A student of Tibetan Buddhism - expect the unexpected

The Dalai Lama has been in town today, meaning lots of barricades, police horses and more protesting Buddhist monks than you expect to see in one lunchtime - not to mention all the tourists taking photographs of said protesting Buddhist monks. And right on the spot where Peter Sarsgaard was filming An Education the other week as well. However, all hope that something peaceful and good would result from my fleeting glimpse of the Dalai Lama being ushered into the Sheldonian Theatre was dispelled in shortshrift when, ten minutes later, round the corner, I was run over by a royal mail delivery van. Fortunately, I was ok and, unfortunately, so was the van.

This unusual lunchtime - unusual even for this town - inspired me to quote from my favourite onetime student of Tibetan Buddhism, Jake Gyllenhaal himself, whom, I believe, may have more luck in seeing the Dalai Lama without risk of damage by the postal services.

As mentioned here before, Jake and Maggie studied under Professor Thurman at Columbia University, and here Jake recalls how he got signed up for the course: '"The first class I took was Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism," he says, "My sister and I took that together; she was a senior when I was a freshman. And the first thing Professor Thurman says is 'All freshmen, out.' Maggie grabs my arm and says, 'Stay.' I whisper, 'He said freshmen out!' She's like, 'Yeah, yeah.'...So then he says, 'Sophomores out.' Then, 'All Juniors not majoring in Eastern religion, out.' And by now, I'm saying to Maggie, 'I've got to go!' She just kept telling me to stay."

"Eventually, he got through seniors-and she said, 'Now go up and talk to the TA. Beg him.' So I went up and begged and the guy said, 'Of course, no problem. The other people were just stupid and they left.' So we took that class, and it was wonderful. Maggie just knew. She's tough!...We're both pretty tough."'

Jake and the Dalai Lama have appeared together in print - in Radar Magazine's list of the top 100 overrated. Jake was no. 27, just two places behind the Dalai Lama at no. 25. I remember us having fun with the list at the time, and I am still bemused that cupcakes and going to Mars both featured in the top ten. Is it possible to overrate going to Mars? And do pandas, despite their limitations, really deserve the no. 13 spot?

It goes without saying that there's no argument with the top spot. And talking of Victoria Beckham - next Monday, Maggie Gyllenhaal will be sharing a stage with the WAG at the next event in the whirlwind that is the NYC social calendar. Maggie, Mrs Beckham and Eva Mendes will be co-presenting the Womenswear Designer of the Year award at the Council of Fashion Designer's America awards, 'with each of the women expected to wear a nominated designer. Posh (pictured) will don Marc Jacobs (she currently stars in the designer's ad campaign - click now to see the pics), Eva Mendes the face of Calvin Klein will wear (you guessed it) Calvin Klein in honour of Creative Director Francisco Costa who is also nominated, while Gyllenhaal will sport Proenza Schouler.'

Meanwhile, the saga that is called Nailed continues its ups and downs - this time, for a change, it's an up. Variety has confirmed that Nailed did go back to work yesterday (Thursday), despite its bouncing cheques, and gave some more background information. For the time being at least, SAG seems satisfied by the assurances concerning Nailed and other projects in the pipeline. Fingers crossed - although they've been crossed so long, they're starting to ache. That's even without the bash, courtesy of Royal Mail.

Or is that one lifetime? I had forgotten about all of the to-do associated with such a visit, but what a wonderful thing to see him. I'm so sorry to hear about your "encounter" with the postal van, but I love the pic you chose of Jake. Hopefully you are ok! :* Nice post today, everything his happening at Oxford lately!

WDW, I hope you're not down on "Make way for duckings," or the piano duel between Daffy Duck and Donald Duck" in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." Please say it's sometimes okay for ducks to be in movies. :-)

I agree that Maggie is tough. Some people don't like tough actresses, as Susan Sarandom knows too well.

I expect that Buddhists (ebven Buddhist monks) have just as hard a time being peaceful as members of any other group. We're all human, and we all have frailties. There's an up side to this, as some of the most successful movies and plays and novels depend on people making the wrong decisions and following the wrong advice. :-(

Your illustrations are so clever and funny WDW! Also the post of interconnections. You surely are attracting alot of sprititual energy around your person, what next?

Paul said, "We're all human, and we all have frailties."

My goodness, that's exactly what my shrink said to me today, in part of our ongoing conversation about Jake.

