we also celebrate Christmas. All these things are celebrated at the same time and you get one present for everything, which is lame. On the other hand, it's always nice to get a present at all.'

We've heard Jake mention the inspiration of actors such as Paul Newman, Richard Burton, Sean Penn and Matt Damon, but in this same interview Jake mentions an inspiration that may have encouraged him in his latest role in Nailed: 'John Cleese is important to me. Seriously. My inspiration comes from odd places, I guess, different than the roles I play.'

Jake goes on to say: 'I was at a photo shoot the other day... and the guy told me, 'Oh, you should be in more mainstream work.' I was thinking, wait a minute: I don't want to float. I want to dive off the boat. I want to get in the water. I want the ability to swim deep or go shallow. The water is the mainstream but there are different depths. And definitely I don't want to float above it all.'

In this interview, Jake revealed that he was pleased not only about how he surprised himself with Jack Twist, but also by the achievement of Heath Ledger in the role of Ennis: 'Heath really delivered. I don't think people expect it. And I love actors surprising people.' As for himself: 'I tend to push and prod and move toward progression. I want to push people into telling the truth or saying the truth. Saying what they feel. That's just how I work and how I try to live.'

James Brolin and Kirstie Ally take the plunge

James Caan may have failed the cookie challenge as Speaker of the House but now it's the chance of James Brolin to choke and cough in the right order. Kirstie Ally 'in her first feature role since 2002, will play a veterinarian who fails to remove a nail from the head of her niece (Jessica Biel).' One has to wonder if a vet should be the first port of call when one has a nail stuck in the head, aunt or no aunt.

Hi WDW et al! Hope everyone is well. This hasnt got anything much to do with the post, which was as fascinating as ever but I thought y'all might like to hear about a bit of a Jake-y dream I had last night. I think only Brits will get this! You know those Orange ads you get before a film about mobiles ruining movies?! Well I dreamt of Jake being in one. It was mostly riffing on Brokeback and how they wouldnt have had so much pain and anguish if they'd had mobiles to keep in touch and send photos etc. Ended with that dark haired bloke who is the boss in the ads saying 'I wish I knew how to quit you', was all very real! Maybe I should suggest it to the writers though I guess post-Heath, Jake is unlikely to make fun of BBM :o(

Love to all.

LJF mostly just a lurker these days

Hey LJF! - it's been yonks - great to see you and may I ask - how are the Gunners doing? I get out of touch without you. So no more just lurking, OK?!

I love those Orange ads, Jake would be fab in one of them and he'd be cheeky :D I think Jake likes to make fun of himself so he'd be up for it.

I hope we'll get to see you soon :D

great post!! I love the picture with Jake and Lance. I dont know what he's wearing but I like it :)

Hey Nicole :D Noone - and I repeat noone - does the spandex look quite like Jake! I'm glad you enjoyed the post, I enjoyed doing it :)

Brilliant post, WDW! I love rediscovering all the old interviews, even if some of them do make me a bit misty eyed now:(
I think I need some BBM and/or Jarhead right now.

Is it really wrong of me to wish that Jake had done Dreamers instead of TDAT? Not just for the obvious reason, it just sounds like more my cup of tea. Although I must admit I am slowly but surely warming (no pun intended!) to TDAT. I have to say I thought Eva Green's comments about actors who get naked being seen as porn stars a bit odd. Your old mate Sarsy gets naked and full frontal in Kinsey and I doubt anyone thinks of him as some sort of porn star. Something must have got lost in translation there.

*waves to LJF* The Gunners are ending the season with a bit of a whimper rather than a bang unfortunately, but we'll be back;)

Hi TL! I was in the mood for a lookback and it's put me in such a good mood to think about the last two years :D

I have to say that, while Jake's nudity obviously would be a real selling point for Dreamers for me, I'm still glad he didn't do it. If Jake didn't feel comfortable then I'm pleased he spent those months having fun on TDAT instead. We all need to have fun when we're young (and older) and I compare Jake's experience on TDAT with mine on an archaeological site in Germany which I did at the same age - absolute blast (a glass of schnapps at 7am will never go unappreciated)!

Eva Green's comments say a lot about her and not much about Jake.
As for Sarsy (my mate, as you say), he's always steered an experimental course and he's never been judged in such a way. (*makes mental note to get hold of Kinsey*).

I'm sorry about the Gunners' whimper - but it is a lot better than Oxford Utd's bleat...