Syncronicity abounds, or else, we're all going global. And pretty soon "we off on the road to Morocco where we're going why we're going how can we be sure. . ."

Although as Bob Hope sings, "this camel is hard on the spine. . ."

Stupid comment today but I am overwhelmed by WDW's wit - Nadine, give it shot -

Hi there! Just got back from my treat of a pub dinner in the countryside :D

Hi Bertie :D I tell you, Oxford is so strange, it was definitely in one lunchtime! I was surprised to see so many monks protesting but it was very peaceful and there were plenty of people cheering as well. What a day, just glad to be alive still to tell the tale :)

Hi Paul! I love ducks and so yes, there's always room for ducks in a movie (love Daffy Duck....). Gotta be the right type of duck - my favourite duck in a movie was the standy-up duck in Babe :)

The Buddhist monks today were vocal but all very peaceful and keen to explain to everyone why they were there. Many of them were also taking pics of the architecture like the other tourists. And the police were jokey too.

Hey Pia! So glad you liked the post and the pics - and I could do with the spiritual energy... Love the comment :D Relaxing now with a GnT.

My dear WDW, I hope I don't have to add the Dalai Lama to your list of apparitions?

Only kidding ;)

Lovely post today *

Hi Nouskie *) You never know what - or whom - is round the corner! I'm kind of giving up being surprised! Glad you liked the post :)

Wow, (((WDW))), glad you are okay and weren't hurt by the mail truck. Oy, that's crazy. But I have to say I think the wonderful Dalai Lama (and the Monks) was looking out for you that you are okay. :) Glad you had a nice evening at the Pub. :D

Another excellent post! Love Jake the Buddhist. That is a great story of him and Maggie taking Thurman's class.

Keeping all good thoughts/vibes that Nailed continues and finishes without any more problems.

Happy Friday everyone! Another perfect weather day here. Am off to enjoy it some more. Will be seeing the "Sex and the City" movie this weekend...can't wait!

xoxo

A lovely post tonight,WDW, all the more so because, thankfully, you were sufficiently alive and well to post it after your altercation with the post van!You were almost despatched by the Royal Mail! Well we've always said you're first class!(Sorry Pia,that's the best I can do! ;-) ).

Loved the story of Jake and Maggie toughing it out in Professor Thurman's Buddhism class. You don't fool us (((Jake))),tough on the outside but with a very soft centre.Excellent choice of pics of our First Class Male here WDW!

And to make up for my feeble efforts in the wit department, may I cater for your penchant for ducks, WDW, with a sweet story from a local paper courtesy, of my Mom earlier today.

In the nearby city where I went to senior school a duck decided to build its nest over the door of a city centre pub. Yesterday the Mommy duck decided it was time to teach her babies to swim and was on the pavement, quacking fit to bust, trying to encourage her brood to make the hazardous jump to the pavement below.

A crowd began to gather when it became apparent what was happening, the traffic was stopped, there was much trepidation lest the poor wee things should jump after Mum and hurt themselves. With a stroke of genius a lady opened and upturned her brolly (umbrella for non-Brits)and all but one of the ducklings jumped and were caught safely in the brolly's folds! The last little scaredy duckling who could not be persuaded to jump was then lifted from the nest by another hero of the hour who turned up in the nick of time with a ladder.

Without a backward glance,Mommy Duck, followed by a string of babies, waddled off to the pool by the Cathedral, several hundred yards away, oblivious to the disruption they had left in their wake! It's stories like that which make me proud to be British! :-)

Serendipitous moments seems to be happening to just you WDW - how else could you bring these invaluable gems back to us. Now, now Jake ... there's no need to laugh your @$$ off at WDW's misfortune :DDD So glad your safe and well to tell us the tale.

Can you just imagine Jake and Maggie in class together - hope the experience was 'one for their history books'. I hope one day when Jake's on a break from filming he goes back and finishes his degree and earns it properly.. Reese too.

I hope to see a lot more of Maggie in the next few months having a great time. The posters and publicity is everywhere for TDK and my little one remarked 'oh, there's Maggie's name - is she in it too with Heath?'. I don't know what the rating is but I'll have a hard time explaining why he can't see it yet. Hopefully its a 12A.