Hi Guys, lovely day (I know, Brits talking about the weather again but hey, we get it when we can :D) Oh, and about the Gunners - I have had a major crush on Thierry Henri - he's so kissable. I saw him in a recent interview where he was almost in tears talking about Arsenal as one of his major loves. I believe he's single now so if me and Jake don't work out and he really wants Reese, I won't stand in the way of true love - I'll just try with Thierry VaVaVoom Henri xxxxxxxxxx :D

I think Eva's comments were lamenting how Hollywood bigwigs look unfavourably on those brave actors who take these risks with their careers for 'creative' endeavours and that nudity was thought to be one of them. It seems that she wanted Jake to come be 'creative' with her but that agents thought it would wreck his career. I've seen Michael in a few other things but nothing significant that stands out. I remember seeing Peter starkers and thought absolutely nothing of it (strange that) as if it were totally natural.

I can say though that seeing Jake totally naked would absolutely ruin it for me. I know Jarhead was the closest he's come to it but some things should be left to the imagination (like in Bubble Boy - was it real? LOL)

My favourite quote of all Jakeisms is:
"disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed"

which he has done so incredibly well for me in most of his movies.

"Your old mate Sarsy gets naked and full frontal in Kinsey and I doubt anyone thinks of him as some sort of porn star." {Twisted Logic]

Somewhere there's an alternate universe where people would rather see Peter Sarsgaard naked than Jake. We aren't in that universe :-).

The tendency to think too much is passed down from fathers to sons in my family, and apparently in jake's family as well. :-) It is not curable, but at least it's benign.

twistedlogic said...

Oh, WDw, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Jake should have to make films he doesn't want to do just to keep me happy.I'm not saying he SHOULD have done it and not done TDAT, it's just that personally Dreamers would have appealed to me more. But of course I respect his decision not to do it and if he felt it was right for him to do TDAT then good for him for doing it.It's his career after all, and let's face it so far he's showed very good judgement in picking the roles he has.

Have you not seen Kinsey yet? I found it in the HMV sale for £3 a couple of months ago:D You have to try and get hold of it, if only for the scene where Sarsy gets hold of Kinsey;) Seriously, ignore my slashy little mind talking, it's a really good film, great performances all round.

Hey Sheba! I saw Thierry Henry first, so hands off!!!!

sheba said...

Yeah, but you didn't stake your claim - I claim him in on behalf of my people in the Sheba Quadrant! (currently with a population of 1 ;D)

Don't you just hate it when these really quality films go for a measley £3? I remember seeing a Highway video going for 50p in Wilkinsons.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Sheba :D Just invite us to the wedding, OK?! I can understand Eva's upset at not being able to act opposite a nude Jake - she may have signed on for this very reason ;D I fear that whether seeing Jake totally naked would ruin it for me may be an academic point. Although, seriously, I don't expect this from an actor I appreciate and many times I really wish they wouldn't.

Hi Paul - I could tolerate Peter and Jake naked in a movie, but it'd be tough. Thinking too much is something many of us could be accused of, I suppose it depends what you're thinking of.

Hey TL, I'm afraid to say I've still not seen Kinsey - My digital recorder is broken unfortunately. I have seen some scenes - especially 'those' scenes - and I am so keen to see the rest of it. I've become such a big fan of Peter's.

Sheba - that's so true. I have argued with sellers at car boot sales for selling things too cheap and I picked Zodiacs from off the floor in HMV as I hated seeing them stockpiled lik that!

Thanks for the post! just what I need after struggling with my new oven... but I don't have time, so this is going to be quick.

I am happy that he didn't do Moulin Rouge (or didn't get picked) - man, I hate that movie!!!!!!! *ok ok... i will calm down*

"Dreamers" would be an experience though... I always think that every actor who likes their craft should work with Bertolucci and Woody Allen once in their career. Just for the experience.

I thought Michael Pitt was good there - btw, he was recently in "Funny Games" (US) (produced by Naomi Watts) and he has some chilling performance there.

back to Jake... I am kind of dreading I'll soon be struggling with his film choices, I really hope he would keep his indie roots even when he does blockbusters, cos honestly, there's only so many Buckheimer blockbusters or TDAT films I can stomach :P

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Winterbird :D New oven eh? Good luck with that (just watch the cooking times, it'll probably frazzle a pizza in 5 minutes).

I do like Moulin Rouge but more for its soundtrack than the film - love to have an album of Jake singing at me).

It was funny when I was at Rome - Michael Pitt's film was supposed to be the one after Rendition but he failed to show due to flight troubles (must've been flying BA) and it made me think of Dreamers.

I tend to think of Jake's roles moving in cycles and that the odd Roland-type movie will be mixed in with a whole load of gems.

twistedlogic said...

Sheba, I staked my claim to TH years ago, when I realised it was unlikely that I'd be Freddie Ljungberg's type;) I would allow Freddie to stake a claim to TH though, if he thought he had a chance (god, i'm such a slash tart!)

As someone who's permanently skint, I'm always happy to see movies, CDs, books, anything going cheap. I'm sure all these HW types aren't going to starve ;)

As for Jake being naked, I don't really mind either way. I'm sure he would never do it if it was gratuitous, so I don't think it would spoil anything for me,but I do agree that it can often be better to leave things to the imagination:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL - I'll just make humming noises while you and Sheba discuss the Gunners :D

It is definitely true that our imagination is very happy to be kept so occupied ...

sheba said...

OK, OK, back to Jake. Hey WDW, funny that picking Jake's films off the floor or stacking it correctly (I thought I was alone eek!)

Any 'legitimate' excuse to get Jake semi-nekkid in spandex eh.. Do y'all think Jake is swimming deep or going shallow at the moment in his choices?

paulh said...

I didn't exactly hate "Moulin Rouge," but I didn't think it accomplished as much as it could have. Ewan McGregor has a nice, pleasant voice which he doesn't know how to use to best advantage. Nicole Kidman (and, to a lesser extent, Jim Broadbest) carried the show's singing duties on her shoulders. She shouldn't have had to. Jake and Heath both had nice voices. Sorry, I don't know why they cast Ewan, though I like him a lot.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Sheba :D Yep, Jake DVDs can not stay on the floor - this can not be tolerated and if they offer a Jake movie for £3 I expect you all to argue and insist on paying at least a fiver, ok? A tenner would be better...

My feeling is that Jake is currently testing the temperature of the water, which means that the results could be unexpected and hopefully a pleasure :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul :D I really liked Ewan's voice myself and I liked him in the role. I wasn't so sure about Nicole! Jim Broadbent is astonishing. At least we can agree on that one :D

twistedlogic said...

Oops, sorry about the football(or rather footballers!) talk WDW :( You know me, never know when to keep my mouth shut;)

There's never a dull moment in my imagination where Jake's concerned. But seriously, about the nudity thing, in the screenplay for BBM Jack was supposed to be naked in SNIT, with his shirt draped over his lap. I don't know why it was changed, but personally I'm glad it was. Jack in the jeans is perfect ,so beautiful and sexy and I think it works much better.

Shallow or deep, who knows, but Wet Jake is always good:D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL :D You're right about the SNIT scene - I remember wondering why they'd changed it but I think the movie version is just perfect :)

sheba said...

I agree, Jim Broadbent was a surprise. Ewan, who I admire, was a little bland.

WOW, I didn't know that TL. Definitely more pleasing with the jeans on. Phew... is it getting hot in here or is it me?

WDW, you mean like putting your elbow in the bath water? He probably needs to jump in now man... he did it with BBM, it's been 3 years now... he's a good, strong swimmer. I long to be disturbed again, I long to be comforted again. I know he can't reproduce the same feelings but the diversity with DD, BB, TGG, Highway, OS etc... Nailed should be the deep end I guess but again - political films don't do so well at the box office but they are the ones to watch again and again many years later.

I think if Heath had got the role he would have stolen it completely. He had a wonderful singing voice which I heard recently in '10 Things...' and even the humming in BBM was resonant.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I've never heard Heath sing - I would like to.

I think Nailed could be the deep end - and maybe Brothers. Difficult to say as we know so little about that one. I've always thought of Jake's career in the longterm and know that there'll be some wonderful surprised along the way :D

Yes! I agree with Berbardi B - Jake needs to stop thinking and take a year off having sex with me!

Paul, maybe you didnt actually hate "Moulin Rouge", but I did, and am SO glad neither Jake nor Heath were in it.

I would like to be teased by Jake's (admitedly tra la la boom-te-ay style modesty) the rest of my life! - and really, feeling protective of our beautiful man, and anxious enuff having him being more and more a product for display while checking out at Stop and Shop - would not want to see his privates all over the internet.

O but life with Jake is difficult!

Off to watch some BBM now, to soothe my nerves before bedtime. Nite nite (((WDW))) and everyone xx

Good late evening all,

Since you all where discussing Heath's singing I thought I would share my experience from today.

I watched Lords of Dogtown for the first time. Loved it! At the end of the movie when he was singing along with "Maggie Mae" I lost it. I had to make up some excuse and leave the room. I went into the bathroom and cried. It was like it all came crashing back at once. It was such a strange moment for me. I felt so silly hiding in the bathroom crying for someone I didn't know.