Thanks for the news on Nailed... see what a little foot stomping can do! ;D I'm not holding my breath ...'cos I would die. I'm not crossing my fingers 'cos they'll cramp up. Instead, I'll whistle until I hear 'close the gate'.

Loved the ducks story.. I thought it was going to end in duck homicide but love happy endings.

OMG, WDW! there's never a dull moment with you, is there? Seriously, I'm just glad you're ok:) I've got a huge downer on Royal Mail too atm cos they still haven't delivered my copy of INT (I realise this is nowhere near as serious as what happened to you, but still...)

I remember that Overrated list and the laughs we had about it, particularly about the pandas :D Funny how the whole degrees of separation thing works(and you're a genius for joining the dots like that). I never thought I'd see the day when Maggie would be sharing any kind of event with Victoria bloody Beckham of all people *shudder* I don't know what's up with Maggie lately. Strange days indeed...

At least it sounds like Jake is back at his day job. I hope they can see it through to the end now without any further dramas:)

Hey Nadine! That story about the ducks is soooo sweet :)

Speaking of interconnections...

I saw the new "Sex and the City" movie today. Jennifer Hudson played Carrie's assistant. I think we all know how Ms Hudson connects to Jake. ;-)

Good morning everyone!!

Sorry I missed you all last night - it was some day and I flaked out... But bright and shiny today. And a beautiful sunny day. Good to see you all!

Thanks so much Get Real :D I hope that while Jake works away on Nailed through the weekend, you enjoy Sex and the City - tell me if it's worth seeing after because I still haven't made my mind up on that one. Enjoy your sunshine :D

Nadine! You outdid yourself on that one! Love the despatched thing. And I love a happy duck story - ducks being quite possibly my second favourite animal after penguins - especially the type of duck that stands tall. Speaking of bird rescues though, Mr WDW rescued a baby bluetit this week that got trapped and cats were all around it. He borrowed a ladder and got it back in its nest and all was well.

Hi Sheba :D I wonder if Jake behaved in class. I like to think that he'd have been one of the naughty kids with me at the back. TDK is so, so close now after such a long wait. The posters will be up soon and we'll be ready to go. Love the comparison of Jake to a minstrel - how about a Rolo chocolate?

Morning TL :D Now I really hate the PO - they've not delivered your INT? Not good... It should only take three days. That panda thing was great - I never realised there were such passionate panda fans amongst the Jakers :) And yes, Maggie on stage with Mrs Beckham - not something I ever hoped to see.

Hi Paul! I didn't know Ms Hudson was in SATC.

Morning Pia :D

Good luck to Nailed over the weekend - deep breath, crossed fingers, nervous twitch :D

Have a great Saturday - I have a long drive ahead of me but will be around to chat here later.

I loved the duck in "Babe" a lot, WDW. We may be on the same wavelength after all. ;-)

Alas, I have a tragic background regarding ducks: my aunt died when I was 11, and the whole family went to her farm in Michigan for the funeral. A younger cousin and I were given ducklings. I saw a pail and assumed it contained water, so I put my duckling in the "water," which turned out to be kerosene. The duck died. If God turns out to be a duck, I am going straight to Hell. :-(

I never saw "Sex and the City" when it was a television series. Judging from the way men get treated in the film, it can't have been very popular with the guy viewers. This may help explain the low grades that viewers give it at imdb.com

I wonder if your shrink knows mine, Pia. ;-)

WDW, when you mentioned "Inner Revolution" some time ago, I actually bought it. I'm reading it now. I also bought "Farm Boys" and I've read it already.

" never saw "Sex and the City" when it was a television series. Judging from the way men get treated in the film, it can't have been very popular with the guy viewers."

Hey, Paul, one guy viewer, Anthony Lane of New Yorker, is having a hissy fit. Calls it: The Liar, the Bitch, and the Wardrobe.

I loved the TV series but found none of the men especially attractive. Though I didnt think they were treated that badly.

Sad story about the duckling - an innocent deed gone wrong! Such actions haunt us as adults.

Thunder rain and hail today. Hope everybody's gotta a place to hide.

paulh said...

I love Anthony Lane's new name for SATC :-)

I tend to think that the men characters in the series/film are portrayed as relatively unattractive for a reason. If they had much depth, they couldn't be sex objects for the women characters, could they? ;-)

Anonymous said...

Well I guess the point was to show women in a relative position of power, whereas if one a the guys was Jake, all bets would be off. . .