It is kind of strange that you guys where talking about him singing. Maybe I have esp? :)

Thanks for listening.

Good night.

Morning from NYC WDW:)

This is such a lovely post, you really have the knack. I could read you all day long.

I went over to your encyclopedia immediately and I'll probably read all about Jake on that site by next year. I'd only read a small portion of the Jake/Susan interview, so thanks for the pleasure. I could never have found it:)
Swimming deep, eh? And he's a thinker too well, that's our Jakey.
American producers and audiences sometimes typecast actors after they see them in movies that involve nudity, but not so much anymore.
Jake wouldn't have that problem, but I think I'm glad he said NO to this project, and I'm a Bertolucci fan.
Jake's a peach. TY again for this wonderful post.
Now on to Jake dreamland...not yet:)
xoxoxo
TY again

Morning everyone and another hot and sunny day :D I actually saw someone yesterday walking around a meerkat on a lead - I kid you not...

(((Bird Girl))) It's not silly at all, moments hit and there's nothing you can do about it. I'm expecting I'm Not There from PlayUSA today or tomorrow and I know that'll be difficult and yet I long to see it again too. I've not seen Dogtown. Have a good day today x

Morning Sass in NYC - what are you doing up at this time! I'm so glad you enjoyed the post, I really do like doing features like this. Jake's defeated the typecast net and I'm very pleased about that.

Have a wonderful day everyone :D

Hi WDW, you know I'm logging all your visions, don't you? You'll be a nu-medieval mystic before I'm finished :) Hmmm, pantomime horse, meerkat ...

I'm sorry all you Gunners fans but this Chelsea fan staked a claim to Thierry years ago :D What a gorgeous man.

I kind of get what Eva Green meant, I think young American actors (leading men) are more constrained in what they can do. Someone like Peter S. seems to be able to do what he wants because he occupies that interesting territory of possible leading man/possible character actor. You need to see Kinsey, WDW - what about watching it in your pc?

Add me to the non-Moulin Rouge people. It spawned an annoying genre too. I don't really get Ewan's appeal though.

HELLO and big hugs to LJF xx

Morning everyone :)
Thank you so much WDW for this post, it's amazing how many things about Jake I discover every time thanks to your posts :D
I've absolutely loved Susan Sarandon's interview! That was hilarious :D I can't imagine my reaction if entering a ladies room I found Jake standing there ;D like "errmm sorry...errm is it the ladies room or have I entered another..universe?! What a gorgeous one btw.."
Well anyway, Susan's great! And Jake's so smart and profound, I always love his answers :) and I'd have loved hearing him speaking english with the italian accent ;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Nouskie :D I'm making sure I catalogue things for you - it's an odd world out there!

I've always thought of Peter as a liberated actorm if yu know what I mean, because he can do anything and does it superbly. Problem is, he's been in so much that I have missed quite a few. I must see Kinsey...

Ewan appeals to the biker in me :D

Morning Good Girl! That is a fab interview - one of my favourites. Encountering Jake when walking into the ladies would be a shock all right. I love to hear Jake talk in accents - I'm holding out for an English one :D

Xenia said...

Hi WDW and everyone! Hope you all are having a good day.:)

Although I'd have loved seeing Jake in something 'Italian' (not to mention hearing him speaking Italian or in an Italian accent as Sonia said before ;))I've never been too keen on 'The Dreamers': too much morbidness, and what for? To better picture the 60s age? Are you sure, Bernardo?

As for Eva Green, Bertulucci says it well, nudity and the uneasiness towards showing nudity is not just an American issue, is personal, and universal...

Ah I absolutely love the interview with Susan Sarandon, these two have a wonderful connection, let's hope they will do another movie together! :)

Hi sweetpeeps! Its still Thursday, gee Ive done a week's work, already, let it be Friday. OK not yet.

Susan Sarandon I love, saw her in Romance and Cigarettes last night, very funny flic, with other favorites such as Chris Walken. Poor reviews, but I lov'd it.

There's an endless and annoying interview in May GQ (pix and review on line) with Robert Downey Jr., but it made me think about stresses of being in the public eye and how Jake has handled this. Interested me that an actor can be as antic and creative when not "on something" (other than algae smoothies etc) Maybe even more so -but I really dont want to think about this.