Anonymous said...

p.s. although maybe you're right, Paul. Even the divine Baryshnikov was portrayed to be aging, egotistical, manipulative and not worth the trouble.

Maybe they coulda done a job on our Jacobo, too! Verrrry interesting!

pps quote from todays NYT re SATC "My favorite line that I always remember is ‘Hello, lover,’ when Carrie’s looking at the shoes."

This is SO JAKE!

Hi there :-) In a world with no net but the trusty phone. Been watching all the Zodiac promo interviews. I've also been enjoying the chat Pia and Paul - thanks!

I hope everyone's having a great Saturday :-)

hey Zodiac! That is great about the books. Do let me know what you think of them. I thoroughly enjoyed my reread of Catcher in the Rye.

Back home tomorrow :-)

Hey WDW! Glad to hear you had a safe journey(I take it you didn't pass any Royal Mail vans on the motorway;)). Hope everyone's having a good weekend.

Just thought I'd mention, for those of us in the UK, the current issue of Empire mags has two diferrent Batman covers, one is Christian Bale and the other, of course, is our much loved and missed Heath, as the Joker. I din't have time to buy a copy today, so I don't know what's inside, but it's got to be worth the money just for the cover.I'm getting both nervous and excited as TDK draws nearer. I wish I had INT:( *sigh*

I think I need to go and find some happy Jake vids now:)

Four Feathers fairly foolish but Heath lovely. Never had heard of this version - I guess it's about the fifth remake of the story.

Guess everybody's sleeping, I should be, too.

Good morning one and all! And I'm back Down South having enjoyed some empty roads wishing I was in one of those classic sportscars which are everywhere today - a big show somewhere. My mother was a Jaketrooper - watching the Zodiac promotion interviews, TDAT and SNL as well as giving me a whole load of Jake clippings she's been saving for me :D When I go and visit, it's not just me she gets!

So sorry I missed you all last night - we do get out of sink Spooky RL twin when I'm on the road :D But should be back to normal now. Thanks very much for the news about Empire, I'll look for that today - and thanks Narcissa for the link.

Morning Pia :D There was a sumptuous TV serial of the Four Feathers story a couple of decades ago and I find I'm stuck on that but I do like Heath in a red uniform :)

Hope everyone's having a great Sunday!

[Twisted Logic]

I had a happy Jake dream last night. I dreamed that I was renting part of a house for the vacation, and Jake and Maggie had rented another part of it. They were telling me about their younger brother and sisters (two sets of female twins). So, all told, there were 7 Gyllenhaal siblings.

Jake seemed in a receptive mood, so I gave him my suggestion about
enlisting his brother and sisters in writing a guidebook to the best coffee shops and juice bars worldwide. :-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! Great dream - and Jake would definitely be qualified to write such a book, with or without the help of a whole load of siblings. I had a dream last week that I was at a baseball game with Jake and in a break he did a cooking exhibition on the pitch. It went down evry well :D

Tibet has been china's territory for thousands of years, Dalai Lama is not a great man caring for human rights,he just wants to separate his own country, because the government deprived of his privilege as a slaveholder, now the real happy people is the ordinary people living in Tibet because they won't be oppressed by Dalai Lama's serfs system anymore. Why don't you guys come to Tibet to see what the life is like there? The common people living there are happy about their life, only the used slave owner aren't happy about government.China does have a lot of problems, but Tibet is and always will be a part of China, we'll never let it separated from our coutry!!Sorry to post something having nothing to do with Jake.I just can't help myself to say something about Tibet.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi anon - don't worry about saying something that isn't about Jake :D After all, on this day I encountered the Dalai Lama and not Jake. And also, it's interesting to hear what you have to say. There were protestors and supporters against the Dalai there that day and I had some interesting chats with both parties, both put their arguments across politely to passers by and to the media.

Anonymous said...

Hi,WDW, thanks for your kind word, I just can't help myself to say that,I'm a Jake fan,but I love my country! There has been too many things about Tibet, but many of them aren't true,I hope more people will learn what the truth is,people has different belief in the world,we should not bash other people's belief just because they're different from us,but it's wrong to separate a country,I say Dalai Lama.Only the slaveholder benefits from Tibet free, not the common people who live an ordinary life.If the things I post offend anyone,I aplogize.
Come back to topic, can't wait to see Jake's Prince of Persia! That could be a great movie!