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hi WDW! I was too tied up in other stuff to get over here last night, but I'm glad to be able to dive into the depths of this post now,to continue Jake's watery metaphor. Immersing yourself in some of these interviews from the filing cabinet in the back of your mind is great fun :-)

You really must see "Kinsey" WDW,an excellent film with the magnificent Liam Neeson in the title role and Peter is just wonderful in it,not to mention really beautiful. Admire his courage in going full-frontal but I'm glad Jake hasn't,I'm in the "best to keep a little mystery" camp and let's face it, no bloke's wedding tackle in its "disinterested" state is exactly a work of art,is it?!

Like Winterbird and others,I'm really glad that neither Heath or Jake got "Moulin Rouge" - the clips I've seen were dire,Nicole and Ewan notwithstanding. Also like Winterbird,I'm feeling apprehensive about some of Jake's potential choices for upcoming roles, not that I've got much option other than to go with his judgement(sound thus far) and hope for the best.

I'm slowly completing my Heath back catalogue, despite the fact that some still remain in the cellophane shrink-wrap because I'm scared to watch them. Believe me,Birdgirl, you're not the only one still having rushes of Heath-grief which come out of nowhere and knock you for six. Had a bloody good sob for him just last week. I'm so tempted to look at the "10 THings..." clip Sheba linked to,but don't know if I dare.
The reminder of Jake being a potential for Harvey Dent in TDK gave me a little shiver - would he have seen any warning signs if he'd been around Heath when he was summoning up "The Joker"? Best not to think about it....

Hi to Anouska! Hope we'll still be buddies after this weekend and Moscow as I'm a latent Man Utd fan ;-) Sure we will!

TL,thanks for that precious nugget of information about the SNIT, I didn't know that change was made but I definitely think Jake/Jack having his jeans on was the right decision. How perfect and poignant is that beautiful, beautiful scene....*sigh*

I think someone was pondering whether Jake might still be a possibility for Robin in the third Batman movie. The catch was that he was thought to be too old, which I disagree with.

Hi everyone - got home with a fine bit of sunburn from my lunchtime walk through the meadows :D Could hardly move without tripping over the smooching couples...

Hi Xenia :D I did like The Last Emperor but I've never been much of a fan of films about the 60s - I'm Not There being a huge exception and I'm sure An Education will be too. That's one of my fave interviews, the one with Susan :D

Hey Pia! I'll have a look at that interview with my mate RDJ. Interesting the ways we all develop do deal with it all - I'm glad I can do it in private.

Whatta comment Nadine :D Like you, I have copies of a couple of Heath's films still in the plastic and unopened as I don't know the best conditions in which to watch them. My copy of I'm Not There arrived today so do I watch it tonight? It's got documentaries as well. I saw it the Sunday before Heath died and he was marvellous in it and the film really preoccupied me - so will it mean less or more now? I hope more.

Hi Paul! I'm with Nadine on this one, I'm afraid. The idea of Jake as Robin is just horrifying :)

Ey up Nouskie :D I saw no strange visions on my way home today... very disappointing.

Nadine and Anouska, I am a Liverpool fan (by birth, cos my father is an ardent Liverpool fan), so logically, I should want Man U to win to take revenge on Chelsea, but I also like Ballack... so, heehee I guess I just want to see a good game :)

About Jake's future film projects... I might be whining, but you know I am going to fight for ticket to see PoP or TDAT 2 when it actually happens... what can I say? :P

O gawd is it still Thursday? Cant we pretend its Friday? Declare a "wedding tackle appreciation" day or something.

Paul, Robin was a teen - Jake is a wee bit long in the tooth by now.

Heath singing I Love You Baby from Ten Things I Hate About You is a video I watch often, those long legs, that exquisite smile. I love loving him so much: he is such a gift! I have Im Not There coming soon from Amazon.com - (along with weightwatchers cookbook haha) - Netflix announced "a long wait" which I cannot sustain.

Singin' today songs from West Side Story: when Im a Jet Im a Jet all the way from my first cigarette to my last dyin' day. . . "

Also "nothin's gonna change my world . . . "

Gee whiz WDW yesterday's column was a spring tonic. I do like the direction in which you're goin'

Hi Winterbird - ooh do I have t decide between Man U and Chelsea? I uppose it would have to be Man U.. sorry, Anouska!

I also have to agree with you as far as Jake's future roles go - while I hope for the best, I'd see and enjoy Jake in anything. But PoP please!

Hi Pia :D I wish it were Friday too. This has been a short week in the UK but it's not been an easy one for me either. But you sound like the songs of Jake and Heath are carrying you through :) I'm so glad, Pia, that you liked the post :D

I wasn't saying that Jake *should* be Robin, only that the rules could be loosened enough to let him be if the filmmakers want him to be Robin. They probably don't, but anyway....
